About Trattoria Dell'Arte

Across from Carnegie Hall, Trattoria Dell’Arte features the largest antipasto bar in New York, a sprawling selection of seafood and vegetable specialties perfect for parties of all sizes. Designed after a Tuscan artist’s studio, the rooms include half-finished paintings, oversized sculptures of fragmented body parts, a gallery of Italian noses, a wine cellar dining room, and candle-filled private rooms. The menu focuses on northern Italian specialties such as the steak Florentine, double veal chop, seafood specialties of the Mediterranean, and unforgettable desserts.

Delightful restaurant across the street from Carnegie hall. The veal chop with porcini mushroom sauce was to die for, the best that I had ever had. Service superb. Waitstaff willing to make any modification to menu that customer could reasonably desire. Best restaurant we ate at during a week visiting New York.

We've been to this restaurant over a long stretch of years and used to enjoy the food. But the last two times we've found the dishes very heavy and salty. The 100-layer lasagne is too rich and overwhelming in size and taste. I ate one-quarter of the dish and left the rest untouched. We go there before an event at Carnegie Hall, but with so much heavy food, all we want to do afterward is go home to sleep it off.

The staff is lovely and made us feel at home; they were especially solicitous of a friend who arrived early. We had a very good meal before attending a concert across the street at Carnegie Hall. It was a pleasure.

I came to this restaurant because of the positive reviews. I really didn't see it as anything special.\n\nDinner was pasta with seafood. The portion was on the small side but the food was good. The dessert was actually bigger than my dinner!\n\nThe value is sketchy. One glass of wine, small entree, dessert and coffee was $65.00 (without tip!).\n\nThe restaurant is large and every table was full. Even though they had a full house, the service did not suffer. It was noisy so keep that in mind.\n\nI enjoy Italian food every once in a while but I doubt that I'll be back again.

Wonderful, wonderful place. We always go when we are visiting from Atlanta. Everyone made us feel like family. We were near the check in table and all the guests were treated like family regardless of appearances. The maitre d went out of his way to help us. I was moaning about the Carnegie Deli being closed and wanting their cheesecake and he found me some at the restaurant's sister hotel next door!

Not like anywhere else in New York. The lasagna, even with '101' layers was baked to perfection. The veal chop parmigiana is just ridiculously delicious (but too big NOT to share). The management couldn't be more accommodating to our requests and the wait staff was highly attentive. Make sure to leave room for dessert!

Very good and authentic Italian cuisine. My filled ravioli was superb, could be a bit warmer though, but I have to say that I'm very critic with food temperature. My wife got the seafood papardele and she was very happy about her choice too. Kids share a pizza that was crusty and tasty. They sat us on the 2nd floor, which was clearly quieter than the main floor where the noisy level was quite high. Very friendly and attentively staff. Would strongly recommend. Only issue to complain is that they were out of the 2 Nobile de Montepulciano's wine from the menu. But wine menu is also very good and quite reasonable.

This restaurant, right across the street from Carnegie Hall, always has a robust business. The food is excellent. The hosts are amazing. Our server was good. But it seemed way too crowded for the available space. I know, as a veteran New York City diner, that one often has to sit in very close proximity to others, but this place seemed extra crowded -- particularly with all of the winter coats for which there appeared to be no way to check (maybe I missed it but there were winter coats hanging off of virtually everyone's chair). You need a reservation for sure, but the food makes it an incredible experience. At lunchtime this place seems to be a media hangout, given its proximity to the CBS Broadcast Center, 30 Rock, and (relative proximity) to ABC.

The food was good, not superb. But the waiter was spaced out, walked away several times before waiting for our order, seemed entirely disinterested. Would have been better to sit in one of the alcoves.

Trattoria is my favorite restaurant in NY. The food is fantastic - great portions, high quality meats (veal milanese or veal parmesan the size of a bathmat), terrific for vegetarians (try the portobello mushroom parmesan), diverse wine list, and healthy pour of a cocktail. Love, Love, Love this restaurant! I have been eating at Trattoria Dell'Arte since moving into the neighborhood nearly 14 years ago. It never, ever disappoints. The wait staff is fabulous and the hosts always make you feel special. We never miss an opportunity to introduce our out of town friends to this amazing spot and this most recent time, our three friends visiting from Southern California were as impressed as everyone else we have introduced to this restaurant. Marco waited on us and he was delightful. I requested a table in the main dining room and my request was honored, which I really appreciate. Thank you for a wonderful evening with great food!

Previous visits to this restaurant have been enjoyable. This one was very disappointing. My husband and I each had the Seafood Pappardelle. Both dishes was unevenly heated. The noodles were totally hardened and congealed. Almost not edible! We did not mention anything to each other or to the waiter. We were engrossed in conversation with our friends.\nThis may just have been an off night for the restaurant, but I do not think I would return.\n\nRuth

Had reservation for Thanksgiving night at 8:45 p.m. choosing this place based on listing of The Top 100 Highest Grossing Restaurants in America. Arrived reservation 10 minutes late, they told us we could not be served because restaurant closed at 9 p.m. and were offered antipasto from the bar. Are they serious? Visiting NYC for Thanksgiving would anyone make a dinner reservation to have cold antipasto. Horrible experience they should be off the Top 100 list.

I was not happy with the fact that after giving my Credit Card for payment and when I received it back with the detailed bill I found out that I was charged two bottle of wines, when we in fact I had ordered and consumed just one.\nIt does not look that this is an honest mistake. It gives the impression that because we were a group of 8 people a $ 79 bottle of wine added to the bill would go unoticed.\nI think a better attention and control can avoid this unfortunate situation.

My experience at Trattoria dell'Arte was mixed this time. On the negative side I found the prices on the high side- higher than I remember. I also had a little trouble finding something on the menu that appealed. My appetizer was OK (only) and overpriced; the main course was heavy and salty.\n\nOn the positive side, the service was very good, with helpful and friendly staff (who also provided 2 glasses of prosecco on the house). There is a nice ambiance, though I also found the 'energetic' noise level made it difficult to have a conversation.\n\nThe last time I ate at Trattoria dell'Arte was during the summer, when we snagged a table just inside the open windows, so it was essentially sidewalk dining with less traffic noise. We had 2 excellent salads and shared a delicious pizza. Again, the waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. So I may return in the summer, when one can have lighter fare. (P.S.: I might have happily gone for another pizza this time, but that was only offered after 7:45 PM, after our curtain.)

