About Wayfare Tavern

Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

I hadn't been to Wayfare Tavern for a few years and unfortunately was disappointed with the current experience. I had remembered the food as excellent, but, on this visit, it was merely ok. The noise level in the restaurant was unmanageable. The hostess was very gracious and relocated us upstairs which was initially quieter, but the stereo system would intermittently blast loud music. Odd. I think this would be a great place to go for a drink (provided you don't have much to say to your companions as you won't be able to hear them) as the decor is lovely and the staff is welcoming but skip eating dinner. Shoot! I wanted to love it!

I have been to the Wayfare Tavern another time, but it had been some time between visits. I remembered something about the fried chicken and it did not disappoint. I have an odd allergy to allium. Two other dishs my date and I ordered to share showed up full of chives. My issue with this is that it was such an integral part of the dish -- it seemed to be more than a mere garnish -- it should be listed as in ingredient on the menu. That said, I had mentioned to the server about this allergy, and it was delivered anyhow. Fortunately, they swiftly took it away and delivered another order of the side dish. Rather than send back the other main course, he ate that, and I finished off the yummy fried chicken.\n\nThe server was attentive and heard me explain the situation. I even joked about it. But, seeing plates of food show up with the very thing you're allergic to is no laughing matter.\n\nStill, I was able to thoroughly enjoy the food I did eat. I also love sitting at the counter overlooking the kitchen and watching them prep all of the dishes. If only I'd have known which dishes were specifically mine, I'd have yelled out, 'hold the allium!'\n\nI'd still go back again. But, next time, I'll be even more explicit about this. For what it's worth, I hope the restaurant management reads this review and takes to heart this issue. Surely, they want their guests to have a top notch experience. It shows that they care about that in every other way.

Our overall dining experience was fine, but they failed to secure a high chair for us after requesting one in advance. This made our lunch much more challenging. We also witnessed a chef using a cell phone in the food prep area, which was very unappetizing. The burger was very good and overall it is a very nice place to eat.

We were there for a get together with family that lives out of town and we loved it! We had the fried chicken and the burger. Drinks were very good and the desert was to die for. We had the chocolate cream pie and the donuts. The service was excellent and the ambiance is awesome. The only thing that was a bit annoying was the level of noise near the bar. They have a upstairs dining room that may be more quiet though. For 50$ per person you can have an extravagant, great meal.

This was my fourth visit to Wayfare Tavern. The food and service are consistently very good. I highly recommend requesting a table upstairs. As I discovered on my most recent visit, during busy times (happy hourish) the bar crowd, noise level and relatively small space downstairs can make the dining experience much less comfortable and enjoyable.

I had a business dinner reservation hosting two CEO's of Fortune Companies. One is a regular patron at Wayfare Tavern, he comes weekly. One of our party arrived 10 minutes late due to traffic, 2 arrived early. The hostess refused to seat us, gave away our table, and we didn't get seated until 1 HOUR Later. \n\nHorrible way to host VIP customers. Most wouldn't even take the time to share this feedback or review. They just won't return and give restaurant their business again. \n\nYour hostess is the front face of your restaurant. When she mismanaged and misrepresented so poorly to the point of causing your restaurant serious loss of VIP patrons, that's a tremendous problem that management should be aware of. I'm sure we are not the only customers that has been affected. \n\nThat hostess was all about control, her control, and not at all about service to the customers and taking care of customers.

Splurged for my boyfriend's 50th birthday, but the service we received was very sub-par, compared to my previous memory of going to Wayfare. The waiter was good-looking and that was pretty much it: he offered no insights on the menu, he did not know how to properly serve the wine (that we brought) literally just filling both of our glasses up without letting us 'taste.' He 'threw' the Wayfare birthday card in front of my boyfriend on our table, and the period of time that we waited to have our table cleared after dinner was noticed by another (obviously more experienced) waiter who came over to apologize and to save the day. Both tables on either side of us also 'complained' to the head waiter about the slow service so it wasn't just us being picky. \n\nThis meal was a waste of $200 on a special night and I'll never go back here for a meal; only for drinks since the room is still so pretty & cozy.

My husband and I have been here a few times and we're very disappointed this time. We tried to move our reservation back by 15 minutes and they said that's fine but we'd only be allowed at the table for an hour and a half. I thought that was rude as well as the hostess' tone of voice. \n\nThen when we got there they had moved our reservation back on their computer an additional 15 minutes so we had to wait for our table. When seated we ordered the devil eggs which were good. Then the popovers cake and they were a little crunchy. My kids had their mac n cheese and it was fine. My husband and I both had the Fried Chicken. It was more greasy and flavorless than anything. We have ordered it in the past and we were not impressed this night. We also ordered a $150 bottle of wine. The wine was brought to us but not the correct vintage. We asked for the vintage on the menu and the waiter left for awhile. We saw him talking to possibly the sommelier or Manager and after a brief discussion they found the wine with the correct vintage. The sommelier came to our table, no apology, and poured our wine. \n\nWe ordered the chocolate pie which was good but nothing fabulous. Overall, we were highly disappointed with the service as well as the food. My husband frequents the restaurant often with clients and after this evening doesn't plan to return any time soon.

This restaurant is one of my new favorites. From the food to the service to the decor, everything was great. Portions are huge and even though the food comes out quickly, you can tell it's still prepared fresh. The fried chicken is amazing and you practically get a whole chicken. The sides are large enough to share with at least one other person, and two sides can easily make a meal. The gnocchi are a tad on the sweet side but they are extremely light and fluffy. The donuts for dessert are divine!

My second visit to Wayfare Tavern but first in quite some time. The fried chicken lived up to the FW 'best in Country' endorsement, but I especially loved the brussel sprouts and panzanella salad. Tight quarters and loud noise level made meaningful conversation challenging at this friendly business lunch. Service was perfunctury with nothing to complain about but nothing to remark over either. Price and value are as expected for SF FiDi Celebrity Chef a-la-carte restaurant.

Stopped in before flying home for their famous (Top 10 in the country) Fried Chicken. It was every bit as good as expected and along with their roasted curry cauliflower and pear and goat cheese crostini and squash soup, we had a spectacular brunch. The pinot noir grape juice (had to take a break from our wine weekend!) was outstanding. Service and ambience stellar. A real find and very conveniently located.

Experience was great overall, very good food but service was slow and waiter wasn't very attentive. Memorable comfort food from the popover they gave us to the chocolate cream pie at the end, and everything in between. Not to be missed: fried chicken and chocolate cream pie. Honorable mentions: burrata and pears on country bread and roasted Brussels sprouts. Also had the black truffle gnocchi which wasn't outstanding, but still fine. Look forward to a return visit very soon!

Met our son and his girlfriend there for dinner. Had read about the chicken and deviled eggs. While the chicken was very tender it lacked flavor, same with the deviled eggs. Pork dish was prepared very well and was delicious. The chocolate dessert, while delicious was very difficult to cut through the hardened chocolate layer at the bottom.

We had lunch on Sunday and were very pleased with the Wayfare Tavern . Service was a little slow but the food was excellent and the ambience is very old-school San Francisco. The good...Staff were lovely and efficient... The atmosphere was great and the popovers were amazing.... The ok... The food was way over sold. They claim to have the best fried chicken, but this city has at least five other places that could beat them any day. We really enjoyed the cauliflower and the burrata...The bad... They didn't report that we checked in on open table and because we were ten minutes late, they gave us a time limit for how long we could dine... I would still recommend it based on the staff and atmosphere...

We made a reservation to eat here at 8 PM on our first night in the city after a flight from Vermont. This was our third or fourth visit to the restaurant. As usual it was full of diners. We were seated upstairs. After a lengthy wait our server showed up to take drink orders. Another lengthy wait for drinks to arrive. The food was fine, as we have come to expect: fried chicken, roasted cauliflower with fried capers, arugula and beet salad. The noise level was very high. Conversations across the table were interspersed with 'What? Say that again.' at our table and the tables at each side. Bottom line: Good food, service seemed overwhelmed much of the time by the full house, too noisy to have anything but a shouted conversation. Next time we will sit at the bar, which has a full menu. That way we can talk and also get the attention of the bartender when our glasses are empty.

It's cozy, charming and old-world Tavern style. We were there Sat afternoon, so it was fairly quiet, but as it's the heart of financial district, I could imagine it very busy for business dinners and cocktail hour. \nOur waiter was a seasoned professional; he built a good rapport with us and seemed to know just when to come by and when to leave us alone. Food was varied. And we all loved our choices. I'm a vegetarian and there was plenty for me.

While Wayfare Tavern is still my favorite restaurant in SF, there's some room for improvement. I had a business dinner there on 2/1, the service was friendly and efficient and very accommodating when we were running late and they kept our table open. As always, the cocktails (cucumber mules) were perfect. My companion had the fried chicken and cauliflower side and said both were as good as before. I had the Tavern Burger and roasted mushroom sides. For the second time in a row, the burger that was ordered medium rare was well done. This is a really simple thing that restaurants have to get right. Since I didn't want to delay our meal, I didn't send it back, but probably should have. Overall, this is a gem, there's a reason they're packed every night, but I hope that they'll keep an eye on small things that are easy to fix.

I have dined here a number of times. This review is for my visit there on 1/28/2017.\n\nOur waiter was not attentive to our table at all. The worst service I have ever experienced here. He was busy chatting for a long time with two other tables. Only time we saw him was when he took our orders and until he finally came by almost half way through our entrees. Our empty wine glasses were not filled for a long time even he was passing by and there were other waiters/busboys passing by our table many times. We poured by ourselves. Also, a busboy kept on coming by just trying to take our plates away when we were not done. We felt being rushed constantly. Especially at fine dining restaurants like this place, we have never experienced that the waiter picked the signed check from the table while we were still sitting at the table. \n\nBesides a steak tartare, which was delicious as always, unfortunately we were not thrilled with the rest of our foods. We felt there were too much use of butter in all of 3 dishes, Pork, Brussels sprouts and mushrooms. Nothing against butter but too much is too overwhelming. We didn't enjoy them. I had a similar roasted Brussels sprouts here about a year ago, it was so delicious but this time, it was not good at all. \n\nWe left here feeling very disappointed despite we came here with such an excitement.

A server kept bumping into our table. When we talked to him about the annoyance, server didn't apologize. He told us that he we were next to the service station and that he had to have access to the water. He asked us to move our table closer to the next table. Not sure if the fact we were the only table of color and the restaurant was filled with Caucasians. I hope not.

I'm hoping that I'll change my review the next time I go. I do expect there to be a next time because I went during SF Restaurant Week (but ordered off the a-la-carte menu) and it was just too hectic. \n\nTheir iconic fried chicken, which friends have raved about, was DRY! Really dry! I was looking forward to a good meal but was majorly disappointed not only by the food but also by the wait. We had reservations at 7:30PM, arrived at 7:38PM, and had to wait until 8PM to be seated. When all 4 of us arrived, the hostess claimed someone was 'cleaning our table' but it took them all of 20+ minutes to 'clean our table' and, in the meantime, a couple of parties of 4 were seated before us. \n\nI was pretty angry and when the host sensed my displeasure, he had our waiter comp us two appetizers, which was very very generous of him. When our food arrived, the lobster was a bit overcooked (but still delicious), the burger mediocre, and the fried chicken disappointing. The cocktails were amazing and my buzz mitigated my anger & disappointment. Maybe it's the Cucumber Mule speaking or the optimist in me but I am willing to try Wayfare again on a day that's not SF Restaurant Week, hoping the quality of the food will be much better.

