We love Marea. This time, when I realized the theater we were going to was only a few blocks away, I was thrilled they had an opening. Upon arrival they asked if we had a time frame. Although we had plenty of time with a 5:45 seating to make an 8:00 show they knew this. They did not rush us to order and we were not begging for the check before the time we had to leave. As for the rest of it ....it comes in the details...the food it some of the best, the service is top notch, and basically you can't go wrong. Although we did not do it this time, we love eating at the bar too. The tasting menu is excellent and you won't leave stuffed, but very satisfied. Its a treat to go for any reason!!!!

I took my wife to Marea for our wedding anniversary. We both decided to have the 4 course $105 Prix Fixe.\n\nThe service is superb! And the octopus appetizer was really good. And so was the Octopus pasta dish. (We both love octopus :)\n\nBut then came the Halibut. The fish itself was nicely cooked. But it was served on top of a bed of bitter greens and some funky tasting muscles in a bland sauce. (it also came with extra bland sauce on the side.) Neither of us enjoyed this!\n\nBut the biggest let down of the evening were the deserts. (And on other occasions when we've eaten here) I swear the main ingredient in mine was miracle whip. \n\nIF we ever decide to return to Marea, I doubt we'll do the 4 course again. We'll just stick with the 2 Octopus dishes :)

Order the Astice and Gnocchetti, both incredibly delicious. Great value on the lunch menu, only $52 for a starter and entree, and you can order one of the pastas as a starter! Also an $80 tasting menu option which sounds like a great deal, you just lose the option of choosing exactly which dishes you want. Great service, fun experience to be surrounded by the power lunch folk.

We went to Marea after a recommendation from a friend. It was nice to be able to get late reservations. Ours was at 11:00pm since we saw a Broadway show earlier in the evening. We opted for the prix-fixed menu so that we could have a taste of the entire menu. The food was exceptional, and the service was very attentive. It was a very enjoyable experience. I would recommend to others.

My family selected Marea to celebrate my younger brother's medical school graduation this past Sunday. My family flew in from California for the occasion. While the staff was attentive, the quality of food was far below my expectations for Marea. My Mom is a vegetarian and ordered the gem salad to start and the fungi risotto as her main. Her salad had actual dirt in it. I'm a huge fan of farm to table dining and fresh produce but dirt in a simple gem salad at Marea is unacceptable. When we informed the waiter, he simply offered to bring her another salad. My Mom's risotto was overly salted, and the rice was beyond al dente. She said it's the worst meal she's had in her life in NYC.\n\nMy pulpo appetizer was okay. My halibut main dish was no where near as fresh as the halibut I enjoyed as my 3rd dish at Daniel a week prior. We selected Marea to celebrate a life milestone and major accomplishment for my brother (who has dined at Marea before and was equally underwhelmed). Other than the ambiance and location, I have nothing positive to say about Marea and will not be returning.

Food is ok, not spectacular, service is good, although a bit slow. Menu is very limited, no vegetarian options. Asked for caprese salad, which is supposed to be made with fresh mozzarella. Our dinner here exceed my expectations by far. The food, service, everything was incredible. Our wine and water glasses were never empty for more than two minutes, and they regularly make rounds with multiple options of delicious fresh baked bread. We had help with choosing wine, and though we did the 4 course, the portions were large and I was full before dessert. Upon finding out it was my girlfriend's birthday, when her dessert came out, it had a chocolate medallion in it with 'Happy Birthday' beautifully inscribed in it. A huge thank you to everyone at Marea for a wonderful experience, especially our server Matthew. When I return to NYC in the future, I'll be sure to come back!

This was an occasion celebrating two milestone birthdays, what a huge disappointment. I do not understand how this place gets such high marks. Some of the food was very good, such as the octopus app, and some was a joke, such as the $35 pasta with lump crabment. You needed a magnifying glass to see the crab and it was literally 6 bites - what any other restaurant would serve as an appetizer. Poor communication from the waiter - he was told that there was a lobster allergy. Instead of informing me that the dish was made with lobster, they left off the sauce and it was literally an unseasoned piece of raw fish. Got sent back. The scallops are only cooked on one side, which when I asked why - was told they serve them almost raw. Very odd and should have been told when ordering. Was thankful someone at the table would eat it, as it was also very oversalted, and I got the halibut which was very good.

