About Slanted Door

The Slanted Door offers diners a gourmet experience where the food on the plate looks as beautiful as the views of the Golden Gate Bridge from every table. Charles Phan, the executive chef, goes to the root of the dishes to represent the food authentically with a modern twist. The Slanted Door offers lunch and dinner menus with a variety of appetizers, palate cleansers and main dishes.rn

rnThe meals consist of organic elements including grass-fed beef and pasture-raised, cage-free chickens. Local seafood options include wild Gulf shrimp, spicy Monterey squid and seared Ahi tuna, or visitors can take advantage of the raw seafood bar. Those looking for a vegetarian or vegan menu will find plenty of options available. The Slanted Door offers a family-style menu and a wide selection of desserts with an extensive bar menu to wash it all down.rn

We sat outside and noticed a strong smell of urine? Likely from the homeless who sleep on the otherside at night. So skip eating outside or just sit along the inside row, not along the glass wall.

We used to work in S F yearly and during that time The Slanted Door was one of our two favorite restaurants in the city. We have just come back after a few year hiatus and TSD is better than ever. We shared three appetizers and two entrees, \nOur server asked a lot of questions about our food preferences and he was spot on on offering suggestions. TSD was packed so service slowed as the place got busier but it was OK as we were in no rush.\nGreat meal. And TSD is still one our two favorite dining locations in S F.

Deservedly popular! Memorable tastes, every plate camera-ready. Knowledgeable and helpful staff throughout, from front desk and bar through waiters and washroom attendants. This is sheer restaurant artistry, like a symphony orchestra at its height. Reserve as far in advance as possible and arrive early, if you care about choosing your table. Should your plans change, make it a point to cancel, even ulast-minute, and allow somebody else the treat you are forced to forgo. You will find a menu so tempting and proportions so generous, you will want to bring an appetite and seek advice, if you wish to avoid over-ordering.

I've been to Slanted Door about five or six times and it's always such a lovely experience--the views, the atmosphere, the food, the service. This time, I met friends for drinks and then we were seated facing the bridge, and our waiter could not have been nicer or more attentive.

With it beautiful bay view, Slanted Door was not all that it was made out to be. Although the peanut sauce on the appetizers was delicious, the rolls were dominated by rice rather than vegetables, pork, shrimp or chicken. Although the chicken in clay pot was good, it had a lot of sauce also requiring rice to enjoy. Visually, it was also not pleasant. All in all, the food was good but not outstanding as we had been led to believe. It was very touristy too.

We sat at the bar before dinner service and enjoyed the bartender's recommendations for food and drink. The moscow mule was incredibly refreshing without being cloyingly sweet. We ordered the green papaya salad, shrimp dumplings, and hamachi (which was one of the best hamachi dishes we've ever had). For dinner we had the cellophane noodles with crab and bok choy and mushrooms. Both were good, but not nearly as flavorful as the apps. Overall, we would recommend the restaurant. However, the bar stools are extremely uncomfortable!

We had a great table with a spectacular view and 5 out of the 7 dishes we ordered were excellent, the other two were very mediocre. What really negatively impacted our experience was the incredibly poor service we received. Our waiter rushed us through our meal and then disappeared when it was time to order dessert. The restaurant manager handled the situation incredibly well and she was extremely apologetic so that helped save the experience. Because of her professionalism I would try the Slanted Door again and I would recommend it to friends. I would also add that it is an EXTREMELY big space and therefore VERY loud but that is kind of part of the overall experience.

A dish comes to the table and it's devoured by four foodies -- my wife and I and our two grown kids. Repeat until everyone is stuffed. That's how it went on Saturday before we walked to the Giants game.\n\n The dishes themselves are a blur. I remember some exquisite pork belly. Three amazing veggie dishes toward the end. A wonderful Austrian lager -- AyingerJahrhundert -- a mouthful on several levels. \n\nGreat view of the bay from a booth (which we didn't ask for or slip anyone money to get :-) Attentive service. Stellar food in an informal setting . And the Giants won! \n\nLife is good.

The preparation and presentation , not to mention the taste and freshness is not to be surpassed in the city. The rolls, crepe, vegetables, and the crab with glass noodles are all amazing. You cannot order anything that's not fantastic. We ate outside this time so no noise but it is noisy due to the size of the restaurant. Service was good also due to the size. \nIt is a must when in San Francisco, I wish he would open on NYC!!

I was really looking forward to returning to this restaurant after many years (the old location!). I guess time truly does not stand still. Yes the view is beautiful but the meal was not. The waiter was not very friendly it seemed as if our foursome were a nuisance to him. We ordered the spring rolls and the pork spare ribs to start. The spareribs were atrocious overcooked and dry, my husband has done much better on any given football Sunday. The springs rolls were fresh, fine and fairly flavorless.\nFor dinner we ordered the Shaking Beef, Chicken Claypot and the Spicy Broccoli. The best dishes were the Claypot and the Broccoli both had good flavor and were tender and fresh. The beef on the other hand was again overcooked and dry, what has this chef got against beef?\n\nJust for fun and since we had our teenagers with us we ordered the Cotton Candy for dessert. Yum!

