With a stay at Maison Charles Maurice in Chalais, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of René Carré and Trarieux Square. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The house is beautiful. A well renovated stone town house with a very nicely designed chic interior. The original walnut staircase was a real feature. There is a courtyard to sit and have breakfast at the back of the property. The bedroom and ensuite shower were really lovely with enough space to move around. Right in the centre of town so you can walk to the local shops and supermarket within 5 mins.
Cons: We arrived within the 3 hour check in window to a wide open door and not a soul around so wandered about for a while which could be a worry as far as security goes for guests. I think it's important to have someone on duty in the property for security and to support your guests. It was very hot so air conditioning or at least a fan would have been appreciated. It would also be helpful to have the wifi code displayed somewhere in the room to avoid having to email the host to ask for it.
Pros: Great property. Very interesting features and very clean. Will certainly be back.
Cons: Nothing. All was good
Pros: Location. Air conditioning.
Cons: We booked an extra night with the hotel direct the week before we travelled. I was surprised that the room was not serviced. Only one small shower gel for 2 people for two nights was not enough. Tea and coffee not replinished, no milk at all not even powdered.
Pros: Lovely renovated town house in High Street with nicely furnished lounge & dining areas & good size bedrooms. Very friendly hotelier with warm greeting & great continental breakfast. Ate outside in the courtyard- nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended.
Pros: Beautiful townhouse, with spacious rooms. The staff was great and made everything to make us feel at home. We'd definitely recommend this place. We have a baby and it was perfect for her as well!
Pros: Nice property and quality of accommodations. Plenty of space.
Cons: Not much to do in town and limited staff coverage, while we were there.
Pros: We had such a warm welcome. The decor is so well done and it has such a calm and serene atmosphere. The breakfast was beautifully presented in the charming courtyard. It has just been such a lovely experience.
Pros: This was a house with character and style an and it was perfect located for a visit in the area and that small town. The landlady was very kind, smart and helpful. A perfect location for a weekend break
Pros: Almost everything
Cons: Would have preferred a shower over a bath without wall or curtain.
With a stay at Villa 2 Pas Sages in La Roche-Chalais, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Eglise Saint-Fort and Circuit de Haute Saintonge. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Lovely comfortable beds and a superb country river location.
Cons: No toilet door was rather off putting so you must like who your sharing with. Kettle lead would not reach a power socket.
Pros: To swimm in the river dronne attached to the property
Pros: We went to a wedding at chateau de la velouze and it was the perfect place to stay...Just 5 mins by car away! The hosts were great and extremely helpful with anything we needed and the chateau itself and all the renovations are top notch! It was super clean, and quiet, and the beds are very comfortable. Breakfast was fresh French croissants, bread and jam, coffee and juice and was all fresh and delicious. The grounds are beautiful and it’s located right on a river so they even offered a paddle board to enjoy the water!
Cons: FYI: There is no pool like the listing says, just the river.
Pros: Rooms were very large, very clean and beds very comfortable. Lots of outside space if you have children and fresh water river to swim in during warmer months.
Cons: Breakfast very basic, we were 3 couples and a 2 year old child and all that was offered was a baguette and 1 jug of orange juice. Not enough for everyone to have something for breakfast. On arrival we parked in-front of the entrance so we could unload our bags and child rather than having to carry it from the front gate, we were asked if we could then move the car when we went out again which wasn't a problem. Mid getting ready to go out we were rudely asked for the car keys so the owner could move the car immediately despite us leaving in less than 10 minutes time. He took the keys and moved it which was totally unnecessary. Given there are no instructions on arrival as to where you should park this was not the way to act as a host. We then accidentally left our childs soft toy in the room, despite frequent emails and phone calls and promises to return to us, this has been 'forgotten' to be done upon my last conversation. Given it is not the cheapest accommodation in the area and despite the rooms being great, this 2 things don't leave a great taste in your mouth after the trip.
Pros: Spacious room, nice grounds and very clean
Pros: The property is very tastefully decorated and the room has everything you need. Bed linen and towels were good quality.
With a stay at Le Fagnard Chambres D'hotes in Chalais, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of René Carré and Saint-Jacques Church. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: We stayed two nights for a wedding. The house has a lot of charm and is well situated in Chalais - it took not much more than an hour to drive there from Bordeaux airport. Behind, on a hill stands the impressive chateau which looks out over the town - it's a nice (although steep) walk up to the chateau and then down onto the main street. The hosts were very welcoming and provided everything we needed, including a delicious buffet breakfast and really good coffee.
Pros: Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was wonderful. It was nice that the family had breakfast with us. Very nice people.