When you are looking for high class seafood experience, this is the place.\nLangustine was top, sea urchin was wow. The service always good: professional but not boring, friendly. You may skip the pasta - if you are carb control. But never skip the langustine and sea urchin if they have them.\nWe were suprised that they did very good in foie gras also (not seafood). Even the free olive oil for the bread - I almost drink it!\n\nNo reason that it is one of our favorite restaurant. Marea was recommended by a very trusted friend. We were celebrating my wife's birthday...and once the waiter found that out...he made her feel very special. The wine list is extensive! We normally overeat at Italian restaurants...due to the fact that we don't always know the food we order. Our server, Daniel, was excellent and offered 1/2 portions where it was appropriate. Have them explain the menu...they are very willing to do that...and will guide you in your favorite direction. The dessert for my wife...complete with a candle...was a very great touch. We'll be back the next time in NYC!!

I made a reservation for my husband's birthday and we were super excited to celebrate at such a special restaurant. Unfortunately the staff mostly in part our waiter ruined our whole evening. He barely asked us what we wanted to order whether we wanted something to drink and once we ordered a bottle of wine the sommelier went over the menu with us since the waiter would not. About 15 minutes later The waiter came back to finally ask us what we like to order. After we completed our meal we ordered some dessert and they brought out a little special birthday Panna cotta for us. Upon finishing dessert we waited another 15 to 20 minutes to finally get the attention of the server to ask for our check once I put the credit card in the in the envelope it took him another 10 minutes to realize that he needed to charge our card so in total we probably wait another 20+ to 30 minutes for us to actually leave the restaurant. It seemed to us that he didn't want to be there and that he really rather not be a waiter because he was miserable and what he's doing I hope that no other couples have to go through on such a special night for my husband. This experience truly left a very bad taste in our mouths and I can say that I will never be back nor will I ever recommend this restaurant.

Marea was fair but not exceptional. I was not as impressed as I originally imagined I would be. We chose the tasting menu which was a four course menu. The portions were too large and some of the temperatures were off (pasta near the center too hot, around the sides of the dish too cold) and the halibut was slightly overcooked. The spacing between dishes was sporadic and not managed well. The explanations of dishes were lacking considering the Michelin two star rating. I think our restaurant experience would have been better if we had just ordered oysters and drinks (which were actually fairly good). I would recommend Daniel or Blue Hill over Marea for a well priced tasting menu. Maybe it was just an off night, but considering the amount and frequency of mistakes I cant imagine that this was a one time issue.

We were going to the opera at Lincoln Center. As were dressed up for the opera we were looking for an excellent dining option, within close walking distance to Lincoln Center that would provide an exceptional dinning experience and one where we would not feel out of place being dressed formally. Marea fulfilled all of our expectations and beyond. These days, the dining experience in many fine restaurants has become very casual with regard to attire. Finding a place where you can feel comfortable when formally dressed up is less common. The staff at Marea was exceptionally organized and customer focused. From the moment we walked in, the maître d’ inquired about our preferences and asked about our “show schedule” and need to be out in a timely fashion. The entire experience was extremely well choreographed, with excellent customer service without the feeling in the least that we were being rushed through. The food was exquisite. I found the 4-course fixed price menu for the $104 to be a reasonably price for the high quality of food and given the overall experience. Among all of the food options which I tried, the octopus appetizer (antipasti) was the best octopus that I have ever had in my life…perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. Even though this is a very fine restaurant, the staff was very friendly and not “stiff and starched” in their approach.

One of the best restaurants in NYC. Elegant without being stuffy, and the noise level is low enough to enjoy conversation. Food and service are outstanding, and Francesco is one of the top sommeliers in NYC; will find a great bottle of wine at most price points. Every dish is outstanding, and quality is consistent. Expensive but worth it.

My husband and I have been to Marea before and loved it, always ordering the 4-course tasting menu. We share every dish, so we each taste 2 appetizers, 2 pastas and 2 seafood dishes followed by desserts. I don't ever recall this being the case before, but this time, every dish was swimming in butter. Although other ingredients, especially fish and pasta, were cooked to perfection, the fact that they were all so buttery/oily as well as over-salted made 6 dishes taste remarkably similar. Very disappointing.

From the moment you arrive at Marea, you are whisked to your table and the on point service begins. Prompt attention to every detail. Had the halibut and truffle pasta which were spectacular. 1/2 bottle of chianti hit the spot.