We went for brunch, bad service, bad food, bad value, nice atmosphere. My Mom and wife ordered the Dover sole, very expensive and shockingly fishy – – like a really bad long John silver Restaurant meal. \nLunch for four was $380 without a drink. \n The coup de grace was when the other waitress offered the table next to us Prosecco which apparently was free for everyone having brunch, but was never offered to do anyone at our table. After my wife asked about it, our waitress was clueless enough to say that all the other tables (a mostly empty Sunday Brunch) were 'VIPs. In short the whole experience was laughingly terrible. This is not the same place that it used to be. Cross it off your list.

This place was awesome! My daughter and I are foodies and we both agreed the meal and service was outstanding. We started with a nice glass of wine from their generous selection of vino, and then we shared a caprese salad appetizer. The tomatoes were huge and very fresh, the cheese was heavenly (I forget what kind of cheese they used, but it was even better than the buffalo mozzarella that normally accompanies this dish). I had the ravioli, which was perfectly al dente and smothered in a rich tomato sauce. Yummo!! My daughter had the meat ravioli of some sort and she also enjoyed her meal thoroughly. We had no room for dessert, but they looked very tempting as well. The staff were super friendly and warm. They seated us right away, chatted with us for a few minutes and made us feel very welcome. In the bathroom they even had little cups with a mouthwash dispenser....its the thoughtful little things that make a difference. We got a kick out of the artwork on the walls ...you have to see it for yourself to decide if you find it offensive or fun. We found it interesting, but neither of us are bothered by artists doing work 'outside of the box' so to speak. Both the inside and outside of the restaurant are very pretty, makes you feel like you are at a little bistro in Italy. Our waitress was attentive but not overbearing. All in all, a great dining experience. We loved it so much we put it on our bucket list to make sure we go there again next time we are in NYC, which we go once every few years.

Walked into a very friendly greeting. We asked to sit at a table near the window to watch people on the street during our dinner. Host was very accommodating giving us a nice table in the corner. Meatball appetizer was amazing, definitely recommend. Dinner was also very good, fish was very tasty with just the right amount of sauce. The pork was also very tender and flavorful. Although we were already stuffed from the large portions we had to try dessert which was simply incredible. Overall we had a wonderful dinner that far exceeded our expectations considering its locations. We tend to enjoy the little cozy spots on the upper east side. If you're heading to a show a Carnegie Hall, this is a great place for a pre-show dinner.

We returned to the Trattoria Christmas week , after many years away. It's everything we wanted in a NYC dining experience. First, the servicer was attentive and gracious. The food was amazing, with the carbonara being the best we've ever had.We almost skipped dessert because of feeling so satisfied, but when we saw the cannoli, we had to try. Best ever, with a thin, cookie type of shell. The atmosphere had a lot of hustle and bustle, but it was Christmas and festive and fun!

This is the 5th time I've been to this restaurant, and sadly, probably the last. I realize that the timing wasn't the best--right before New Year's, but I was saddened to have such a negative experience. I brought my daughter (who's been there 3 previous times), and a friend who brought her 2 daughters. They had never before been to the restaurant. I had been raving on and on about how amazing Trattoria was. I was contacted twice by phone to confirm our reservation. We were sat almost immediately (5:45 reservations for 5 on a Wednesday afternoon), but our experience went immediately downhill from there. We were rushed into ordering off what their new, condensed menu. There were no specials and it was definitely more pricey than the last in 3/2016. I ordered a 2011 bottle of wine for $66 and was given a 2012 and told, 'sorry' that there were no longer any 2011's available. We were then blocked into our table by a steady line of customers awaiting their tables that lasted thorughout our entire meal. I've sat downstairs before and this was never an issue. The noise, the stares by onlookers at our food, the inability to leave our table to use the restroom, was very frustrating. We were given water once, asked for another basket of the bread--which we never received, and our waiter disappeared after our food was brought out, not to return until we had to flag him down for the bill. The menu change was very disappointing. My favorite was the spinach fettucini alfredo with prosciutto and broiled parm on top. The pasta dishes were severly limited as were all of the other items that the restaurant used to list on their menus. I'm hoping that others have complained about the disappointing menu changes and that the restaurant will bring back the old menu. Other details that were missing were the overly attentive and friendly waitstaff, and even the silly paper rings with the 'famous noses' that adorned each napkin at the table setting.

Terrific restaurant in Manhattan's busiest area. Excellent Italian cuisine. Our three antipasto selections were delicious (potatoes, stuffed peppers, zucchini). Bolognese was exceptional. Service was attentive and steady; didn't need to worry about being late for Broadway show. Lack of prices on the menu seems unnecessary and is a bit unnerving, but final bill was what we expected. Still, that's why I gave it three for ambiance: it made me nervous, detracting from the otherwise fine experience.

For entries we had lasagna, which was just so so, chicken cacciatore, which was good, and I had gluten free pasta with pancetta and olive oil sauce, the dish itself was okay though pancetta was over fried , but pasta was lukewarm so it cut into the overall taste. I asked to move, but was told the restaurant was full. My wife had ordered a cocktail and I asked the hostess for the bill. We were then moved to another table. We have eaten at this restaurant 5–6 times. The food is wonderful, and when you check-in, you are greeted warmly, almost as a long lost relative. Everyone is responsive to your being there. It's a busy time of the year, and while I am mindful of that, this restaurant is not cheap. We were hustled to the mezzanine and seated at a table that was not completely set – – no napkins and no water glasses. It took a while for our waitress to get to us, but when she did, she was lovely. Unfortunately, we were seated next to a party of 10 (we were four people) and not surprisingly, they had had a great time, such that we could not hear each other; again, this is not unusual.\n\nThe sense we got was that'Turning tables' was the name of the game last night. We will go back. What I wish the warm and friendly greetings continue throughout the rest of the meal in the future. I want to be clear that no one was rude, no one was unresponsive, but if we had had very little to say to each other, we could've finished in 17 minutes. I love this restaurant and I'll go back.