We had heard so many good things about this place but our visit left us wanting more (flavour). In all fairness the waiter explained the principle of the restaurant as family friendly food and this further enhanced our expectation. Unfortunately we found the food to be either bland and lacking some of the traditional ingredients (the spring rolls), or just overly greasy. We ended up cancelling the additional dishes ordered because we both felt full of grease. \n\nThe waiter was however exceptional; his knowledge of the menu and drinks list was impressive and he was very helpful when we wanted to cancel our remaining dishes. He was also very friendly without being overly familiar.\n\nThe location is great too but this is factored into the price!\n\nWe wouldnt try and stop people from coming here because there were loads of patrons whom looked to be having a great time. We just wouldn't recommend the slanted door to any friends whom we know to be fans of traditional Vietnamese food.

Food at the Slanted Door was as good as I had heard. The jicama and grapefruit salad was surprisingly savory with an undercurrent of heat. Ginger beef noodles were to die for - it was all I could do to not just push my face into the bowl and slurp up the sauce. While I am usually enthusiastic about Slanted Door, this time my guests and I were not. The food was nothing special - not the appetizer, the vegetables nor the entre. We had Slanted Door spring rolls, a cauliflower dish and a chicken saute. The service was alright but the server did not come back to check on us without our flagging him down for help. Considering past experiences and reputation, this time Slanted Door fell short. I will try it once more to see if it was just an off night.

An exciting menu and wonderful service make this restaurant an easy choice for a fun evening, a relaxed business dinner or pretty much anything. Our party of four ordered dishes from all corners of the menu and they were all prepared and presented wonderfully. Two things to know - the noise level is pretty high as the place is usually crowded and very busy and the dishes are served family style so four appetizers and four entrees with some dishes for the table....is a lot of food. Come hungry.

We tried to eat at the Slanted Door during our last visit to SF. But we had no reservations, so that was not possible. So, word of advice, reservations are a MUST! So this trip, I planned ahead. We were sat promptly at an outside table. What a wonderful view of the water, the bridge, etc. Amazing. We were greeted by the waiter, excellent first impressions. After we ordered and received our drinks, he spent time with us discussing items, and what and how many to get from different areas of the menu. We ordered, and the food began arriving very quickly! The Uni. Wow. Unlike anything I have ever had. An amazing combination of fresh flavors. Highly recommended. The ribs were great. Dumplings were good, but not anything special. Service degraded as lunch got into full swing. They get VERY busy. So if you are there during peak hours, order drinks early and often. It proved difficult to get the attention of our server during lunch. He never came back to check on us after the first few dishes arrived. However overall a great experience. Treat yourself and give it a try.

I have loved Slanted Door and been on many occasions, and all were memorable. However this is the first time in a few years and although the place is still going strong the food was not as subtle as I remembered it. We hadn't been to Slanted Door in a while and were happy that the quality remains the same. The cocktails were wonderful, drinks that go down so pleasantly, you just have to have another one. The shrimp spring rolls were fresh with multiple layers of flavor, the roast chicken and vermicelli noodles with slices of imperial rolls were likewise so satisfying, and the eggplant was quite tasty. This place is lively and busy with a lovely view of SF bay. We all left completely satisfied with no heavy 'oh I ate too much' feeling. It was just right.

We've been to Slanted Door several times since it first opened at the Ferry Building, but probably not for a few years. The place was packed by noon on a Tuesday this week, as usual, so I know the staff is really working hard. But everything lacked the finesse and quality I had expected. New serving utensils and replacement plates were practically thrown onto the table. All plates had tiny chips around the edges, we had to ask for more water, both hot for tea and cold for drinking. There was an extremely long wait between our first course buns (delicious) and our main courses. We ordered the whole fish which was plunked down and the waiter disappeared before we could ask if he would help de-bone it. We made a bit of a mess, and the pork shoulder with noodles contained a tiny handful of meat, sprinkled over a mass of noodles, sprouts and lettuce. The 3 imperial rolls which the waiter said came with that dish was actually one roll, cut into 3 small pieces. We saw that the table next to us had ordered the six imperial roll starter, which again was actually 2, cut up. For the prices we paid: $27 for the fish, which was just enough for 2, I would have liked better service. For example my fork was not replaced, but put onto the table sticky with sauce, between courses. Our total for the meal of one starter and two mains, without alcohol was almost $100. My memory of Slanted Door was that the service was impeccable and gracious, this time I really got the feeling of resentment from our servers. Maybe because we didn't order wine? And I was really shocked by the tiny portions for the prices. The food was all good, especially the fried buns, but the pork was ordinary and the fish sauce bland. It wasn't delicious enough for me to pay those prices and get this service again.

My first dining experience at the Slanted Door was four years ago. The experience was spectacular in all areas, food definitely fit for a foodie, prompt seating and the waiter sat down and discussed our likes and dislikes to come up with great food and wine choices. This time we went on a Tuesday with 8:15 pm reservations. I notified the desk of our complete group arrival at 7:45 pm. It was a complete zoo, many complaining customers still not seated long past their reservation time. We were finally seated at 9:00 pm. The two hostesses, in particular the one behind the desk, were disorganized and not terribly friendly. We had just flown in from the east coast and were so looking forward to a fabulous S.F. meal. The food was not great at all. We will not return to the Slanted Door as their are many places in S.F. to have fabulous meals and we won't waste our time going here. I am busy emailing all my friends who I have recommended it to so that they too will not waste their time.

