Chez Edèll - Monpazier - Building
1
9.8 Excellent (125 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Chez Edèll is located in Monpazier, an historic 'bastide' (walled village) founded in 1284 by England's Edward I. Our gîte, on the ground floor, provides an intimate home for two. It has one large bedroom with queen size bed and a lounge with flatscreen TV and WiFi. The kitchen/dining area opens onto a small terrace. The gîte has a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities. All essential linen and towels are also provided at no additional charge. Monpazier has several restaurants/cafes offering a range of dining experiences, from casual to haute cuisine. A colourful weekly market is held in the village square on Thursday mornings, offering local produce and a variety of other goods. Monpazier is also home to a number of artists and artisans specializing in glassware, leather-work, pottery and marquetry - and even delicately carved ostrich and emu eggs! The countryside around the village is ideal for touring and cycling, with a range of attractions. Please refer to the sections "Description of Dordogne" and "Description of Monpazier" for more information on local places of interest.

Pros: John and Edelle were the most generous hosts. The breakfast was above what we expected and was delicious. John kindly planned a trip for us and we saw amazing places and sights. We will definitely return. If you are looking for great food, conversation and a village with good restaurants then this is a must.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were extremely helpful and couldn’t do enough for us, the location was very good and we would definitely stay here again
Cons: There was nothing to criticise everything was perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I don't know where to start. The owners were a lovely couple who really enjoyed receiving people at their home. The room included a full-equipped bathroom, a covered terrace with incredibly natural sight-seeings (mountains, everything green)... The breakfast was excellent, more than expected! The house was pretty decorated. And the ancient village quite recommendable. If we come back to Monpacier, surely we will repeat in Chez Edell
Cons: Absolutely nothing. Everything was perfect!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely very friendly hosts, nothing was to much trouble.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property was very easy to find, which was perfect after a long days cycle! Room was great with fantastic view from each side and the owners were very welcoming and informative!!
Cons: Nothing all great!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners of Chez Edell treat you not as tourists, but as friends. They come out of their way to help you in any possible way. We arrived with unrealistic sightseeing itinerary, which had to be given up, and John designed 3 different outstanding day trips for us. He and Edell solved all our little problems and looked after us. The house is beautiful with everything you need. The Google Earth/google maps doesn’t do it justice, it’s so much better in real life. Breakfast was sumptuous. And there is so much sightseeing in the area close by. We were very happy and content.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendliness of owners, proximity to centre.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners are personal friends but we would't keep going back there unless the facilities were excellent. They are always welcoming, the rooms are pleasant and quiet with comfortable beds. Everything is always spotlessly clean. The free wifi is fast and there's an informative pack describing the property and facilities, and plenty of local information. Breakfast is excellent - the usual continental style but John or Edell are always really happy to prepare an omelette or something if asked. Their English is of course fluent! It's always a really enjoyable stay.
Cons: Nothing, except maybe the weather. It poured that night!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very convenient location with wonderful owners and an excellent breakfast. Parking was very easy. English spoken widely throughout the town.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had the apartment at Chez Edell. It was great everything you needed. Hosts brilliant. It is literally 2 minutes from the square of this lovely Bastide town. Everything you need is in the village and the market on Thursday a definite must do. You would need a car to get around the surrounding area, loads of chateaus castles, Bastide, wine etc. For two people and if you want to visit this area I would definitely say use chez edell.