Very unspectacularly conceived dishes, with reasonable ingredients – but not exceptional. Creativity almost completely absent, with very simple combinations of very basic flavours. Casual environment with attentive and pleasant, but very informal, service. A remarkable absence of real sophistication for a two-star establishment; unlikely to be awarded more than a mention in one of the European Michelin Guides – and certainly not a star.

began with 2 glasses franciacorte rose champagne, prix fixe menu began with ricci, fresh and sensuous, a lobster salad w burrata, main course was branzino, succulent as usual. all complimented with a substantial but quite reasonably priced bottle of obscure red (varietal pronounced like synchilla) a beautifully balanced wine with a great nose and a wonderful finish. Dessert was a chocolate creation which we devoured. \nDuring our meal we discovered we were seated next to two very very well known musical celebrities not unusual here. \nif you eat here frequently you must try the fusilli w bone marrow and braised octopus: a unique and signature dish.\nwe try to eat at Marea about every three weeks or so we have yet to find a more wonderful Italian dining experience

If an overabundance of service people - that walk around without purpose - is a sign of good service then Marea has excellent service. But I think they could dismiss 30% of the staff across the board and lower the prices OR eliminate the Tip and probably make more money.\n\nThe restaurant really feels crowded and although everything is elegant you cannot avoid feeling you are eating at the market place with people running around all over the place.\n\nIF you hire efficient service people you will benefit tremendously.

Birthday celebration for my daughter. Had high expectations. Had not been in this space since it was occupied by San Domenico. I think the footprint has gotten larger, but the space is very attractive with good spacing between tables. Service was attentive, although not quite to the level of professionalism that one would expect at this level.\n\nFood was a little disappointing. They feature a raw fish appetizer selection. I picked the tuna which was 4 small pieces and dry and not very flavorful. The entrees for our group ranged from quite tasty (a pasta dish with some lobster) to so so (one of the fish entrees). I had a seafood stew which had an upcharge and was pretty good, but nothing to write home about.\n\nPrices are high for what you get in terms of food. The wine list is also overpriced. Had a bottle of Barolo that was on the list for $180, which retails at about $45. We did get a corked bottle and the wine steward was gracious about removing the bottle from both the table and the tab.\n\nIt was a fun evening, but I left with a small sense of disappointment versus expectations.

I live part of the time in France and know what fresh oursin tastes like. Additionally, the pasta was overcooked. \n\nThe scallop dish was the worst. The scallops themselves were fine, dull, but fine. However the surrounding vegetables looked like tiny pieces of turd. A $26 glass of wine and the waiter barely poured us 5 ozs!!! He brought the wrong wine for my husband and when he corrected it he served him a COLD glass of Pinot Noir. Outrageous at those prices. Really?\n\nOur appetizer was very good. Two TINY slivers of toast with a tasty sea urchin(?) topping.\nWhy so stingy at such high prices?\n\nMy pasta was ok, nothing mouth watering. I have been to Marea many times over the years and the service and food have always been faultless. I went yesterday with with my mom and sister and had a horrible experience. My food was good but my sister's was not, so I guess inconsistent is how I'd describe the food. The service was horrible. My sister sent her entree back because it was overcooked and the waiter then took 25 minutes to show up with her substitute dish. At that point, my sister had already eaten half of my mom's entree because she was hungry and tired of waiting. When my sister said she didn't want her entree the waiter gave her a major attitude. He then basically disappeared. We had to flag down multiple bus boys in order to get dessert and our check. After we paid, including a 15% tip (we didn't feel right leaving nothing), my sister complained to the manager, who was rude and said 'well, that's what happens when you send a dish back.' Incredible! Then, my mom and I realized today that we had fraudulently been charged by Marea to the tune of more than $100 each. So, now, we are stuck disputing bills with our respective credit card companies. With so many delicious restaurants in NYC, we will not return to Marea.

We have been to Marea many times but this was by far the worst experience. When waiting for our table, we went to the bar and asked for a wine we had last time we were at the restaurant. The male bartender adamantly denied that that type of wine was ever served at the restaurant and that we must have been mistaken or confused. Until we showed him a picture we had taken of the bottle on the bar because we had liked it so much that he then tried to play it off as if he wasn't wrong. Since when is it appropriate to shutdown a client and suggest that they are lying? The restaurant is no longer what it used to be in terms of service. At least the food was still good.

It was good but for two 'mistakes.' I don't know why hosts think that two men can be seated anywhere in a restaurant and not care. I made a reservation at marea weeks in advance. I'm a VIP open tabler. We were dressed up. Time comes to be seated and the host heads to the most informal area in the place. I said no, I'd like to sit in the main dining room. Minutes pass. The host comes over to me and tries to convince me that it's an excellent table in Siberia! I looked at him like who are you kidding. I wanted to say, oh yea then give it to that couple in the main dining room and give us their seats. Needless to say they put themselves out and found a table. Horrific. Then, at the end after specifically telling them to put two different entrees in two different containers, they put them together. It's a nice place but I won't be going back.