The Slanted Door is always a fun place to eat when visiting San Francisco. It is a higly energetic, busy place (reservations are highly recommended). There is always a mixture of people: tourists to locals, young to old, fashionably dressed to casual jean-attire, families to romantic couples. The food is good (although nothing is outstanding) we enjoyed the imperial rolls and the nutty chicken (our vegan guest was happy with the veggie spring rolls and the eggplant). The drinks are great! If you are in the area of the ferry building this is a nice place to go, if you can get a reservation. The food is great fusion style and leaning towards Asian inspired but not too wild, something for everyone. The restaurant is nothing fancy but welcoming and bright. Service was good, not great, it's always busy.

Ate at Slanted Door on a Monday night. Made reservations 2 months in advance, the place was packed. We only waitited at the bar for 10 minutes, then were seated. My husband and I each ordered an appetizer, the hoisen ribs and the cerviche...both deicious. For entree we ordered the spicy squid and the chicken clay pot, and a side of spicy broccoli. All were very tasty, just keep in mind, family style...loads of food. We took the rest back to our hotel fridge! Great drink and wine list. Noise level is crazy loud though...view is wonderful.

Our server was excellent, very professional, capable. The food was OK, nothing special -- I've had better Vietnamese food at numerous small restaurants around the city at less than 1/3 of the price. And our leftovers, two different dishes, were put into a single to-go box: We had mush by the time we got home. A big disappointment. I won't be returning.

The food was all very good but nothing was outstanding. Have heard so many rave reviews of the years for the Slanted Door that we were very excited and perhaps had to high of expectations.\n \nThe service was borderline horrible. The waitress seemed irritated to need to explain their menu system and definitely overstated the size of the dishes which were overall small. I also am highly sensitive to spicy food and so asked for clarification on a few dishes to see if they could be made without the chili peppers. We were told no but that one of those dishes wouldn't be spicy at all. She didn't warn me that another dish we had ordered was incredibly spicy! Throughout the night she or any other server rarely came by meaning no one got drink refills. We were all a bit irritated by the time the check came. But since this was some of my family's first time in the city I decided to pick up the tab for everyone. Evidently while I was trying to figure out the tip, the waitress was hovering behind me trying to look over my shoulder to see her tip amount. \nI was appalled! I could not believe this all happened at this caliber of a restaurant! \nOur bill was easily around $400 and I felt like we would have gotten better service and possibly food at a diner. Ridiculous. \nWe will never return. And have told many friends to dine elsewhere when they have mentioned the Slanted Door. \nInstead we head down the embarcadero to Coqueta where the food and service are always outstanding!

The food at Slanted Door is innovative and interesting. Having been there many times however, I was disappointed that it was less than stellar this time. We had to ask for water multiple times and our waiter would occasionally disappear. The food items were good, however the gulf shrimp meat tasted a bit fishy. \n\nAdditionally, at our 7:30pm seating the restaurant seemed to lack a bit of its usual polish; the menus they gave us were wrinkled/stained, the restaurant seemed a little messier than usual, kids were in there playing on their gameboys (not something the restaurant can control, but definitely contributed to a different vibe.)

A friend suggested we try Slanted Door a few years ago. Being from Canada, I was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get to San Fran and try out this famed eatery. So, four years later on a one day trip o the Bay area, I made a reso for two (a month in advance and could only get a 9:30 reso on a Wednesday!!!)... \n \nWe experienced:\n- a stunning view by the waterfront\n- great ambience and subtle, but fitting interior decor\n- a waiter who was helpful, attentive but not intrusive. He guided our meal selection with honesty and promptly sent the sommelier to our table to discuss wine options based on what we had selected from the menu. \n-the sommelier was unassuming, friendly and approachable. He provided a few options based on our preferences and budget.\n- the food was sensational; the scallops were like WHOAH good, but everything was drool-worthy.\n-the bill was a little more than we usually would have paid, but it was worth every penny. \n- dessert was equally delicious and, even though we left with full tummies, we wanted more!\nWill DEFINITELY be back.

We had been recommended this by a friend on our trip to San Francisco and booked for 9.30pm (only available slot even though we booked at least a week in advance) and arrived in good time (in fact early) but were not seated until about 10pm. The greeting was very poor - the manager looked bemused when we arrived and just waived in the general direction of the bar and told to take a seat until we were called. It was as though she was doing us a great service! But there were no seats so we stood, with our children, for about 20 minutes until a seat at the bar area became came free. In this time, nobody approached us for a drink order or even brought a food menu so we could consider what food we may want to order. When we arrived at our table - following the waiter who was virtually running there - the service was reasonably friendly but 'fast-food' style. Menus were thrust at us with little explanation (luckily we are familiar with the cuisine) and we were not even offered any complimentary snacks whilst we perused the menu after such a long wait. I think we didn't actually start eating until close to 10.45 - by which time our youngest son had actually fallen asleep at the table and our oldest son was grumpy as he was starving. We didn't bother hanging around for any pudding... Nobody even thought to apologise for the terrible delay and poor service. Food was ok but the poor service is what sticks in our mind!

