The dining room of this charming 90 seat restaurant glows in the warm light of the Jean Perzel fixtures and antique mirrors. Been waiting for a time that I'll be in this part of the city to dine here. Well after 20 years, I'm finally here at the renowned Café Luxembourg, and the experience did not disappoint. Was able to secure a Sunday brunch time. Service was very efficient and attentive. Great menu with very unique choices. Décor is original and has become retro chic. Will prioritize coming to the Upper West Side more frequently just to dine here.

We had heard a lot about the restaurant and wanted to check it out as we live nearby. Food was disappointing. Yellow fin Tuna burger for $25 was not a piece of tuna but was just a patty with chopped tuna and stuffing items. Bun was unappetizing. \nWill not return.

Cafe Lux has been in my neighborhood for as long as I have. Many restaurants next door have come and gone, but the bustle continues at Cafe Luxembourg. The menu has something for everyone. The food isn't daring, but that's fine. Old standards remain popular and good. The country salad is still one of my favorite salads in the whole city. The French fries continue to be excellent, the Hamburger was really good before the city went on a hamburger craze, and the more formal entrees continue to be well prepared and delicious, and of course, the Hot Fudge Sunday is irresistible.\n\nAll I can say is Thank God for Cafe Luxembourg. Keep on going.

I basically really like Café Luxembourg: the food is good, the service is friendly and professional; it's a genial place. That said, the Fish and Chips that I had a night ago was really lousy--not much better than fish stix; whatever the fish was, it was completely disguised in (lukewarm) patties; as long as the dish is on the menu, the restaurant should try to make a decent version of it.

We enjoyed a pre Lincoln Center dinner here on a recent Saturday evening. The place filled up quickly. It got quite crowded and noisy with diners also lining the bar. Many would consider the vibe energetic. I ordered a ham starter, which was overly rich and flavored with lardons in a\ncream sauce. This was my own fault, as it is clearly described on the menu. But when our server learned that I did not care for it, she took it back to the kitchen, and offered any other selection on the menu. I'm afraid my alternate choice was not all that satisfying, as it was slow roasted root vegetables. These had little flavor, but main courses were an adequate , with slightly overcooked salmon, and grilled octopus, which was well prepared although fairly minimal. \nDesserts seemed limited. We will return; our gracious server made up for some of the shortcomings.

Enjoyed this spot after a matinee ballet performance at Lincoln Center. The food was tasty and not overly expensive. We enjoyed the interesting menu options and the service.

After several years, we visited Cafe Luxembourg again after finding one of their iconic three-naked-ladies-at-the-bar postcards. We were seated right away despite the restaurant seeming full. The noise level is manageable, but not exactly conducive to a quiet conversation. The cocktails and food continue to be excellent, creative and inspired flavor combinations. Desserts are special and very tasty. The wait staff are very professional, friendly and efficient. The neighborhood vibe keeps Cafe Luxembourg humble in spite of its stellar menu. Don't miss it!

Café Luxembourg is my go to restaurant, a place where I know I'll be taken care of and fed well. Usually I would give it 5 stars but this past visit only 4. When a guest asks for a bone dry martini, he means bone dry, no vermouth. It shouldn't be that difficult to convey that request to the bar tender and get the kind of drink one enjoys. Somehow that wasn't possible on this visit and that translated into only ordering one drink. Other than that the visit was perfect in every way.

If Cafe Luxembourg has been around for so long, it is for good reasons: this is a professionally-run restaurant with reliably good food, excellent service, and a lively atmosphere. For dinner the other night I had a delicious salmon crudo, with lovely shaved fennel and orange sections, followed by a nicely roasted pheasant with a perfect pan sauce and a delectable celery purée. The accompanying 'romanesco', which is halfway between cauliflower and broccoli, had a bit too much crunch, but I suspect the contrast in textures was what the chef was aiming for. A nice surprise at dessert was a quince tarte tatin with ginger ice-cream. Luxembourg has also become my go-to place for weekday breakfast meetings. It is less crowded than at other times during the day and the eggs are always cooked exactly the way you ask for them. Truly a neighborhood gem.