The first thing that drew me to booking the Wayfare Tavern was the comfort food. I discovered that they offered pop-overs. The only place I knew of that offered pop-overs was the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus. They were yummy and we even got second helpings too. As the menu raved about the Organic Fried Chicken, my friend and I thought to give it a try. It was delicious! And the meat literally fell off the bone! There was even enough to bring home and share with our family. My friend and I shared the chocolate cream pie and it was the best dessert ever: cake, salted caramel, and pudding. We were literally the first customers of the day at 11AM on a weekday, which lasted our entire meal, so it was nice and quiet. I imagine that's more often not the case, we just got lucky.\n\nThe complimentary popover was one of the best things we ate. We ordered the Organic Fried Chicken, and the Burrata & Pears on country bread. The fried chicken was good, but we wanted more crunch on the breading (instead it was light and delicate).\n\nI really enjoyed the burrata and pears. For a lighter yet satisfying and delicious lunch option, get that. Lightly toasted and buttered bread with the sweet pears and creamy burrata was excellent.\n\nService was outstanding. There wasn't anyone else to serve, but nonetheless our waiter was very patient while I took a while to decide on my order and helpful in explaining details of the dishes.\n\nRecommend coming for business lunch or dinners.

We had a lovely early dinner (4pm reservation). The food was delicious and for a very rainy winter afternoon, the fireplace was so cozy and they have 5 or 6 booths, just so cozy. \n\nThere was no one in the dining room. I had asked if we could sit in a booth. I was told NO, that there were reservations for the booths. When we departed at 6pm, my guest and I commented, that no one was seated in either one of the two booths closest to us. Not cool.

The food isn't better than mediocre, the wait staff are just okay, the restaurant was cold on a cold day (like they were trying to conserve heat) and the prices are steep. The best thing about this place for me was the convenience of being near my office. In a city full of great places to eat, this is a definite skip.

Our waiter was terrible. He didn't have any recommendations regarding apps when asked and didn't mention that the three we ordered all came with bread. For the price the food should have been better and the service spot on. \n\nIt was cute!

The food was very disappointing. Flavorless steak that tasted like it may have been frozen. The food came out so quickly that we were barely halfway through our cocktails when our entrees arrived. We were excited to try the Wayfare Tavern having seen many great reviews especially of the fried chicken. Everyone was looking forward to the 'upscale' comfort food. We knew going in that it was going to be pricey but who wouldn't pay $25 for the best fried chicken in America? We loved the ambiance and decor both in the bar and the upstairs dining room but were unfortunately disappointed with the food. The popovers are definitely a taste sensation but the fried chicken (ordered by 2 people in our party) had less than crispy and not very flavorful crust and the breast meat was very dry. For a place that is supposed to have the best fried chicken around, this was a huge letdown. The cauliflower side dish which sounded incredible on the menu was sitting in so much 'sauce' that the nuances of the flavors were lost. The gnocchi was tender and well seasoned but was served with roasted winter squash that had not been peeled and was sliced so thin or in such small pieces that trying to remove the tough peel was a real chore. One of our group had the burger and was quite happy with it and they do make great french fries. That said - there are a lot of significantly cheaper places that do a good burger and fries. The one delightful surprise was a sticky toffee dessert made with dates and topped with a scoop of orange zest ice cream - everyone at the table was fighting for a bite! So while I may go back and have a drink in the bar and enjoy the wonderful popovers, I don't think I'll go back anytime soon for what was a less than stellar meal -especially for the price.

I was surprised at my last dining experience to say the least.\n1. We waited for at least ten minutes before our drink order was taken.\n2. I chose the salmon (which I have ordered before and loved) for my entrée which had a strong fishy taste with a less than desirable texture.\n3. After we placed our order it took a half hour before it was brought to the table.\n4. Our waiter never came back to ask if we were satisfied with our entrée, but luckily my dinner partner ordered the fried chicken which we shared.\n5. When they cleared our table I was never ask why I had only taken one bite out of my salmon.\n6. To top it all off we were told that they were out of the donuts from the desert menu, and it wasn't even that late in the evening.\n7. I'm thinking that on my next trip to San Francisco the Wayfare Tavern will definitely not be on my to do list.

Went to Wayfare for my husband's birthday. Many things were great - the cocktails, the appetizers, the dessert, the wine. The main courses were alright - but perhaps were were too esoteric - with fish and scallops. The mac and cheese, though tasty, was cold. The disappointment came with the hour long wait time between the appetizers and the main courses, all the while watching the expeditor watch our table, talk to folks who stopped by to chat, then not get anything done. Our server was fabulous, and she did her best to get the manager to nudge the expeditor, but the managers were no where to be found for much of that time. Oh, the the bus people were attentive and helpful. I think next time I would go 1) for lunch, and/or 2) only order the burger. The other times I've been there I've enjoyed my meal and experience thoroughly, so we were disappointed. The manager did comp our main courses, which was gracious.

This was our third visit to Wayfare, and we were looking forward to a pleasant night out. Because we knew the restaurant was generally busy, we made a reservation well in advance. As the appointed time for our reservation came and went, we were told that the couple at 'our table' were lingering and that it would be a few minutes. After ten minutes, we were told the same thing, and after ten or fifteen more minutes, we were told that because of our patience, we would be given a special table by the fireplace. We were ushered to a two-top in a dark, drafty corner of the first floor, on the side of the fireplace, between a six-top and the wall. Our waiter acted like it was a chore to deal with us - after waiting another ten or so minutes to be recognized, his first words were, 'Are you ready to order.' We had to let him know we wanted a drink before we ordered; it apparently hadn't crossed his mind. While the food was certainly good, we felt rushed and left without dessert. While I understand that everyone has a bad night, the management here appeared to be lacking from beginning to end - if reserved tables aren't available at the appointed time, then there is obviously a scheduling problem; once we were seated there was no follow up to make sure that we were satisfied, and our waiter, probably because of the table's location, generally ignored us. I have often recommended Wayfare Tavern to friends visiting San Francisco. I'll be hesitant to do that in the future.

This was my first time at Wayfare Tavern and I'll definitely be back, as soon as I can score another reservation (do make reservations!). I had an event in the downtown area and wanted to take a couple of friends out for a special lunch. This was late on a very rainy Thursday afternoon, and the place was PACKED. Hugely busy. The space is a bit awkward, one of those upstairs-downstairs places with not a lot of wait space, so things got a bit jammed up at the hostess station. We got seated a bit after our reservation time, and then got asked to move to accommodate a bigger party. No biggie, just a bit disorganized. The food made up for everything. I had the squash soup to start, which was light and subtle compared to the syrupy versions most places serve. Delicious. My companions had the pear and burrata starter, and a word of warning - don't order this unless you're very hungry or you don't intend to have an entree. It's delicious but very filling. Then I had the salad with grilled chicken add-on. It was very good, crispy greens, not overdressed, and the chicken was awesome. My companions had the salad with salmon, which turned out to be an entree-sized chunk of fish on the side. Delicious but big! You definitely won't leave hungry. We couldn't face dessert, but next time I'll know better how to order.

One of the ovens had broken the day before and still was not fixed. Since we had a reservation, I would have appreciated being told that when they called to confirm the res. Nevertheless, everything we ordered was delicious and we love the ambiance here so its likely we will return again sometime.

This is my second time at the Wayfare Tavern. I had a reservation for three. We arrived about 10 minutes early. The greeter did not acknowledge us for five minutes. We understood why when she told us that they did not have our reserved table after I gave her my name. She asked us to sit at a bistro table near the staircase. I said we would want to wait for a regular table. After five minutes more they asked us if we wanted to sit at the bistro table to have appetizers and then they would move us to a regular table. We agreed. Halfway into the appetizers they asked us if we would stay at the bistro table if they would comp a round of cocktails. My friend said if you comp dessert we will stay here. I said to the front of house manager I don't understand what happened. She looked me straight in my eyes and said I don't understand either. Ha! It was about 62° in the restaurant and I assumed it would get warmer as the kitchen got busier. I was wrong. Everyone who is not at a table was wearing coats including me and my friends. My friend asked for all white meat chicken yet there was a leg and thigh on his plate.I have to say the food was good. The entire dining experience not so good. I appreciate the comp. But I would have preferred to be warmer and sitting at a table that I reserved over 10 days ago to be completely happy. I have to rethink if I ever go again. (same review I posted on YELP)

Noisy, crowded, people spilling onto the street, no waiting area, and the hostess won't seat you until everyone in your party has arrived. A pretentious and snooty welcome! (Red flag #2, and see $$$ paid at bottom!).\n\nVIEW THE MENU before before booking! One of the smallest menu choices around, almost no vegetables. EVERYTHING comes solo, you must buy sides. A nice interior and ambiance, but the menu is boring and unimaginative.\n\nThe fried chicken was Meh. The sirloin at $33 was maybe 4 oz. Tiny. Four diners, four entrees, two sides, six drinks in total. The bill without tip? $240.\n\nMoral: So we paid with tip $288 - ($72 PER PERSON!) and enjoyed seeing each other. Things started off badly with tepid overdone popovers. The deviled eggs hyped by the waiter were tasteless. Then we sat forever waiting for the first course to be taken away. Then only two of the four dishes arrived while two of us waited another 5 mins. The mushroom side dish was forgotten then finally brought out very tepid!! The burrata was good the salmon cooked properly albeit flavorless. Needless to say we skipped dessert. Disappointed as we've eaten there before at it was great

This was our 3rd straight Thanksgiving vacation to California that included a visit to San Francisco. While in California, we enjoyed a great deal of fine dining in Monterey, San Jose and San Francisco. Our visit to the Wayfare Tavern happened to be on our final day of a 10 day vacation. When we had just about finished eating lunch, I asked everyone to share which restaurant was their favorite and it was unanimous. We all agreed that the Wayfare Tavern served the best meal we had while in California.

We celebrated Thanksgiving at this restaurant. The ambiance was quite nice as were the servers however the service itself was subpar in that we had extended wait times, absent of check-ins and then received our meals at entirely different times without apology or explanation. Honestly, the staff were constantly doing something, just not in any organized team manner. Not the way one wants to eat any meal especially one in celebration of a holiday. The turkey entree was totally disappointing as the turkey itself was a dry as cardboard. The lamb chops, on the other hand, were very tasty and enjoyable. Next time, home cooking is top on my list!

Our reservation was for 4 at 8pm. All of us arrived on time. They were unable to seat us. After 20 minutes, we were offered to sit at the seats near the cooks. After 40 minutes, we started to look at going somewhere else for dinner. Finally, we were seated after waiting almost an hour. When I was looking on open table for another restaurant, they were still showing available at 9pm. I think they overbook routinely. The server was excellent. We started with their signature popovers. We were comped some devilled eggs which were excellent. I am a vegetarian so I had the gnocci. It was OK. I would not get it again. I do highly recommend the cauliflower and brussel sprout panzanella. The burrata and pears appetizer is excellent also. My friend had the fried chicken and thought it was average. The Frog's Leap zinfandel wine was outstanding. This was also comped. We were not told it would be. For dessert, I had pots de creme which is my favorite dessert. This one was done with the cream on the bottom so I don't think it was cooked at all. And, it was pricey at 11.00 compared to 10.00 at Absinthe. I am not sure if I will do back. I may just hit the bar to try their 'The Fields' drink. In spite of it all, I did leave a 20% tip as the service was terrific.