We arrived at 7:30 for our 9:00 reservations. They were able to seat us, in the side section w no water view. Waitress recommended a great German Pinot. We told her we were ordering everything family style and she was great at suggestions of when to bring food out so the progression would be nice. We ordered:\nSlanted door rolls- fresh and nice peanut sauce\nFrog legs - delicate and tender\npork belly- sweet and well prepared \nPapaya salad- well seasoned and balanced\nSoup shrimp crab coconut milk- delicate and nice\nShaking beef- beef was tough, nothing special, since she said this was a signature dish\nChicken clay pot- well flavored and delicious \nCellophane noodles-ok\nDessert\nConfection plate- cotton candy and nice caramel\nBitter sweet chocolate tart- good\nOverall the food was fresh and understated. I needed more spice half way through and she accommodated w bringing a nice chili paste. We were still hungry, so we ordered some rice.\nWe would good back, but I would tell them immediately that we like bolder favors and don't be afraid of spice. I think they are trying to accommodate the palate of my tourists, since it is such a popular restaurant. The view of the bridge is spectacular.

I had high expectations for this restaurant and was disappointed. The restaurant itself is modern with solid windows for walls, showing off the view of the Bay. We had reservations at 7:30pm. When we arrived at 7:20, we were told that the table would be ready in a few minutes, which is appropriate since we were early. However, it was 8pm before we were able to sit down at our table. The hostess was not friendly or helpful when we would inquire about the table availability during the wait. The service once at the table was adequate, but nothing special or what I expect for a restaurant like this. I was most disappointed with the food. We had a group of 5 people. We ordered 3 appetizers and 5 entrees to share. The majority of the food was boring. Nothing unique or different or special about any of it. For the price point of this restaurant, I expected much better. This is not somewhere I would return or recommend to a friend.

We were recommended to come here by a friend who said it's located in a little too touristy area but still worth to go to because of its modern Asian food. We researched the website and the menu sounded nice so we booked. When we arrived the restaurant was a little bit bigger than we expected and It was so crowded. But that doesn't off course meen its bad per se. \n\nThe staff at the door seemed very stressed. And it took a really long time to order at the bar while waiting for a table. The waitress was polite and did nothing wrong in our opinion but sadly the food was not at all what we expected. I wrote in the booking about my allergy to nuts but no one in the staff noted that or helped me ordering. Most things wit nuts was written in the menu tough. I had the duck for main and even tough the waitress asked how I wanted it cooked it was almost raw in one end and all grey in the other end. As if it's been on at tray for a long time. It was late and I didn't want to ask for a new one since the kitchen staff already started cleaning and I figured it would take a long time. Also the starters and the condiments was so overpriced.

The food was very good but not outstanding. The ahi tuna and carmelized shrimp were tasty, but the Slanted Door spring rolls were dry. The very short wine list was dominated by German selections. Prices for the smallish plates designed for sharing are high. Ambience is hard to control in the Ferry Building: The Slanted Door, located on a bay front corner, has high ceilings and lots of glass, making it noisy. We had to navigate through the ferry queue, tourists, and loiterers to reach the front door. On the plus side, the servers were helpful, attentive, and efficient. The restaurant and bar were packed when we left at 7:00 on a Friday.

We got lucky and scored a table in the main dining room. Our experience was everything we hoped for. We were fortunate enough to be returning to the bay area a month later and we jumped on Open Table to book a table to repeat the experience. We had to take a late reservation but it was every bit as enjoyable as our first meal. We give it our highest endorsement for food, drink, service & ambiance. It takes Vietnamese cuisine to a new level and it is obvious that they are serious about the experience they offer their patrons. Having dined here over the course of many years, I was underwhelmed with my latest experience. It appears SD is following in the footsteps of Le Colonial, a once great kitchen now limping along thanks to its past reputation, bereft of its past splendor. A name will carry you only so far, however! There is a problem if the most exciting dishes in the menu are your desserts, and the majority of the dishes fail to produce that 'oomph' effect. That's to say nothing of the terribly loud interior (our table was on a row of many tables very close to the kitchen despite there being water front availability and the restaurant's first-come first-serve policy for the same), and adding insult to injury, requesting to be reseated ended up with a careless refutation of 'that table is for bigger parties', resulting in me walking over to the same in exasperation and pointing out clearly that such was not the case. Don't treat your customers like idiots in San Francisco AND serve subpar food. Recipe for disaster.

Slanted Door was highly recommended to us by two different friends. We had an 8:45 reservation on a Thursday night and were seated within 10 minutes of that time which was great. Service started off great - friendly and helpful server who guided us on menu choices. Complimentary spring roll appetizer was delivered to our table which was wonderful.\n\nAs the evening went on our server visited us less and less frequently, and she checked out all together before our dinner plates were cleared and before we ordered dessert. A different server took over at our table, and our original server was seen sitting in a back dining room having her own dinner/break. She never came back to our table, the new server finished up our service. He was great, and we wished we had him for our entire dinner service! But we found it very odd that our server stopped working.\n\nOverall food flavors were fantastic, except the entree ribeye. It was the highest priced meat on the menu, yet had no flavor at all. Everything else we ate was so incredibly flavorful that we were very disappointed to have an expensive, bland piece of beef. The organic chicken claypot was by far the favorite with all at our table. Delicious!\n\nTry the vanilla bean beignet for dessert. Light and fluffy, just the right amount of sweetness - terrific!