Pros: the breakfast was very good.
Cons: We felt very unwelcome and the children got told off for laughing and having a good time. We were told that we came back too early (6.30pm) after being out all day and just before heading out for dinner. Tried to leave but hey we’re going to charge us, so had to put up with it.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast. Nice garden. Very friendly hosts.
Cons: The location is a bit far from tourist sites.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Very good Breakfast. Clean facility. Nice swimming pool.
Cons: Horrible hosts. Very rude and made us feeling unwelcomed and unconfortable during the whole stay. We chose to stay two nights there based on all good reviews and excellent rating on booking.com. We were absolutely not expecting to be so unwelcomed. Mireille was "okay" but Bernard does not say Hello, does not smile, and does not even try to explain you how things work. The only thing he said was that it was his house and it was not an hotel. After five minutes, he even said that my girlfriend (who does not speak French) should stop looking at him in a weird way and smile at him instead. The situation was unreal. We were the guests but we had to make efforts, not him. We have been threatened to get kicked-out several times within the first three minutes even though we did not even unpack. To be honest, I was about to leave after five minutes. Then I realized we were here only for two nights and that all B&B and hotels in the region were probably fully-booked at this period of the year. Basically, we spent these two days trying not to make noise not to bother them, and trying to follow all the given rules without really enjoying our stay. We travel quite a lot and we regularly rent rooms in both hotels and B&B and we know how to behave. I just do not think the owners understand and know what it takes to run a B&B.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The place is beautiful and breakfast excellent
Cons: After reading all the excellent reviews, I was even more shocked by how bad we have been treated during this week end. The place is beautiful and breakfast excellent, but difficult to appreciate when you are made so unwelcome from minute 1. We were threatened to get “kicked out” when we told Bernard we were in town for a wedding “We hate weddings, don’t drink or I will kick you out!”. Following a surrealist conversation it was made very clear (repeated aggressively about 5 times) “this is not a hotel, you are staying in my house!”. We were also asked if we would come back after 11pm during our stay, and when we said yes it was made very clear that it was really annoying as they needed to leave the outside door unlocked. Overall a very unpleasant experience, where the host never smiles at you and makes you feel like you shouldn’t be here, and he is making you a favour by allowing you to stay. This place shouldn’t be advertised on a site such as booking.com as the host has clearly anger issues with some guests. It should also be made clear on the website that they don’t want weddings or people who want to come back after 11pm.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very spacious rooms with large and well appointed bathrooms, excellent breakfast with homemade jams and juices, cheeses, ham & eggs. The grounds are well manicured .

Pros: Glynnis and Derrick were just the most lovely people and made our stay delightful. They were so kind and helpful with all of our requests and the room was incredibly comfortable and clean. Such a joy to meet them and stay in their beautiful home. The pool was perfect and the breakfast was delicious. Thank you very much. Georgie and Hal xx
6.8 Good
Pros: Good directions to get there, except we were not coming from that direction. Also, although the address might be in Villarreal, the actual location is in Born which is a tiny hamlet a few km to the south. Lovely fresh fruit salad and good breakfast generally.
Cons: I could list them but it would not be productive. Suffice it to say that I invite the owners to spend a night in the room and experience the small bed, tiny bathroom, lack of cupboards, drawer space, bathroom shelves etc and think what could fairly easily be done to improve things for future guests.

Pros: Very friendly family service and beautiful views.
Cons: None

Step across the drawbridge into the 13th century and experience what it was like to live as a one of France's nobility. Château de Scandaillac is the closest thing to living in the middle ages with the modern comforts of the present. Château de Scandaillac has 10 ensuite bedrooms each uniquely decorated with antique wardrobes, chairs and tables. 6 bedrooms have beds fit for a queen (queen sized beds). One room has a 4 poster king sized bed adjoining with another bedroom with 3 single beds. There is also another king sized bed adjoining with another bedroom with 2 single beds. These rooms are ideal for a family with children. All the rooms are equipped with a safe, mini fridge, coffee maker and hot water. The stone walls and exposed beams is what gives each of these bedrooms its charm. The bathrooms all have a shower, toilet and sink with your very own bathrobes and towels. Four of the bathrooms come equipped with a bath. The large heated private pool is a perfect spot to unwind on a bright sunny day. Whether its from inside the pool, cushioned deck chair or dining table where you can dine al fresco with views of the hilly countryside reaching out to the horizon. If the weather outside is unfavorable then inside is a nice lounge area with large couch seating next to a fire place and flat screen TV. There is also a pool table where you and your compatriots can determine who is the king of pool. In the mornings a breakfast buffet is at your disposal serving fresh local fruits, vegetables, cheeses, cold cuts, cereals, jams and bread. Enjoy these French delicacies in you very own dining hall on the antique wooden tables and chairs befitting of French aristocracy or by the pool with the hills as your backdrop. Dinner is also available on reservation in the same dining areas. The kitchen has been modernized with all the equipment needed to make a great meal. This Castle is very private. Taking a walk on around the property can be very stimulating with your very own courtyard and 400 sqm terrace that views green landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. From the large balcony on the second floor you can have a better view of the landscape which is equipped with cushioned deck chairs and dining table. A beautiful medieval village is located 5km away.