I've enjoyed lunch and dinner at this popular spot. Then a friend suggested meeting at 9:AM on a weekday at Café Luxembourg. I thought ' oh, dear, are we in for a Power Breakfast?'\nTo be sure, a few tables fit that description. Talking and eating in earnest, their occupants were obviously enjoying themselves while conducting business. As requested, the two of us were escorted to a quiet table where we could look on the scene. Each dish was excellent--I especially savored fresh mixed berries over organic yogurt and handmade granola--my friend also ordered grapefruit juice with a slice of lime and angostura bitters (not on the menu), and asked to split an egg and meat entrée. The server was eager to accommodate our every whim as well as to offer suggestions. Unrushed, we lingered long over cups of rich full-bodied coffee. While tempted to keep the virtues of Café Luxembourg a secret, honesty compels me to report you and your guests are going to love it!

Café Luxembourg is a treasure. I used to go all the time in the 80s and early 90s, but hadn't been in many years (I moved away from the UWS) and just visited for brunch to find it unchanged -- in all the right ways. Omelettes were very good, service was superb (even though the restaurant was packed) and the room is as perfect as it was 30 years ago -- only better with age. New York City has, surprisingly, too few restaurants of any caliber or cuisine that have been around this long and are still doing what they do so consistently and so well. Gotham, Felidia, Le Bernardin are exceptions, and there are others, to be sure, but not enough of them. Café Luxembourg belongs on that list.

We visited Cafe Luxembourg for a pre-show Saturday brunch. We were seated at our exact reservation time, in a corner table that allowed us to talk. The restaurant was a bit noisy for some of our visit, but the noise calmed down as some patrons left. It was very warm inside; a small fan was turning. A bit too hot for January.\n \nThe food was wonderful! I had a lovely croque monsieur, grilled and tasty. The herbed potatoes - akin to home fries - were excellent! Crunchy, subtly flavored, I'd return just for them.\nOne of my companions had excellent granola with yogurt, and the other enjoyed her oatmeal. This restaurant has been around for over 30 years in the same space...and no wonder it survives. they redecorate and spruce up beautifully creating a great warm ambiance, and their food is still above average. \nGreat fish & chips, lobster roll, fresh fish.\nAfter not going there for a few years, this visit made me wonder why I took so long.\nGood overall service, and a very romantic restaurant.\nAnd we could actually talk without straining our hearing.

We went to Cafe Luxembourg for brunch on New Year's Day. We were seated right by the hostess and had a friendly and professional server . I had the Ricotta Pancakes which were perfectly cooked, light crunchy outside, soft and fluffy inside (no one likes a soggy pancake) and a berry salad. My date had eggs Benedict, which was cooked properly with the poached egg on top of the smoked ham and a side of potatoes. Great brunch, great value

Last minute reservation changed without issue for a Lincoln center show. We were seated before 5 to have champagne in the sophisticated is trio setting , getting a lovely banquette for our party of 4. We love the choice of champagnes by the glass, poured generously!!! Gouge red and oysters were the perfect accompaniment. I can still tasted the mignonette which we also used for our frites. Steak frites and cassoulet were succulent anD satisfying. The little white beans in the cassoulet were perfectly tender and the duck flavor was rich. We finished with the 5 selection cheese course professionally presented by another server along with the cranberry walnut toast, quince paste and honey. Perfect end to a rich meal. Great professional service that is unobtrusive in this cozy cafe. I don't know how they did it but our water glasses were never empty. Fortunately no one was ever seated next to us so we had some elbow room too. Can't wait for our next visit.

Cafe Luxembourg has a limited, but adequate, menu, a mix of French and more Americanized options. French Onion Soup was exactly what I was hoping for -- a rich brown broth with lots of caramelized onions, and a nice covering of melted and crusty cheese. The Fish & Chips included three lightly breaded crispy and moist pieces of fish, and a bottomless cone of frites. My companion's grilled octopus appetizer was superb - tender, and with a tasty blend of Moroccan spices. Typical of NYC, tables are close together and wait staff had a difficult time getting to tables, but the noise level was low despite an active bar. Service was superb.

First, the good stuff. Service was excellent, never had to request a refill of anything, and the waiter was not intrusive into the conversation. The coffee was also very good and the price was NYC reasonable but would not have been in Alabama. Ambience was that of a French cafe and quite pleasant. I had the American breakfast (sausage potatoes, eggs, etc) and the meal was good but not remarkably so. Eggs were a bit undercooked (depending on one's taste for scrambled) although the rest of the meal was fine. I had to ask for a bread basked, and the table next to us had a basket of pastries (which I thought I was asking for) but instead got a somewhat dry wheat loaf.

