That said, we have minimal solar power, though so that phones can be charged though a signal is intermittent and definitely no wifi. The solar will also charge a light or two should you wish more light for making dinner, etc. The property is very private but there is a small village nearby with wifi and a town 10km away with large grocery store and wifi cafe. The local people are wonderful and we have a lot of international visitors to the island. Getting around There are no buses and few taxis. You'll need a car. Other things to note BRING: your own coffee, foods, drinking water, ice COOKING: many of our friends love to cook, so we have a good set-up with a large table for food prep, etc. It doesn't take long to figure things out, just use common sense and logic and imagine you are your ancestor! Our cottage is located in beautiful Providence Bay, Ontario on Manitoulin Island. Manitoulin Island is the largest fresh water island in the world with a rich aboriginal history of dating back as far as 10,000 BC. Providence Bay is a delightful village community situated on Lake Huron on the south shore of the island in Georgian Bay. It is easily accessible from Sudbury (less than 2 hours away) or from the Chi-Cheemaun Ferry as South Bay Mouth and the Ferry Terminal is only 25 minutes away.) Providence Bay is renowned for the best sandy beach on the island, with an extensive boardwalk and a children's play area. (not to mention a welcomed lack of mosquitoes and black flies) Providence Bay is a unique to most areas in Northern Ontario in that there are virtually no black flies and almost no mosquitoes throughout most of the year. The annual Providence Bay Fair in August attracts thousands of visitors to the area. The parade snakes through the town to the delight of the gathering crowds. The Fair is held on the third weekend of August each year. Providence Bay also boasts fantastic cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Another plus: it's only 25 minutes from the ferry at South Baymouth. Reviews 'Had a great stay – cottage was beautiful and in a terrific location. Our place faces south fronting on Lake Huron with over 1 km of shoreline! The log cabin, built from local pine logs in 1993, sits on its own 20-acre wooded lot, making it completely private. We are bordered by public beaches: Lonely Bay beach is one bay west and Providence Bay beach one bay east. You’ll love my place because of the complete quiet, sweet air, water view, stars and wildlife. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). This property is uniquely held as a conservation area. The log cabin is the only rental unit on the entire 100 acre lot. It sits on Dean's Bay, one of the least developed bays on Manitoulin with only 5 owners for the entire 1000 acres. We are listed with the Ontario Woodlot Association as part of Ontario's Managed Forest Plan. We are officially designated as a light-free pollution zone, making star-gazing a special treat. Our property has been family held for 30 years as an environmentally-friendly, recreational- use property. No hunting or harvesting has been allowed during our tenure. In the sping, this area boasts a multitude of wildflower varities including wild trilliums, iris, lillies, ladyslippers and orchids. We are surrounded by water systems. The southern border is Lake Huron, while to the north and east there is lake/swamp system called Sandy Lakes. The Grimesthorpe Creek runs into Lake Huron to the west. Our property is part of a 2 km wide buffer running along the shoreline. The forest cover on the property is comprised of mixed hardwoods and conifer stands. The hardwoods are primarily maple, poplar, birch and iron wood. The conifers are white pine, cedar, balsam fir and spruce. There is an abundance of leopard frogs near the swamp. Large tree frogs and the spring peepers are always heard after the snow melts. Toads are found in the bush in dryer areas. You will have access to the property's trails and the entire shoreline of Lake Huron - as far as you can walk! Although Manitoulin's shoreline can not be privately held, you must obtain legal permission to access it. As our guest, your cabin sits right on the shore and so you can walk anywhere along it. A two kilometer walk within Dean's Bay will bring you to lovely, almost private, sand beaches. Interaction with guests We live full-time on the property and so are available to help at any time. We are here to recommend activities and places to visit during your stay on Manitoulin, if you like.