The service was as good as can be expected with a filled restaurant in 3 floors but wait staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The food portions are small for the price, but very tasty. The noise level on a Saturday night two weeks before Xmas was out of control noisy to the point of unpleasant. The place was overflowing which made the constant knocking into my chair by other diners or waiters a bit annoying. I'd recommend going there at off hours in an off season.

Suffice to say, my husband orders the same thing every time we go here! He feels that the tuna is the best he has ever had (and he has had it quite often. What I love about this restaurant is that the appetizers are great and you can make a meal out of them along! The steaks are great and you can ecen get very authentic ITALIAN pizza! Love the wait staff as well!!!

I think the Trattoria is awsome. The Pastas and Veal dishes are superb. My wife and I have enjoyed every meal there for at least the past 15+ years, but who is counting. A great attentive wait staff is ready to serve us. The Italian wines offered from the Borolos, Super Tuscans, etc. are outstanding. Kudos to a great NY Italian Restaurant.

Despite incredible crowds, were greeted enthusiastically and seated promptly for a pre theater reservation. Our server was pleasant, but distracted. Subsequent to appetizers being served, it seemed as if the table disappeared from her view. We asked several times for additional water, which was not served, our dinner came and we had to clear our own plates, a second bottle of wine was not an option. After finally getting up from the table to speak to our server, she claimed it was 'her support staff' who were falling down on the job. A manager did come over and apologize, after which we had to wait for our check (after several requests) and then again to actually pay. What could have been a very nice, enjoyable meal turned otherwise due inattentive wait staff and management.

The food is a delicious overload of carbs, the gourmet pizzas and pastas are phenomenal because they utilize wonderful cheeses, delicous meats, and everything is made from scratch. Discerning customers will definitely notice the difference. It's like an upscale version of Sunday dinner at Nanna's house. My favorites are their meatball pizza, pesto ravioli, and the house special lasagna.\n\nTry to save room for dessert. The tiramisu and dual-gelato tartufo are definitely worth the extra hour in the gym next week. The lemon cake topped with baked Alaska is such a gigantic slice that you'll forget the Carnegie Deli is closing for good this month. Pro Tip: They make a delicious and strong Irish coffee here. Which is good because the bar at Carnegie Hall is insanely expensive and a jolt of caffeine should prevent that cheesy pasta food coma from washing over you and have you snoring through the London Philharmonic Orchestra.\n\nThis restaurant gets very noisy on the ground floor, but if you're going to Carnegie Hall, or a show nearby, there's definitely nowhere any better for Italian food.\n\nPro Tips:\nWhen they are busy, ask to be seated upstairs for a MUCH quieter dining experience and a faster upstairs service bar that handles less people & gets drinks out much faster. There's less ambiance upstairs, but less headaches also. You won't have trouble flagging down your server while dining on the second floor. And the staff here is friendly, efficient, and helpful.\n\nThere are also private rooms downstairs if you feel like booking a big meeting, or private event - like throwing a Carnegie Hall birthday party for a dozen friends.\n\nAlthough the menu states that the restaurant doesn't serve their gourmet pizzas until after 7:30, always ask them because they will usually make pizzas at that time anyway - especially on week nights.

I used to eat there all the time but haven't been back in years. The noise level was too high so we ate upstairs. I was appalled at the prices. $30+ for pasta is just too much but we stayed anyway....the pasta was excellent but I'll never ever return to pay that much for pasta. It's a shame and I realize they can get what the market will pay but between the price and the noise level, I'll not be back. Dinner time with friends in my book means good conversation but leaving a restaurant with a raspy throat from screaming to be heard is not for me.

My first visit to Trattoria Dell'Arte and we enjoyed our meal. The service is quite spotty, it's priced as high end, but in NYC it's pretty average. The waiter had an issue and got into an argument with the host that lasted too long next to our table, and we could not get our check to leave for 7 minutes. The tables are close and my chair was bumped over 12 times by one waiter who could not seem to move without bashing into my chair, and I was pulled all the way up to the table and uncomfortable. Probably won't go back, as it was not so special that I would tolerate the service again.

Sow let out 15 mins after our reservation and we thought they would be closed with no place for us to get anything to eat. We were quite pleased to find them open (they serve til midnight) and not bothered with our late arrival. We were also treated with a glass of Priseco on our arrival. My husband and I split an entree with a side of pasta since it was pretty late which was more than we could eat. We were lucky enough to get a table at the rear of the restaurant, so we weren't in the middle of the tumult. Fortunately, the sound level improved as other diners finished their meals and left. We commend your staff for excellent service. The four of us enjoyed our chicken and veal dishes very much. We had A first-rate bottle of wine that everyone enjoyed. The waiter was not a lot of help with gluten free menu choices and that is the only ding during our visit. Excellent food and drinks. However, when we arrived, you stand in a huge line which seems to combine the buffet line. They make you stand around regardless of reservation and are short when asked about it. We were also shoved into a table in the corner upstairs very close to another table. The maitre'd came over to move our table out of the way for the people behind us, and without waiting for me to get out of the way, ran over my foot with a huge ceramic table. I would have given more stars if we weren't treated so strangely the entire beginning of our experience.