Awesome Fresh Home Made Pasta and Dover Sole With Fine Chablis So Nice....my daughters ordered a half plate(appetizer portion) of their famous home made pasta dishes, and me the Risotto Funghi, and it was awesome....\nThe Dover Sole was as good as I have had anywhere, anytime. My daughters had the delightful halibut entree.... leaving room for a rich chocolate dessert while I sipped liquid pleasure in the form of a late harvest dessert wine.\nService was extraordinary and people all smiling and helpful.\nAmazing wine list, especially the Italian and French names... one French bottle listed for only $24,500.00! Really? Would love to watch that pour....

Amazing restaurant. The entire experience was great from the moment we walked in the door. We did the 4 course prix fixe menu and dinner lasted about 2 hours. They do ask if you have theatre reservations and can move the dinner along quicker if you like. Service was on point, wine list was amazing and the food was perfect. The setting was private enough for a date night but there was several large parties dining as well. We had been walking around the city in the cold and snow all day so we arrived at dinner fairly underdressed; I still felt completely comfortable and the hostess kindly checked all of our bags with our coats. The gnocchetti was my favorite part of the meal.

Marea, if you can secure a reservation, is a must do. When in NYC, I always try to secure seating, the food is excellent, but this time the service was inconsistent. Waiter apologized twice for oyster appetizers being slow, finally said they were complimentary. I like the fact Marea management knew this wasn't their standard service and took the initiative to recognize it. Still my first choice in NYC. The grilled octopus is excellent as well as the Dover sole.

We ordered Brandzino for 2, seared sea scallops and mixed seafood soup for entrees and he meals were all cooked to perfection. One of the sides was the mushroom and I have never had mushroom like that before. It had a crunch to it but oh so delish. Wow! What an amazing place! I am new to the fine dining scene and since I live near the area I would try my hand in some of the Michelin Star Restaurants. After checking the various menu's of all the 1 to 3 star restaurants, my girlfriend and I decided on this place. The moment you step in the customer service is outstanding, the host and hostess were both attentive, we were seated immediately in the corner section of the restaurant which was very nice and intimate. The entire staff showed a great deal of professionalism. The waiter was very knowledgeable of the menu and answered any questions we had about the certain dishes. \n\nThe food: the main reason for coming here. We decided to have the four course prix fixe menu. From the appetizers, anti pasta, pasta, entre, and dessert, every dish came out perfectly cooked and excellent. Each dish offered different textures and flavor's and they were all a joy to eat and indulge. Their signature dish Fusilli was exquisite. The entire dish was cooked perfectly, and served at the right temperature. The combination of the bone marrow, octopus and the in house made pasta makes for a dish you will not be able to find anywhere. The meal ended with some sweets and the Panna Cotta was a fitting end to the meal. The different textures, and levels of sweetness really makes this dish an excellent way to end the wonderful experience of dining here. \n\nI can not recommend this place enough, and I will not hesitate to come to Marea when I am looking for a wonderful dining experience.

Been to Marea many times - at least every time in am in NY with clients, which is at least 6 times a year. I loved this restaurant. This time I was given a very disappointing table with no atmosphere by the bar - a shame as this is the first time I have taken my wife. I asked to be moved as very noisy with baby crying next to us - I have children so understand but this was supposed to be a night off from children for my wife and I so not ideal. I also booked 4 weeks ago so unsure why given such a bad table. Very rushed service with petite fours thrown on table whilst we were still on dessert..... Many times I had to proactively seek service and staff looked very disinterested. \n\nVery disappointing for a restaurant I had rated so highly.\nSadly I won't be coming again either with clients or for pleasure.

The anti-pasta and pasta dishes were excellent. But they served a duck that should never have been served. I knew something was wrong immediately when it dulled my knife. I'm serious. This was the worst duck I ever had- it was shoe leather quality in texture and taste. They then brought me the NY Sirloin as a substitute. I never met a NY Sirloin that couldn't be cooked in 4 min on one side and 3 on the other. The Sirloin came 20 minutes later, long after the rest of my party finished their main courses. I tasted it and decided to take it home rather than slow everyone down. The worst part is that it was also one of the worst NY Sirloins I ever had- basically tasteless. I guess I just didn't have any luck at this place but the fault may be partly mine as nobody should go there for anything other than pasta and seafood \n\nBottom line, its a very expensive seafood pasta place, nothing more, with spotty service to boot. I will not return anytime soon.