The food was DELICIOUS, some of the better-prepared salmon I've ever had. The service was very good, not superb, but well well above average. The problem here (common around the city) is how tight the seating is. The party next to us got up to smoke or do whatever in the hell they did, literally 15 times, bumping into us with every move. Also, a 'loud talker' (Seinfeld) and just a lot of noise overall. Everything was great for about the first 45 minutes of the meal, but then the sound level was just deafening. I also heard lots of old men grumbling about the tight environs, so if you have a low threshold for that sort of thing, beware. Again, the food really was very very good though, so weigh the pros and cons.

Cafe Luxembourg has been one of my favorite New York restaurants for 20 years. It has always lived up to expectations with the exception of my most recent dinner. Not sure whether there was a change in the kitchen but the classic roast chicken arrived with a burned appearance and the flavor was off. Someone always orders this when I go there and it was not nearly as good as in the past. The waiter replaced the dish but it came back the same. I chose this for my Birthday dinner and never expected to be disappointed. One of the evenings specials was also peculiar. Hoping this was an anomaly.

I've always enjoyed the Cafe Luxembourg for its food and for the casual atmosphere. My most recent experience was no exception. I had the mushrooms on toast appetizer and it was exceptional. The sauted spinach side, on the other hand, was very ordinary, and there was not much of it for the $10 tab. My friend had the ramp--a well-conceived dish but perhaps a bit too heavily seasoned in an effort to disguise the bitterness of this particular green. My suggestion is that anyone ordering a bitter green knows what it's about; the chef doesn't need to make so big an effort. The onion soup was wonderfully rich. Service was very attentive and alert, without being fawning, and I like the way the staff covers for one another when necessary.

We usually love the French Fries but on Friday they were definitely undercooked and they were but smidgens of pieces of potatoes. Amazingly poor quality for a restaurant of this caliber. Three of us ordered lobster rolls which were good.

We don't mind overpaying at restaurants but not this one. It's very crowded and noisy. The menu was weird and not worth it. I had to pay an extra $8.00 on the price fix meal for a lobster roll that I didn't even like. We haved lived near the restaurant for 4 years but never went until Friday but it was my husbands birthday and he wanted to try it. Never again! the next night we went to the restaurant next door, it was pricey but well worth it and delicious.

I had the salmon and my wife had the lamb, both were delicious. We finished off with tea and coffee. nI went to CL after a concert at Lincoln Center this past Sunday. I was surprised to see how full the restaurant was at 7:30 when I arrived. I was nearly 20 minutes late, but the staff held my table, for which I was very grateful. The ambience was good. I was seated in at a small corner table but with a view to the large windows and therefore of the sidewalk traffic. The service was well-paced and very solicitous without being over-attentive. The acorn squash soup was lovely, the lamb chops done perfectly and the profiteroles for dessert were great. I struck up a conversation with a couple next to me but, even after I scootched my table closer to theirs, it was still hard to hear them. So, noise level was a bit too high. In all, a very satisfying experience, and I will definitely go again after upcoming CMS-LC concerts.

To begin: excellent host staff and server (outstanding). the food: mixed. One of us was pleased with the meal: soup du jour and tuna burger/salad; the other, the worst meal ever: French onion soup, watery and tasteless and the mixed greens, again tasteless except that a shaker of salt must have spilled into the dressing which believe it or not was also tasteless. We have never, never had bad food at Café Lux but last night really--for one of us--was dreadful. The food is good, never great, but never bad--except for the grilled octopus, really an embarrassment--and should be avoided. I have been going to this restaurant before and after performances at Lincoln Center for 30 years. The Fish and Chips on a pea puree was always delicious and a reliable favorite with out of towers. Much to my dismay they have completely changed it. What was once a generous piece of lightly fried fish on a delectable bed of war, fresh pea puree is now three small fish sticks with a ramekin of cold birdseye frozen peas in a watery mint pesto, for $24!! The service was frantic when not inattentive and the restaurant was as crowded with tables as the subway is with passengers at rsh hour. Once again, the great god mammon has diminished the quality or food, service, atmosphere and ultimately life in what was once a favorite restaurant of this New Yorker of 30+ years. A crying shame!