We were looking forward to dining at Wayfare's Tavern after seeing a show in the City. The menu looked intriguing and we loved the idea of sampling Tyler Florence's menu. We arrived with another couple (friends) and were ushered upstairs to our table. The restaurant has a nice and friendly atmosphere and the waiters were all very pleasant. We thought the shrimp cocktail and the roasted cauliflower were delicious, and the mashed potatoes were very good as well. We ordered quite a few items including the gnocchi, the fried chicken and the mac and cheese. Unfortunately, we all agreed that each of the three items mentioned in the sentence above were all very bland in flavor. That, plus we ordered a bottle of white wine off the full bottle menu and it wasn't chilled yet (causing us to order a different wine by the glass). \nSo, all in all, not the best experience. With so many different restaurant options in the City, I don't think we'll be heading back to Wayfare Tavern.

This is a destination restaurant, well worth the trip. The food is amazing!! F&W 2016 rated the fried chicken as #1 in the country! Don't be misled. This is 'upscale' fried chicken, prepared sous vide, before it is very lightly fried. Everything on the menu is creative and perfectly executed. The attention to detail is amazing. Our waiter, Ali, was really great...knowledgable and attentive and fun. He made the experience. Some dishes were too salty....lots of salt. He stated they were expecting a large group to be seated by us and did not want us to get behind them with our order. We stated that's ok we were not in a hurry. He continued to rush us until we firmly told him we are not ready to order our entree!!! Shortly after we did order, we were asked if we would move upstairs to dine as the large group was more diners than they expected and didn't want us to feel claustrophobic because we were seated in the corner with large group next to us. Obviously they wanted our table for two to add to the large group . We refused to move as I knew seating upstairs was tight. Overall we had a very poor dining experience due to the constant interruptions by the restaurant staff .

Have been to Wayfare Tavern many times, but this was the first time service was under par. We seemed to be at a table that 'fell through the cracks' and went unnoticed until we flagged down someone who sent our waiter our way. We then flagged someone down for bread (popover). After our food arrived, we again had to interrupt the waiter in the next station for assistance. Then again for a leftovers box, then again for the check. The restaurant was not busy, and we dealt with the other waiter more than our own. In fact, we only saw our waiter when he took our order, then smilingly friendly when he brought our check, other than when he was chatting with other diners. Previously, we've had better service sitting and eating at the bar!

I had the salmon, everyone else had the chicken, squash soup and BLT salad was great as always. The service on the other hand.....absolutely unacceptable at those prices. We waiting 10 minutes before anyone said hello to us at our table, then we waited 18 (we timed it) minutes for our drinks to come....In the middle of that we asked to order and our friendly albeit swamped waiter was too weeded to help. As a former waiter myself he should've asked for help before I had to ask the manager to get out drinks and take our order. Once I involved the manger things started to move. Everyone was very polite but I'm surprised that things were allowed to get to the point where I felt like we were being ignored and I had to involve the manger. Also the music was turned up to an obnoxious volume which we also had to request be turned down. Again, great food but they either need to upstaff or have a better system in place to when things get busy, I won't return if that's the service I get at those prices.

I'm lactose intolerant to Bree on my burger. The chef had Swiss available for the Ruben and since that is milder and does not cause stomach issues I asked for a substitute. The chef refused. The fact that they would not replace my cheese due to my food allergies is appalling.

Over all this was a great evening with good service, ambiance and food. The chicken is excellent and the pop overs were spectacular. \n\nThe only issue we had was that I ordered the Beef Bourguignon expecting the classic rich French beef stew. What we got was a totally dry dish with chunks of beef. It actually was a good flavor but not at all what I wanted.\n\nTo their credit when I raised this with the server they did not hesitate to change the dish out for me. I raise this purely to alert people rather than a complaint about the restaurant and their response to my questions were very professional.

At a Saturday lunch with few customers, we were sat at an unfortunate table - nicely moved when we asked, waited too long for our server and then our food. My husband and I are both fans of Tyler Florence, so we were looking forward to celebrating my birthday with lunch at his restaurant. We drove down from the Sierra Foothills and were conscientious about being on time due to the strict cancellation/late policy. We arrived at 1:00 for our 1:15 reservation. We were told we could wait at the bar where we enjoyed drinks and homemade potato chips. The bartender was very attentive, and we had the opportunity to see some of the menu selections. The people next to us were sharing the famous hamburger and fried chicken. Unfortunately, neither looked very appealing. The hamburger was about an inch and a half thick and looked very rare in the middle. Even though it was rare it still looked like a big ol' dry hunk of beef on a bun. The fried chicken looked dry and congealed. So much for the two choices I was considering! We were finally seated at 1:30, and we were escorted to a table in front of an open window. There was a brisk breeze blowing in, so we asked if we could close the window. The waiter bluntly said, 'No, the window needs to remain open for air flow.' None of the other windows in the restaurant were open, and the people next to us said they had asked to close it too, but to no avail. A few minutes later the waiter returned and offered to move us to a different table. We accepted, but he didn't make the same offer to our neighbors who had also complained. On a positive note, there was a preprinted birthday card waiting for me at the table, and all the staff was profusely wishing me a happy birthday. We ordered the mussels that were on special, the mac and cheese, and the melon salad. The mussels were chewy little bits floating in a fishy broth, the mac and cheese was just mediocre, and the melon was delicious but only by nature of being melon. We chose a dessert from the menu, but were told they were out. Really!? For the price and the hype we were really expecting more! I can't recommend this place!

I say 'surprisingly' because the name suggests an English pub, but the experience was much more upscale. The hostess was accommodating when we arrived early, and helped get us situated at the main bar with a glass of wine (insider's tip: there's an upstairs bar, too, that seems far less crowded). We were seated upstairs, and our server was exceptional; he escorted us through the menu and made a number of helpful suggestions. We started with the deviled eggs appetizer (the best I've ever eaten!) Entrees included the fried chicken, a delicious house specialty; and the sea scallops, which were a bit sandy. Overall we were very pleased and would recommend Wayfare Tavern as a great stop in downtown SFO.

Although a very limited menu, what they do they do extremely well! We were a party of six. The Kampachi Crudo, oysters and deviled eggs were our starters and all rated very high in flavor, quality (freshness) and presentation. The burgers, fresh snapper special and fried chicken were our choices and all did not disappoint! The snapper, in particular was off the hook and so was the fried chicken; which I was told a must try, so I did. Very happy I did as it was cooked to perfection and plentiful. We also tried the whipped potatoes and baked mac and cheese, both done very well, especially the potatoes. The apple crisp dessert was so-so for me but the house-made doughnuts are a must try!

Hostess was great, but the food service painstakingly SLOW. Ordered salad and burgers. OMG, the salad was so small it looked like the salad WAS the garnish on the plate. Broke a more than five year vegetarian streak here by ordering the fried chicken and it was so worth it. With six good size pieces of chicken the dish was plenty to share. Chicken was well seasoned, hot and crispy on the outside and very juicy inside without being greasy at all. With a side of buratta whipped potatoes and the popovers it was a perfect portion for the two of us. Cocktails were well balanced and strong enough to make the $13 price worth it. And we(I) still had room for slice of coconut cake! I will definitely be dreaming of sneaking back for more.

Have dined at several times since Wayfare Tavern opened mainly business lunches. Our server was a bit 'over tabled' to say the least (floor managers were invisible). Finding her was a chore as was bus staff. 30 min into seating we still did not have the 2 bottles of wine ordered and lunch orders still not taken. 45 min in we lunch finally ordered however water and bread service (popovers) requested prior by a rare appearance of bus staff still not received. When the food finally arrived it was 'good' however our entire party was ravenous at that point accordingly food was simply devoured rather than enjoyed. A third bottle of wine was ordered prior to food finally arriving and roughly 20 min later still had not made it to the table (original wine order also took extraordinary time to arrive). Caught servers eye told to cancel wine if not coming immediately as food finally had arrived, told ' a manager needed to get the wine from upstairs'. Seriously? To sum this unhappy diner experience up, Wayfare Tavern that I have dined previously for business lunches at least a dozen times, seriously dropped the ball on this visit. Wine service, bread/water service, and ability to 'track down server' were all issues. One of my clients saw our server bussing a table or two herself, again buss staff, seriously? Pay attention to staffing levels the lack of staff directly effected our dining experience, it will be a while before I give Wayfare Tavern another try...

Our waiter just grunted at us asking if we wanted to order when he finally approached us and was borderline rude throughout the meal. The food was good but the service was what you'd expect at a low end restaurant, not one that Tyler Florence has his name attached to. We won't be coming back to this one. The maître d' was extremely snooty, announcing at our check in that they couldn't seat until our fourth person (my son) was there. We said we wanted to get drinks and appetizers ahead, but he was very argumentative and insistent that we not get a table. Only when he saw us checking OpenTable for other nearby restaurants did he change his tune and allow us to be seated. Then, during the entire meal, he checked our table regularly to make sure we were eating fast enough. When we ordered a dessert and dessert wine, he rushed the waitress to make sure that we vacated the table quickly.\n\nTo add insult to injury, HE was the one who collected our credit card, and asked how everything was.\n\nThe food was fine, but frankly I haven't been treated so rudely in a long time at a restaurant, and we spent well over $300 with this company. Very disappointing, and as I mentioned we are never, ever coming back. Like, ever.

This poor review is mostly our fault. We live on the other side of the city, and even though we left a half an hour before, we still barely got there on time. We told our waiter we had one hour to dine, and he said it was no problem. **Note: you can absolutely share the famous Chicken. It's five good size pieces.** We ordered way way too much food, but our waiter didn't mention it. He should have questioned us, because we were asking lots of questions about the menu. A *little* more effort would have been great. The mac and cheese was a tasteless mushy mess and we sent it back. Gross.\n\nThe food came late given our time constraints, and we had to wolf down half of it, and then hit the road. We ended up giving half the chicken to the homeless. \n\nI guess it was our fault, but had we just not ordered the mac and cheese, and just stuck with one app, shared the chicken, and a dessert, the overall experience would have been much better. It's too bad our waiter didn't do a little bit more conversation up front.

We enjoyed our evening and would come here again. We started with a couple cocktails, the Tavern Sour and Cucumber Mule, both of which we thoroughly enjoyed - refreshing and balanced. We shared a handful of items (beef tartare, deviled eggs, fried chicken, and the roasted cauliflower) and enjoyed all of them. His favorite was the beef tartare, which he also used the complimentary pop-over as a vehicle vs the thinly-sliced potato chips. My favorite was probably the cauliflower, though I enjoyed everything. The fried chicken was good, but definitely not the best I'd had and likely won't order again. The pop-overs need a second mention as I wish all restaurants did away with the bread and just served these guys instead. So light and delicious! And the whipped butter w/kosher salt... perfection. We ended our meal with a chocolate pot de creme and coffee - yes, please. It must be said that our evening was highlighted and likely significantly influenced by our server who was personable, knowledgable, friendly, and just an all-around good guy. Servers can make or break the experience, and ours definitely made it. So thank you for that, server, whose name eludes me right now.

It was our first visit to the restaurant and to the area - - due to heavy traffic we were going to be a little bit late to the restaurant so I called to tell them. The hostess was friendly enough but said we couldn't move our reservation and she wouldn't hold it more than 15 minutes. Finally to not lose our table I got out of the car while my husband soldiered on and ran down the streets to the restaurant. Imagine my surprise when I burst through door and it was dead empty - that's right we were the ONLY people there AND as we left later it was still less than half full - - why in the world they would act that way is beyond me - it sure left a sour taste in my mouth. Other than that the food was excellent - - - the service was a little snobby (trying to hard to be 'fine dining') and we were seated at a beautiful upstairs table. The deviled eggs were delicious - light and flavorful hamachi crudo was fresh and delicately seasoned. Wayfare Burger was your typical burger but cooked properly and covered with a fried egg - unfortunately the egg was overcooked and not runny at all. The English Pea Agnolotti was rich, creamy and full of pea flavor - pasta was perfectly cooked. Salmon was cooked perfectly also and tasted fresh. Nice portion sizes also. We enjoyed ourselves after the first upset and will definitely return.