The food, service and decor are perfect. Always special here. This is indeed a special place and we come here on our birthdays. So why the long face you ask. Well at the table next to us were four, shall we call them Boce Raton megaphones. Loud, crass and certifiably sexist, even the wives. Special. All hard of hearing, all very loud. Do I really care about the size of the Tarpon he bagged. They were there when we arrived and were there when we left. They did make frequent bathroom trips so there was occasional peace and quiet. Not Marea's fault. It is a public place. \nBehind us however were a tidy, well coiffed, very skinny group of four old anti Semites. We looked, we turned, we cleared our throats and them finally told them to cut the crap. They were annoyed, but not nearly as annoyed as we were. \n\nSo how good was Marea? Good enough that we still somehow managed to enjoy the evening. Oh, and they were not Euro trash. They were all red blooded Americans.

As foodies, we enjoy eating in places that serve interesting, imaginative, high quality, and sumptuous food. We had lunch at Marea to celebrate a birthday. We both had the 5 course tasting menu, one with wine pairings. We found the food to be tasty and creative. The serving sizes were adequate, big enough to be full by the end of the meal but not too big as to be overwhelming. The wines were excellent. They were interesting and well chosen for each course. The pourings were substantial and perfect for two people to share for lunch. The only objection about the food was that the pasta dish was too salty for our taste. The service was also excellent. We noticed that there were many people in the restaurant having business lunches. We felt we had service equal to the attention the 'regulars' received. It was great entertainment and we plan to take a friend, who is also a foodie, to Marea to celebrate his birthday.

I took my mother to marea as an early birthday gift and was disappointed at the service and general treatment I received while dinning there. I felt as though the waiters weren't interested in having us there, when I asked a menu question or said thank you the waiter didn't even make eye contact and I could feel them rushing to close (cleaning around us, sending different waiters throughout the evening , people forgetting to ask us how our meal or experience was, rushing us through the menu options ), even when checking in for our reservation the hostess took the coats of the couple next to us and didn't bother to ask us for ours. They also offered the guests next to us a drink for the wait , yet didn't do that for us even though we had been waiting a long time. The general experience was disappointing, I would much rather go to Le Bernardin. I've already told my colleagues and friends how lack lustre my experience was. The food was good , but the lack of service and attention makes marea not worth it.

I am a foodie and love trying new restaurants. I go out t dinner every 2 days and tried zagat's top 20 restaurants in NYC. This restaurant is a very well known one and I work a few blocks up on UWS so it is very convenient to get to in 5 minutes. The food was amazing and the place is very pretty. My friend and I were celebrating an occasion and from the moment we set down our waitress was (too good to assist us). I had asked a recommendation about wines and she suggested 1 kind (with an attitude). We watched her communicate with the table next to us when everything was explained and suggested. She only asked us one about about food when the first course arrived before we even tasted. After both of us were done with our 4-course tasting menu we had a lot of food left and we asked to wrap it up and we never received it before we left. People like that should not be working in high end restaurants like that. We were both disappointed and will not be coming back even though the food was amazing.

Perfect for dinner after a Lincoln center show. Beautiful place. Extremely welcoming staff. We decided to stay and dine at the beautiful bar with an extremely knowledgeable, professional, friendly bartender. Everything we ate was wonderful. Shrimp gnochetti, striped bass and halibut were all perfect. They were willing to do anything we asked- splitting appetizers.. Making a salad when none on the menu.. Highly recommend this place. Wish I lived in the city!

I've had the pleasure of eating at many of Michael White's restaurants over a period of many years, and have enjoyed a number of lunches at Marea, so I was disappointed at the lack of elegance and ambiance at our dinner. The place was overflowing with a combination of appropriately dressed customers and some who looked like they had just walked in after a day of sightseeing - fanny packs, water bottles and all. I guess that is why they have a separate room behind the bar, as they seemed to put most of the people who were not appropriately dressed back there. However, I was not amused when they attempted to put us back there despite the fact that we were dressed appropriately for the main room. When we protested, they did accommodate our request for a table in the main room, which was much appreciated, but the whole experience, apart from the food, was a little off. The food was, as always, fantastic, the service was efficient, but we found the Sommelier's attitude to be somewhat off-putting, and the room just did not have the quiet elegance that I have experienced at lunch.

