A little shifty
The hotel is separated into sections. One part is behind the lobby, the other part is across the street. Seems like old LA style apartments turned into a hotel. Only positives was good TV, free breakfast, and free shuttle. It is centrally located to the Zoo and Sea World, however, lots of strip clubs in the area and shady/shifty looking characters on the nearby surrounding streets.
I felt concerned for my safety most of the time. Checked for bed bugs because I felt itchy. I’m currently in a hotel near home due to a fire. The one I’m in near my home is way better than that furniture was poor, room had an odor, saw mildew in bathroom, gnats in room, and outdated applicances.
Stink room, stained blanket, lights went off, can't control AC temp
Stinky and moldy odor throughout the room, stains on blanket, after I informed the lobby, the housekeeping people flipped the stained side under so I can't see the stains. Well, I saw it. The lights went out, mainenance man came with serious body odor couldn't fix the bathroom lights. I had to use the flashlight on my phone to use the bathroom for one night. The pillows were super small, very limited breakfast menus of scramble eggs, oatmeal, fruits (oranges & apples), toast, and cereal. The only positive thing I can say is the hotel is near all the places. Restaurants, shopping centers, highways, the zoo, Balboa park, Mission Bay. The location was perfect but it was definitely a super cheap hotel. If only they would replace the carpet or at least vacuum & spray some Febreeze or something. They need to replace all closet and drawers that have broken legs, clean & spray the room. I got a free upgrade because I complained about the stinky room, they gave me bigger room, but just as stinky.
Good location. Friendly staff. Easy access to all areas. Free shuttle to several attractions.
Breakfast is OK. Building is older. Wifi reception is not good.
Everything We Needed
I enjoyed the convenient location and the great customer service. It had everything we needed.
My only concern was the frequency in which the carpet and furniture are cleaned. The chair in our room was quite dirty.
You get what you pay for
The price. I didn’t want to spend a lot, since we didn’t plan to spend much time in the room anyways. The location was also convenient, close to everywhere we wanted to go. Staff was nice as well.
My biggest complaint was the beds. The mattresses are incredibly firm, and bumpy. I had a nice mattress topper I brought with, but even that didn’t give quite enough comfort. The lines were also stained, so that was unpleasant. If you take a shower in the morning, her won’t be hot water. Zero. It was hot at night, though. Our top door lock busted on us, causing us to be locked out of our room. Although, staff was quick to help. We got stuck in the elevator a couple of times, luckily for a short period of time. Take the stairs if possible. ;-) Overall, it was what I paid for I guess. I just feel like little changes could greatly improve the quality of the place.
Convenient location. Poorly maintain. Not too clean. Need renovation.
Almost everything. Too many things not working or need to be replaced.
Needs updating and better care to housekeeping
It was located close to the airport as well as shopping areas so I could get some items I forgot to pack. It was relatively quiet and reasonably clean.
The A/C either didn't work or was far too weak. It was actually warmer in the room than outside and because of the layout, I was uncomfortable leaving my window/door open as it looked out on the walkway where everyone could look into my room. The room seemed clean but every piece of furniture except the bed seemed to be broken or obviously repaired (different knobs on the dresser, thick plaster patching where there was some damage to the ceiling) Regarding housekeeping, I was given 2 shampoos and no conditioner or lotion, which was not what I was expecting. The second day, they took my second towel and the floor towel for the bathroom and did not replace them, so all I had was 2 washcloths and one bath towel. They also did not replenish my in-room coffee and I needed coffee before the breakfast service opened up, so I had to do without, which could be much more distressing to others than it was to me, but it was an inconvenience.
Needs a lot of maintenance
Proximity to Old Town and Mission Bay.
Our room was smelling moldy. It looks like the AC filter was not changed in a long time and it was leaking into the room. To the credit of the staff, they changed it when we pointed it out. In general, this property requires a lot of maintenance.
My flight got in late & the shuttle wasn't available. I wish it was specified that it wasn't a 24-hour shuttle in the description, because that was the reason I picked the hotel.
Rooms were clean, but there were smokers hanging around outside of the rooms. The elevator was in poor condition and vibrated wildly as it traveled. Didn't seem very safe.
Mostly great stay
I thought most of the staff was really helpful. They were kind enough to upgrade us, and we're very helpful with questions/details about San Diego.
The smell was horrendous. I thought the reviews were an over exaggeration, but they were spot on. It smelled like mold and wet towels in our room. I would assume the carpets need to be replaced. The scent seems to be embedded in it. Free breakfast was great, but it's exactly the same every day. Maybe switch it up every other day? Just a thought :)
