Having been here before it was renovated I liked the ambiance both ways, classic and restored. We were seated quickly by making a reservation through Open Table. The dining room is beautiful, but snug. I had a difficult time getting into my seat due to the glass partitions that separate guests along the exterior wall of the building. The view is gorgeous, you can see why it became a romantic hot-spot, really lovely with all the lighting, light and dark woods and lush fabrics. We even saw a proposal at the table next to ours, and the whole restaurant cheered! Sweet! Now the food, which is freaking expensive! I ordered two different beers, and didn't like either one. I had the seared scallops which were delicious and the jumbo prawns for dinner, also very good, with a lovely al dente linguini. The presentation was a little off though, with farm to table all the rage, they served the prawns in their natural state with both heads and tails, brought a bowl to discard them in, and then took that away. Though I am all for food in different presentations, this was a lot of work to prepare to eat, and my granddaughter thought it was 'kind of disgusting'. The real sore spot was the service. I have been to many expensive, high-end restaurants and the service at Tavern on the Green was way below average. I asked our waiter how she was and she said she was 'tired, and ready for holiday. She had worked double shifts over the holidays etc...' And you could tell by her demeanor that she could have cared less about us. My granddaughter asked for another roll and you could see the judgement in her mouth, and she didn't say a word. Our water glasses ran out more than once, if you see people are water drinkers you should cater to those tastes. I was really disappointed, service is what sets a restaurant at that price point apart from it's peers in the industry. They need to do more training so TOTG can be considered a world class, go-to spot again.