For entrees, we liked the chicken clay pot and the cellophane noodles with crab. The shaking beef is okay, but not great. I have frequented the Slanted Doir since it was in the 'old neighborhood.' The food is unusual, tasty and always a surprise. I bring all of my out of town guests here. Reservations are needed in advance, but it's worth the wait. Th more you think about their food, the faster the time flys until it's your turn to eat!!!

Food is OK, but not as good or special as all the hypes on the website. Portion of the food is so small that we got hungry 2 hours after the lunch. We ordered papaya salad and two main dishes for 2 persons. I could count the pieces in our Califlower with Chinese bacon dish.\nThe ambiance is modern and clean. The best part is all the plain wood tables used throughout the restaurant. View of the bay is helpful, but in a busy place, we did not appreciate the view that much. I would rather go to the Ferry building marketplace , purchase a gourmet sandwich and sit by the bay, enjoy the sunshine.

I appreciate the accommodating staff. I had asked for an outdoor table due to my severe fragrance sensitivity. But my sister complained it was too cold. They seated us indoors and after about 2 minutes I had to leave due to another diner's perfume - I said we'd just have to endure the weather. They moved all our stuff outside. They have heat lamps so it was not that cold, although at times windy.\n\nHad a sherry cobbler. \nWe ordered: spring rolls, green papaya salad, shaking beef, lemon grass chicken, rice, asparagus.\n\nWas there an error on the salad? We did not see any papaya. It had carrot, celery, tofu, noodles. Spring rolls really good, lots of plump shrimp. Not sure why the beef is called shaking but it sure was good. Tender and cooked just right, also liked the onions. Dipping sauce was superfluous as dish had more than enough flavor. Chicken very good & spicy. Asparagus OK.\n\nFor dessert my sister had a hot Vietnamese coffee and I had spring trifle. Trifle was OK but not exceptional and the fruit didn't taste fresh picked. Probably too early in the season for really good cherries & apricots.\n\nDefinitely an indulgence as the bill for the two of us came to around $150 before tip, and it was my turn to treat!\n\nOne boo boo. We had some food left and asked them to wrap for us to take. I was carrying a cloth shopping bag, so I dropped into it the bag with the food. On BART coming home I pulled out my ballet programand it was damp. Thney put the peanut sauce in a little plastic container but DID NOT PUT THE LID ON!! I thought it had just come off but the carton was still tightly closed and there was no lid in it . The spring rolls soaked up most of the sauce, but by end of the afternoon it had seeped through the containers and paper bag; fortunately my shopping bag did not leak. \n\nSo, yes, I'll come back, after I replenish my bank account!

Went for our seventh wedding anniversary which also happened to fall on Morher's Day. We got there about 7:30 for an 8:00 res. Hostess saw our res and said to chk back closer to 8:00 for stats. Not a problem; went to bar, ordered drinks and while perusing menu, not more than 5 mins later, hostess came by and said our table was ready! Great food; server was great about giving us recommendation on how much food to order. Entire evening was great; service got a little slow towards the end because of all the parties still coming in for Mother's Day; and server neglected to bring back my change after I gave her two gift cards and told her how much I wanted the total to be! She did remedied the situation, but that also took a wait on our part.

The moment you walk in the door the staff greets you with a bad attitude. You cant check in when you get there and are expected to line up for a seat even with a reservation having been made. We arrived early to get a good seat and were not informed of the need to line up even with a reservation.\nWe were waiting three feet away from the check in desk. If you want to get a drink and a started ,you are out of luck. We were told that we could not eat anything where we were seated and if we did want food while we were waiting we would have to sit at the bar (we had two children with us ,so that sounded odd). Went to the bar and waited while it seemed the staff was not in the mood to take any orders for drinks. Finally spoke to a really rude bartender and I was ready to go somewhere after that experience. We stuck it out to see what all the Hype was about and when the food came realized we should have gone somewhere a little more friendly. The food was nothing special, except for desert which was excellent. Would not eat here ever again ,far better options around with less attitude from the staff.

I wouldn't recommend this place if you were looking for a quiet romantic dinner. The service could have been a little faster, but I wasn't antsy. We were there for a total of 2 hours. During the past 10 years, I've enjoyed lunch and dinner at Slanted Door a number of times. The food has been consistently good and wait service standard. This latest experience was a bit of a letdown. We arrived earlier than our 11:30 reservation and were quickly showed to our table. Although the restaurant was empty, we were placed right next to another couple dining, with about 6 inches in between of our respective tables. The four of us may as well have been sitting together. \n\nOur waitress was friendly and perfunctory, but once our order was placed and drinks delivered, we didn't see her again until we asked for the bill. Our food was delivered by the bus boy, who was a little too eager to clear, taking our plates before we were done licking the last bit of delicious sauce(I suppose I could have yelled at him to 'Drop that plate!'). \n\nI felt rushed, uncomfortable with the seating, and wonder why Slanted Door is sacrificing a quality dining experience and attentiveness to squeeze a few extra bucks out of an overcrowded dining room?