I have been going to too many NY restaurants where the food seems like a science project that didn't work, or someone tried to combine the weirdest ingredients they could think of in hopes that it would somehow taste good. So my daughter who works at Tasting Table suggested Marea. What a fantastic lunch I had there this past week. Grilled octopus that was the best I have ever had anywhere. also delicious halibut encrusted in porcini mushrooms, a delightful semifreddo for dessert, pork ravioli unlike any ravioli I have ever had, and my wife adored the roasted chestnut soup with smoked trout. plus the service was perfect - prompt, efficient and professional. The 'good': Excellent food, beautiful room, attentive service, wonderful wine. Everything on the menu is easily approachable. The wine list is quite comprehensive with a few bargains and enough diversity to satisfy anyone.\n\nThe 'bad': Perpetually mobbed and somewhat of a 'happening' place. So, expect a hip crowd where B-list celebs are whisked to tables before you and prime-time waits (forget getting a table as a walk-in) are becoming too frequent. I love it here, but the vibe is becoming a bit too hip with a lot of tables occupied by the well-heeled crowd.\n\nThe 'ugly'. Prices are getting higher than the nearby Time Warner Center. If you don't want a mortgage on your meal, diners might consider getting Michael White's (excellent) cookbook and trying it at home.\n\nAll that being said, it's a reliable place for an excellent meal.

As a longtime customer of Marea, I am truly disappointed with how much the place has changed. After spending over $250 for what is supposed to be a 5-star experience, the service has been a 1-star experience. The hosts did not thank us as we left the restaurant and waiters were not as friendly and welcoming as they had been during previous visits. As i left the restaurant I made eye contact with one of the hosts or managers in a suit and said thank you and he did not even put on a smile. We visited Marea this past Sunday, April 26. We visit New York about every three months. We always make it a priority to go to Marea. The setting of the restaurant, and the surrounding natural light, simply makes the dining area very unique for New York City. Each of our four servings, starter & main, were all very good. And, one can always tell a lot about a restaurant about the bread, which is great. The olive focaccia bread is a must. The highlight of the meal was our wine and the recommendation provided by the wine sommelier, Alexander. The recommended wine, Ronchi Di Cialla, Ciallabianco was just right. Perfect guidance and recommendation...

I've easily eaten here a dozen times and have yet to have a bad meal. Dishes have evolved over the years, but there is a continual focus on taste. Service is sometimes a bit harried and table spacing is too snug for my taste but these are easy to forgive. My favorites are the lobster and buratta appetizer and almost any of the pastas. Seafood is usually flawless. Portion sizes are more than adequate. The wine list is extensive and sommeliers are well informed. My recommendation is to make a reservation, go with the sommelier 's recommendation and pick almost anything off the menu. You won't be disappointed. Easy walk from Lincoln center and open late enough for post theater dinners.

We have eaten here many times before and enjoyed our meals, but this time we were given the worst table in the restaurant. There is a table by the kitchen, right under the air conditioning vent, next to the computer and water station. We got it. We asked nicely to be moved. We were told no. Half way through my zucchini soup, it was cold from the air conditioning.... Same goes for my pasta. My husband and I felt like we had frostbite. We had asked if the air could be turned up, which happened for about 3 minutes, then back to status quo. On our way out, we complained again and got 2 free cup cakes. Do not honestly know where to begin and I don't think I have enough room here to write the full on review I would feel this experience deserves. I'm not sure who I am more disappointed with - the restaurant for being so sub par or the Michelin rating system for creating such extraordinary expectations from a 2 star establishment. While there were some, albeit few, elements that were just good, there were far more that were not good. Instead of a comprehensive review with detailed explanations as to the why, I will just the what. \nThe 'Good':\n2 out of 3 pastas were good. \nThe desert donuts were good.\nThe bread was good - though only came by once - not enough. (I'm trying to not be 100% negative).\nThe 'Not Good':\nThe amuse bouche (crudo/raw fish) was pre-prepared and came from the fridge - I know this because the corners of the cut fish were actually dried out and hard. Gross.\nThe crudo/raw fish appetizers were basically inedible, not only for the same reasons as the amuse, but also the slicing of the fish were technically cut wrong, making the slices extremely tough and chewy. Last thing I wanted to do was masticate raw fish in my mouth for 45 seconds before spitting it out.\nFusilli pasta with bone marrow - the flavors were fine, however the bone marrow 'pieces' were cold gelatinous chunks reminiscent of fat pieces, rather than delicate marrow that one one happily spreads on toast. \nScallop entree - had way too much use of citric acid, to the point that I thought I was eating a sour-patch kid along with my scallops. \nPorcini crusted halibut entree - shameful. Completely dried out and rubbery, to the point the porcini 'crust' was actually crunchy and burnt.\n\nI'll just end there as I am running out of space. Needless to say the entire experience felt extremely rushed; started with one serve that disappeared, ended with another; never got checked on to see if there were any issues with the food. \n\nJust can't believe this was rated 2 Michelin stars - at all.

