so troglo - Lavardin - Bedroom
1
9.6 Excellent (209 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Lavardin, SO TROGLO - Chambres troglodytes de charme is in a rural location, a 5-minute drive from Chateau de Montoire sure le Loir and 6 minutes from Garden of Plessis Sasnières.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: So Troglo was a unique place to stay - most rooms are troglodyte (a few not) - and this was brilliant in the heatwave (July 19) as our room was lovely and cool (and very stylish too). Isabelle the hostess was very welcoming and relaxed; she made an amazing breakfast for us with homemade bread, brioche and cake. We didn't have the evening meal but judging from the breakfast that would be excellent. The house has a lovely terrace with views overlooking the beautiful valley and a really nice pool as well. Lavardin itself was an unexpected gem with a spectacular ruined chateau, historic church and lovely river.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! The welcome, the view, the food (we have been lucky enough to eat Michelin star food around the world and would put Isabelle’s cooking on a level with the best). We also liked the decor, the cleanliness, the hosts sense of style, the history, the village & the river. All this in easy travelling distance to magical places like Chateau Chaumont and it’s international garden festival. Thank you Isabelle & Philip for a lovely few days.
Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Isabelle and her husband are wonderful hosts and we had superb meals cooked by Isabelle THe breakfasts were the best I have ever had! Great to be in a troglodyte accommodation during a heatwave Great to have a lovely pool
Cons: Would like a room with twin beds
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The dinner was excellent as was the cafe I shared with Isabelle the morning I left. I didn't have breakfast so no opinion other than to say if dinner was excellent than her breakfast would be delicious too. The shower was large and well lit
Cons: All was as expected or better
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Lovely stay in a unique place. The welcome is warm, the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable and the food is superb.
Cons: It was a return visit, so there were no surprises. The evening meal is a little expensive, but the cooking is magnificent. Please use jugs of water instead of plastic bottles.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: an unbelievably excellent experience! What a host !
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The evening meal and breakfast was outstanding. Our host was lovely and everything was home-made, including the cocktails! We loved the ambience and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We would definitely recommend this B&B and would return again with friends and family.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My stay at So Troglo was a real highlight of my trip to France. Isabelle was so generous and welcoming that it was like staying with a good friend. The troglodyte room was beautifully furnished and equipped, and I appreciated the terrace and sitting room available for guests. I recommend that everyone has breakfast to be able to appreciate another factor of Isabelle's hospitality. Fruit is from her orchard, bread, pastries and jams made by her, and all presented with the utmost sense of style. Lavardin is a lovely village and the surrounding countryside is breathtakingly beautiful. I hope I will return for longer. Thank you Isabelle
Cons: It was all perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was unusual, in troglodyte cave, but extremely comfortable and well equipped. The hospitality was excellent and the breakfast exceptional.
Cons: Nothing to dislike

Pros: We had an overnight stop on route back from UK to South West France. La Ponce Secrete more than met our expectations. Nicole made us very welcome, tea and coffee was available which we enjoyed sitting in the garden. Nicole made us a reservation at a nearby restaurant which was excellent both for quality and price. Breakfast was generous and lovely. Our friend left behind her sponge in the shower and we had an email asking if we would like it posted on to us. (We did say not to bother) All in all and excellent find and we will be back.
Cons: Nothing to fault!