Besides the fact that Tyler Florence is one of my favorite celebrity chefs. Considering how disappointing other celebrity chef restaurants have turned out to be, this particular establishment supersedes all expectations. \n\nThe decor and ambience is perfect; sophisticated yet informal. The noise level is moderate, even though the place is always packed with guests. The decor reflect a hunting lodge, perhaps Victorian or Edwardian in period. \n\nThe food is incredible. Ordering a few plates and sharing is always a great idea. To start, the shrimp cocktail and beed tartare are great options. The tartare is topped with an egg, celery leaves, dill, and radish. The shrimp cocktail does not disappoint as well. Next, you have to try the Fried Chicken, as this is the restaurants signature dish. The meat is tender and flavorful. It is garnished with fried sage and thyme, along with wedges of lemons, the combination of flavors are unbelievably good. \n\nFinally, order the macaroni and cheese (OMG) and the browned butter cabbage with black truffles. Both sides are finger licking good. I all but licked the mac and cheese platter, and the cabbage was charred and smoky, dressed with brown butter and black truffles. \n\nI also recommend bringing a bottle of your favorite wine, as corkage is only $25.00. Reservations are easy to make on Open Table, and the staff are friendly, approachable, and knowledgable. The fact that no one comes off as pretentious or obnoxious; the space is small but comfortable, which creates a pleasant atmosphere and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend Wayfare Tavern!

While our hostess and server were great, the gentleman who escorted us to our table via elevator couldn't have been more unpleasant. We had a baby in a stroller with us and instead of him leading the way and helping us get past the crowded bar area he rushed ahead of us while we had to ask several people sitting in the bar area to kindly move so we could get the stroller through. The elevator ride was also awkward as he didn't even say a single word to us during our entire encounter. Also, he should have held the door open for us, but maybe that's just too much to ask. The space was noisy, but also a bit crowded. I understand the need to turn tables in an evening, but for the amount of the bill I think the experience should feel more special. While the service was mostly courteous, it also felt perfunctory. One of my drinks was taken away before I was done with it, and when you've paid $12 for a mojito you generally want to finish it. \n\nWe were also at a back table, and more light is desperately needed in that spot. Even though it was still daylight outside I couldn't see my menu without holding up the candle -- seriously. Again, for this price point that kind of detail should be nailed down.

After we ordered a little while he came back to see if we are ready to order. He was very attentive and the other staff also to our wants and needs. We have been there several times and the food and service is always very consistent and delicious.

Unfortunately this restaurant has adopted a 'tourists' approach – pack the restaurant and move the tables as quickly as possible. Waiters seemingly sprint from table to table. Food is slammed in front of you. I don't need fancy service, but this kind of thoughtless, breathless, indiscriminate service designed to keep things moving at a breakneck pace is really unpleasant. It detracts from the food which is actually pretty decent. If you're interested in a celebrity chef restaurant – great, have fun. But if you want a pleasant experience, there are many other better choices.

Mostly unremarkable food for the price. One order was misunderstood by the waiter and another was brought out too cold. Had to wait until everyone else finished with their entres before it was corrected. The fried chicken was excellent as were the vegetable sides. The halibut incredibly plain and boring. The deserts just ok. I can find food just as good or better at a much lower price point in SF

Waited a while for our table since I requested by the fire place and really lucked out that they even put us by the fire place! Hung out by the bar which was filled with Financial District folks. Ordered Apps and dessert. The deviled eggs were TO DIE FOR. OMG we wanted to order them again & to go!! The Brussel sprouts were delish but the hummus was dissapointing. The Donuts for Dessert were heaven. The food and atmosphere were on point - oh and it was packed for a Monday night!

Wayfare Tavern is a throwback to the way I remember dining in the past but in good way. They mange to keep all the positive things and let go of ones that do not work in the modern world. First the atmosphere is somewhat dark which can be interpreted as either romantic or an old fashioned pub based om the needs of the diner. The menu lists choices that are accessible but have enough of an update to suggest a new and imaginative approach. The portions are so generous that even though the dessert menu was tempting we could not eat another bite. The fried chicken is delicious everyone cannot cook fried chicken). The pomegranate on the Brussels sprouts were a nice surprise and the macaroni was perfect. This comfort food dinner was the like eating at someone's home on a chilly night. Come hungry.

Food was ridiculously overpriced and food was not that good. So disappointed. Love Tyler Florence and was so looking forward to going to his restaurant when I visited San Francisco. One guest had the halibut and part of it wasn't cooked. Burrata mashed potatoes tasted like they were out of a box and not for nothing the fried chicken was good but I would have enjoyed Kentucky fried chicken over this ridiculously high priced meal. The service was good but didn't like that they sit us in the back of the restaurant in a corner. Will never go there again and will do my best to tell people not to go.

Four of us had lunch at Wayfare on May 30th. The service, as always, was very, very good. However, the kitchen that day just seemed to be a bit off, particularly in connection with the WT's signature fried chicken. Overall, the food was OK, but not up to WT's usual standards - we were disappointed. Presumably, this was an outlier - a solitary bump on an otherwise well-paved culinary highway.

We came here to celebrate a birthday. Loved the appetizers (we had the oxtail poutine fries & deviled eggs), if we could we would've just ordered every appetizer for our meal. We succumbed to the FAMOUS fried chicken and scallops as our entrees. The fried chicken offered was white meat, which was flavorful but may have been why it was so dry. Being that we already have a few favorite fried chicken spots, we may inherit a specific expectation of fried chicken- like a hint of grease. I felt it needed an accompanying sauce, like honey.\n\nWe concluded that we would come back, sit at the bar, and order drinks and a handful of apps- a couple of orders of deviled eggs!

I wanted to love Wayfare Tavern, but it was a total let down. We went here for a girls' dinner, and I foolishly raved to my guests that this was going to be an amazing dinner (based on friends' previous feedback). My $25 burger was good -- but it's a burger. Many entrees are a la cart, so I expected delicious sides for the prices. The asparagus came out virtually cold and was undercooked, the mashed potatoes with goat cheese was as bland as could be, the mac n' cheese was something I could have made at home. The fried chicken was luke warm. This is upscale pub food that didn't taste upscale.

This was my second time dining at Wayfare, and several years have passed since I was there last. The food remains good, though there's something about the place that doesn't quite 'click' for me. Perhaps it's the small menu. Though the cuisine is reasonably varied, I would prefer a few more options than the handful presented. The service is acceptable. Not over-bearing or non-existent, but not overly accommodating or friendly, either. Perhaps the 12 minute wait for my 1pm reservation (party of 3) influenced my perception.\nHighlights: Prime Beef Tartare was fantastic. More noteworthy than the Organic Fried Chicken (very good) and the flavorless Burrata and Peaches. \nSuppose the need to add a 4.5% surcharge 'to assist in complying with SF mandates' is what threw me. Somehow, other excellent restaurants in town are able to include this in the cost of dining without charging $9 for a side of mushrooms or mashed potatoes. It appears that business is good 6 years after opening. The place should be making a tidy profit. Just say '4.5% surcharge to assist in building a new vacation home for Tyler in Sonoma'.

Shortly after finishing our appetizer, we were ready to order dinner and were informed that the kitchen was closed! How disappointing for a fine dining establishment to 1. I read about the great fried chicken, so my husband and I came here for lunch. He got the chicken (which is very pricey, considering you just get the 5 pieces of chicken and no sides), and I got one of the daily specials -- the Cubano sandwich (which sounded tasty -- made with homemade pickles and slaw). The chicken was moist and tasty -- seasoned well. Was it worth the price? Probably not. The big disappointment though was the Cubano sandwich. I really wanted to like it! But it was dry and had no flavor at all. The pork was dry and tasted a little stale. There was no seasoning whatsoever, and the pickles (only 2 thin slices on each half) did not have much flavor at all. The cabbage also was not seasoned. I was truly surprised that a Tyler Florence restaurant would have such a bland sandwich -- it was not good at all, and for $20, you expect a pretty good sandwich! I will say though -- the positive was the impeccable service. Very attentive waiters. I'm really sad that I can't offer more positive feedback.

We were then seated for dinner at a very nice booth and enjoyed amazing deviled eggs, Halibut, and one of the best hamburgers I've ever had. World class fried chicken. Was genuinely surprised and pleased at how wonderful it was considering all of the hype. It certainly lived up to that hype (Bon Appetit's list of best fried chicken in the USA). Terrific popovers too, which is a nice touch as they are gratis. Very cool space, genuine character and real atmosphere. Upscale but comfortable and not corporate either. \n\nI found the pricing to be on the high side, the portions aside from the large portion of fried chicken to be on the smaller side - our friends split the steak and it was tiny to begin with as was the halibut and the mediocre burrata mashed potatoes. The $5 split charge for sharing the chicken is flat out obnoxious (5 pieces of fried chicken for one person is a bit too much for one person to eat) as is the penalty for cancelling reservations (we had a party of 6) - you must cancel 48 hours ahead of time or pay a fee through OpenTable which required a credit card to secure the reservation. We didn't cancel, it's just the principle of it that bothers me. \n\nI liked the place, and might go back so don't get me wrong, but their value proposition including the aggressively higher prices and seemingly adversarial attitude towards their guests (not via the servers who were gracious) communicated through the above policies to be a bit of a turn off.

I am a huge fan of Tyler Florence so I could not wait to eat at his restaurant courtesy of my bosses for my birthday lunch. Unfortunately the excitement wore off pretty quickly. When we first sat down my bosses mentioned it was my birthday. The waiter, who seemed annoyed said Happy Birthday. To be honest, I don't like all the signing, etc. that goes along with a birthday celebration but he acted like it pained him to acknowledge it and that's all he did. I ordered the burger. I requested both the burger and the bacon both be well done. Neither were. Had to send it back. Once it came back the meat was cooked, the bacon was not, I took it off and proceeded with the burger. The burger was outstanding but in a place like Wayfare and for the cost, I think it should have been perfect - the first time. One of my bosses ordered the chopped salad. When it arrived it was a tiny plate of kale, some beets, and an egg (possibly a few other things, I did not examine it). He was really disappointed and asked the waiter if that was really the whole salad. Again, the waiter seemed annoyed and said yes. The general manager walked by and overheard my boss talking about his disappointment to another co-worker and stopped to talk with him. My boss expressed his disappointment with the plate. The general manager did nothing. Did not apologize, did not offer to bring him something else, nothing. I found that quite ridiculous. After that we pretty much did not have any service except for folks trying to take our dishes. It felt very rushed. It was not pleasant. I will not go back.

The food portions are oversized and we ended up over-ordering, as each item is listed as a stand alone, and sides are family size portions. In hindsight we could have split the fried chicken (a full half chicken of 6 pieces) had we realized. As we were travelling, it felt wasteful to have to walk away from too much food. Otherwise it was a nice high end bar food place.

I'm a big fan of TF, and yet was underwhelmed at lunch. The food, while tasty, was average, and expensive. We started with the buratta topped with peach, which was stellar…moist creamy rich cheese with thin ham and a smear of hazelnut butter.\nI tried the must have fried chicken and it was lovely moist, yet could've been more robust with seasoning. It came with 3 whole mostly raw cloves of garlic, and nothing...just chicken. \nMy pals had the salmon special with swiss chard, and the other gnocchi with squash...both were tasty but such small portions...just didn't add up.\nWe also had the sautéed mushrooms as a side….have you ever fried a hot dog in a pan? That’s what these mushrooms tasted like, no kidding.\n\nSo who’s minding the stove these days? $148. lunch for 4 people and no beverages. Wow.