I have been a huge fan of Michael White since he opened Convivio years back. I also am a big fan of Osteria Morini, his downtown restaurant. I was very excited about eating at Marea; however, the experience was disappointing. We had the 4 course tasting menu in order to try the different foods. Unfortunately, the antipasti of Polipo was very tough and chewy, so much that we commented to the waitstaff. Our waiter was nice enough to take it off the bill at the end, but we go out to eat to enjoy the food and the ambience. Two times the waitstaff brought us food that was not ours and he had to take it back. The rest of the meal was good, but not exceptional. What can I say about Marea that I haven't already gushed about? The cuisine continues to the best in New York in our humble opinion, and the service aims to please. As for ambience, there was a famous anchor woman eating at the bar in the bliss of anonymity, while other diners reclined at their tables, each absorbed in his or culinary reveries. The seafood is our absolute favorite, but the pastas are consistently excellent as well. Wines are a bit pricy, but the sommelier if happy to guide you at whatever price point you feel comfortable with. As always, a win-win.

Our food was excellent. Wish we had tried the fusilli that I have read so much about since our visit, but we enjoyed a selection of oysters that we asked the server to select. We shared and both loved the octopus appetizer. My husband ordered the lamb which he said was very good, and I ordered the butter-poached lobster, which was also very good. I ordered a side of wild mushrooms (I rarely order a side dish, but I love mushrooms.) which were good but nothing spectacular; I wouldn't order the mushrooms again. For dessert we shared the panna cotta which was refreshing as it was served, if I remember correctly, with a raspberry ice; it was a nice combination. The selection of rolls was also good. My wife and I both ordered pasta dishes with seafood and felt that the quantity of seafood was very disappointing. The price for the pasta dishes was $35 which I don't think is unreasonable given the setting and the location for what we received, but we were willing to pay more for a better dish. Perhaps they should have charged more and provided more seafood. Meanwhile, we were never offered grated cheese for our pasta and we did not receive the butter for our rolls which we requested.

The waiter (a big man) was very unfriendly. When i paid the bill he said 'do you want money back'. Suggesting he wanted to keep the rest as a 35% tip! It is amazing how they can tolerate a man like this in a nice restaurant

My family and I have been frequent customers and every time in the past have raved about the superb food and service and recommended this restaurant to many. This visit was a disaster from start to finish. It appears that the restaurant has had a complete staff turnover. The usual personable and professional waitstaff has been replaced by impersonal, robotic, and unprofessional waitstaff. The food is no longer exceptional - it is mediocre at best. Our usual dishes of signature fusilli pasta and the antipasti polipo were disappointing. The polipo was tough and chewy and the delicate dressing of the accompanying greens and potatoes was nonexistent. The signature fusilli lacked the usual rich deliciousness of the marrow and the sauce seemed to separate leaving behind a plate of oil. The tagliolini pasta also left behind a plate of oil at the bottom. Dozen oysters, sgombro, and lancia apps were good. Service was terrible- we ordered 2 polipo, dozen oysters, lancia, zuppa, sgombro--for 5 people. This was brought out all at once with only 2 sharing plates. We requested another sharing plate, divided up the lancia(so my husband had plate) and my mom used her bread plate! Our 5 entrees included 3 signature fusilli , a halibut entree that was delicious and the lamb shoulder (agnello) and the tagliolini for the table. At no point, were we ever asked how our meal was. We ordered bomboloni and sorbetti for dessert. Upon leaving - host( wearing a sling) inquired how our meal was- my husband answered 'Marginal'. The host did not bother to follow up with any comment and to cap the evening off the coat check person came with our coats and promptly dropped my mom's coat on the floor -she waited for me to cross the distance to pick it up as she was holding 2 other coats. After many years and many superb meals, one has to wonder what has gone wrong ...cost cutting measures to offset wage increases?

We can't say enough about Marea! What a memorable dining experience. From the greetings by staff to the excellent service to the delectable food -- it was 5 star dining all the way! The fusilli with octopus and bone marrow was spectacular but the soft shelled crab was ambrosia!! Best I've ever had! This was our first visit to Marea but it will not be our last!

My wife and I had dinner at Marea on a Thursday night. The restaurant was jammed from the time we arrived until we left, after 11pm. Inspite of this the service level was impeccable. The dishes were perfectly paced and executed with artistry. I've never had better sea urchin.

