Our stall shower was missing the sliding door. The bathroom got soaked during every shower
The Empire Hotel was much, much nicer than I expected, considering that it is one of the more affordable options in Manhattan. The lobby was very stylish and featured a nice bar where people were meeting for drinks and snacks etc. The room was very small, but that is typical in big cities, and it was really nicely done, with a lovely bed, lots of towels and toiletries, etc. It felt very comfortable. The location is amazing: Lincoln Center is literally across the street, the subway is half a block away, and you can easily walk to dozens of attractions and the park. This will be my go to hotel from now on in NYC. The movies were a bit expensive to rent ($19!) but the internet was strong and cheap, so it didn't matter. I could hear the folks in the next room, but they were having an argument (whoops) and otherwise I couldn't hear anyone. NYC is noisy, so there's always going to be some noise. I really don't even consider these complaints, to be honest.
The value of the rates given the the area is great and it is centrally located in mid-town. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My room was noisy in the morning but quiet most of the other times.
The rooftop deck had great views and location was good They charge you for everything and it's super overpriced. The pool was a disappointment it's as big as a pickup truck
Proximity to Lincoln Center Dreary, small room Charge for wifi Bathroom so small that one had to close the door to reach the toilet paper and there was no surface on which to put a dopp kit
The Empire charges mini bar rates for Keurig coffee in room. The bathroom was very, very small which made it difficult to use comfortably, and we are very small people.
The room and lobby were beautifully decorated and the hotel was in a great location right in the middle of manhattan. The staff was very professional and extremely helpful. The room was agonizingly small for the amount of money we paid for it. When we checked in the lady behind the desk said she was "upgrading" us, and we barely had enough room to walk around the bed. I shudder to think of how small our room was before the "upgrade".
Room very very small for paying that price. My window view was of another building like 3 inches apart. Sink wouldn't drain, remote control wouldn't work. Otherwise, the staff was nice and the bed was comfortable.
Excellent location. Awesome rate. Was in town for a training workshop but decided to come a couple days early with my boyfriend and found a great rate for weekday in January. Close to subway. Only problem I had was that it can be quite noisy. It is located between Broadway where it crosses an avenue, so even at night there is a lot of traffic. Our room faced Lincoln Center, which seems quiet at night, but it was also the side of the hotel which has service entrances so a lot of trash trucks and deliveries coming in on that side. I'm a light sleeper anyway so I always bring earplugs and that worked perfectly.
Location Too old and the room was too small worthless
I didn't sleep well- the bed was as hard as a rock. Good location
Small rooms, great location. Good staff. Nice lobby
Great location on upper West Side; easy access to subway, Central Park. Staff is helpful, room is clean and nicely appointed.
Great location in great uws neighborhood Good value Parking No valet
localization, cleaning and confortable room and the little kitchen when I arrived I had a small problem with the book. But I think the problem is the booking.com, not the hotel. And after some trouble they solved the problem.
Good location for visiting the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Opera House. The shower doesn't have much water although water comes lot from the tap for bathtub.
location of hotel. Comfort of room. Nothing
Location was great!!! It's next to a market and a block and a half from 1,2,3 metro stop. Nicely maintained. Excellent stay!
Very friendly and helpful staff. I had a non smoking room, but I could smell cigarette smoke in the morning, presumably through the air conditioning system. Ugh! Disgusting.
Room was available for early check in. The bed and bedding were really good quality and comfortable. Fridge even had ice in the freezer. Across the street from Fairway; great for provisioning the room. There were no bedbugs!!!!! Taxes are very high in NYC hotels, so while the rate looked very attractive on Booking.com, customers should be aware that our three night stay cost over $100 more than the booking.com rate because of taxes. Was okay with us because we were happy with room, location, etc. but NYC is expensive.
Kichenette facility; cleanliness poor mattress on fold-out bed; did not fix the heating element during our stay
The price, the location Old room and furniture, old bathroom
Location and layout of the suite (separate bathroom so no one had to go through the bedroom). Lovely, responsive maid.
I was rather surprised that the price quoted did not include taxes. Coming from Europe it came as a nasty surprise at the end.
Drained very slowly
From the location to the helpful, friendly staff, I loved this hotel. It was clean, comfortable and beautiful. The on-site restaurant was very good as well. I didn't like leaving to go home!
The staff was friendly and helpful providing subway directions and breakfast suggestions. They had umbrellas available when we had rain.
The hotel was nice, but it is really the location that sells the place. Can't beat it. A block from Central Park, across from the Museum of Natural History. Bathrooms were a bit dated, and the plumbing seemed temperamental, but it was more than adequate.