Our overall experience at this restaurant was a big disappointment. Out of the four of us, I was the only one who had been here before and remembered a much better experience and food quality. Although our waiter was very nice, the service was awful - it took at least 10-15 for him to come to our table, he wanted to take our entire order at once and when we said we wanted to just start with a bottle of wine and drinks, we didn't see him again for at least another 20 minutes. The wine was never re-poured and our drinks never replenished. The food was fine, but not what you hope for in a restaurant with Wayfare's reputation. The deviled eggs were good but not great. The fried chicken was good but no where close to being 'the best in America' as the menu said. The piece of halibut was delicious but the preparation and the accompaniments were tasteless. The leek was hardly discernible, there were maybe 4 tiny green & yellow beans (couldn't they spare more for $32), and the other garnishes were as I said, tasteless. The macaroni & cheese was just okay, the whipped potatoes were runny and you could not taste the burrata. The chard was very good. Then, the dessert, which I was very excited about since Coconut cake is my favorite, tasted like it came from a medium level grocery store and had been in the refrigerator all day. The frosting even tasted stale. I'm not sure how you even achieve that. And, all for the low price of $330. We go to restaurants like this to experience high-quality food, with creative preparations and good service that will enable a fun and memorable evening. Unfortunately, we will probably not be back. On a positive note the donuts were good.

The restaurant did not have our reservation from Open Table, but accommodated none the less. Food and service were wonderful and unobtrusive. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch catching up with family events. We tried the fried chicken, which is a house specialty and it lived up to the reputation. We also had the specials, a salmon dish and deviled eggs. The Burratta was good, as was the corn soup. We requested several dishes and ate the family style. The servers arranged for the appropriate coursing to accommodate our request.

My husband had reservations about coming here- thought it would be just a celebrity chef restaurant . Upon our arrival we had to wait maybe 10 minutes for our table to be ready (no big deal) so we waited in the bar; even got a seat! The bartender was amazing - we couldn't decide on which wine to order and he offered each of us a tasting of the wines we wanted. Then he proceeded to ask us if we wanted to try anything else! Wow- great service! By the time we got our glasses of wine (5 minutes) our table was ready! We were seated upstairs at a beautiful table and had tremendous service from our waiter. The food was fabulous and of course the popovers were amazing!

Quite possibly the worst experience that I've had at Wayfare. I've been here many times before and always had a great experience. We ordered the highly recommend and solicited ribeye steak special for two - Medium rare. The steak came to the table well done. Almost like the soles on Gucci loafers. I called over the waiter and he was rude and said that a reorder would take another 25 minute wait and basically told us that he could see if they could take it off our bill or that could try to make another if we wanted to wait. We choose to wait as we were still very hungry. The next steak arrived cooked medium rare but had so much fat on the steak that there was hardly any meat. Probably 50-60% of the steak was fat. Tyler Florence would be appalled by the steak that we were served and the poor service. I called over the manager who agreed that it looked terrible and they would look into it. After waiting 10 minutes, we were disgusted and asked for the bill. They removed the steak from our bill but never offered anything to try to resolve the issue. No drinks, apps or desert. On the way out I saw the manager again and he agree that Tyler Florence would have been very upset by the experience but never offered anything to us to try to recover the situation.

The atmosphere was vibrant but not so loud that you couldn't hear your table mates. The ladies had the fried chicken while my buddy and I had Tyler's version of Pork and Beans. Amazing Pork Belly served over gigantic beans. \n\nTyler was in the restaurant that night and took the time to visit our table. The restaurant has an open kitchen and what I really found to be impressive was how much time he actually spent in the kitchen offering direction and expediting the orders. One of the BEST restaurant experiences I have ever had! The food, service, ambiance, etc was absolutely perfect! My husband and I went here to celebrate my birthday this past Friday and I couldn't have had a better birthday! When we arrived the table was set beautifully and they had given me a birthday card. The food was perfection- 1) I'm a very picky eater in general 2) I'm also picky about food because of a stomach condition that I have- however I have no complaints about the food and I can't even put into words how amazing the food was because it would not do it justice. I ate the deviled eggs, a hot roll (served fresh from the oven mind you), and the lobster. My hubby loved the rolls as well and ate the burger. We shared the chocolate creme pie for dessert. To top it all off, we had the most wonderful server named Marc. He was extremely polite, friendly, accommodating, could answer all our questions, took amazing care of us, and even had a candle on the pie for me for my birthday! I felt so spoiled. Our waiter took our wine and food order and then we really didn't see our waiter again, but the other servers did a great job. Chicken was outstanding, wine list was excellent, we also had brussel sprouts which were very tasty. Only criticism is that I sensed some urgency from the our head waiter to order. No one picked up our appetizer dishes before entree came, even though they were at our table numerous times. They need to work as a team to make restaurant flow. The reviews praising the fried chicken brought us to Wayfare. Unfortunately, overall the meal was disappointing. We were seated quickly, and ordered our drinks (just two iced teas and some water) and our meals - and then we waited. And waited. We snagged a server to ask if our drinks would be coming soon. Then we waited some more. Our entrees arrived - but still nothing to drink, not even the water, so we reminded the server about the drinks. They finally materialized, but no one came to check on us otherwise. My side of mac & cheese (very bland) came as I was just about done with the fried chicken pieces that were edible. Two of the four pieces were quite undercooked, but because the service was so poor, we didn't bother pointing it out. Only a few tables were occupied, so being busy wasn't an excuse. We had been told when we arrived that the range was not working, but since we ordered things that didn't require the stove top, we thought everything would be fine. Not sure what went wrong.

Excellent service, guest are well taken care of by staff. I am a vegetarian, but this is SF, so that shouldn't be a problem. There were appetizers, salads and there was one entre as an option. The only problem with the entre was that there was hardly anything to it. It was a pasta and pea dish, sounds great to me. That wasn't tht issue. It was portions. So, while the $20 burger was enormous and took two hands to eat. The fried chicken entre included a breast, a wing and a leg (not that I would want any of that), the vegetarian pasta dish inlcuded about 8 or 9 miniature ravioli's (ravioli's are much bigger than these MINIATURE filled pasta agnalioni?). Had been waiting to go to W. Tavern for some time. Unfortunately, the bar scene is very loud (making it difficult to listen to other guests), and upstairs was closed for a private event. The salad's green goddess dressing was not very special, and there wasn't quite enough of it. Fried chicken's portions are very generous, and I appreciate both dark and white meat being given. Chicken's crust was good but a bit on the heavy side. You have to order vegetables and other items ala carte, a pet peeve of mine when the entree's price is high. The service was top notch-- no rushing of any kind, and the plate timing was perfect.\nWe had the steak tartar to start- it's presented table side (they mix in the raw egg for you)-- but the person doing this was very much 'going thru the motions' and just performed it in the same manner one would substitute and change our salt and pepper shakers. \nMy meal was the chilled lobster (half portion)- which equated to about 4 bites. We had the starter and 2 side dishes (charred cabbage and whipped potatoes)-- both were very good-- just nothing AMAZING.\nI had wanted to go to Wayfare tavern for years -- and had held it to a really special food experience-- but it overall fell short. Had reservations here for dinner, promptly greeted and seated. Lovely atmosphere, very cool vibe. Menu is pretty limited, especially the appetizer section. Only salad was a kale salad option, not fond of kale, would really have liked to have had more options since I am gluten intolerant. Ordered the asparagus side as an appetizer to share since there were so few to choose from. Ordered the Sole, was ok, overcooked and dry, came with green beans and fingerling potatoes. My son ordered the fried chicken, definitely does NOT live up to the hype, was good but if this is supposed to be one of the top fried chicken dinners in US it should be outstanding. Ordered the burrata potatoes as a side since the chicken is a la carte, they were probably the best thing we ate. \nWould not go back, too many excellent places to eat in San Francisco without a overpriced meal from a celebrity chef who is never there.

Now, I am perfectly prepared to pay a fair sum of money for really extraordinary food but these prices are very high for what one gets. I ordered the bone marrow first course and one of the bones had NO marrow. When I mentioned to the server that I felt I had only gotten 50% of my order I was comped macaroni and cheese. In the past when a restaurant overcooked the marrow (thus melting it all away), they replaced the item. Not here. Three of our party had the chicken which was well received but I agree if you are used to Southern style fried chicken this sous vide version is a surprise.

Each dish is 'elegant comfort food' with a surprising flavor. The steak had a complex but light rub seared on it, the fried chicken has a soft herb infusion and the fish is done to perfection. Tyler was in the kitchen working and checking each dish before it departed, the team around him was bustling. Cocktails are refreshing. This has now become the mandatory place we eat for birthdays - our entire party of 4 loved it and WILL return!

We must have gone on an off-night. We had an 8pm reservation and weren't seated until after 8:30. The manager was apologetic and offered complimentary sparkling wine and appetizer, which was nice. However, it would have been preferable to be seated at the time of our reservation. Half way into dinner, the lights and ventilation system turned off and we had to finish our meal in a hot, dark room. When the server took our payment, we provided two cards but he must not have seen one since it was dark and he charged the entire bill to one card. Not the best dining experience.

What a perfect evening we had at Wayfare Tavern! We sat upstairs where it was a little quieter than downstairs with the bar crowd. The popovers were AMAZING! I wanted to bring home a dozen but refrained! We started with the deviled eggs which were perfection. I had the fried chicken which was more food than I bargained for but made a decent dent. My husband had the halibut and he enjoyed every bite. We also had the creamed corn and whipped potatoes. The corn was unlike anything I've had before and I loved it. If we're ever back in San Francisco we'll be checking out Wayfare Tavern again!

We chose the restaurant because we are Tyler Florence fans. The chicken was the best fried chicken I have had. Tender and flavorful. All the right notes with the herb spices and buttermilk came through. So much attention to detail including salt and pepper on the plate with the deep fried herbs. Wine list was also excellent and even had offering from New York. Mac & Cheese was also delish and a great choice. Very creamy. We were among the first sitted with our reservation. Service was attentive and patient. Thanks Wayfare Tavern for making our 25th special.

Our party of four went on a Friday night. The place was crowded, but we were seated promptly. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive. We started out with cocktails, - the 1915 was especially good - and appetizers - deviled eggs and bone marrow, both good. Two of us had the fried chicken, one had the sole, I opted for the stuffed filet. All were good, but my filet, which I had ordered medium rare, arrived well done. Our waiter was apologetic and took it back without question, but the kitchen apparently felt no pressure to make it right as my replacement didn't arrive until the rest of my party had finished their entrees. No adjustment to the bill either, which I didn't request, but would have been considerate given the awkward experience of eating in shifts. We were able to eat desserts together, which were also delicious. All in all a pleasant experience, with the one exception.

We were in San Fran for one night prior to a trip to the Monterey Bay area. We make this trip every July. I did my research and chose Wayfare Tavern. We arrived at 8:10 for our 8:15 reservation by taxi. The hostess said it would be 15 minutes. After 30 minutes a manager offered us a drink and apologized for the wait. At the hour mark, we decided the restaurant was not going to seat us. They had seated other parties coming in after us. We were a party of 3, well-dressed as we always make the effort.\n\nThe thing that bothered me the most was when I told the hostess we couldn't wait any longer, she just said, okay. Not, I'm really sorry or how can we make this better. Just, okay, bye.