Firstly, the food was great, as was the wine. For thanksgiving dinner it was very busy and we chose the set menu as we wanted to have turkey. We had a reservation (made back in August) yet it seamed as though we were fitted in at the last minute as we had to wait for our table and we were sat right by the kitchen door. The server didn't introduce herself nor lap our napkins, Dont they do this in NY? The table had a paper cover over top of the crumbs left by the previous diners. When I went to sit down I had to brush crumbs off my chair. Our bill came to +$250 for 2A + 17yr old. For that price I expect fine dining service. The restaurant was very noisy. The food was the only saving grace. I would probably not go back :-(

The red snapper dish was dry and not good. The pizza (the pepperoni) was fine. My niece just moved to the Big Apple and I was visiting for another reason. As she was a recent college grad, a night out at a great restaurant should be very special, so I researched restaurants online with an eye to ambiance, location, value and creativity. I chose Trattoria del Arte because it fit all of my criteria. My niece was thrilled with the colorful ambiance and high energy of the place overall. We were seated at once and the waiter was very attentive. We chose a sampling of six antipastos as well as splitting a bottle of very delightful wine. We were calorie conscious but didn't feel like we were as the flavors of the antipasto choices were delicious. The only drawback was the extremely high noise level. Parts of conversations were missed as diners loudly addressed each other to be heard over the din of so many other diners. That aside, it was special and memorable and just what we had hoped for.

A very busy, fun authentic, Italian dining place close to the theatres. We went before seeing Wicked and had a great night. We ran late for our reservation due to closed off streets for the putting up of the Rockeflller center Christmas tree and perhaps due to protests at Trump tower. So the cab ride was twice as long as expected. But I called them and they fit us right in with a table when we got there and service was fast when you had theatre plans, despite an obvious busy Saturday night. Great food, friendly, handsome server. Would love to go again. Went with my 2 teenage daughters and they loved it as well.

On a midweek night we found this place to be hopping. Very busy at 6:30. Perhaps it's the proximity to Carnegie Hall. Our waiter asked if we had theater tickets in case he needed to bring out our meal quickly. No rush for us. The Egglant Tagliatelle was delicious. My friend totally enjoyed her chicken dish. She lives in the neighborhood and said this experience was greatly improved over a past visit. An older crowd, like us, \nmade us feel right at home.

We had reservations at this restaurant Saturday,June 4. \nWhen I ordered my entree I asked our server which red snapper dish was better,which\nsauce. The menu stated one was baked and she said all the fish is. She preferred the entree\nwith the artichoke 'hash' I believe it was called. I'm an artichoke fan so ordered that dish.\nWhen I began eating the entree I realized there was no artichoke in this dish. It had been\nsubstituted with broccoli. I brought this to servers attention that this dish was not as stated\non menu. She came back after apparently talking to chef who told her he couldn't get artichokes that day so subbed in asparagus. That may be but it sure tasted like broccoli.\nThe server asked if she could substitute another dish and I declined. The next thing is we have\n2 glasses of champagne to make up for entree. Really, what happened to taking the entree\noff the bill????????? It was $38 and not good at all. Plus, the chef can't get artichokes?????\nIn NYC? Then that item needed to be removed or explain to the customer that it will be altered.\nI barely touched that dish and still had to pay for it. Very badly done.

Food, as always, was outstanding. Was the wife's birthday, made 6:15 reservations weeks ago, got the worst table in the house. The place was jammed with huge parties in every room. Even so, the service was pretty good, but wanted a different experience than jammed into a little table for 2 in the middle of the back (green) room getting bumped by everyone that moved in the room......

Ordered their thin crust pizza, Caesar salad and a $100 bottle of wine. Food was delivered in a reasonable period of time. No pepper on table, was not offered pepper for salad, did not return anytime to check on needs unless it was to deliver food or unless called for. Salad had very little dressing, pizza was tasteless. When ticket was brought to table, it included 2 bottles of wine. It appeared that he knew it was wrong when I called him back. He then returned with both bottles removed from bill. Finally got bill corrected. Either the waiter was not qualified to be a waiter or he intentionally originally charged me for an extra bottle of wine thinking this is an old (72) person and he will not notice.

Warm greeting from the hostess. Cocktail was good. The waitress was friendly enough. As for food, it was ok.  Had the lobster cabonara.  A very suprisingly small amount of lobster was added.  Felt it wasn't worth the money.  The pasta however was cooked al dente, which I liked.  Huge tiramisu slice for dessert.  Have no idea how one person is supposed to finish it.

We have eaten here several times over the years and always had a positive experience. This visit was disappointing. None of us (4 people) enjoyed our meals. The food came out so quickly that it tasted as if it was pre-prepared and then reheated. My chicken milanese was dry and tough. As we were going to a show and on a time crunch, we did not send our meals back. We did, however, tell our server when he came to clear the table. He was very apologetic and offered to buy us dessert and coffee, which we declined. He brought us two desserts anyway. Nice touch, but it did not make up for the disappointing meal.

I have been to this restaurant on 4-5 prior occasions and always had a good meal and attentive service. On this particular evening, the restaurant seemed overwhelmed by the crowds. After a 45 min wait for dinner, the manager came to tell one of us that the pesto had 'gone bad' and could she order something else (note they did comp that dinner and a round of drinks). My seafood risotto, one of the more expensive items on the menu was supposed to come with lobster, scallops, shrimp, clams, calamari. It came with 3 half scallops, one half shrimp and two tiny pieces of lobster. Very disappointing experience at a usually solid establishment.

Third or forth time eating here. This was our first poor experience. Ordered 3 anti pasta dishes as part of an appetizer option. After about 40 mins or more the waitress came by to say she didn't know what was taking so long with one of the three. So we gave it another 10 mins then gave up. They brought the other two - and then our mains - we never saw the third (stuffed mushroom - ??). At a place that deals with the volume of customers it does - all in all a weird experience. Restaurant waived the charge for the anti pasta dish (appropriately) - but certainly expect better given the competition for customers with the many good options close by.

