10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a beautiful hotel ideally located just off the Plaza Mayor. Villanueva is a very pretty town and well worth visiting. The hotel is family run and they are great hosts. The rooms are large and quiet. We had a view of the plaza and Cathedral from our little balcony. Breakfast was in the cafe around the corner and was typical Spanish with juice, tostadas and coffee - and cake if you wanted it. Parking in a public car park less than five minutes walk away on flat road.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Ramon and his wife were so warm and welcoming. A charming historical hotel with modern amenities. Large room and large comfortable bed. Perfect stop between Granada and Madrid.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The location so close to the Plaza. A large twin-bedded room with en suite and excellent facilities. Ramon & Ampola are the most charming hosts. Both of them gave us so much info. Loved our stay.
Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Such an interesting old building in the heart of this small town. The hosts were so helpful and pleasant and made our stay very pleasurable
9.5 Excellent
Pros: La morada is in a perfect location overseeing the plaza. We stayed there for just one night and everything was perfect and clean. The decoration is quite cozy and quaint. The owner, Amparo is really nice and went out of her way to keep our stay comfortable and explained everything about the area, and she gave us a couple of ideas for next day, which turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Also, we went with our golden retriever and she was more than welcome. The quality of sleep was great. Recommended 100%
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Large superior room, extremely comfortable and in a wonderful location just off the main square. Even when the streets were busy late in the evening the heavy window shutters kept out all noise! Very peaceful and lovely breakfast too! And our host was wonderful very nice to our dogs and helped point out the sights to see! She was very welcoming despite not knowing about our dogs (I had emailed hotel beforehand but they had not seen this email) Also we got a welcome drink! Wonderful hotel I would highly recommend!!!
Cons: We had pay a small surcharge for our two dogs €13 which was ok but our dogs did not make any mess. Sometimes I wish the room would be checked before we get charged as I'd understand the charge if they made a mess!

Hospedería Santa Elena - San Carlos del Valle - Bedroom
3
9.3 Excellent (154 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Hospedería Santa Elena in San Carlos del Valle, you'll be 10.8 mi (17.4 km) from Plaza de Espana and 11.3 mi (18.1 km) from Museo del Vino. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby and luggage storage.
6.8 Good
Cons: Our room was quoted as 60 euros/night but when we went to pay, we were told this was a mistake - that price was only for 1 person. Despite showing my booking.com reservation with 2 x people listed, management still insisted it was a mistake and we had to pay 103 euros. Restaurant was very expensive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything brilliant fort a very los price
Cons: Nothing!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The Hospederia de Santa Elena is like an old world oasis, hidden away in the old, columned central plaza of San Carlos. The room and open areas were ample, comfortable and tastefully decorated with really good quality paintings, a rarity in this age of kitsch.
Cons: Hidden away is a good description as there was no signposting whatsoever and so was difficult to find. It's not that the town has other attractions; it doesn't! So oasis is also a good description. If you're in company, it's very pleasant; if you're not, don't look for any stimulation in the neighborhood.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: All staff were so friendly....and helpful to us. Excellent breakfast, possibly the best we have had in Spain. Superb evening meal, although we find it easier to make our choices when a ‘set menu’ is available. We would certainly travel out of our way for such excellent cuisine. Excellent chef!!! Super historic building with a recent modern update. Our room was quiet, yet overlooked the Plaza Mayor.
Cons: The only pillow available was much too hard for me to get a good night’s sleep. We were led to believe, from the published menu on the front door and the website which we consulted, that a menu would be available in the restaurant for our evening meal. Unfortunately we could only choose from the full carte which was a language challenge and also quite expensive.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff. Have stayed here before. Great value for money
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The Hospedería was as good as a Parador but with much more reasonable prices. The evening meal was superb with a salad which was more than sufficient between the 2 of us and I enjoyed the biggest sepia I have ever had. The Guggenheim chocolate and raspberry desert, once again sufficient shared between 2 was delicious.
Cons: Our room was rather compact and we had to ask for a hair dryer.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great place. Very tidy and clean rooms. Best restaurant I had in Spain!
Cons: Staff did not speak one word of English but were very friendly
9.5 Excellent
Pros: the wonderful food
Cons: nothing
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location. Clean and comfortable accommodation. Very friendly staff.
Cons: The most expensive gins and tonics we had during five weeks' driving around all of Spain! Raciones not too good and quite pricey. Revuelto dry and the pulpo pretty tough. Not a problem though - eat and drink at Bar el Guerra, just up the road. Very good!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved our stay at Hotel Menano. On arrival we received a warm welcome and a map and the owner drew us a short walking tour of the town. Our room was spacious and the bathroom was huge. We had an excellent meal in the beautiful courtyard restaurant. The food was delicious especially the steak my husband ordered which we both agreed was the best steak we had ever eaten. We had a very comfortable night's sleep and breakfast was served in the courtyard. Great coffee. We parked our car in the secure parking across the road. Our only disappointment was that we stayed only 1 night. We would have gladly enjoyed another dinner in the very friendly restaurant. The hotel is situated in a beautiful town, definitely worth a visit.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, excellent menu del dia, clean comfortable and spacious room.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is an authentic Spanish hotel and is spotlessly clean. Rooms are large and comfortable. The Menu Del Día was great value.
Cons: Very little English spoken.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Our room was good, lovely courtyard to sit in outside.
Cons: When we arrived the hotel door was locked? We had to wait for someone to let us in. We knew the restaurant was closed on a Sunday, but so was the bar. We had to go to Reception every time we wanted a drink. I asked if we could have something simple to eat - bread, ham and cheese? He just said “No, finito!” He was rather curt and didn’t suggest places nearby that would be open. So we googled and eventually found somewhere. Really feel he could have been more pleasant and helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location, clean and parking good.
Cons: Shame that the restaurant closed on Sunday.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really lovely hotel .. the staff were friendly and extremely helpful