We had a reservation, got taken upstairs immediately, then had to stand and wait several minutes for the table to be ready. (No one offered us a drink, suggested we'd be more comfortable if we had a seat at the upstairs bar, etc.-- we just stood around awkwardly.) We waited even longer once we got to our table to get a menu. When the waiter arrived, he took a drink order and left immediately-- even though we'd had the menus long enough to know what we wanted to eat. We then waited again for him to return to take our order. Eventually our drinks arrived. Despite my husband finishing his cocktail during the appetizer and ordering another before the appetizer was removed, our entrees arrived before we are able to get a second drink from our waiter-- who came to check on us during the entree and said 'oh, you're waiting on a drink' after mentioning to the server bringing our dinner to the table that we were waiting on another drink. In short, we were consistently ignored and waited unacceptably long to get very basic things-- and for me, the mark of fine dining is feeling that you're being attended to as well as getting a delicious meal. Simply not worth it and won't be back.

Impeccable food, beautifully sourced ingredients. The Devilled eggs are great, the Fried Chicken, the best I've ever head. Sous Vide and then fried. Wow! My party and I waited about an hour for our table after setting up an 8:15 reservation, so that's the bad news, but overall I would say the folks at Wayfare did a good job ameliorating the inconvenience of such a long wait (particularly WITH a reservation). They served us several appetizers on the house, made sure we had a place to sit in the bar area while we waited for our table, and once we did get seated our waiter was attentive, professional, and courteous. The food was good - not amazing - but good, the cocktails were VERY good, the space is beautiful, and the ambience is lively and upscale.

Our evening was ruined by the restaurant allowing 3 people to squeeze into a 2 top next to us. Traveling from out of town we have dined here before & knowing how crowded the restaurant can be requested a booth downstairs. We were seated at a two top upstairs on the end of a row, which was fine until 10 minutes later when 3 women were seated at a the 2 top next to us. They allowed this because the woman was just joining them for a 'quick' cocktail. She stayed for more than an hour!! They were loud. The four top originally seated next to them moved. At this caliber of a restaurant allowing this situation to happen is inexcusable. The management should never have allowed this situation to occur. They can share a cocktail at the bar & be seated when there are only 2 people! Let me go on to say that the women who stayed only shared one entree & a side. Glad the restaurant went out of their way to accommodate such diners! We will never be back.

Wayfare had turned into a little bit of an anniversary tradition over the last couple years but unfortunately this visit will be our last.\n\nI'd say the food was just as good as prior visits but that could have been my hungry stomach speaking as we (2 diners) waited over an hour in-between finishing our appetizers and getting our entrees (Monday 6:00pm). I thought at one point I'd entice the popover man back over but he did elude me as neighboring tables were offered 2nd rounds.\n\nWe were updated around 45 min mark that our ticket was coming up soon. Right around when the table next to had their leftovers boxed. Funny when they literally ordered minutes before us (actually turned from their table to ours) and ordered the same entrees.\n\nAbout 15 mins later the manager came by to apologize that our food STILL hadn't arrived and that she would like to get us dessert as an apology. No thanks as I was still waiting for them to raise, butcher and fry my (Voted Best in the Country) chicken.\n\nI do appreciate them comping our appetizers and my SO did enjoy anniversary card but there are a lot of restaurants at that pricepoint still on my to-do list.

With all of the noise, we heard differently!!!! We paid the bill but the steak was not worth $125.00. The service person should have said the bone-in-ribeye steak special is ONE-hundred and twenty-five dollars and serves 2!!! We had the Avocado Salad, Potato Chowder, Tavern burger, Mac and Cheese, and the Fried Chicken (Best for last). For dessert we had the coconut cake (moist, not too sweet, it was very good). One guest relished her ample burger and it was cooked just right, however my other guest received her sandwich on a bun when she ordered a flat bread. I have been going here for years and have noticed recently that the food and choices are not as good as they once were. Before they had a large variety of choices for both appetizers and entrees and it was always difficult to choose because they all were enticing. Now they seem to limit their menu to 2 signature items (the friend chicken and burger) and one other special. Even their appetizers which would have choices like short rib poulette, octopus, and other interesting items is now limited to basically their deviled eggs and soups. I hope they eventually return to what made their restaurant great before.

The food was mostly good, though as a vegetarian I had a tough time finding anything to eat. The two people I was with enjoyed their fried chicken. \n\nThere were three things that would cause me to think twice about returning: \n - Service was very, very slow. We waited 30 minutes between initial drink orders and the arrival of starters. We had to flag down a server every time we wanted something. \n- The tables are so crowded we could not get in or out without asking our neighbors to move. \n- It's really loud. \n\nLike many SF restaurants, they have the irritating habit of adding 4% (a number that is creeping upward) for 'SF mandates'. This is a way of gouging customers, nothing more. It's irritating. \n\nThis place is okay by SF standards, but I will not be going back anytime soon.

Although the bar scene downstairs was vibrant and hopping, we were escorted upstairs to a much quieter dining area where table talk was very easy. We started with one of their specialty cocktails. My only suggestion is to order the Hemmingway Daquari without crushed ice which added nothing to the citrus blend of flavors and only watered down the drink.\nEverything on the menu was a la carte. The warm pop-overs were served individually and a nice change from rolls or sliced bread... and yes, have a second one if you would like it!\nWe shared a butter lettuce salad with house made Green Goddess dressing... excellent blend of flavors. The fried chicken was among the best I've had with half a chicken cut in large pieces and de-boned with the exception of the wings and a thigh bone. The pieces were crisp and very tasty with a blend of spices to give it a little heat. The addition of their rich, creamy mashed potatoes was the perfect accompaniment. \nWait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. It's definitely worth another visit!

Of all of the incredible restaurants in the city we chose Wayfare Tavern as one of those nights. Service overall was very good. From the bartender to the server they were personable and attentive. One of our entree's, fish, had to be sent back when,I guess he was a Mgr., a gentleman came over to ask how everything was and he was the one that took the fish away but never came back. The server was very apologetic. My entree was the Fried Chicken, 'the best fried chicken in the country', which I was looking forward to. It unfortunately did not live up to the hype. It was fun sitting near the kitchen and watching the action. A nice atmosphere and overall a great experience. Highly recommend.

I've been here for lunch a few times and thought dinner would be a good time. Great atmosphere, but wow it's loud. My date and I couldn't hear each other. The folks next to us were having the times of their lives, and Yay for them. Popovers = ridiculously good. Salads = weirdly dry. Fried chicken = very good, not heavy, complex flavors. Wine by the glass = adequate. If you're a wine person, their by-the-bottle service looks extensive and not insanely priced. It reminded me of a more expensively decorated, narrower, louder Park Tavern. Not bad.

Disappointment esp since it is indeed a pricey place.\n\nFood was good and presentation was very nice as well.\n\nOur server, extremely knowledgable and professional.\n\nWe were seated next to the TV room where there was a private party and servers and patrons were in and out every minute, it was slightly disturbing.

Started out with the deviled eggs. I am not sure why every restaurant is doing deviled eggs now. They were good but I don't understand the appeal. My husband had the filet stuffed with short rib, it was so so. I had the burger, tasted like any other gourmet burger and we got a side of mac and cheese, which I thought the pasta was way too mushy but my husband liked it. Dessert was coconut cake, again nothing to brag about.

Came for dinner with a work friend since we were both in town for a meeting and we knew the dinner would be expensed (holla). The menu doesn't have a whole lot of options but each of us found ourselves torn over a few different dishes for our main course. She ended up with some sort of pasta and I had a salad and soup. Everything was good but I wasn't in love with the flavors. If I ever go again I'll probably get the tavern burger because I've heard it's the best thing on the menu. I just wasn't in a meaty mood that night and as such wasn't wowed. The restaurant itself is super cool though and the service was great.

I LOVE Wayfare Tavern. The food is delicious and always on point (I should know, my husband is a prominent Sous Chef in SF!). But I was so disappointed this time, there was a cockroach that skittered across our table before our food came. It was my birthday on june 2 and i got such bad service im kind of hurt by it. \nOur server came and while we were getting our drinks (my boyfriend and I) he said to our server, ' its her birthday!' And our server said 'great you and 6 other people here tonight! ' \nReally? What server says that to someone ON THEIR BIRTHDAY?! I told her i can show my id! \nAnyway my cocktail came and it arrived on a small silver tray which i thought was adorable and our server said 'yeah it doubles as drug paraphernalia.' \nWtf?\nWe fried chicken and the tavern burger (sf is expensive to live in) and cocktails which were awesome. just being in Tyler Florence's restaurant just made me happy(fangirl). I was underwhelmed by our server not making any effort to make my birthday special at all. \nI have though called the management and it has been resolved. I just want people to know that not everyone gets treated equally. \n\nThanks for reading.

High quality food, lovely presentations and hearty portion sizes. Everyone says the burgers are 'to die for'. I had the burger, which was amazing. There was a steak dinner for two that two of my friends had. They said it was incredibly tasty too. Nothing was even mediocre, just great!

We went to SF for my son's graduation from college and finished up the weekend with a family only dinner at the Wayfare Tavern. We were seated next to a private room with a bunch of 30-something men in it. The men were drunk, completely out of control and many times the whole restaurant stopped and looked toward the room in dismay. I asked to be reseated and was denied. I asked to have the door to the private room closed, but the service people kept opening it up again. At one point, a couple men in the room started to wrestle and slammed up against a wall. And multiple times, one or more of the men would leave the room to use the bathroom, pumping into guests and tables, and saying generally rude things. It was like the place was taken over by thugs.\n\nSo I understand that bad behavior happens, but my question becomes: why didn't management do anything about it.....like cutting them off or kicking them out? Why was I not reseated...immediately....upon request? And why wasn't I given some dispensation (discount, voucher, apology) for having to endure what was supposed to be a celebration dinner? It seems the bad behavior got all the special attention. WOW!\n\nI'm sorry but there is simply no way I can give this restaurant anything but a FAIL.

Everything was great in this restaurant with the exception of a horrible, horrible hostess who must have had a really bad previous evening.! We reserved a table for four at 5:15 PM on a Sunday PM. Three of us arrived promptly at 5:00 PM. We informed the hostess that the last person in our party was going to be late and that if she wanted to sit us later, we were okay with that. The hostess kept on asking if we were going to order appetizers for the latecomer and we said yes. Then we asked if she could sit us later so we could sit at the bar and not inconvenience anyone at the table. (Note: the restaurant was practically empty at this time) She replied, (very arrogantly), that she would hold the reservation until 5:30. Mind you I did not tell her we were not going to take the reservation but to sit us at a later time when our party was complete so as to comply with her requests for a complete party !!!! So three of us sat at the bar, ordered some drinks and APPETIZERS and waited for 5:30, the appointed hour! We had to alert the hostess that she could sit us (three of us) if she wanted to and we would just wait for the last person at the table. The hostess once again asked us if we would order the entree for the missing person and by this time, we were really tired of this insistence on having to order for someone that is not around. If the person did not show up for any reason they may have had for missing the reservation, would we have had to order four entrees simply because we made a reservation for four people?? There were many tables for four in the restaurant that sat only three and many that ordered only one or two entrees. I have never been treated so badly by a hostess in all of my years of eating at upscale restaurants that I consider this something that needs to be corrected by your restaurant. This hostess was a total bitch and someone should tell her to lighten up!! I was the ultimate gentleman, embarrassed no less, but did not accost her at that time!!

