Château Oliveau - Chantenay-Saint-Imbert - Building
3
9.8 Excellent (47 reviews)
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Château Oliveau in Mars-sur-Allier, you'll be 14 minutes by car from Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: What makes this so special is the hosts - they are a charming Dutch couple, very friendly, very helpful. The place is a really sweet little mansion in the French country-side. The area is very quiet (the property's only neighbour is a small farm) and you can walk in the surrounding park or walk down to the river. There are currenly only 2 rooms available (3rd is being renovated as far as we understood from the owners) so there are no crowds of guests at breakfast, which is unusually lavish for a French B&B. The rooms are very spacious and the bathroom is simply enormous. Beds are cozy, there is no shortage of towels, bath robes and all the toiletries. A must visit place for a family who seeks a bit of quiet for a weekend.
Cons: You do need a car to go to a restaurant in the evening, because the property is a bit out of the way, but for us it was minor inconvenience and having no strangers around was rather a benefit.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Could not fault the visit. Excellent host.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Edith and Michel were extremely friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. On the first evening, I arrived much later than expected and very tired and Edith and Michel rose to the occasion, cooking me an excellent dinner washed down with a very agreeable red wine. Edith's food was outstanding and they even drove me over to Magny Cours race track each morning to meet my friends. Breakfast was generous and elegant and they very kindly made me a proper English Breakfast on the Sunday without being asked. My room was really large and beautifully appointed and Edith went the extra mile and popped a special reading light by my bed when she spotted that I was obviously a reader... Fabulous place - I will definitely stay there again!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Quiet area but beautiful country side.
Cons: The chateau is gorgeous. Room was excellent. Decor and each detail made our stay so special. Wish we could’ve stayed longer. Will definitely be going back!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: absolutely FABULOUS!!!! I have stayed in hotels like four seasons, ritz Carlton. let me tell you in this hotel the service and the details are out of this world..... nothing compared with ultra luxury everything was carefully taken care of, every single detail in the room was amazing. The breakfast is delicious and fresh! I went there for business with my father, i will totally come back as a tourist with my partner.
Cons: nothing, EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!!!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved the high standard of presentation and the comfort of the extra large single beds. Fantastic building complex all renovated to an exceptional standard. Close to a large out of town hypermarket complex so fuel was readily available. The family were friendly and helpful. Super accommodation for anyone in need of disabled access and appropriate accommodation. Would recommend highly.
Cons: We took a break at a quiet time of the year so there were no other guests and the restaurant in the village was closed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All told, an excellent choice
7.0 Good
Pros: Nicely converted building. Good breakfast. Choice of places to eat apart from McDonald's and Burger King near by.
Cons: Completely lacked 'BONHOMIE' . NO interaction between owners and us. Very squeaky floorboards in the bedroom. Very loud. Nowhere to hang the shower head so had to hold the shower in our hand.

Pros: Shower in bathroom was good. Jams homemade were nice.
Cons: The map does not show the exact location. It is a long way from where the map indicates down a dirt track. When we arrived 3 hours after making the booking they didn't even know we were arriving. They had not checked their email!!! They speak very little English. Very confusing to say the least. We had to wait for them to get the room ready!!! Breakfast was limited could be better variation.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our hosts were very friendly, welcoming and accommodating! Their suggestions were spot on. We enjoyed every adventure they sent us on as we did not know the area. The chateau is quiet and very private from the outside world. Breakfast was wonderful. We also enjoyed our afternoon coffee and our aperitif.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The chateau is located in the centre of Europe which makes it a good base for travelling around. It is huge, superb and very well mantained. The perfectly arranged collections, firnishing, elements of interiors are unic. There are also well equipped stables, beautiful church, other buildings and even helicopter landing area. The chateau stays in the same family since the 16 century. Jean and Marianna are the most charming and welcoming hosts. We had a delicious dinner with good wine outsides. As the chateau stands in the middle of natural surroundings, we could see daims and other animals wandering afar. There was absolute silence at night as well. The bed was very comfty and the room splendid and cosy. The delicious breakfast was served on the family silver and china in a stunning Italian room. The stay in St. Augustin was one of our best experiences in our extensive travels life and sure we'll be back!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Chateau is beautiful. Our hosts could not have been nicer. They gave us places to go and see that were just what we were looking for.
Cons: Nothing.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place and rooms, excellent beds, beautiful surroundings, quiet and peaceful, very good homemade breakfast.
Cons: Very nice hosts, but occasionally a bit more professional distance would have been appropriate.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The chateau is set in its own very quiet and tranquil grounds, with the owners' tame herd of deer grazing nearby. There is plenty of secure parking. It was verging on 40C when we arrived, and although Madame de L'Allier had kindly upgraded us to a room in the main chateau, we chose to stay in the room (La Chapelle) we had originally booked as its stone floors and dual aspect windows kept it much cooler. We had what was in effect a small gite, with a small kitchen/dining area, refrigerator and cooker. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed 3 quiet nights' stay. We had dinner on one night, which was very pleasant and good value. Our hosts were extremely friendly, helpful and obliging - even providing us with a half case of wine to take home.
Cons: It is always difficult when choosing to whether to stay in a period property or an hotel. There is, for example, no air conditioning at the chateau but the large windows do open and the property is being restored to a high standard. Breakfast was not quite to the standard we enjoyed at another chateau, which offered a choice of hot as well as cold dishes, but I suspect that if we had asked early in our stay our hosts would have done their best to meet reasonable requests. I am sure no hotel could offer the rural peace and tranquility we enjoyed at Ch. de St Augustine.