We love the artisan pizzas, the antipasto bar is to die for, and a nice bowl of spaghetti with meatballs will always hit the spot. We have seen and met many a famous person while dining here. Unfortunately, the night we decide to get a table and have dinner was the night before the NYC marathon. The place was packed and extremely loud. The service was great thanks to our waiter(I think his name was Dave) but the food was lacking, to say the least. I will chalk it up to the crazy weekend. We ordered the real italian caesar salad and the seafood pappardelle. Both were excellent. we also had a glass of Pinot Grigio and a glass of Gavi. Both wines were good and fairly priced by the glass. The Cannoli in blueberrry sauce for dessert was also perfect. We heard that the lemon cake is world class and we plan to order it next time. The service was also extremely friendly, from the moment we were greeted by the host to the welcome given to us by our waitress. We only had two minor negatives. First, the menu states that pizza is only available after 7:45 p.m. Our reservation was at 7:00 p.m. so we believed that we couldn't order pizza. Then, the table next to us received a pizza. When we asked the waitress, she said the menu is accurate as the restaurant discourages parties who are going to the theater from ordering pizza. We were not going to the theater so we could have ordered a pizza and would have if we had known that the restriction only applied to theater goers. Second, we had table in the front of the restaurant next to a service station. It would not have been unpleasant for us if the wait staff was more self-aware that they were invading our limited space. This happened both when the staff congregated at the station and when they were serving the table between us and the front window. I would suggest that this table be eliminated altogether or modified so that the diners have a more pleasant experience. We understand that space is at a premium, especially in NYC; however, the restaurant wants its diners to be happy with the experience and I don't believe many would be happy at that particular table. Eating and looking at other people's rear ends is not a pleasant experience. Thanks for a nice dinner and think about eliminating that table for your future guests. Or, maybe moving the service station?

From the minute we walked in the door, we were greeted like family, made to feel genuinely welcomed. This will be a place we will come back to any time we get a chance to come to the city.

Don't know why we had avoided this place for so many years. Perhaps we thought that the fare would be the standard Italian fare. But no. The menu was creative and the special pizzas irresistible. Service was equally very nice and professional. When we walked in, we were treated like old friends, a smile and a firm handshake. Same upon leaving. We now have added the Trattoria to our (small and getting smaller) list of favorites near Carnegie Hall.

We were seated about 10 minutes after our reservation time which was fine since we were at the bar with the fun bartender lady. We ate upstairs. I didn't know there was an upstairs. Food was great but the service was very slow. Problems in the kitchen. But it was ok because the 4 of us hadn't seen each other for a few months and we got to catch up. we had ordered a bottle of wine and half way through waiting for a dinner, the sommalier brought us another bottle on the house!! He apologized for the slow service. And mind you, we had not complained at all. What a terrific way to show how you value your customers. I will be back when I visit NYC again.

We love Trattoria Dell/Arte. We go there every time we are in New York City. From Brendan, the charming Maitre'd, to the attentive servers, you'll be well looked after. The food is excellent with large portion sizes. I had a dover sole and my husband had veal parmagiana--we loved both. We also split 4 dishes from the antipasto bar--hen of the woods mushrooms w/thyme, broccolini, potatoes parmesan and home made buratta. All delicious. Just wish we had room for dessert. But we were presented with a little dish of dark chocolate w/coconut as a little gift from the chef to close out the meal.

10-15 years ago we looked forward to eating here when headed to Carnegie Hall and to its sister restaurant Cafe Fiorello when going to Lincoln Center. Both are now overpriced and frustratingly inconsistent. Some of the food is excellent; some is mediocre - not just good, but barely passable. The portions are smaller. Dishes aren't made with the same attention to detail as in the past - e.g., no longer are there shavings of lemon preserve on the lemon tart. While I suspect we will occasionally return to see if things have improved, we will no longer recommend these places to others.

We went to this restaurant before an event at the Paley Center. Our reservation was for 4 pm since we wanted to make sure we would be finished our meal in time to leave for the Paley Center around 6 pm. Upon arriving we were greeted by someone I assume was the Manager who seemed very friendly. Everything service wise went downhill after that. Even though it was 4 pm we were handed lunch menus. There was a two course prix fix but only about three choices each for appetizer and entree. We also asked to see the dinner menu - which was basically the same as the lunch menu without the prix fix - but higher prices. I am not exactly sure who are main waiter was but it took some time to get our drink order and another extended period to get our food order taken. My water glass sat half empty without being refilled and my husband's wine glass was left empty as well. We weren't asked if we wanted desert. While the price for the two courses was reasonable I guess, my portion of branzino was small. The food was tasty but in view of the service I wouldn't go back there, especially given all the choices in NYC.

I know that they're busy on a Saturday night, but the speed at which courses were delivered would shame a highway rest station McDonalds. Our fried artichoke appetizers were delivered seconds after ordering them and were unsurprisingly somewhat overcooked/dried out - I assume that they just keep churning them out (not unlike a fast food place) instead of a la minute, as one would expect at $15/dish. Similarly, our main courses arrived while we were still chewing. My ravioli was good, but at $30, it should be great. Clearly, they're assuming their clientele are tourists and don't know the difference. I've had better meals there in the past. The wine by the glass was excellent. Our server was appropriately attentive.

The food was good but not exceptional. Our service was not good. Our waitress disappeared for a half hour at a time. We ordered the roasted beets as a side dish. When we questioned the waitress (when she showed up a full 20 minutes after the food was delivered by someone else) she unapologetically said 'oh, we ran out.' Friday night reservation at 7.30. Figured that the pre-theatre crowd would be gone at this point. The tables around us were exceedingly loud and the wait staff seemed to engage in the noise with them being equally loud. Recognize it's mid-town and close to Times Square, but who raised these people (the diners)? A party was seated after us. Took in the noise, got up and left. Three women at the table in corner were practically screaming. Table behind us of people who should know better (elder adults) were screaming too. Yikes. The food was good. The service was friendly and on top of his game. (Nice guy that can multi-task and keep things moving.) However, the noise level was ridiculous to the point that we ate as quickly as possible and removed ourselves. Live in Manhattan and am well-used to the noise level of NYC restaurants. But, if you are looking for a relaxed, adult (is that the word for people that know how to behave themselves in public and use their inside voices?) meal.... then stay away.

The best way to get to Carnegie Hall is by first having dinner at Trattoria Dell'Arte, which is right across the street. Start off with the three-vegetables appetizer, each portion of three enough for two people to share. We were fortunate to have dinner there recently during the short season for soft-shell crabs, so when we heard that soft-shell crabs was a 'special' that evening, we closed our menus and looked no further. The waiter described the crabs as being small, but to us they were ENORMOUS and ENORMOUSLY DELICIOUS, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of delicate crunch. The staff was hospitable in every way, from the moment we entered to the moment we left, even bringing round chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven for us to nibble on for dessert, along with some dark chocolate with toasted almonds in sea salt. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially if you're on your way to Carnegie Hall!