Cons: Nothing!
7.0 Good
Pros: Richard the owner, very helpful. Facilities.
Cons: Decor getting a little shabby rather than chic. Due to closure of restaurant in ville, 6 mile drive... if we had known we may have booked somewhere else. Water pressure low in the morning and the church bells start big time at 6am
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Super host wonderful place and room
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful place! We stopped here on our way back to Paris from Le Mont Saint-Michel. Very small town - super quiet. Be sure to visit the Chateau behind! Would definitely stay here again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully restored, decorated and furnished historic French house in the heart of this small town. The bedrooms and bathrooms are 5-star quality. The English speaking owners provided great conversation about their time in France and helpful suggestions. Maison Conti was the most lovely place we stayed in France!
Cons: Minor point, but the town's one restaurant burnt down, but there are lots of choices for food in a 15-minute drive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Maison Conti is a lovely, historically interesting 18th century house in the centre of this charming village. Richard, your host, is enthusiastically informative about the house as well as being charming and attentive. The house is immaculately clean, beautifully decorated and presented; there is plenty of hot water for the shower; and the breakfast is a great way to start the day. Well placed, close to Le Mans, it suits as well for a stay in the area as for the one night we spent there on the way to Spain. The recommended restaurant for our supper, L'Entrcote in Saint-Jean-des-Échelles, is a true find in the area. Well done and many thanks.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Luc is a perfect host! Very helpful and attentive. He even gave me warm croissants for breakfast! The Troglodyte was perfect during the heat wave in France. A great address next to the Rochambeau château.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A great and friendly welcome, a beautiful place which was a haven of peace and just what was needed after a long drive and much work when I get back. There is much to visit in the area and a cave à vins down the road.
Cons: Nothing to dislike at the property but getting around the area is a bit of a challenge as road signs are poor. You definitely need a sat nav or a passenger who can read a map!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A very quirky place. Verycleanbed comfortable. Luc was extremely pleasant and welcoming
Cons: Would have liked a fridge
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This accommodation was fantastic. We will definitely be back. Very friendly host Very special characterful property Clean and comfortable All little details thought of Would definitely recommend

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful room carved out the stone with lots of surprisingly little touches. Pictures don’t do it justice. The village was charming, as was our host, Luc. Highly recommended. Visit nearby Vendôme while your here and sample some local wine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The loft is located in a charming village. The whole property is elegant and relaxing. We were greeted by a lantern by the street. Our host was the most welcoming and he really goes out of his way to make our experience comfortable and memorable. Our room was beautiful. We loved the experience of sleeping in a cave. We loved the shower, the view of the gardens, the decor, the sweets, the extra blankets (for winter). About a 100 meters from the property is a boulangerie with delicious breads.
Cons: My only regret is we didn't stay longer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The loft was incredible, full of small details that brings character and soul to this place. Clean and comfortable, I fully recommand the loft for a unique experience. A big plus for the host who is very friendly and offered us all we needed for a pleasant stay: tea, coffee, apples and even a nice breakfast. Thanks again.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Extremely amicable host. Most interesting room we have ever stayed in. Truly out of this world. Luc, the host was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend this place for an extremely pleasant stay.
Cons: A little out of the way, located in a tiny village.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in a cottage built into the caves, it was 40 degrees this week and it was sooo cool in there, beautifully decorated, really comfortable and we slept so well. The breakfast in the morning was perfect, the night before we said, let’s get up, have a quick but for breaky and get off!! Ha ha an hour later we were still sat there, local fresh produce, the jams were to die for, so good, so different, the bread, the juice, the coffee, just perfect. Oh and a great host too!!! Thank you so much for a great stay
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly owner, lovely place with nice furniture, public parking close by, wifi available, delicious breakfast - everything you need.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully furnished eclectic building that was a Gendarmerie 300 years ago. Greeted by owner who had an open fire burning & gave us a glass of sparkling wine each. Lovely restaurant virtually next door. Troglodyte caves right behind property. Great breakfast with choice of unusual preserves and cheeses too.
Cons: We had 3 rooms and shower in one was very weak.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Oh my - we came to the area to see the troglodyte houses and had no idea that we had booked a stay in a suite that had originally been part of a troglodyte cave. It was awesome, but not just for that reason alone. The suite was spacious, and well-appointed. The hostess was friendly and informative and helped us to make a dinner reservation - not to mention that she met us with a coupe de champagne! Her house was a decorator's dream and she put out quite a spread for breakfast. The town of Troo is very interesting with all of its caves and the Church of St Jacques that has amazing frescoes. Plus it is just minutes away form Lavardin which was selected as one of The Most Beautiful Villages of France. And it is!!!!
Cons: I cant think of a thing - you would really miss a beautiful stay if you did not book this site.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This property was a lovely surprise and Dominque a wonderful hostess and accommodated our poor knowledge of French very well. The breakfast was always generous and interesting and it was nice to occasionally sit with guests. The rooms we stayed in was charming - though important to note the steep steps.
Cons: Couldn't be better
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Stayed in the semi troglodyte room, which had a kitchen facility (we didnt need it) Excellent and `personal` as was all in this B & B (you could say it was eclectic, in the nicest way). You need VERY good knees and hips to climb to the bedroom (as mentioned on the site) but it was all very comfortable. Note this is a B & B, not a hotel, and Dominique is very welcoming and helpfull. There is a simple and reasonable restaurant a minute away, do try the local Troo wine, it very different! Troo itself is the most amazing village, built into the hillside, with many caves. It is very steep, but worth the walk, you can drive to the top.
Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly owner with lots of helpful information shared with a glass of local wine. Best breakfast of holiday.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The property was homely, lovely and exceptionally clean! Dominique was an excellent host, so warm, helpful and friendly. She prepared an absolute feast for breakfast! If anybody plans to visit Troo, look no further than this little gem that is Cote Sud!
Cons: Absolutely nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Dominique was delightful, nothing too much trouble. The accommodation and breakfast were outstanding and the village and surrounding area fascinating. There are plenty of places to eat in the village of a good standard. We'll definitely return.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Loved our stay at Julie and Philips! Really nice room and very friendly hosts who were very accommodating and have gone out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a tranquil country side stay!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There is so much that is te be liked here ; the peace, the silence, the good air, the desolation in nature, a really good bed, a lovely country style house, nice breakfast, but most of all I liked the warmth and hospitality of Julie and Philip, cause they really made me feel home in their place. My advice : the pictures from this place give already a nice impression, but the reality and stay are so much more better !
Cons: Maybe a little sign that shows the direction in Saint-Osmane can be useful (or I am really the last one on earth that travels without GPS)
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The bed was comfy. Heating worked ok despite being the coldest time of the year. The owners couldn't do enough for us. Very nice premises indeed. Attention to detail second to none.
Cons: I couldn't stand up for a wee because of the sloping ceiling. Very isolated location, difficult to find.