Pros: Lovely room and garden walking distance to restaurants
Pros: Beautifully decorated, great garden and walking distance in to Chalais. Sarah the goat is lovely too.
Pros: A very very sweet place to stay that has everything you need. Good for a stop-over while you're travelling in the area and the hosts were really lovely and helpful. A beautiful are, clean and comfortable rooms and a charming house.
Pros: Great value for money, very nice area and hosts and room was comfortable for the night.
Cons: Little bit noisy as it's on a roundabout
Pros: The location is a bit in the middle of nowhere, really. The ride from Bordeaux was very nice, though. The village has a couple of restaurants; we went to Le Bonne Hemeur; really authentic French where a was able to practice my French. Can't do that at le Fagnard, since the owners are English. ;-)
Cons: * It's a bit cold in the breakfast room. * The booking.com reply mail doesn't give the hotel's coordinates. This is a bit tricky because there are more villages called Chalais. We were just lucky, I guess

Pros: The breakfast was good. It was in a convenient location for us.
Cons: The shower surround was filthy but everything else was quite clean. We were surprised that they had missed it. We were sorry that the restaurant was not open on Monday.
Pros: The owners were delightful and helpful....along with Enzo the dog We were a group of 5 adults staying for 3 nights as part of a wedding celebration at the local chateau. On the day of the wedding we decided to have a picnic lunch nearby to fill in our day...we were about to go to the local supermarket when the owner said he could organise everything for us... Well...the best picnic ever...fois gras, home made gazpacho, great selection of cheese, terrines, salad with home made dressing, water and 3 bottles of wine! Thank you so much!
Cons: The premises outside front and rear needed a bit more love and attention

Pros: Family-run hôtel, they work really hard to make you feel very welcome. Food at breakfast great, we love the cosy feel.
Cons: It looks closed from the outside but don’t be put off. Opposite train station so trains can be noisy
Pros: The family who run it are so charming and warm. They made us a picnic one day which was an absolute feast. Lovely people!!!
Cons: Near train station, though that could be a good thing depending.
Pros: Comfortable beds with basic accomodation.
Cons: Was not told about charge for breakfast.
Pros: Great staff and comfortable place.
Pros: We enjoyed the table tennis, table football and darts in the games room. The lounge offered toys for the children and many books for all ages. The owners were very welcoming.
Cons: The unseasonably cold weather left the house a little cold.
Pros: Great hosts, very helpful, a lovely stay
Pros: The atmosphere - the friendliness of Lee and Dave. The location was beautiful. Lee and Dave were so accommodating and nothing was a problem. Great breakfast with a great choice for breakfast foods each morning. Fresh coffee brewed every morning. Great advice given on touring the local area - these are really super super hosts. A great pool and area to relax out the back. Rooms cool as fan provided. Clean and spacious. Bottled water provided every day. So so friendly and we really felt at home. Well done guys
Pros: Location - very pleasant and idyllic surroundings. The hosts were genuinely very very friendly, helpful and caring.
Cons: Property built probably in early 1900s smelt slightly damp but facilities provided were excellent.
Pros: David and Lee were wonderful hosts in a great location.
Cons: Nothing, stay was perfect.
When you stay at Les tuileries de Chanteloup in La Roche-Chalais, you'll be next to a golf course and within a 5-minute drive of Eglise Saint-Fort. Featured amenities include multilingual staff and a library.
Pros: Charming typical French building. On a busy road but surprisingly quiet with windows closed. Lovely breakfast room
Cons: I chose this place partly because of the advertised pool ...we arrived in 35deg heat...AND NO POOL!! At least it was turned off until July and was green and unusable. The next few days were very hot and i was very disappointed not to be able to swim and cool off as expected. I would suggest the “swimming season” should begin in May. Steep stair climb to room was a struggle with luggage.
Pros: Estelle was an amazing host for our stay in La Roche Chalais. We were in the area for a wedding and she helped make our stay excellent. The room was very comfortable and a great value for the cost. Everything was clean and in great shape. Estelle helped facilitate shuttles to and from the wedding as well. She always had breakfast out and ready for whatever time was convenient for us.
Pros: The French charm of the B&B and the breakfast was superb
Cons: Breakfast options could have been better but everything else was great.
Pros: One of the rooms was really beautiful, French chateau grandeur, with a massive bathroom. It’s called the pink room. Staff - including the puppy! - were pleasant, left us to ourselves on the whole. We had a very pleasant and relaxed stay.
Cons: Could do with a bit more for breakfast, it was very minimal. Also my friend stayed in the other room up in the eaves and reported that it got boiling hot. Pool needed cleaning.
Pros: Great rest in a big, comfortable room.
Pros: The house was lovely and the hosts.
Cons: The road noise and the choice at breakfast.