We were greeted with a glass of champagne. That was wonderful. We were celebrating with our granddaughter who was attending a concert at the Weill Concert Hall. This would be her first visit. The waiter neglected to bring my salad and I shared with my husband, had I knostroown, that would have worked. I ordered a pasta dish with bacon. I was looking forward to the bacon, however, the spaghetti was hardly cooked at all and was stringy and dry. It was inedible I have severe arthritis, which makes walking difficult. When I asked for a bathroom, I was told that it was to the left right before the front door. I was not surprised that it, was down stairs, as many restrooms in New York are. i mentioned the difficulty, and the hostess, apologized, as it was grandfathered into the restaurant. She said that there was another restroom however, I probably would not like it. My granddaughter had a cast on her leg from an accident the day before. This was our fourth time to this restaurant. Only my husband's dessert came, the waiter had o return to the kitchen to place a new order. The waiter thought that it was funny that he did no tell me that the bathroom was downstairs. Have been dining at Trattoria Dell' Arte on and off for 15 years, my family and I and my business associates have always loved the atmosphere ( friendly, vibrant, energetic) as well as the wonderful service however, it seems that the quality of food /preparation has dropped considerably. You get the sense that a new chef attempted to put their own touch on existing dishes, and in the process downgraded the quality. For instance; their signature dish is a yellow fin tuna steak which in the past was seared with herbs and served with lentils.. delicious . Now it's smothered with balsamic glaze served on top of a few pieces of eggplant caponata , which are buried in the glaze. The veal chop with mushroom sauce is also disappointing; fatty and small and thrown on top of kale and beans...no mushroom sauce! Totally unacceptable for 52.00! Outside of the antipasto bar, the appetizers also left much to be desired. My sincere hope is that management has a close look at what is coming out of the kitchen and that Trattoria Dell'Arte returns to the quality restaurant that I knew and love. Our last visit was a few days ago, we were really' disappointed that we were disappointed'.

Love this place. Always a go-to on our dining list! Especially loved our waiter...Chris, he was very fun and friendly. Great service! Didn't like being upstairs so much. Didn't even know that existed, large families , very loud! Plus those steps are super steep!!! Portions are too large. Reduce the size and price a bit! :)

Our server Michael was amazing, very attentive and helped make our experience special. The pizza was phenomenal and the Halibut was the best I have ever tasted (the special of the evening). Our other entrees were equally as good. We were celebrating a birthday and our dessert (the best cannoli I have ever tasted) came with a sparkler and a song! The staff was attentive, helpful and did not rush us even though they were very busy. We would definitely dine there again when in New York.

Years go by, and this place is still happily reliable amid the craziness of Midtown West. The service was a little intrusive and pushy, enough that it needed some pushback, and dinner arrived too soon. However, it was quite good - the soft-shell crabs (special) and lasagna got especially high marks. Friends gathering for a reunion were allowed to linger after dinner, and we were seated in a corner - ideal for the occasion. I'm never surprised by the food here but always pleased, gratefully so.

I booked Trattoria Dell'Arte for a business dinner for a group in New York for team building and training. I have been there before and always enjoyed the fun atmosphere and reliable food. I knew there would be a variety of options on the menu. We enjoyed our dinner very much. The restaurant was able to accommodate our group early, which was much appreciated because there was a sudden severe rain storm and we needed to get indoors quickly. The maître d' was very gracious and seated us immediately. We had a comfortable, nicely located table and the waiters were excellent and attentive. Everyone enjoyed the food and the overall experience. Only two complaints: I received a phone message asking me to confirm our reservation and when I politely called back the woman on the phone was very rude; and I felt the options for a vegan in our group were limited. More 'clean' choices that don't involve omitting pork or chicken from an existing dish (but still paying for it) would be greatly appreciated. There are many options for a vegetarian who eats cheese, but few for someone who is completely plant-based.

We went to Trattoria Dell'Arte to celebrate my boyfriend's 24th birthday, and cap off our road trip, and can honestly say this was one of the better overall restaurant experiences we have both had in a while. \n\nTo start, as we walked in were asked preference of seating, as we were seated in the 'nose room' we called it, we were greeted with complimentary glasses of sparkling for celebrating a birthday. Our server for the night was John Z, and as both myself and boyfriend work in the service industry as well, we started joking about industry things. \n\nWe both ordered off the wine list, and ordered the Bowl of Meat Balls. John complimented us with an antipasto dish to accompany our appetizer. I ordered the Lobster carbonara and my boyfriend ordered the Softshell Crab special of the night. Both entrees were absolutely phenomenal. John complimented my boyfriend with another glass of wine, and offered deserts, however, we were both incredibly full. Nonetheless, John Z, along with the Maitre D and other waitstaff brought over two of the best cannolis we have ever had along with cappuccinos to finish off our dinner. \n\nAll in all, John Z was incredibly attentive, incredibly personable, and passionate about his trade, a true service professional. The entire experience from start to finish could not have been better, there were even points where the Maitre D was walking around with a tray of extra house baked cookies, just giving them out. The service overall was amazing, and the experience will be one remembered.