Cons: Open bathroom, lack of door in shower
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Delightful proprietor, wonderful decor, themed to La Fontaine Fables. Homely feel and delightful wooded surroundings along edge of river. A great place to stay.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host, Martial, is wonderful. He is friendly, approachable and has great recommendations of places to see in the local area. Our room was beautifully decorated with lots of cool, quirky details and very spacious. We stayed with our 11 month old son and there was plenty of room for his travel cot. When we went down to breakfast, we found that Martial had already put out a beautiful vintage high chair for our baby. Breakfast was really lovely - brioche, pastries, muesli, speciality tea or coffee, local honey, local juice, local yogurt and loads of homemade jam. I wish we could have stayed longer so we could have spent some time chilling out on the property's little island or having a game of tennis! All correspondence with Martial was fantastic. We paid twice by accident but he made sure it was resolved immediately. Would love to return.
Cons: Nothing! But this property is right up my alley. If you don't like exposed beams, the odd creaky floorboard and vintage stuff then this might not be the one for you.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very quirky and memorable decor and furnishings. Very much enjoyed the experience. Lots of attention to detail. Lovely breakfast with delicious homemade jams. Very helpful and friendly host.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Quiet beautiful location, very unspoiled, do not expect 5 star hotel embellishments. Good fishing Martial the owner and host is charming is extremely helpful. Dogs are made Welcome.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The place takes one pleasantly back to an imagined past! The thematic decoration (based on La Fontaine's Fables, many of which are now somewhat universal) is obsessively implemented in every detail of the place! The building is old but very clean and located on a beautiful riverside. In addition to the natural and designed beauties, and even above all, monsieur Martial, his sister, and other staff are very nice and hospitable! And local cheese and jams are very delicious in breakfast! :)
Cons: As a result of the building's age and its wooden structure, every step in rooms or on stairs makes noise!

9.5 Excellent
Pros: A pleasant overnight stay. Staff friendly and welcoming. Accommodation and breakfast excellent. Thank you.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Restaurant was and always is excellent
7.5 Good
Pros: The hotel is right in the middle of the town. Its on a corner - one side is on to a busy street and the other side is on to a quiet street. Our room was small yet pleasant. Plenty of free parking. The staff were friendly
Cons: The hotel restaurant was closed on a Sunday evening. The boss referred us to a local restaurant that he owned called The Banque which was just down the street. It seemed to be the only place open on a Sunday night. The food was good but the service was very slow.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Regarding the previous question none of the "style" choices offered were appropriate aand you should give serious consideration to adding "Traditional" as a choice! This Hotel was indeed "traditional" in the best sense of small town French inexpensive "Logis" style hotels.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Comfy beds / pillows / duvet, good food, beautiful garden, great location, easy parking (public but free and on street close to the hotel), pleasant staff

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Personal welcome on arrival which was appreciated. Lovely breakfast that was made to order and served by the owners which was really nice. Beautiful old building that is in a quiet and peaceful setting.
Cons: There was no hair-dryer available in the room which would be an improvement. The location is only bed and breakfast and there are not many restaurants close by so if you are without a car then getting an evening meal might be more tricky.