Snobby snobby service. Food was good and fresh, but nothing special. I would not go back simply due to the way we were treated. We were going to order individually, and if you choose to do so, you will be looked down upon, shamed, scolded, and treated like a drooling idiot who they would really rather not have to deal with. I was informed (with disdain) that the item I wanted to order would not be suitable for one person for lunch, and that we needed to order a vegetable, a protein and a carb or starch, and that we had to share. We decided to order the item I had wanted to share (along with other items of course--I think we would have been asked to leave had we not met the requisite food pyramid dictated to us by our holier-than-thou waiter), and discovered that the item was plenty of food, with enough diverse components, that it would have been very suitable for one person. So instead of doing what we really wanted to do, we were shamed into ordering differently than we had wanted to. What ever happened to the customer being right? Or at least respected?

The saving grace for this restaurant is the service, which we found to be outstanding in every way. Personable, unpretentious, helpful, courteous, humorous. The view from our vantage was also excellent. The food: Just OK, nothing more, nothing less. Significantly overpriced and some dish portions were ridiculously small. Appetizers: Ceviche was excellent; Yellowtail was tasty but extremely overpriced; Spring rolls were.... what you'd get at any neighborhood Viet place and not what one would expect for all of the hype. Main course: Prawns were very unremarkable; Snap peas were excellent but overpriced; Cellophane noodles were OK. Choice of wines is excellent and the dry Austrian we chose was excellent but slightly overpriced. Reservations: Are you serious? We had early reservations because everything at typical dining times had already been booked. When we arrived the line waiting to be seated was at least 25 deep. We let the host know that we had a reservation and were about 10 minutes early; when he showed us to the back of the line I said 'But we have reservations' and he said, yes, but it is first come first served. 'Why did we make reservations and why weren't we advised of this when we did?' He just gave me the smile and palms-up shrug. This, alone, will preclude us from ever returning. Sorry folks, just not worth the effort.

Unfortunately my experience at The Slanted Door wasn't anything near what I was expecting. My only expectations were 1) good food and 2) good service. The food is overpriced for the serving size and presentation. I would much rather have gone to my local Pho restaurant and paid $20 for the same meal compared to an astonishing $90. I ordered half spring rolls half crunchy rolls and they were nothing out of the ordinary. I also ordered the shaken beef and for the price, you don't get what you pay for. Yes the meat is quality and the ingredients are fresh but all I'm paying for is the name Slanted Door. Lastly, I ordered the crab cellophane noodles and there was barely any flavor and barely and crab... very disappointed. My BIGGEST complaint is the service I received. My waiter only came to introduce himself, take our orders, and bring the check. Never once came and asked how the food was or checked to see everything was brought out. I felt very neglected by our waiter. The men pouring water were more attentive than our waiter. \n\nI am very displeased to inform you that The Slanted Door had not met any of my simple expectations.

As far as Asian food goes, I'd say it's decent. The chicken had a lot of fat on it for a $22 dish, and the service was a bit slow. I think the hype of the restaurant in guide books is what draws the crowds, that and it's great location. I'd say it's a good spot for work lunches and tourists but you can certainly find better Asian food in a city like SF.

Last time we went to the Slanted Door was Jan 98 in the Mission District. It was as popular but for some reason we walked in on a Sat lunch and got a table. It was delicious.\nSo 17 years later.....we are trying to get a reservation for our trip to SanFrancisco. We tried and tried and miraculously a spot opened up the day before we were to leave. It was very good but I don't think the sea bass was on the menu any longer. I liked the chicken in a clay pot though. And the friends and family we shared with are priceless. Slanted Door has such a reputation, maybe it's difficult to live up to it? \nWe loved the cerviche and plaintain chips, not overdressed or too acidic, and the SD spring rolls were excellent, with a peanut sauce that wasn't too overwhelming and a perfect consistancy. My partner had the cellophane noodles with Dungeness crab which were delicious. I ordered the lamb rack with tamarind sauce medium rare and we both were disappointed.. the tamarind sauce was like a jam and although flavorful, somehow didn't work with the lamb, and we both felt the lamb needed a tinge of salt which of course was not on the table. The restaurant is beautifully situated in the Ferry Building, with great views of the Bay, Bay Bridge, and Ferries arriving and leaving. The food was excellent, including the spring rolls, rice noodles, civiche, and whole fish perfectly prepared. However the feel, if you looked away from the water, was of a giant, noisy, overcrowded cafeteria. The staff was professional and unbelievably efficient, almost like a well orchestrated assembly line, the overall effect being somewhat impersonal. We were never overtly rushed, but preparation and clearing of plates was so fast that the whole dining experience lasted 75-80 minutes. . It just seems like a normal restaurant. The service, however, was wonderful. Very attentive, engaging and friendly. \n\nGood place for a meal but nothing extraordinary.

We always go to the Slanted Door whenever we visit SF because it is absolutely delicious and the setting is so unbeatable. You can stroll through the SF ferry market, and make your way over to the Slanted Door, where your taste buds will be revved up by amazing dishes. We got the papaya salad, shaking beef, a fish dish (can't remember the name) and the cellophane noodles with crab. The portions are generous, and we had some of the noodles leftover, which I took back to the hotel and ate for breakfast :)

I have been here three times with reservations and every time I have waited at least 30 minutes for a table. I have heard this is typical for this restaurant. When waiting on the table my group of 3 tried to get a seat at the bar to grab a drink and were denied by a fairly rude bar tender because the bar seats were for reservations as well. I thought the bar tenders were a bit dismissive overall. Our waitress, however, provided great service and the food was awesome.