We went to Trattoria Dell Arte for a pre-show dinner and our waiter was very attentive to our timing requirements. The food was some of the best Italian cuisine we have ever had. We shared the meatball appetizer and they were tender and incredibly tasty. If I had known how good they would be, I would have ordered them for my entree. My son had the chicken parmigiana and it was the perfect balance of ingredients: a chicken breast pounded so thin it covered the entire plate, fried crispy and covered with a delicious sauce and just the right amount of melted cheese. He is a big eater and struggled to finish the portion. We were so full that we couldn't contemplate dessert even though they looked fabulous. We couldn't get the scrumptious food off our minds and went back after the show for dessert- which were just as enjoyable as the meal. Lovely restaurant, terrific service and really great food. We were excited to go and sample the Italian fare at Trattoria Dell'Arte, it was close to the Le Parker Meridien Hotel where we were staying Open arrival we were weirdly greeted by the host, when I told him we had reservations. In a somewhat snobbish/rude tone, our greet consisted of him asking me the origin of my last name. When I told him Italian, there was no futher comment and he sat us down at our table without a saying a single word. Hardly a gracious host. We contemplated getting up and leaving, until our server, Angelina, came over and welcomed us properly. We decided to stay. We had some questions on the preparation of some dishes and Angelina gladly answered them for us with a smile. Our party of three settled on ordering the braised calamari/octopus appetizer, red snapper livornese, lobster carbonara and burrata ravioli. The calamari/octopus was melt in your mouth good, tender not chewy and in a wonderful sauce. The red snapper was cooked to perfection and flavorful, and the lobster spaghetti carbonara was with a light (not heavy cream) sauce with plenty of flavor to accompany the pieces of lobster and spaghetti. Frankly, the ravioli's, while good, could not compete against the other two fantastic dishes. The desserts, were of the standard fare you would expect at a good Italian restaurant, satisfying but nothing special.\nThe quality of the food, our server and the banter at the table between our party of 3 and a second restaurant host who checked on our satisfaction on several occasions, saved the night and a complete review disaster, but that 1st host walked by our table several times without a word and left a first impression that is hard to shake off, knocking what could have been a excellent review down a notch or two and making the restaurant despite some of it's very good qualities hard to recommend.

This is a trendy New York restaurant near Carnegie Hall with an attractive interior with murals by Milton Glazer. The clientele seems to be largely tourists going to theater and while the prices reflect the expectations of a fancy restaurant, the tables are closely packed and there is an atmosphere of rush so not a pleasant experience. Perhaps 8 PM dinner would be a better choice.

We selected Trattoria dell'Arte for our 25th wedding anniversary on a friend's recommendation. We mentioned in the comments in our reservation that it was our 25th. The maitre d' greeted us and immediately poured complimentary champagne which was served to us when we were ushered to our table. The waiter was friendly and accommodating and congratulated us on our 25th. He was knowledgeable and helpful in selecting a wine after he discovered they were out of our first choice.\nAll of our food selections were perfectly prepared and very tasty, yet delicate.

A greeting with a smile is how you start your dining experience at Trattoria dell'Arte. As our table was almost ready, my husband and I were handed glasses of Prosecco for the wait.\n Once seated we chose appetizers and entrees: a straccietal chicken soup with a poached egg , an heirloom carprese salad, spinach pappardelle , and a pasta carbonara . \n For dessert, we shared a Tartuffo and tea.\n Our service was excellent as usual.\n We have eaten here before and each time have enjoyed our choices from the menu.

Normally I wouldn't want to eat outside on a busy street like 7th Ave., but Trattoria dell'Arte has a big enough area for outside dining that you don't have to be smack on the sidewalk near foot and vehicular traffic. \nWe got a lovely table near the open windows of the restaurant, under umbrellas, so it was not too noisy and not too hot.\nThe food was delicious-- an excellent salad and personal pizza-- and our waiter exceptionally friendly and helpful. It was so pleasant that we almost forgot to make our curtain!

Got a great table near the window. Server was friendly and attentive. Heard so much about how great the food was before going there. Bar was fun and hopping. Got seated earlier than our open table reservation which was nice.\nThe downfall was that we both ordered the veal special and my husband's was fresh and hot when it came out. Mine was hard dried out and cold. Almost like it had been sitting on a counter somewhere and reheated to the point of being unedible. At first I thought it might be just a fluke bad piece of veal but it was so dried out and cold that we figured my husband's was made fresh and mine was a discarded piece sent back by someone else. So disappointed. Left there thinking it wasn't worth the price and that we could find a better less crowded place to eat and spend our time and money.

This is usually one of my favorite, convenient restaurants when I am in New York. Brandon the GM really knows how to make you feel like a special guest of his. \nThis last visit, service was surprisingly bad. Had repeat requests a number of times. Ordered cocktails to relax. Right on top of the drinks came the appetizer & salads. After literally 2 bites of salad, the entrees showed up. It was not so busy that the table needed to be flipped that quick. Everything arrived so quick that they missed out on us ordering full bottles of wine, we settled for half since we still had cocktail through most of the meal. We decided to have dessert else where too, which was a same because we enjoy the desserts at Del Arte. \n\nHate writing this review because last 10 times I was there, it was a outstanding experience. I will certainly go back to give it another try fir old times sake and hope for the best again.

The first visit was great, prior review. This time it was a little later and they were a little busier but the waiter seemed to pay appropriate attention to the tables around us. It took us 2 hours to have dinner. We were finished with our entries for 25 minutes before anyone came to ask about desert and that was after asking 2 other members of the staff who said they would tell our server. Then it was another 20 min after receiving our dessert and we had to ask someone else to get our check. We ordered a not inexpensive bottle of wine and refilled our glasses ourselves. Not a big deal but at all other restaurants we frequent the waiter comes back with enough frequency to make sure our glasses are full with wine and water. They were again helpful at finding appropriate food for the kids (no kids'menu place) but the service was not good and resulted in 15% instead of 20% gratuity. The meal was good but I asked for a 'small' salad and a recommendation, he suggested one of the salads and said it was small but it came family style and meant to be shared.

Waiter assured me it would be great & rare. It wasn't great and it wasn't rare. In fact, it was well done! Need I say more? Will I return? Of course?! Better than the food was the warm, engaging and just plain lovely wait staff and management that day. So accommodating, so conversational and so gracious. We chose this restaurant because of its proximity to Carnegie Hall. I wasn't expecting anything great. Well - the food was exceptionally delicious. I had the scallop Risotto and an order of spinach on the side. it was amazing. The best part was gluten free canal's for dessert. i haven't had a cannoli in more than 10 years. Well, of course I was in heaven! Our waiter Joe - who happened to look a lot like Joe Pesci -was wonderful attentive and charming. I would go back without tix to a show at Carnegie Hall and will!