What a grand surprise - you had a choice of ANY appetizer & entre on the menu except for the steak & lobster which had a supplement of $10. We have been going here pre-theatre since the early 80's because it has always in good for one period when they changed chefs back then and now. Last spring we had a bad experience there with the so-called Berkshire pork chop which was half fat and now on October 8, when I had two loin lamb chops laden with sinew. The fish my wife had was served on a bed of some kind of grass. Her comment was 'Moo!' My loin chops barely had the tenderloin portion and the strip side was full of sinew. No kidding, the meat at our local ShopRite is superior to this meat. I have no idea who the supplier is, but it has to be someone who is selling cheap meat, for which Café Lux charged $32. \n\nThe first thing I noticed on the menu after being seated was that several items were not on the menu. It was very limited compared to the extensive list they had there in all out previous visits. Then my eye caught the increase in prices for everything. \n\nI can't recommend going here for a dinner unless you stick with their traditional café items. But $10 for a side of steak fries? Give me a break. It will be a long time before we return.

We were a party of 3 adults. Our regular venue for pre-theatre dining was booked, and this was a place I've been interested in for a long time. As this is a long-standing establishment with reasonable prices (for the location), I trusted I would not be disappointed. I was right.\nThe bright and bustling atmosphere and furnishings makes the place inviting.\nService was cheerfully rendered, although we had to asked for bread. It was hard catching the server's attention at times, but once you have it they really take care of you. The winelist was extensive and the servers were fairly knowledgeable.\nThe menu did not appear particularly exciting, but the quality of everything that came out of the kitchen was truly outstanding. Appetizers ordered included the grilled octopus (incredibly tender) and duck liver mousse (our guest, who loves all things liver, loved it); entrees were the Lamb Chops (medium rare), Loup de Mer, and Omlette - all beautifully executed including the trimmings. We skipped dessert but not for lack of enthusiasm. \nAs indicated in the title, this was an excellent first experience and certainly won't be the last.

That it is open for all meals makes it convenient. Most places do not open until 11:30 and then close from 3:30-5:30. I have eaten Sunday Brunch here and it was very good.

We went to Cafe Luxembourg for a pre-theater dinner. We had a terrific meal. We have a subscription to NYC Ballet and have eaten in most of the Lincoln Center area restaurants but never tried this one. It is a bit far so you have to leave at least 10 - 15 min to walk there but we'll be back. The atmosphere and menu is bistro casual but it is definitely a sophisticated restaurant. The food and service was terrific. We arrived a bit late due to traffic but still had a wonderful meal and got out on time. My husband had the fish and chips and I had the roast chicken - it sounds ordinary but they were not at all - they were delicious! It is a great value - one of the less expensive options for an excellent meal.

I have always raved about the hamburgers here. Last night, they were just OK. It seems to me that when you spend $22 on a bacon cheeseburger, it should be a really good one. It was cooked to order, but the bacon wasn't special, nor was the cheese, and the plate held the saddest looking slice of pale pink tomato I have seen -- the type you used to find in supermarket packets in the winter. . That is inexcusable. The service is attentive (almost too attentive) -- just something false rather than polished about their service. Still, everyone tries, and if you need to eat in the neighborhood, you could do a lot worse.

Last week, my husband and I met at Café Luxembourg for dinner. As usual, its continental atmosphere and relaxed surroundings welcomed us. As usual, the menu featured classics of French cuisine as well as specialties of the day. Both of us ordered grouse as our main dish, made two ways (confit and roasted.) Both of us love game, but neither of us could remember having grouse before. It was wonderful! Very dark meat, marinated to tenderness, with its sweet-sour accompaniments - the best main dish I've ever eaten in this restaurant, and the kind of meal you write home about (or just tell your friends, as I did.) Not all dishes are up to this level, and the profiteroles we had for dessert were a disappointment (the pastry too dry, almost stale), but it's a lovely old-fashioned place to eat. Reminds me of a restaurant in Paris, laid back, serious (in its food and service) and minimally intrusive.

The food was good and so was the service -- but so are a lot of other places on the UWS -- and they pack them in here. There is no room between tables and little to no room even to try to get to the ladies room or to/from the tables.\n\nThis is to benefit the restaurant, not the customers -- so why not go somewhere you're not on top of your neighbor -- and you can hear your companion?\n\nI wouldn't go back.