We came with our two teenagers on Valentine's Day! They served us the tasting menu and graciously let the kids order ala carte. The tasting menu was so good and definitely well worth the price. The foie gras was delicious. The seared scallops were tender, juicy, and generously topped with shaved truffles..yum! Excellently prepared duck breast, perfectly medium. The boys enjoyed the burger and Bavette steak. Best popovers, we couldn't stop eating them. Perfectly tender, light with a good slightly custardy flavor. We enjoyed the creamy bread pudding and generously sized doughnuts for dessert. They were sweet lavender? doughnuts served with creme fraiche, lemon curd, and orange marmalade...so good!\nPortion sizes were very good. Been here several times and have always liked it. Came for a business lunch the other day. There were 3 of us. After ordering, it was about 20 min to get our food. Only two orders came out. Waited another 15 minutes for the third. Wasn't immediately told what was going on or why. (Apparently the chef was not happy with the way the fish looked on the third order and it had to be re-done). Very awkward for the 2 people who got their food to sit and eat for 15 minutes while third person waited for her food. They should have brought something out for the third person while she was waiting or offered her another drink or something. She just sat there for 15 extra minutes waiting while the other two ate. Wayfare comped the third meal. Should have comped the entire bill. Very unhappy.

This was our first experience at Wayfare Tavern. My husband and I decided on a short weekend jaunt to San Francisco and we knew Wayfare Tavern was one of our spots to go. We arrived for a late lunch. We were seated kindly and promptly. The interior design was regal. The table settings were grand. The service was superb. The popovers were……..oh good grief….I have no words! I could've stuffed my face with these and called it a day! We ordered the deviled eggs and they were fun and funky. I ordered the special which was a shaved ham burger/sandwich with caramelized onions and topped with a fried egg. My husband got a traditional bacon burger topped with a fried egg and ordered a handcrafted Old Fashioned from the bar. Both burgers/sandwiches were full of flavor and both had a uniqueness to them that made them more memorable than just a burger or ham sandwich. If we had a complaint…and we can hardly call it a complaint…it was the brioche bun we both had was a little dry and too thick. With that being said, we can't wait for our next jaunt to San Fran to stop at the Wayfare Tavern again to continue perusing the menu! P.S. My husband loved the Old Fashioned, too.

Too bad that to get there we had to first deal with the 3 children dealing with reservation and the front of the house. \nThey made us wait 35 minutes for our table. I was running 5 minutes late so I called to tell them that, and asked that if we were NOT going to be seated that we were fine going somewhere else as we were hungry and tired and it was raining and finding parking was a nightmare. The hostess assured me that if I was there within the next five minutes that she was holding the table. \nI made it in 4 minutes! I asked for the table and they had given it away. I talked to the manager and showed him my phone which the time of the call and the time I came into the restaurant and he was aware of the conversation, and I guess they thought I was going to make it on time and gave the table away. \nTo make things better they gave us free glasses of wine, but we had to wait for another table and the whole time they kept telling us it would only be 5 more minutes so that we wouldn't leave and that turned into 35 minutes of standing waiting. \nWon't be going again.

Had been looking forward to this for some time but was sadly disappointed. Dined alone as is often the case on business trips and had to 'discuss' with the maitre'd for an actual table that wasn't in the bar or at the counter. It's was 9pm on a Monday. Finally secured a lovely table upstairs thanks to another member of staff. Decor and ambiance is great with a nice buzz. It went downhill from there other than the wine list. My waiter was decidedly casual, imprecise and inattentive. Every time I needed to ask for something it felt like I was flagging down a bus. Wine/cocktails/drinks list is good, something for everyone at standard mid to high end pricing. Average 13-15 a glass or cocktail. Starter of devilled eggs, very good. Main of signature fried chicken, disappointing. Chicken was dry and generally flavourless. Topped with 'crunchy herbs' which means deep fried and inedible. Confit of garlic was actually garlic bulbs pan roasted for a few minutes so hard, acute and inedible (unless you like it raw). Shouldn't a garlic confit be soft, sumptuous and sweet. Side of mushrooms was just ok. Mushrooms well cooked with a base of mushroom purée, pleasant enough. Same notes re garlic confit accompaniment on this dish. Such a shame. Overall, go for drinks but skip dinner and please WT, pick up the service. A gaggle of waitstaff chatting and surfing their phones at the end of the bar during service is just not good enough. I'll be seeking alternatives.

When we got to Wayfare Tavern, I was struck by the outstanding ambiance and layout of the place. The open kitchen, the upfront bar, upstairs dining; it all spoke to me. Unfortunately, once we were seated, our experience took a wayleft turn. \n\nOur waiter was upitty and disrespectful to us from the beginning. I inquired about the teas and he rattled them off so quickly I asked again, to his disdain. The waiter seemed far more intent on taking the orders of the gentlemen next to us, as they were drinking and I was not (note that my wife was drinking). In fact, it got so bad that he took our drinks, went over and took theirs, brought their drinks back, took their app orders, and brought them their app plates all before he came back with our drinks. He then saw that their apps were out, and jumped over to see how they were and take their food order. Meanwhile, we still had yet to order apps. I cannot make this up. \n\nLuckily, once the order was taken we did not have to rely on his timeliness, as the excellent bus staff was there to bring and take away plates and they could not have been nicer. We ordered the tater tot poutine as an app, the fried chicken and steak with a side of mac & cheese (SO GOOD!), and then the donuts (again SO GOOD!) and chocolate cake to finish. The chicken was a bit hit or miss depending on the piece, the steak was a tad overcooked for medium, but everything else was just so wonderful. The tater tot poutine was my wife's favorite (besides desert), but I was extremely fond of the mac & cheese. So perfectly spiced and baked. We will definitely come back when in SF, but will definitely request a different area. :)

Once seated, it took a while for our waiter to come by, but things did get better. When he brought out our bottle of wine he took out the cork and put it in front of my husband, who happens to not have a sense of smell. After my husband took a sip and said the wine was fine, the waiter poured our glasses and walked away. I then took the cork and sniffed it - it smelled a bit odd so I must have made a bit of a face. Our waiter must have seen me as he came right over to make sure the wine was ok (which it was). Other than the fact that the menu is a bit limited, we enjoyed the rest of the night and our meal. We had the sea bass, burger and brussel sprouts - recommend all of them. Our waiter was friendly and attentive.

For being the busy spot that it is, even if you hold a reservation, be prepared to wait 30 minutes. Once you are seated, you'll forget all about your wait. The ambiance of the ground floor is energetic, with it's Victorian style walls and furniture. Friendly staff will whisk you upstairs for dining, where you'll be delighted with its dark decor, which is one of the best interiors for a restaurant in the city. Staff are friendly, and the food is top notch. You must have the fried chicken, mac & cheese, and the potatoes. Everything is fantastic, and you won't be disappointed. Oh, did I mention the bread. The BREAD! Go and find out.

Wayfare Tavern was recommended and with the Tyler Florence name, we had high expectations. Reservations are more difficult for a Saturday night, but we came early and were seated fairly quickly. We sat at the chef's bar and loved watching the preparation but still felt like we had some privacy. The burger and fried chicken appeared to be ordered by just about everyone including us although an aged rib eye for two tempted us. For the first time, we went with the 'standards' which was so good. We also ordered the mac and cheese, which it all ended up to be too much food, but good food none the less. The beef tartare also seemed very popular. Would definitely go back to try some other things next time we are in the city. My husband doesn't love the more trendy, minimalistic places, so he was happy when we sat down at the bar - dark woods, tiled floor, perfect lighting and very welcoming servers. It is a place you can enjoy a great full meal, stop by for a cocktail and oysters or a late night cap with some amazing looking donuts. Tyler also dropped in, the staff seemed to genuinely like him which makes it even better and was nice enough to stop by tables to chat before he left.

Was so excited to try Tyler's restaurant... We ordered the fried chicken, mac n cheese & burger. The fried chicken was mediocre, no real punch of flavor. The mac n cheese came out cold, sent it back and it was now hot, but the flavor was just blah. I ordered the burger medium well - it came out more like medium rare. It tasted like raw meat and really made my stomach turn. The overal flavor was heavy and again just no pop of flavor - even the fries were disappointing. The highlight of the meal was the popovers - those were delicious!! I left very disappointed to say the least :(.

Sadly, I no longer work in SF, so dropping in for lunch is no longer an option during the week.

My partner and I were in for a Valentine's Day/Anniversary dinner. We had a reservation for 5:30 but we came earlier than that, and we were seated in less than 2 minutes. Good thing too, because we were starving! They served us delicious, flaky bread with butter and before I knew it, our food came. I was surprised by how quick it was and it made me a little wary about the quality of the food. Nevertheless, the fried chicken with herbs and lemon lived up to the hype. My partner ordered the Tavern burger and he said it tasted like pizza... but in a good way! Must be something about the meat. We also had the brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes, thumbs all the way up. The servers were friendly and punctual, the atmosphere was quite energetic, mostly due to the folks at the bar. We were in and out in under an hour and had a good time.

My 1st review of Wayfare Tavern, but my 3rd visit there. I'm 'thrice and gone'.\r\n\r\n1st time: After being promised a table 'in 15 mins', 1 hour later we left.\r\n2nd time: Brought my son for a lunch. Great burger, great fixings, but very greasy and asking for a 2nd ketchup was like pulling teeth.\r\n3rd time: Last night (Feb 16, 2016). Ordered the burger again hoping it would not be the greasy thing I had the last time. Nope, just as greasy (but to be fair, also just as good). The waiter was a total loser. He asked how we were doing and we both said the burgers were too greasy. He sloughed it off saying 'yeah, these are known to be a challenge'. I'm thinking, yeah, right, and maybe I should send you my cleaning bill since you don't even serve it on a plate but rather some kind of wood board where everything drips off. The waiter also pissed me off when he asked what we wanted to drink. We showed him the sparkling water we already brought to the table from the bar. I would have expected him to ask 'do you want another one?' but instead he said 'I'll go get you another one' and departed before we could stop him. That was shady, at best. Then when we ordered the burgers (which is why we came), he turned his nose up to the fact that we did not order one of the more expensive dishes. Going back to the burgers, I expect significantly more for a$22 burger - like wipe/absorb the grease off and serve it on a real plate that can handle any unexpected dripping. Needless to say, I won't go back - ever. There are plenty of great burger places in SF, many of which are just as good at a lower cost.

My sister was in town from Nevada and really wanted to go to Tyler's restaurant. I could only get a 1:30 reservation on Saturday 2/6. When we arrived our party of 4 had to wait 10 mins to be seated. We orders drinks and 2 vegetable sides instead of appetizers. The food was cold and would have been much better at least warm but was still good. Drinks came out at all different times. Service was so so and I attribute this to the fact that the restaurant was closing for a special Pre-Super Bowl function being held that evening. We ordered the donuts which were amazing and our waiter did not rush us out, even though it was evident they were trying to close up. Would go back and give it one more try but for the price you expect to have hot/warm food and a little better service. Spent $100. for 3 drinks, 2 sides and 1 dessert.

We are natives of San Francisco and wanted to support local restaurants during the week leading up to the Super Bowl. Reports were that many people were staying away from local eateries due to traffic concerns. We enjoy Wayfare Tavern and Tyler Florence very much. Terrific food and fun scene. On this particular visit, however, our experience was not one of our best. Midway through our 6:00 p.m. dinner reservation, someone cranked up Mambo music in the upstairs dining room. It became almost impossible to hold a conversation or communicate with our server. Yelling over your fried chicken isn't our idea of a good time. We couldn't wait to get out of there. We will return for lunch, but this particular experience was diminished due to the extremely loud music.