This is by far my favorite restaurant in NYC. I go at least once on every trip I make to NY. I also have family in the area and we meet up here - whether its one or 6 of us. We love eating at the bar but many folks know about that and hard to get more than 2 seats. My latest find - ask for the wine room. A bit more intimate - we really enjoyed the space. We are thinking it would be perfect for a smallish private affair as well. The menu is FAB and never disappoints. Our favorites - beet salad, the pepperoni and arugula pizza followed by the veal -- we share everything and that feeds 4 of us. I do miss the large size pizza - I liked the option of which size we wanted but it's so good, if we need more, we order two.\nThanks for always being a consistent enjoyable evening. The staff is great. Special hello's to Cynthia and John.

I always go here after concerts at Carnegie Hall, as do many of the performers. The Trattoria has an extensive menu to please all -- from vegans to carnivores. On this occasion I enjoyed the Dover Sole, a special for the evening offered with asparagus, but for which I substituted green beans. Service was splendid -- polite, efficient, and friendly (but not overly so). Everything was delicious, including the pizza (no cheese!) made with tomatoes, hen-of-the-woods mushrooms, and kale,

We live just around the corner from the Trattoria dell'Arte, and after trying (and definitely not liking) it when we first moved here several years ago, we figured we would try it again because of the great reviews we kept noticing on OpenTable... Well, after giving it another shot, I have to say that I still don't get it... The food was still only just barely ok (bland, thrown on the plates) and both the food and wines were still massively overpriced. In a city where the standards are this high and in a neighborhood where you can get great authentic Italian food, for a fraction of these prices, I wonder why people seem to like this restaurant that much. But as the French say, à chacun son goût - it just doesn't work for us.

The management team at Trattoria is spectacular. The wait staff are efficient and friendly. The food is consistently great. My faves: stuffed baby artichokes, thin crust pizzas, 101 layer lasagna (ask for extra sauce), veal chop Milanese (a ka Flintstones Veal) and my favorite NYC salad-Tuscan chopped chicken & vegetable (it's only on the lunch menu but the chef will make it for you any time). The limoncello creme brûlée is a must. The restaurant is always sprinkled with celebrities that repeatedly dine at Trattoria, not just for the meal, but because the management and servers are discrete and respectful.

A very disappointing Wedding Anniversary Dinner. We booked early because of a Concert across the road at Carnegie Hall. When we arrived it was so busy we had to wait in a long line. I have eaten at this restaurant on three visits to New York this year. I have eaten great Italian food for over sixty years, and I love the flavors in the food prepared in this kitchen. The dishes are consistently excellent, and the service has been extremely friendly and attentive. It is close enough to the theatre district to be an easy walk after an early dinner, and of course it is right across the avenue from Carnegie Hall. Ask for Michael as your waiter; you'll be glad you did.

Was very impressed that it is still really excellent after all of these years. BUT, the prices are a bit ridiculous. Pastas well into the $30s and meat entrees to $50. I guess their rent is very high but it still fees like they can get away with it due to a lack of nearby competition. At least the quality is high, and potions are large. Still a good buzz in the room with people who look like they have been dining here for years.

We were meeting our friends from Australia for dinner and suggested the Trattoria, since we had always had a excellent time there. I requested (when I made the reservation) a table where we would be able to have conversation and hear each other. We were seated upstairs which looked as though it may fit the request, however this wasn't the case, not only did a huge graduation party show up, but when we started there was a table behind us that seemed to communicate only by yelling at each other. Noise level was unbearable. Our waiter was snotty and not at all helpful (which in our previous experiences was never the case). The food was eatable but that is all I could say for it. I think that we will think twice before returning and if then not with company that we are trying to show a good time to.

Trattoria Del Arte has been a favorite midtown spot for a dozen or more years. So disappointed that those days are over. From the young amateur waitress service, to the overcooked shank and gummy risotto, to the table by the bus service in a half empty restaurant, this was the worst experience at this landmark, that I have ever experienced. We are obviously not alone in our views, because a once crowded antipasti bar now sits almost idle looking tired while the young new service staff acts as if you have never been to a nice restaurant before. We had eaten at Trattoria Dell'Arte once before; the food and service were outstanding so we decided to come back again when we were in town to see a show. Our reservation was for 6pm, but we got there at 5:30pm and they happily sat us early. We had requested to sit outside which they graciously granted. You have views of Central Park, Carnegie Hall, and Time Square. The food was outstanding. We had the tomato caprese as an appetizer. My husband had the ravioli and I had the seafood risotto. Again, everything was delicious! My only complaint is that the service wasn't as great as the first time. The first time our waiter was very attentive and answered any questions we had. This time, our waiter came to our table TWICE. Once to take the order, and then to deliver the check. Our food and drink were delivered by other employees. I understand waiters can have their hands full but we saw this gentlemen mingling with the other guests and/or standing at the bar with the other staff. It's a shame because we wanted to order dessert but the waiter A. never asked and B. because the service was so slow, we didn't have time even if he did stop to check. The 3 of us dined here before going across the street to see a concert at Carnegie Hall. Could not have asked for a better location, especially since it was a big downpour that night. \n\nOur evening started with a handshake from the maitre d. That was a pleasant surprise to be greeted so enthusiasticaly. It was a 5:45 reservation and the restaurant was already full! We shared 2 different appetizers: Prosciutto Di Parma and braised octopus & calamari. Both were delicious! For entrees, I had lobster spaghetti carbonara, and my other 2 companions had lobster seafood risottos. One liked it, but the other thought it was way too al dente. Not sure if she was fussy or actually knew her stuff. Either way, she only ate half of her risotto. We comforted her by ordering another bottle of delicious Montepulciano and a slice of tiramisu. \n\nOverall, it was great. Not sure if $36 each for our lobster dish is a bit overpriced considering there weren't too much lobster on our plates, but given the location, they can price it anyway they want and people like us will dine here again and again. Plus, that handshake stood out 8-)