Great service and close to many destinations
The location was great. Half block to Central Park, subway and bus. Bed comfy. Bathroom small but clean and plush. Restaurant had great food. Scaffolding obscures view and workers during daytime decrease privacy. Friday am, noisy road work started 4:30. No doorman to help when leaving and needing a cab. Pay for in room WiFi. Room cost increased by ~25% various taxes.
Great location, pretty, away from the hustle and bustle of Times Square/Midtown Not a business hotel. Need to pay for WIFI. No room service. No coffee machine. Only coffee available is at the breakfast room and they charge you $2.50 just to get a cup in the morning. Not the expense but the nuisance and inconvenience. No shops on site. Just vending machine. They try to pretend to be upscale here but nothing about it is upscale - from the property to amenities to service. Hugely disappointing.
The Excelsior is a classic hotel that is the absolute opposite of an impersonal chain hotel. From management to front desk to housekeeping the Excelsior staff is welcoming and extremely accommodating. We have stayed at the Excelsior several times during the prior couple of years and our rooms are consistently clean, comfortable and quiet. Rates will vary based upon the season and supply and demand factors but typically we have found the Excelsior to be the best hotel value in the upper west side. Fee for WI-fi but as a workaround we used our smartphone as a hot spot for our tablets so really no problem.
I loved the location.
I love the Excelsior, the staff, the location, the cleanliness, just so easy, so accommodating. Always the desk personnel are lovely, the last day, the 29th, the desk man was a bit condescending. I've never had that experience before, but upon asking him about leaving my bags after check-out, asking about a taxi to the airport, he almost dismissed me, as if I were an annoyance. Unfortunate, but true. The desk man when I arrived on the 2nd, was lovely, very patient, very accommodating. I've stayed here before, never had that experience, so it must've been a bad day for him.
Room was clean, and well-maintained. Looked like a relatively recent renovation (new shower, paint, etc.) Front desk staff friendly and competent. Excellent location for AMNH visit. Booked through KAYAK and a very good value. Room was quite small (though efficient) and though with double bed would not have accommodated two of us. But I was travelling alone and it was complete & a good value.
To have a refrigerator in the room and air in the bathroom
historic building nice, non-glitzy neighborhood, our room was at rear of building so it was quiet. staff was helpful & respectful. tiny room with large post in middle o the tiny bathroom. no breakfast beyond coffee in the tiny lobby no comfortable place to sit in room besides on the bed.
Comfortable bed, clean room and restroom, great value.
Location Discomfort bed and bedding, tiny bathroom, old and discolored carpet
Lot of noise from neighbour rooms. The front desk attendant who promised to provide me with a spare comforter on request never turned up.
Room was a decent size and had a private bath (be sure to check when making a reservation, as it seems not all rooms have private baths + sometimes bathrooms are quite small, and some rooms have smaller beds). The location is excellent - great neighborhood, with lots of great dining and public transportation options nearby. The staff members I spoke with were also helpful and polite. There was a window AC unit that was pretty loud and ran constantly so I ended up turning it off overnight - it got a bit warm, but thankfully it wasn't too hot outside.
Down comforter in bedroom. Very friendly staff I wish they had a coffee pot in the room.
The location I travel extensively for business and am comfortable and familiar with hotels. Park 79 was an older hotel which is fine but the room had a strong oder of urine and the bed had a plastic mattress cover like you would use on a child's bed for bed wetting which was covered with a very thin bed sheet. I was booked for 2 nights, non refundable but left after 1 night.
location construction, lack of breakfast area, size of bathroom
Near central park Did not provide drinking water during breakfast, the lobby bathroom smelled like urine. Had to get room key programmed twice. Did not get clear cable reception on tv. Wifi too slow, resorted to own cellphone data.
The location and cleanliness of the hotel was exceptional. The assigned room was very small; it was also dark, due to the low level (2nd floor) and the closeness of the adjacent building. Nevertheless, the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable.
The character The elevator and small rooms
The staff, especially Mo, were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Construction is still going on, and when done is going to be beautiful. It did not impede us in anyway. This location is fantastic for all ones NYC needs. Train close by also. Could use a bar in closet area to hang clothes. Maybe just overlooked during construction.
Location and staff were great Too busy for such a small space, no closet, breakfast was horrible.
Although the hotel was under minor construction...It was quiet. Room was all brand new and super clean. Staff was beyond nice and helpful.Location was close to all. this hotel is a 12 out of 10. not at all..I will stay there again

Hotel has been recently renovated, so the rooms and bathrooms are clean, fresh, and new. The room was a good size and the bed comfortable. Great location if you need to be on the upper west side. Very close to Central Park. Bathroom was VERY small and uncomfortable. Only one elevator for the entire hotel, so a long wait or take the stairs.