Pros: Really friendly staff. Could park my motorcycle inside the gates. On the morning when I was leaving the staff brought me a bottle of water as it were a hot day coming.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable room, Lady at the reception was kind, helpful and friendly!!
Cons: Bit remote from the city centre
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Myself, husband, and 2 young children had a short buy lovely stay. The building and decor are very interesting; my son's enjoyed looking at the large lion sculptures. The staff were very friendly and helpful; guiding to the main square to have some tapas for dinner, and providing us with bottled water to make up our baby's bottle. The room was spacious despite the extra bed and cot. The breakfast was tasty and very good value at 3.50 euro.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Unusual delightful property with an outdoor patio/bbq area. Very friendly welcome; aircon invaluable albeit a bit noisy. Surrounded by bodegas & about 15-min walk into town. Room spacious & well-appointed. Plenty of on-street free parking.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great design, good AC and amazing value for money. Very close to winery that I was planning to visit and free parking next to the hotel.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very good price
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hospedaria is in a converted winery and there are many statues and busts inside and in the courtyard to give it character. The receptionists (we met 3) were all Spanish-only speakers but we got along OK. The bed was comfortable and the shower hot. Valdepenas is not used to tourists. In fact there is not a great deal to see in town (except the church and square in the centre) and we chose it because it broke up our journey from the Costa Tropical to Bilbao.
Cons: There was nothing to dislike about the hospedaria. It is 10-15 minutes to walk into the centre to have dinner (there was a bodega closer which serves food but it was closed on the night we were there). We ate at the restaurant in the main square facing the church. It has a good atmosphere and the waiter was pleasant. The food was OK but nothing special. Really it is the town that disappointed us.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a fabulous gem of a place. A courtyard style building elaborate and luxurious inside. The staff are super friendly (they even gave me a bottle of wine) and the area is lovely to walk around with the main square full of restaurants only a few minutes (7) away. Comfy bed (two doubles in the room) and at a special rate of £26. Can't be beaten. Loved it.
Cons: Leaving.

Cons: See above
8.3 Excellent
Pros: location was good
Cons: towels a bit on grey side
7.5 Good
Pros: Parking is OK
Cons: Not working internet. The person at the reception desk said that if the hotel is full of guests who try to be on line internet is not working and asked me to wait for one hour so that she can fix it. It turned out to be fiction as on the following day internet was still terrible and could not send even simple emails without anything attached. If you travel on business avoid this hotel!!! Instead of investing in roperly designed internet connection hotel seems to be saving money on it.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location is great. Staff are super helpful.
Cons: The noise from the street - if you're on the first floor like us (2nd floor if you're from the USA). The 'spa' you need to book in advance and I would say that including it in the name is borderline misleading because of what it is.

