It closes to Mariinsky Theatre and many restaurants surrounding (recommended Sadko, Ulitsa Glinki 2, a true Russian restaurant). Also closes to Nikolo-Bogoyavlenskiy Morskoy, a beautiful cathedral and a park next to it.
Never in my life had I met such a deceitful, deceiving, deceitful host. We booked 4 double rooms, 2 twin rooms and 1 quadruple room for 14 adults, 3 children from June 22-25. When we arrived around 16:30, the landlady told us we said to come at 22h00 but as we come early, only 8 beds for us. Only when we showed the booking in Russian stating that we would come from 16:00 to 17:00, she turned to persuade us to transfer half of the group to another hostel (more than 6km away). We disagreed and argued with the her (through translation a guy named Kolia) for 2 hours. It turned out at New Life Hostel 2 at that time there was only one 8-bed dorm available (3 beds were occupied). Since there was no other choice, she agreed the 1st night all of 17 people will sleep in 8-bed dorm, 2nd night to have 8-bed dorm and 4 double rooms, 3rd night to have 7 double rooms (at first 6 double rooms and 1 quadruple room). It took more than 2 hour to agree on room rates, we only proposed to calculate on previous booking price without any additional compensation for inconvenience when 17 people with luggage must sleep in room 8 bed. However, the greedy landlady kept asking for more money without giving any calculations. Too tired after more than 3 hours, we agreed with the plan, noted down on paper with her consent. It didn't end there, the 2nd night we only had 1 double room and 1 quadruple room. The landlady insisted that 2 beds were 1 double room and 1 quadruple room was 2 double rooms. Nowhere in this world this happens, maybe it is the way of calculating on Mars. The 3rd night we only received 2 more double rooms. There's nothing to say about New Life Hostel 2. Too many of our quarrels, from changing sheets, adding toilet paper, cutting off the internet ...
New Life hostel is comfortable, very clean and has all the necessary facilities. Its location is great, with Marinsky theatre, Griboyedov canal, the synagogue and Nikol'skiy cathedral right around the corner, and other main spots at walking distance. The atmosphere is quiet and the big windows make rooms feel bright and spacious. A very large shared kitchen (with fridge, cooking facilities, dishes, etc. at guests' disposal) and dining room allows guests to cook and comfortably have meals at the hostel. The hostel has access to a typical Saint Petersburg’s courtyard, this one with beautiful street art on the high walls. When we stayed there, all the other guests were Russian so staying at New life hostel also provided us with a great opportunity to meet and interact with locals. The hostel manager is a charming extremely helpful Russian lady that turned our stay at New life hostel into an unforgettable experience thanks to her kindness and hospitality. We would definitely stay here again if visiting Saint Petersburg in future.
The only redeemable thing of the hotel is its good location, you can go to the center walking without problem.
In general, I try to find the positive side of things. Unfortunately with this hotel we were not lucky at all. The person at the reception did not speak any English (which may happen) but she did not make any effort to understand what we were saying. On the other hand the room had a bad smell and very little ventilation (only a little window). Regarding the registration document, the hotel said it did not know that paper so they never gave it to us.
The host was very nice
The rooms were not very soundproof and you could hear noise in the corridor early morning.