I can tell why people rave about this fried chicken, so flavorful and moist, yet it doesn't feel heavy. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned! My friend and I enjoyed a Sunday afternoon lunch here. We had good coffee and enjoyed the complimentary popvers. As a starter, we shared oysters which were fresh and delicious. For my main course I ordered a burger. It was very appealing to the eye, looked juicy and flavorful. But it was actually rarher dry, the meat, even though It was medium done, was still very dry and flavorless. The bun was the worst part. It was toasted but shiny(so im guessing buttered). But it was very dry and tasted like a two day old bun. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the service and had high hopes for the tavern so even though the burger was very disappointing, Id go back to try their other offerings.

Hi I would like to start by mention the stuff I was really annoyed by.Monday night is a really slow night for restaurants in general, my reservation was at 7:30 and I show up at 7 to have a glass of wine at the bar b4 get seated.Well here is were the problem started, there were 2 bartenders (one was a ladie with blonde hair and the other one a young man) I imagine one of them was working the well and the other bartender was working costumes and bar . Well we spend 17 minutes waiting to get 2 glasses of wine.thats INSAINE!!the bar was not full and the young bartender was just looking to a book for all this time facing with his back the front of the bar so it was very inconvenient for me and my date to be just stand infront of the bar all that long. After we pay and seated at one of the tables at the bar I have to stand up and talk to the host asking about if my table was ready (it was all ready 7:45pm) and she goes your table is not ready yet we are wating for them to leave.exusme me?? I work in the industry and that's why I did a resvation to don't WAIT!!! Lack of communication between host and severs.Unaceptable.i also I asked for a table with a window view and I got the 2 top by the starts!!! That's NOT right!Food and service (the sever ) was amZingi so kuddos to the sever that I can remember his name but he was bold and very very nice. I'm not sure if I want to come back cause my date was very disaponted of the fist half of our evening.I hope\nYou take this notes to consideration. The hostess was indifferent, the waiter slightly more invested. Speak in rushed bullet points or their attention is onto something else. No one needs to fawn over us, but there is a prevalence of mechanical service that has become ubiquitous in San Francisco. \n\nThe food was very good, and everything brought in a timely manner. Good wine and beer selection as well. The plates were picked up with food remaining and without asking if we were finished. Not a big deal, but it seemed consistent with the entire staff being in their world and not ours. They worked efficiently, but didn't seem to value our choice of restaurant. Perhaps having just come from Wilkes Bashford, it skewed our expectations for attentive service.\n\nIn any event, I might recommend Wayfare Tavern like I would a movie 'that YOU might like'. I just can't see any compelling reason to return soon.

Awesome restaurant in the bay area. Modest prices as far as a James Beard finalist goes for the area. Everybody got beer and the list was impressive offering lots of local options which was nice for an out of towner like myself. We split the fried chicken entree as an appetizer which is a must! Be sure to use all the lemon on it too. For entrees I split the scallops (which was a special) and the burger. Both meals were excellent! I am an absolute scallop snob and the chef delivered on point. The only thing that left me wanting more was the portion size of the scallops. The entree was served with 3 modestly sized scallops and the typical portion I usually see is 5. Other than that 100% recommend this to anybody for any occasion.

We were so excited to go to Tyler Florence restaurant - have all his cookbooks which we use weekly. It is also our anniversary weekend and we drive into the city to celebrate. Great waiter and the restaurant is so very pretty. My Manhattan cocktail was stellar. The dinner took 1.2 hours to arrive. Our waiter apologized. There was a private party happening and the kitchen was backed up and only the private party was getting focus so hence the 1.2 hour wait, popovers were offered multiple times. When food arrived my pasta was cold and my husbands fish was very very over cooked and broccoli was cold. No one came back for a while or even asked about the food, could not even ask for more ketchup for my sons burger and fries. The burger and popovers were only things enjoyed. Would have stayed for desert but we were so disappointed that we did not want to spend more good money after such poor entrees and such a long wait. The bar stool seats are about 3 feet from the counter which makes it almost impossible to sit comfortably in the seat and reach the counter. It was loud, as expected. Could be that I wasn't starving when I arrived, but food felt only mediocre, a little disappointed given the reputation that precedes it. Fried chicken came with generous portions, had well seasoned crispy thin breading/skin, but meat was a little tasteless though tender. The burger had a nice thick patty, but a little greasy and again, seems lacking in taste. We went for lunch and were seated right away. The complimentary popovers were a nice surprise instead of offering bread. I had the fried chicken and it was incredibly moist and flavorful. My husband had the cheeseburger and he enjoyed his as well, and some of my chicken.

This was our second annual visit to the restaurant and we plan to visit here again next year. The service was great and the food was simply delicious. Last year we had our two daughters with us and this year we met my wife's step brother. Whether your on a romantic date or spending time with good friends or family, you won't be disappointed.

My mom has wanted to go here for over a year and we finally got a reservation for her birthday (after several attempts, learned you need to call a month ahead to get the night you want!). Despite the smaller-sized menu, all 4 of us found something to order and every plate was delicious. I can especially recommend the deviled eggs, squash soup, beef tartare (woozers!), mac'n'cheese, and donuts. But unfortunately our amazing food and delightful company was spoiled by the frankly horrible service we received. When we first sat down, we sat for 15 minutes without anyone stopping by, had to ask for water refills 4 different times, waited 15 minutes with dirty plates until they were cleared, had to ask the kitchen staff to order us dessert, and so on and so on. Particularly puzzling was it seemed they had more than enough staff and we were sitting right by the kitchen... so it wasn't like we were in a dark corner where people could forget about us. Unfortunately this really killed the evening for us and we're not sure its worth a return, especially after more than a year's build up of anticipation.

The food was excellent, but the dinner was spoiled by an extremely aggressive waiter. The waiter did not command, but rather DEMANDED our attention every time he came over. We sat in a long booth, so apparently he felt it was necessary to force us to set and clear our own table. It's fine if the waiter has to hand us our plate, but I could argue he could have leaned over a little to do it himself. But even if he had to hand it to us, he thrust it in our hand and oddly forced eye contact while doing so. So he couldn't just subtly hand us the plate while we talked, he had to stop everything and hand us our silverware, glass, plate and then all over again when he had to remove it. Very bizarre behavior. Total turn off. Sadly the Mill Valley/ El Paseo has awful service too, so I guess Tyler Florence gets food but lacks the concept of service and basic human interaction. I can't support this. San Francisco is already filled with too many jerks. We have to stop somewhere. I say go somewhere else.

Second time dining at wayfare. Both times the food has been outstanding. The service is excellent as well. The octopus appetizer was delicious and the Brussels sprouts were amazing. CarmeliZed perfectly. Will definitely go back again!

I went there because the top 100 restaurant list. But we were disappointed with the service and the food. The waiter was abrupt and always rushing us. I'm disappointed with the food, tasting rather blend. Will not return.

The food itself was delicious for the most part. However, the medium steak I had ordered was more well-done, so it had a bit of a chew to it. The ambiance was great, especially for date night, though I would not suggest bringing someone here on a first date as it quite loud, and not very personal. The one thing we did dislike especially was the heat. It was very warm inside the restaurant, which did not make for the most comfortable meal.

Over priced and over rated. Waiter would not accept appetizer order without dinner selection at the same time. Not recommended for a quiet or relaxing dinner. Noisy and they tend to rush to turn over tables.

Nice warm homey feeling. Good vibe at the bar while waiting. All the food was delicious, but if you like scallops, they were some of the best ever tasted. Nice moderate to high wine list, but worth it. Service was timely, wait was short, and all were friendly!

One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It's very obvious that the food is made with great care and a lot of thought is put into each item on the menu. The modern take on the old Irish pub makes the ambiance unique to match the menu.

This place was excellent - the food was unique but comforting at the same time. The portions were great as well! Definitely want to go back for the organic fried chicken.

We love eating at Wayfare Tavern and try to every time we're in the city. \nWe have always been seated promptly at our reservation time in the past, however on this night we waited a little over 30 minutes beyond our reservation. The hostess more than made up for it by bringing us both the deviled eggs and the steak tar tar appetizers for free. \nFrom that point on we had amazing service and the food was amazing as always

This was my 4th visit and I enjoy Wayfarer Tavern more every time I visit. The menu is fun, interesting and always a bit different. I felt a bit frumpy ordering the Tavern Burger until it came with its red onion marmalade & aioli & brioche bun. Oh so good. My companions had Roasted Sea Bass and Tyler's famous organic fried chicken. All very good, perfectly prepared and presented. We shared warm green olives and a side of brussels sprouts that were SO delicious I wanted more but finally had to cry 'uncle' and give up. This is a very good, fun place to eat in the financial district. It's only about 6 or 7 blocks from the Ferry Building, an easy walk. Everyone is nice, the service is superb and I hope to go another 4 times. Valet parking also available.

Waiter kept rushing my wife and I to order asking multiple times if we are ready but we just started to enjoy the atmosphere and talk catch up for the day. It was very disappointing when the waiter didn't tell me about the tartare dash whether it was raw meat or not. I had to speak with the manager myself to settle everything down and exchange my entre. Overall it was such a disappointment and will never go back for dinner even though I have $50 gift card but will not bother to use.

My second visit in Wayfare Tavern was more exciting to sit on the counter, watch the chefs working in the kitchen, and eat Tyler Florence's comforting dishes. Two of my favorite dishes in the restaurant were the organic fried chicken and ice cream/sorbet dessert. The fried chicken was moist and juicy on the inside and the crust on the outside of the chicken is crispy. For dessert, the fennel pollen ice cream made my mother and myself happy. I would love to come back to Wayfare Tavern again!

Had an early reservation .... Was seated promptly. The setting is somewhat of a colonial theme and the seats are not very comfortable. We had read that the fried chicken was great and so we ordered that. It took about an hour to get our chicken because of issues in the kitchen. We felt badly for our server because we had to keep asking her about our order. So she was somewhat stuck in the middle.

We were really disappointed. The burger was good. The salad was a big disappoinment. It was poorly dressed. Overall, it's basically an expense account restaurant. Really overpriced for the quality but everybody there seemed to be on a business dinner. Our waiter was fine. The room is nice but the food is really lacking for that price-point.

We celebrated a 30th anniversary there this weekend and were instantly impressed with the ambiance. Casual elegance...not too stuffy...not too relaxed. As is our custom when available we opted for the galley seating to observe all the action. This certainly enhanced our taste buds. The chefs and wait staff all seemed effortlessly in sync doing their thing. We started with the popular deviled eggs. Yum doesn't do them justice. So tasty and a stand alone meal. The signature items, the Organic Fried Chicken and the Le Grand Burger, were outstanding. Too outstanding for words and flavor packed. Did I mention the Mac....a fresh take on this side. Couldn't fit another thing into our tummy but thought long and hard about the cheese cake. Next SF trip will definitely include Wayfare for sure!

I booked lunch for myself and 3 colleagues for 11:15am. Although the restaurant was nearly empty, we were seated upstairs in a corner. The lunch menu was fairly limited; in fact, 3 of us ordered the special since the menu wasn't overly appealing. The chicken salad sandwich one colleague ordered consisted of a tasty chicken salad on top of completely burnt toast. Our specials were fine, but when one of us ordered a 2nd diet coke, she was charged for it; I didn't expect a restaurant like Wayfare to charge for refills. It's not the $$, but the principle. \n\nI ate dinner here right after it opened and was disappointed then; I thought it was just opening pains. I guess not.

Went to Tyler Florence's Wayfare Tavern to celebrate friends' 49th wedding anniversary. Great food choices and our waiter offered recommendations. Tyler Florence happened to be on the premise and joined us at our table agreeing to photos with our party. Everything was beyond our expectation. Best night out ever!