For those of us in NYC and not in the Hamptons on the weekend in late august, one of the joys is going to lunch at a place like cafe luxembourg, usually hyper-crowded -- and having it be quiet and only partially full of patrons. My friend and i had this experience yesterday. And as always the food was simple and delicious, the service excellent. The server said to us when we were finished -- 'please feel free to linger as long as you want.' This is an iconic restaurant and late august is a great time to experience it in a relaxing manner.

This place has been a favorite of ours since 1983. We go there two or three times a year when we got to Lincoln Center. We were there twice in Dec. of 2015. But on Jan. 30, 2016, we had the worst meal ever. It was supposed to be a Berkshire rib chop, but from the quality of the half fat, gristly piece of meat that was served, I had doubts that it came from a hog. I've had better pork from ShopRite and at a much lower cost. My wife's entree wasn't much better, grilled mackerel. The Nebbiolo glass of wine I had, tasted little better than my son's Nov. 2015 home made wine. After complaining to the manager, he gave us a free single dessert of biscotti and two decafs. It will be a long time before we return. There are other good restaurants in the Lincoln Center area.

Hadn't visited Café Lux for 10 years, in part b/c when we were last there, what once seemed a venerable institution seemed a little down on its luck. Not so this past Saturday. The menu, still emphasizing bistro staples, also included new farm-table options. The execution meanwhile seemed as good as in days of yore. The service-despite a boisterous crowd-was polished. A fun/sexy night out.

The restaurant had fine ambiance, attentive considerate service and generally good food.\nI was pleased that my server asked if anyone had food allergies, since I do have some serious ones! I am aware of that when I dine out and usually check the menu before I visit the restaurant. I must admit that I was disappointed that both the chicken and the vegetarian selections were unimaginative and inappropriate to the summer season: ( a dish of beans? a roast chicken on a July evening?). I ended up with a burger, which was well prepared but somehow more appropriate for the lunch menu.

I was surprised when my friend suggested Cafe Luxembourg, I had never been but the menu looked good and I know it is a local favorite. I don't eat meat and was happy to see a tofu dish on the menu. The ambiance is so tired, I was surprised to see how busy the restaurant was and it was filled with a predominantly female crowd. It was busy but not crazy. Waitress took forever to come over, barely cracked a smile and appeared to be pretty bored and cranky. I ordered the tofu dish which was listed as spicy and I requested it to be less so. Waitress clearly didn't want to be bothered. Dish came, tofu was ice cold as if straight from the refrigerator. I called over the waitress to ask if perhaps that is how it was to be served??? She had no idea, and the manager came over, also had no idea? Really? Once the sauce was sort of stirred, the dish was a little warmer so I didn't send it back. And then had an upset stomach that night and the next day. Nice. Frankly, I have NO idea why this place was so crowded to begin with. It's so dated looking and feeling, the menu is nothing special and the ambiance is loud and very tired looking. Totally beyond me why there were people waiting when there are so many newer, better and more friendly places. I won't be back.

Special weekend in NYC with the family and I was hoping for so much more. Folks were ordering off the menu, like raw oysters, that I would have gladly enjoyed had I known they were available. I will say the steak tartare was very good! Value? It is 'upper' Manhattan so you can expect to pay $$-$$$ for your meals. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the glass of milk my teenager ordered was only $2. That is unheard of at even the 'chain' restaurants. To the opposite end of the spectrum was a $14 Long Island Iced tea that came in a glass that was as wide as a shot glass and about as tall as 3 shot glasses. I guess the wait staff already make $15/hr min wage right? I say that as they seemed more interested in speeding your through and turning tables. That was the first time in a number of years that I tipped below 20%. What was the biggest disappointment was that there were so many good restaurants to choose from in NYC and instead this was our Saturday night dinner experience. I would liken this place to a pro sports reference. Football player has a banner year, hits the free market, gets paid big bucks, but only performs at a mediocre level once on board...'overhyped' and you paid $$$ to find this out.

Our family dined here prior to attending a performance at the Met. We thoroughly enjoyed this classic bistro with attentive, but not intrusive staff. Food was well seasoned and freshly prepared. My favorite dish, both in terms of presentation and taste, was the Country Salad - a must-get! When one of our steaks came well over done, the staff could not have been more helpful. While it would be better to not have a problem, it is comforting to know the restaurant takes good care of their patrons should something come up. We would not hesitate to return to Cafe Luxembourg, and if you are looking for good bistro food with flair that does not break the bank, please go here and order the Prix Fix!