We have been to ai fiori several times and enjoyed it but wanted to try Marea. I had the two course weekend lunch. I chose the grilled octopus and seared scallops. Both beautiful and excellent. My H had the pasta w/shrimp and rosemary which he liked very much. The only shortcoming was dessert. Even after getting a recommendation for the least sweet dessert, I found the dessert so sweet I had to send it back. My H who has a sweet tooth agreed that it was way too sweet. This is a ubiquitous problem in the US but I assumed a restaurant of this quality would be better. Settled on affogato which was fine. Would definitely go back when next in NYC but stop at the savory dishes. Wine by the glass also very good.

I can't believe how this restaurant was awarded 2 Michelin stars, there is no comparison with all the other restaurants who have really deserved Michelin stars. Marea doesn't even deserve one star. The quality of food is good, but the way the food is cooked is average. Presentation is not at the level of a Michelin starred restaurant and the waiters can barely pronounce the words of the ingredients correctly, hard to understand. The dish is placed in the table in a rush, not the way it should be placed in a 2 Michelin stars restaurant.

Marea always manages to please. The only disappointment of our visit (Saturday brunch)was the oysters being poorly schucked. There was fragments of shell in a number of the oysters and the presentation of each oyster was a little sloppy. It didn't ruin our meal though. We had a great time.

simply: the best\nBegan with 2 glasses Billecart rose champagne by the elegant, well peopled bar. Restaurant decor is modern and handsome. Tables well spaced for quiet or romantic conversation. Ricci in season, now from Maine, succulent and sensuous. Crudos were new to the menu: buri, a fatty fish similar tuna belly but milder, and deep ocean perch w a sprinkle or sea salt and orange blossoms: truly wonderful. Pasta course was world class: strozzaprete or garganelli: your choice of excellence (my favorite and restaurant classic, fusilli w brazed poilpo and bone marow is always a perfect choice) Pesce was a whole branzino: well presented and prepared to succulent perfection (again, our favorite) sides were fungi and fingerling potato w rosemary.\nCompliment this with a bottle of sangiovese, Podere Forte, 2006 chosen by maestro sommelier, Francesco Grosso, and there is no reason to search any further: not in NYC, SF, or Chicago. Perhaps not even in Italia. You have just dined in America's best.

I have tried for many many months to get a reservation here and it was worth the wait! Our party of four had reservations for 5:15 with theatre tickets for 8:00. Each course of the 4 course prix fixe was impeccably timed, perfectly and amazingly seasoned and delectable. Our husbands debated which of the 6 different types of oysters were the best while my friend and I luxuriated in the flavored of our lump crab pasta, halibut and the best semifredo I have ever had! All of us voted to return as soon as possible.

My husband and I were really looking forward to dining at Marea. To keep it short, our food was edible, though tasteless. Each course lacked 'something'. There were no standout dishes, and we tried a couple of the must-haves, Fusilli with Braised Octopus & Bone Marrow, and the Pasta with Crab. Main courses of Scallops and Halibut were awkwardly composed and disappointing as well. The overall feel of the restaurant was awkward. I'm usually not tuned into the music playing, but it was hard to ignore because the conversations were so low. Not a lively place at all. And it was overly warm in the restaurant, which added to our overall discomfort. Our waiter was attentive enough, but not overly helpful with things. We received the bare minimum of service. It's not a place we would visit again, given the choices in NYC, nor would we recommend it to family or friends.

We arrived at noon for our table for a business meeting to celebrate a success. The main dining room was 1/3 full and were promptly seated in the empty over flow room in the back. No windows, totally different atmosphere. We are properly dressed. I had to ask the hostess to be re-seated, which they did after a lengthy internal discussion and debate, and a considerable amount of attitude.\n\nIt is a real shame about the hostess and this policy because the chef at this restaurant is fantastic.\n\nI am finding that this frequently happens when I book using your service versus directly with restaurant.

We have lived in New York for seven years on the upper East Side and I don't know how I missed this restaurant. A well deserved Michelin 2 star, everything was perfect. Our anniversary fell on a Sunday and this limited the restaurants we could go to… It turned out to be a blessing...the oyster appetizer, the shrimp Gnocchi, the fish, a salt baked Branzino for 2 and the donut dessert were part of, and let me quote:\n OUR MENU IS RECOMMENDED AS A $102 FOUR COURSE PRIX FIXE MENU\n Crudo, Ostriche or Antipasto | Pasta | Pesce or Carne | Dolce\nThe service was fabulous...we have found the perfect Manhattan seafood restaurant.