7.0 Good
Pros: Really interesting old Castillion type. Only booked a single room, but got something more like an apartment- lounge and bathroom downstairs, bedroom with two singles upstairs.
Cons: Although, when booking, the site suggested “they spoke my language “ in reality their English was as bad as my Spanish- however, we got there in the end!
7.0 Good
Pros: Nice place to stay. It had a bar and restaurant, just what we needed after a whole day of driving. Comfortable bed.
Cons: Shower water ran cold after a minute or so.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good room, good supper, good breakfast, v quiet, loved it
Cons: A. It hard to find the way in ...
5.5 Okay
Pros: The appearance of the reception area was stunning.
Cons: Shower was inoperative. Breakfast was difficult because the staff spoke very little english. Toilets although private were downstairs. Floorboards very noisey.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: Nothing
6.8 Good
Pros: Excellent and intriguing building, all beautifully and tastefully done. Spacious apartment (upstairs bedroom), brilliant location in itself and for strolling around lovely little town. Lovely bar area for evening, and pleasant breakfast location. Generally staff friendly and helpful. Worth at least one visit!
Cons: Difficult to find first time round due to one way systems. Hotel amazing and room was lovely but not altogether perfect or practical: bedroom upstairs, bathroom down; tv in bedroom, not downstairs, poor lighting, partly as little natural light; and quite noisy and creaky floor boards and stairs. Breakfast was okay, but generally hotel not good value for money, especially for a small town and unfortunately found one of the main staff a bit brusque.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It's always nice to live the Castle experience, even on a business travel. Very quiet location, impressive space, confortable rooms with large bathroom. Restaurabt available with simple delicious proposal (if you like smoked salmos there is a peculiar menu based only on that, quite bizarre in Castilla la Mancha). I would like to remark the great efficiency at reception+information desk+bar and restaurant service by Manuel, the young staff guy who took care of everything during our stay.
Cons: Air conditioning in the room a bit noisy; Bath/shampoo gel in a pouch: quality should be improved at Castle level.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Quaint, Quirky, good free WiFi, good wine and cheese
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice hotel in an old castle. Spacey rooms over two floors. Good price value. Very nice restaurant, The general level of the food served for breakfast or in the cafeteria was also very good. We especially enjoyed the focus on high quality wines from all over Spain. Bargains offered by the glass (3 euros each). We really enjoyed the wine experience here! Only problem during the stay was that the air condition for the whole hotel was very noisy, so if you have problems sleeping with disturbing sounds around you, this might not be the place to visit during the heat waves in the summer (we had 38 degrees when visiting).
Cons: Noisy main air condition system.
7.5 Good
Pros: Wonderful historic building. Lovely duplex bedroom.
Cons: Restaurant was closed, though food was available at the bar - but not before 21.00! Very creaky floor and stairs in the bedrooms! Added to the charm of the place.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a modern new hotel that is central to the town. It was extremely clean and the staff were helpful. We reserved a car space at no extra cost. The bar is very popular with a small deli that sell gourmet cheeses, ham, and other products. We dined at the restaurant and the food was delicious. Having experienced the wonderful gourmet food we were looking forward to our breakfast only to be disappointed to be offered only coffee and a piece of toast with a jam sachet. I would recommend staying here as a one night stop over.
Cons: We would have liked more of a variety for breakfast.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: We booked this Parador last minute as we were struggling to find accommodation in the surrounding area on a Saturday night and this was about all that was left. I was pleasantly surprised by the place. Extremely convenient location just off the motorway. I did think that noise might be an issue but it wasn’t. Nice big rooms with balconies. The staff were all very pleasant & we had a good meal there & they even gave us some vouchers for some free drinks.
6.8 Good
Pros: The room was fine, as was the bathroom and balcony. Breakfast was quite good but the replenishment of dishes could have been quicker at times. The water in the pool was fantastic.
Cons: The outside spaces were very disappointing, except for the pool/pool area. They were rather limited and not up to the standard I would expect in a Parador. The Cafe Bar had four pretty basic tables and two umbrellas outside on a rather poor terrace area, with each table containing a notice that food/drink from the bar could not be served on the terrace!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Old World ambience close to major route E5 Madrid to Granada
Cons: Very busy with non resident Communion parties because it was May. A long walk into town but as it was Sunday when we arrived everything would be closed anyway. Been before so worth the walk which we needed after a long drive so cannot comment on car parking.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good value for money as far as Paradores go. Good location and especially friendly and helpful young staff on the reception desk.
Cons: I have to say the building is very close to a busy road. The doors and windows cut out noise but there does seem to be lots of vibration from heavy vehicles as they pass over expansion joints. There is a noise baffle but it ends too soon.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful gardens and pool. Very friendly and helpful reception staff, perfect location for a stop off on a long drive.
Cons: The room is a bit old and the restaurant quite expensive. Pool doesn’t open until 11:30, which is very late if you want to have a dip before you travel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location and excellent food
Cons: Blankets rather than duvets
7.5 Good
Cons: It was difficult to find via sat bag, rely on km junction number is better
7.0 Good
Pros: Super swimming pool with lifeguard.
Cons: Shower tiles had mould between them. No light meal in the bar/cafeteria. WiFi did not work in our room. The grounds appeared tired.
5.5 Okay
Pros: Noisy position Food in restaurant mediocre at best Restaurant staff miserable No tea and coffee facilities in room
Cons: Happier staff, better food, tea and coffee facilities in room
4.5 Okay
Pros: Not a lot. Bath towels were nice.
Cons: Poor food at dinner and breakfast both overpriced and expensive. Understaffed in breakfast room. Cold and oily food that should served hot. Toaster useless.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location of the hotel was ideal, just literally off the motorway, very easy to find! We were absolutely dazzled by the evening meal prepared and served by our host, all single-handedly. We had a wonderful four course meal prepared in front of our eyes, with a choice of starter, main course and desert. It was delicious, beautifully served and the host took time to answer our questions as well. Excellent.
Cons: We liked everything.
5.0 Okay

Pros: Outstanding value for money. Easy off the motorway. Staff are really helpful. Loads of free shaded parking. If there is a cleaner place to stay anywhere I would be surprised. Restaurant is fantastic, great Menu de Dia for E9.99. Bed really comfortable, a/c works well, bathroom fab. Is the best value for money place I stay in by a long way.