Cons: I had the single room which had a bathroom downstairs but I was aware that it would not be ensuite (double rooms are huge!). It is necessary to drive to restaurants.

Overview Reviews
Located in Troo, Chambre d'hôtes troglo Cave de l'Eperon is in a rural location, within a 10-minute drive of Parc de la Fosse and Chateau de Montoire sure le Loir.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Remarkable location in a spectacular setting
Cons: A little chilly —it’s a cave after all —but we soon settled in and slept well
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was everything that I hoped for and nicer. Very unusual and a nice experience.
Cons: Not disliked but be prepared to climb steps and hills to see the local history
4.3 Okay
Pros: The first impression. It was certainly a cave and at first glance appeared to be what we we expected. But that positivity disappeared very quickly.
Cons: Perhaps we didn't appreciate what a cave meant, but it had a very strong odour of damp - and that was with the door wide open. I went into the wardrobe for a second pillow and it was so damp I felt I could wring it out! I'm afraid we didn't stay - frankly, it seemed just too unhealthy. For what its worth, we did visit caves in Chinon - an art shop and a restaurant, and there was no such smell and no obvious damp, so there are ways to avoid these symptoms.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The quirkiness of the accommodation. It is very beautifully furnished and a very warm welcome by our hostess.
Cons: The humidity in the cave. This can be a problem if you have breathing difficulties. It was a bit difficult to find.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved staying in a cave!! Extremely charming and comfortable apt with 2 bedrooms, furnished beautifully. We loved the little town of Troo and this was the perfect place to explore the Loire Valley. Our host and breakfast was also wonderful. Lots of helpful tips and great conversation. Highly recommend!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice homemade breakfast in the main parlour. Hotel has only two rooms and the landlady lives just below. She was flexible as to prepare breakfast early for our departure. Communication through my bad French and her similar level of English was challenging but fun.
Cons: Finding the place by car was really difficult. The site should mention to take the Rue Haut from the Troo Mairie (townhall) side (the road is inaccessible from the other side). Even the lady at the restaurant in front of Rue Haut made a mistake and directed us to the other side of town from where the road is not passable. The address of La Cave is the name of the stairways on which it is situated and not the road to arrive by car.

Pros: Isabelle was very understanding when we turned up rather late. She provided us with a delicious dinner. The 300 year old house is fascinating and filled with the art work and carved furniture her husband has made.

Pros: My husband and I rank our stay at Chateau De La Barre as a highlight in our recent 23 day French vacation. We've stayed in Chateaux before and sadly too often these chateaux were in a neglected condition. Chateau De La Barre sparkles by comparison. It's well maintained, has beautifully appointed rooms yet retains the comfy feel of staying in a home. One feels like part of the family when staying there. Our hosts, the Count and Countess de Vanssay are warm engaging people. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. I appreciated the break from not having to think in French as our hosts speak fluent English and were happy to accommodate us. The grounds are vast and contain a huge garden that is loving tended. The profusion of flowers only adds to the beauty of the property. I appreciated the fresh vase of flowers in our room. An unexpected perk was the The Countess, Marnie, gave us an itinerary for sightseeing that she had mapped out for guests who wished to visit "The Little Loir Valley, Medieval France on the road of St. Jacques of Compostella." This made for a most delightful, day of sightseeing. My husband enjoyed chatting at the end of the day with Count, Guy about wine and visiting The Count's well stocked wine cellar. Chateau De La Barre is not to be missed if you are looking for Relais & Chateaux quality without the stuffiness. Thanks Guy and Marnie for a truly memorable stay.
Cons: a nite light in our bathroom.

Pros: The hosts provided a fantastic welcome and made me feel very comfortable during my stay. The chateau is immaculately decorated, with interesting rooms in several different styles. This is one of the nicest places I've stayed and I would strongly recommend it to anyone.