I rarely order meat in a restaurant because I don't know where it came from, or how it was raised. I appreciate that the Slanted Door sources its meat from local farms. They also offer very interesting vegetable dishes.

Finally found this place in back of the Ferry Building but we walked around inside the Ferry Building food markets and had a glass of wine before our 5:30 reservation. It was a little chaotic at 5:30 since that was when the restaurant opened for dinner and all the diners were there at once. Their bar was open earlier so you can have a drink there and make known you have a reservation for dinner. The menu is Vietnamese small dishes and all is fantastic. We loved everything! And the view was exceptional. It was one of the last nights the Bay Bridge was lit and also it was a full moon. We watched the moon rise over the bridge and it was a great end to our San Francisco trip. The restaurant is very loud and hectic but service was team style and fast and efficient.

This is more upscale 'Asian fusion' than echt-Vietnamese, but the food we had was excellent. Service was attentive too; although we arrived at the restaurant a half-hour before our reservation time, and although the place was packed, we were seated immediately and graciously. The view of the Bay Bridge LED light show added to the fun, of course. The biggest arguable drawback was the high noise level, but we've experienced worse in that regard. Parking was a challenge, since the promised valet parking was nowhere to be found when we arrived, but the oversight may have been our fault. Happily, we found a spot right on The Embarcadero not far from the Ferry Building, but such luck is never a sure thing any more.

This is our 5th visit to The Slanted Door and each time, the food is less exciting and the prices are higher. It's just not worth the price. We liked the crispy rolls and fresh rolls, the green papaya salad and the shrimp. The short ribs were very bland as was the cauliflower dish. The claypot chicken arrived 20 minutes after all of the other food and so we forced ourselves to take a few bites and it was dried out, with wilted cilantro (as if it'd been sitting under the heat lamp for that 20 minutes). The wait staff took our food and drink order and then didn't come back to the table until they presented the dessert menu and we'd have liked another glass of wine to have with our entrees. There were two of us for an early lunch on a weekday. The service at the beginning was very good & quick. However, the main food dishes we ordered and shared were relatively scant for the price, except for the plentiful coffee in a small elegant pot. The squid was one of the main dishes and the cellophane noodles with crab was the other main dish. We had a third dish, contents of which I can't remember right now but probably was a vegetable entree. Each dish was mildly tasty but missed the zing that was possible. The most disappointing dish for me was the noodles with crab. The high potential for flavor was absent, the amount of crab was quite disappointing, the noodles did not seem freshly cooked, and the temperature of the dish right after it was served was somewhat cool instead of warm-to-hot. Perhaps that was intentional, but I prefer hot food, even if the food is seafood.\nOverall however, even though the restaurant was busy from the time they opened on a weekday, the service was good. However, I was somewhat disappointed with the meal considering the prices/cost, the solid reputation of the restaurant, and the amount of time the Slanted Door has been in business with a strong following of customers.\nWould I return? Yes, with high expectations once again-----and with hope that I would be both pleasantly surprised and relieved that my experience in January 2015 will not be replicated and was a fluke in an otherwise extraordinary venue serving high-quality and well-prepared seafood.\nThank you for the chance to review and provide one person's perspective on The Slanted Door in San Francisco.

My friends and I were celebrating a couple of birthdays. We are all food professionals very familiar with Asian cuisine and make Vietnamese food ourselves. We had the added enjoyed experience of taking the ferry from Larkspur Landing and landing right at the Ferry Building just before opening time. There was a queue already forming before 11am and the doors were opened several minutes later...\nWe were shown to a very comfortable semi-circular booth which had a lovely view. \nWe started with some fun and exotic cocktails and ordered several really delicious and familiar dishes which exceeded our expectations. We asked for a Nuoc Mam or Nuoc Leo condiment and were told that we could not have them... We'll bring our own next time! Taste is subjective and we wanted some more heat with these dishes. Please try harder to cater to your guests desires...However gauche!\nThe restaurant did add a nice touch by presenting a wand of peppermint cotton candy with a birthday candle on top for the birthday guests. The food tasted good. The problem we had with this place is that it seemed really overpriced for food that should be a fifth of the price. Once again, flavors of the food were good, ambience was beautiful & service was great. The only thing as far as flavor that i didnt like was the dessert. Some kinda orange marmalade pudding and the cotton candy was an overkill.

Not sure why this place is so busy. We asked for recommendations from the server, and our food was horrible. Dry, jerky-like pork with zero seasoning. 1-dimensional clay-pot chicken. And nearly inedible spare ribs (tough and overcooked). They also didn't get our drinks right. Fail.

Slanted Door is a large restaurant with a huge bar, very busy and buzzing with excitement. And this is on a Tuesday night - weekends must be wild! We got seated on time and had a view of the restaurant and the Bay Bridge/waterfront. The service was attentive and friendly and not intrusive. Food was great! Drinks were interesting and tasty. There were couples, families, large groups out for the holidays. They handled it all well. We'll definitely go back.