Excellent location near Central Park, close to subway stops. One of cheapest places to stay in NYC. Single room had AC, small flat screen TV, desk and chair. Free wifi that works fairly well. Can store luggage before checking and after checking out for $2 per bag. Can use Y facilities, gym, pool, etc. Communal bathroom is usually a mess. Water on floor, sinks stopped up and horrible smell. Sometimes noisy with slamming doors so bring ear plugs just in case
Sheets and a blanket was a pleasent surprise! Also cleaning every day was luxury thing. Room was warm and the hallways were in good condition. Bed was comfy too. Staff in helpful and you can enter the guesthouse anytime. The toilet at the 9th floor is hidious. There was some little bugs flying, I thought that okay whatever, but when I saw a cocroach I thought this is too much. You can use the swimming pools showers and toilets, they are renovated and in excellent condition.
The whole place in general is very safe and monitored. So the safety problem doesnt really exist there. The windows open to provide fresh air. Lots of bathrooms. Easy area to get out of and get to whereever you need to be. However, they have a curfew, a human body limit per room and will try to charge you for as much as possible during your stay. I had to rent a DOUBLE bed room because i had a friend stay over (which apparently isnt allowed). No food, only 99c soap to shower with and no ventelation in bathrooms. staff is rude at any chance they get and the other guests staying there weren't any better. They even charge you per bag if you want to leave your bags in the locker room.
Wow! to the location and gym facilities. With just a few small fixes, this could be a great (NYC inexpensive) place to stay. There was no facecloth provided There were ZERO coat hangers in the closet in my room, despite lots of space for them. One of only three showers in the only male bathroom on the 9th floor was broken (the water control handle was broken off) and could not be used. Your wifi network system blocks all access to destination port 465, ie SMTP, one of the oldest and most basic protocols on the Internet. Yes, many people get their mail through the web (http) nowadays, but many of us don't, and there's no security or other reason to block ssh, ntp, smtp, etc ports. First day, there was no shampoo nor conditioner in my room Second day: there was conditioner but no shampoo in my room. There was no water fountain / source of drinkable water on the floor (bathroom taps sprayed). On two cold days in late April, the room was too hot at night.
The location was perfect as we were across the street from Central Park, close to Lincoln Center, Columbus Square, and other great cites in the city. The staff was very friendly, and I appreciated the fact that there was a security desk in the lobby. The beds were surprisingly comfortable for being bunk beds and the room was very quiet as our window faced away from the street. The shared bathroom and showers were a bit of a challenge, but, considering the price, wasn't too bad just inconvenient.
Good value and great location. Great staff and security as well. Clean sheets and passable furniture. This is definitely an alternative to the el cheapo rooms in the East Village and felt safe at all hours. I would recommend this place again when traveling on a tight budget. The glass shower doors afford no privacy when showering. Don't know how the women's showers are configured, but for the guys, it's three next to each other across from the sinks/mirrors. I was brushing my teeth at the mirror facing the mirror and the guy behind me in the shower was, well I had to close my eyes. Also be advised that this is a really nice hostel, so expect loud kids late into the night. However, never enough to wake me up (I was there for five nights).
It's very closed to the central park. The bath shower is old and hard to be used.one of the shower's ceiling is leaking. And it's not convenience to use the hair dryer. What's more, I lost my pajamas at at the hostel. It just disappearred in my room. And the housekeeping said they may take it as the laundry. This is redicules!
Best location Bed is not comfortable
I like the comfort of just walking around the city and close to subway stations, shopping area, central park and others. Staffs are very good and accomodating except the guards coz i saw a woman with stroller and baby with bags and they dont even care to open the door. I dislike other guests who does not care about other guests esp in the middle of the night.
Pool was fun. Staff was wonderful. Room was inexpensive. Location was great. Room 905 -- private bathroom was nice for us traveling as a father and son. Very Spartan. Feels like an old apartment building or dorm room -- room floor is linoleum, tile is old, windows are old. The room felt clean, but there is grime in the corners.
Location was excellent and price was affordable. $2 to store a bag was reasonable and security staff assisted with that cheerfully. Perhaps it was an off day, but the 8th floor had a pervasive odor that was unpleasant to say the least. I also was cursed with untidy floor mates who messed up the bathroom and this wasn't cleaned during the 14 hours I was sharing it. The front desk also had an indifferent attitude while checking in - almost as if my presence was disturbing their other plans for the evening. I am pretty tolerant of shared facilities and budget properties in NY, but overall this experience managed to fall even below those standards. I enjoyed my stay at the East Side Y last year, but this stay at the West Side Y left a lot to be desired.
Noisy: banging through the night. Cleaning staff did not respect do not disturb sign on door knop