I used to go here a lot. Went once 2 years ago and had a less than OK experience and took years off. A friend wanted to try this past week and so I agreed. Was looking forward to a nice lunch.\n\nThere are lots of amazing places to eat in NYC and Cafe Lux now disappoints. The service at the host stand was rude and rushed. We were craving for some French food and we booked two French restaurants in a row after arrived in NY. Cafe Luxembourg was for the second night and I chose the place because of good reviews and close proximity of Metropolitan Opera.\n\nAs we had tickets that night for a performance that will start at 8 PM we arrived for an early dinner, 6 PM. The restaurant became packed around 7 and we started with an Old Fashioned, so so, a good glass of white to go with Goose Liver Mousse (Not Pate) YummY!\n\nThen a good Cote Du Rhone and Steak Tartare, usually I add worcestershire and tabasco to all the tartares but this one's was perfect. Did not need to add any.\n\nWe had a wonderful night, a very knowledgeable waitress.\n\nBest!

This cafe is so 'french'! There were 7 of us and the manager was the most accommodating, wonderful person with a great personality and she was very helpful in making more room for us and making our experience perfect. I wish I knew her name. The waitress was wonderful, very attentive but left us to talk and it was just right. And then the food! The lemon ricotta pancakes were loved and we were told they were the best ever had, the french toast was thick and delicious, the omelet was perfection, the eggs benedict adored and do not leave here without have their home fries. There are none better in the universe!! Crispy, crunchy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. I don't know how they do it, but thankfully, they do! Do not miss a meal here.

Given that the noise was tolerable, the food and service was fine, I would bring a date or friends here in the future.\n\nThe negative is the price. A bit more than what I was expecting. Appetizers and entrees were fine - nothing to write home about but generally tasty. The. Came dessert: the worst profiteroles ever. The dough had a consistency more in common with a jelly donut. Rather than sitting in a pool of chocolate, the chocolate was drizzled over the concoctin and barely covered it. When we complained about the dessert to the waiter, he agreed it didn't look anything like profiteroles. Had no trouble charging us the $12 for the uneaten mess. Hence the service score above.

We have been dining at Café Luxembourg for many years now. It is the perfect restaurant for dinner before an opera or concert. The service is impeccable; the food is very good (and the menu changes every once in a while so you never get tired of it); the wine list is quite nice; and the price is not excessive -- in one word, it is close to perfect.

I was expecting much more from this well known place. Both of our meals were below satisfactory. My salmon was hot and well cooked but served with a cold tasteless vegetable lentil side. My sisters mackerel was undercooked and slimy . Barely edible. We will not be back.

I ' m from Mtl. I go to NY twice a year and I like to go for lunh or supper at Luxembourg for the french ambiance of Bistro. I love that small resto for the good food, the wine in a great décor .\nWe always receive a very very good service. I always appreciate that we can take our time enjoying our meal. \nThis year , I noticed no more french songs for ambiance.\n\nI always bring a new friend with me. \n\nBe there again in September.

This is not the place for a romantic dinner early in the evening, but it's great pre-performance at Lincoln Center. It feels a bit European, full of good feeling, good wine, and hearty food. On one side of us was a mature couple who said they lived outside Amsterdam; on the other, a woman and her probable granddaughter of about 10, who was over-the-moon about the chocolate sauce on her dessert. The latter were replaced by two women who ordered whisky right away. The service is a step above lots of restaurants in this price range—courteous, prompt and not at all pushy.

I returned to Cafe Luxembourg years after having left NYC and the food was just as good as I remember. I ate every drop of the mussels in fennel broth and the chocolate mousse cake was amazing. This place has been around for 80 years and it's easy to see why. The decor is classy French style. Service was good although we were seated right next to the service station so we could hear all the waiters gossiping all night. Food was excellent. The bill was a bit steep but that's a function of the pricey neighborhood and a moderate drinking problem.

The only reason I gave three stars for ambiance is that I prefer a very quiet restaurant. This restaurant bistro with healthy accents like sautéed spinach and frisee' and endive salad is close to Lincoln Center and the movie theaters on the West Side of Manhattan. The staff will ask if you are going to theater and get you out in time. I like the restaurant because of the sophisticated wait-staff that understands that you can order an appetizer portion of steak tartar and a bowl of sautéed spinach and be happy with your choices. One member of our group had onion soup (made in a traditional crock with gruyere cheese) and the salmon special while another diner had the fish and chips. We all shared the excellent french fries and had assorted biscotti for dessert.