My daughter had enjoyed her first visit to the Slanted Door so much that we made 2:30 reservations for lunch to celebrate her special day. This was in our reservation but, no acknowledgement made. The waitress was very distracted…we asked to order appetizers first, then we would order our main dish…..'Our kitchen closes at 3:00 so, you need to order now or you might not be able to order anything else'. Hmm…that would have been good information when I made the reservation. She forgot our chicken clay pot dish and took over for another waiter who was serving a private room so disappeared for quite a while. Not in a rush to go back. My daughter should have had a birthday acknowledged without us having to say something at the table in front of her. Then..when 3:00 came, the staff sat down with extremely bad manners in a booth next to us. Making it clear it was time to go.

We went here to celebrate our son's birthday. It was so noisy we could barely hear the person across the table, and it was impossible to hear anyone not sitting very close by. Service was slow, our waitress insisted we weren't ordering enough food, and we ended up with too much. When we asked them to box up the leftovers they just cleared the table and didn't bring anything back. We gave up and left. We make a point of going to the Slanted Door when visiting San Francisco: the food and setting are superb! We always order too much (2 appetizers and 2 entrees for 2 people is more food than we can eat) -- but we want to try so many things! The vegetarian spring rolls were great -- made especially good by the unique spicy peanut sauce; the Pho had very good quality meat and noodles, with a great tasting base broth; the lamb (stir fried with red onions) was yummy as always (not overcooked, and we'd love to know what other sauce components there were?); and the chicken claypot with its ginger sauce is always worth ordering (forget about the maxim not to order chicken in a restaurant!). We will be there again on our next visit...

Scallops were well cooked but not as fresh as could have been. \nWorst part was the tap water - need better filters! But of course that's so we'd have to have the wines and cocktails. We visited San Fran during Thanksgiving and were lucky to get into The Slanted Door just as they opened on Sunday am. The restaurant is located in the Ferry Building #3 and we would recommend getting a taxi or other public transportation (no parking!). We made a reservation and we were glad we did as we saw the very long line to get into the restaurant (in the rain). We were seated immediately and our server greeted us promptly. This is a family style service and the tables (except booths) are very closely sat. We ordered cocktails from the bar and the Pork spare ribs for an app. The ribs were excellent!! The sauce and cooking temp were perfect with a slight crispiness. Our entree's were; Cellophane noodles with crab, Shaking beef and we ordered Spicy Broccoli. Everything was perfect. We could not finish our meal and because the tables are so close together we were able to spy on our neighbors food as well; they had some kind of noodle soup which looked fabulous and the one thing I wish I would have ordered, the Spring Roll. Our server talked us into sharing the small (vegan!...we were doubtful) gelato, salted caramel and coconut..WOW! So fabulous that we scraped the bottom with our spoons. All in all 4.5 out of 5. Slanted Door is very popular, and as a result, very loud. It was also difficult to get a reservation even on the Wednesday evening when we dined. As a group of six, we found the menu interesting and it offered choices to suit almost every person in our party. Highlights were the pork belly, the tuna carpaccio, the clay pot chicken, and the shaking beef. But the winner was pork loin entrée.\n\nMy only complaint, really, was that the quality of service dropped off near the end. After our entrees were cleared, we waited for at least ten minutes for an acknowledgement from our server. Someone else ended up bringing us dessert menus. The restaurant was closing down for the evening, so I can understand a little more relaxed approach, but it was inconsistent with the excellent service we received earlier in the evening.\n\nOverall, we had an enjoyable time and many of the dishes were quite excellent. If you must go to The Slanted Door, unless you enjoy the shrieking of others, and the need to scream to your dinner mates, Friday is a particularly poor choice. I've been there twice in recent months: the first time I noticed how good the food was, and the second time I noticed how hoarse I was 20 minutes into the experience. I speculate that where one is seated in the room, along with when in the week and evening, can vary the level of the thunderous roar. If you are over 27, I highly recommend going for lunch instead of dinner, if at all possible, to minimize the quantity of 'energetic' diners.\n\nI've pondered for a while why it is that restaurants have gotten so noisy in recent years. I KNOW it is on purpose: architectural details of new restaurants built from the ground up (including The Slanted Door's current location) are designed to amplify the noise. The only explanation I've come up with is to drive out the older diners, with their diminished hearing and patience; a younger crowd is a hipper crowd. The plan has worked perfectly: I am 63 and I won't be returning to The Slanted Door.\n\nAs it was a special occasion, we went for the $45 steak. That tough little thing is wildly overpriced, out of scale with the rest of the menu.

The Slanted Door is probably my favorite restaurant in the city. It's located in the historical Ferry Bldg with scenic views of the Bay and Bay Bridge and their food is impeccable. I've eaten here at least 15 times over the last few years and have never, ever had a bad meal. The carmelized prawns are too die for and the vegetables are always cooked to perfection. Not too crunchy and not mushy. The spinach and brussels sprouts are devine. I don't eat beef or lamb, but my friends said their dishes were incredibly delicious. They have a good cocktail list (try the Moscow Mule) and a comprehensive wine list. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