The review title sounds more quaint than it should. But a 'dinner out' is an experience that is pleasant and a bit special. That's the vibe that the café imbues. It is classic without pretense -- distinctive without a gimmick. We always find the menu interesting and the food delicious with service that is attentive and cordial. The bar has a well-worn feel that signals happy times have been enjoyed there by many. Treat yourself to dinner out as it should be in New York.

FIrst time at this restaurant. Had a open table reservation for 12:15 this past Saturday. We were advised when we arrived that the party at our table was paying their check and the wait shouldn't be long. Which was fine. We stood and waited by the bar as a number of other patrons arrived, almost all who also had reservations. The hostess touched base with us again to let us know it shouldn't be long, which was nice. Then after about ten minutes the manager apologized for the wait and told us that our first drink would be on them and that she was going to try to encourage the guests at our table to leave. We got seated right at 12:30, and after we ordered we saw her let our server know about the drinks, which were in fact taken off the check. A really nice gesture that we appreciated. More than anything we appreciated the fact that they kept us updated and were trying to seat us. This is not a large place and it was full. I can't imagine coming there without a reservation, unless you want to sit at the bar (which was also pretty full). The food was very good as was the service. We thoroughly enjoyed our brunch there and next time we are in NYC will plan to return. Made a great first impression!

Last Saturday morning, our group of 4 friends (of a certain age) arrived on a bus from Washington, DC, and we were famished. Dropped our luggage at the hotel and came directly to the Café. Wait staff were wonderful, bringing us much needed coffee and water immediately and refilling often. My friends ordered eggs, and they reported that the eggs were good. I ordered ricotta pancakes and...OH MY. They were the best pancakes I have ever had. I will dream about those pancakes. (And I am not one who thinks much about food.) Cafe Luxembourg is our 'go to' as it never disappoints. We live in Boston, but routinely stay at 66th & Broadway. Our server, Alexis, could not have been more warm, and interesting to talk to....that made our morning. Worth a visit if in the area or looking for a mid range, good value for money restaurant which you must book in advance for.\nFelt slightly rushed during our stay as they could fill the tables several times each night but Apart from that, a worthwhile place to dine.

Although a bit more crowed and noisy than my favorite Parisian cafe, the menu is comfortingly familiar and it's the closest we come in Manhattan. It's my favorite to invite a friend for lunch.

This is our second time in a month. It is the perfect place before a Lincoln Center event. For the prix fixe I had the mushrooms on toast, which is outstanding, the salmon and the ice cream sundae which fed the four of us. Really pretty place with excellent service and food.

I hadn't eaten in Cafe Luxembourg for several years, but the meal did not disappoint. The salmon was fresh and perfectly cooked paired with a delicious curried potato-lentil salad and snap peas. Parisian standards like crème brûlée and frites were memorable. Although we didn't take advantage of it, the prix fixe was a very good deal and a great idea pre-theater. But this grande dame could use a a little facelift and, given the superb quality of the meal, probably deserves one so it can look as good as it tastes. We'll go back for sure.

Whatever time of day, Cafe Luxembourg is the perfect choice. Over the years I find that I prefer to sit at the bar (which probably started when I arrived without a reservation and wanted to avoid a long wait). The menu, although filled with classic bistro favorites, has continued to evolve over the years to include seasonal ingredients and stay current. The service at the bar is attentive but not intrusive and the conversation is always lively. Of course, Cafe Luxembourg is a wonderful choice if pre or post theatre because of its proximity to Lincoln Center. The restaurant itself lends itself to a large party or an intimate dinner. The servers are knowledgable and clearly well-trained. Someone is paying attention to the details.

Four of us visited for a dinner to honor the visit of an out of town ( former NYC resident) guest and long time fan of the Cafe.\nWe were seated promptly and our server (Alana) was particularly gracious and helpful. Our wine was chilled, apps and entrees offered in a timely but unhurried manner. The atmosphere, while noisy, was not distracting from our delicious meal and conversations. We enjoyed oysters, burrata, tuna burgers and steak tartare. Our desserts (a fig pudding and chocolate creation) were also wonderful. \nOne of our guests, a first timer, indicated that she would be a repeat diner. \nOur thanks to the Cafe and to Alana (apologies if misspelled) for a great experience.

Cafe Luxembourg never disappoints. We made Saturday night reservations for a Sunday brunch, ordered omelets and wolfed them down. Eggs were delciious and potatoes were superb. They might have offered a bread basket, but I didn't complain because of the carbs and those spuds. \n\nThis isn't cutting edge, but it's a comfortable spot, great for locals, Lincoln Center, and it's right near the 72d Street 1-2-3 subway stop, so if you're anywhere on the West Side and are hungry, consider this a go-to choice.

Lively atmosphere, friendly staff, and great avocado toast. We really enjoyed our brunch/lunch here. So it should say something that my big take-away is that iced tea, served in smallish, narrow glasses, is not refilled free - particularly given the price of the entrees. Too bad that for the miniscule cost of an iced-tea refill, management tarnished my view of this otherwise very good restaurant.

Cafe Luxembourg has long been a neighborhood favorite and we have always enjoyed our service there. Sadly, they missed the mark on Mother's Day. We were seated next to a large party, and due to the cramped space, our server spent much of her time with her right hip (I'm being polite here) brushing against me in order to serve them, which made me constantly have to lean to my right to avoid getting my face hit. I do understand space issues, but there was no sensitivity on her part towards how it was affecting us. When she gave us her attention, she seemed frazzled and didn't properly greet us. She did not smile nor make eye contact; not even a hello. 'Can I start you with something to drink?' As we were not comfortable, and she was so busy, we thought we would quickly order our meal. She said, 'I'm going to need a minute for that.' She took our coffee order, and we did not see her again until the end of our meal. The server who brought our drinks out forgot my mother's coffee ( I let him know, his response, 'oh she ordered a coffee?' was not helpful. ) \nA third person took our food order. No one checked on us during our meal; we had to flag a back waiter down for more coffee for my mother. I never saw a floor manager on the floor; although the host stand was manned by two people even when the door was quiet. The food was only adequate, and our request that the French toast berries come on the side was ignored. After our plates were cleared, our 'server' miraculously reappeared. While crumbing our table, she mumbled 'Can I get you anything else?' ( actually, she asked the tablecloth.) I felt terrible that my mother's special day was beginning in this way. We are not overly demanding diners; we understand how difficult a server's job can be, especially on busy holidays, but I expect much better from Cafe Luxembourg. The glitches in service, which happen everywhere, would have been less jarring if there had been a modicum of true hospitality.

While my companion enjoyed the asparagus salad and pork chop, I felt the salad we a bit meager, and the breast of veal unsatisfactory. There is little meat on it, which I knew, but the portion was small, with not much to enjoy. More to the point, it came with a parsnip puree, which gave a sweetness to the dish which, to these taste buds, did not go well with the veal. The roasted scallions were stringy and almost impossible to cut, so that one had to twirl them around the fork like pasta, and chew for longer than it was worth. Next time, I'll return to the pork chop, which I've had in the past and has always been delicious.

Love the vibrant, noisy (but not loud) atmosphere of Cafe Luxembourg. The restaurant feels sophisticated, yet cozy; not much space between tables, but it works. I love the white table settings and the friendly, professional service. The cauliflower bisque was wonderful and the veal breast something-or-other that was one of the specials of the day was a 10. There's a good reason why this restaurant has been around for so long consistently good without the air of superiority. After many years we decided to revisit this restaurant, the matinee show ended earlier than anticipated and we were way too early for our reservation but they accommodated us without a fuss. The restaurant was packed but the hostess was so gracious and apologetic for keeping us waiting for 5 minutes while our table is getting set up. Just that subtle gesture of courtesy gives you a warm welcoming feeling. From beginning to end our evening could not have been more perfect. We, together with our guests loved everything, food, service and ambience. Need I say more?

Cafe Lux remains a great neighborhood restaurant, with a menu that evolves periodically to reflect the season without being fussy about it. Just the right number of entrees -- fish, chicken, pork chop, steak frites, cassoulet ! -- appetizers, and sides to choose from, with appealing specials and a good prix-fixe program for pre-theater and late night. Great bread, too. I wish we had saved room for dessert! Service-wise, it's a well-oiled machine: attentive when you need them but not oversolicitous. My only complaint is that it's a tight squeeze everywhere, in that NYC way... it can be tough to get to your seat, and (at times) challenging for servers to deliver dishes gracefully. That said, it's entirely comfortable once you sit down, and overall, a model for restaurateurs to aspire to.