Pros: Room was basic but clean, quiet and comfortable. A great stopping point in the middle of France and a lot nicer than a characterless motorway motel if you don't mind driving off route for 10 minutes. Dinner was a real surprise. We would go back again next time we are passing just for the dinner. Breakfast was traditional continental with a good selection and decent coffee.

7.0 Good
Pros: Quirky place, old house with old accompaniments furniture etc Nice Didn't have breakfast
Cons: Internet was very slow and only occasionally reached our room
9.3 Excellent
Pros: A beautiful old French house. Was given a present of a bottle of wine and a jar of jam when we left. Very friendly staff. Sancoins market is special...lots of livestock and produce for sale and no tourists.
Cons: Nothing. You need to be quite athletic to get into the bath.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: If you would like to experience lte atmosphere of an elegant and slightly quirky rather grand French house you will love the ambiance of this place, it's like being a guest in someone's private house. Room was tastefully decorated and the bathroom well equipped. Very large and interesting Wednesday market in the town.
Cons: We were OK with it but you may or may not like sharing breakfast with the other guests around the beautiful oval dining table.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very spacious room
7.0 Good
Pros: The location is fine, close to bars and restaurants and away from the constant rumbling of trucks, so it was quiet. Room was cheap but I got what I paid for. Sorry, I can't really find much to like.
Cons: This was the first time I've arrived at a hotel and they claimed I had no reservation. Once I showed the booking.com confirmation, it was ok. The man who greeted me hardly looked like an employee - looked more like he'd walked off Cronulla beach. I had the single room on the top floor where the wifi was terrible, the carpet marked and not clean, and no blind for the window. The bed was lumpy. Didn't like the external toilet. Shower (in the room) was not great. Not the fault of the hotel but other (male) guests were really noisy and tried to break into my room during the afternoon. I had to yell at them.
7.5 Good
Pros: The history of this property is everywhere. from the rooms to the furniture. Unfortunately older furniture is often difficult to keep looking great and not as comfortable as is available now.
Cons: The bed was quite hard and the property will need AC for summer, it was very hot and difficult to cool.

Cons: weather - it snowed in October
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Lovely b&b in the middle of the village which looks simple from the outside but opens up when through the gates to reveal lovely gardens, orchard which was excellent for the dog. Hostess very friendly and we took advantage of the evening meal that was very good. It was 28.50 for three courses including wine per person. Breakfast was also excellent and included in the rate. Perfect spot as it was halfway between Channel ports and the Alps.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful. Wonderful natural bird filled garden. Magnificent round tower rooms and intact spiral staircase. Diana was a lovely host and cooked a wonderful vegetarian meal. Excellent ambience and very tasteful decorated in an understated classical style. Lovely relaxing experience. Thank you.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The ladies made for a friendly welcome, always ready to help and easy to chat to. The mansion still breathes 16th century, yet the facilities are modem and clean. The junior suite has a comfy sofa and we had a door leading directly to the courtyard and the absolutely huge garden where our dogs could roam free. There's even a public park within walking distance for a bigger walk.
Cons: The only thing we could say is that the road there, once off the highway, is not an easy ride when it's dark. There is no lighting and opposing traffic can often blind you with their beam lights. This is of course nothing the ladies at the chambres d'hôtes can help :) Just meant as a word of advise.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Relais de Chasse is peaceful, very clean with delicious meals. We were well looked after. It is easy to find and we hope to return. Our host was very attentive.
Cons: Everything perfect for us so cannot think of any improvements.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great Accommodation real French experience. Owner very kind and helpful.
Cons: Just be carefull visiting on a bank holiday very difficult to find evening meal in Moulins.

La Marronnière des Gadeaux - Sancoins - Building
18
8.6 Excellent (35 reviews)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were fabulous ! They took a lot of time to make sure we were comfortably situated, and when they learned that we had no specific plans for the following day, they suggested the nearby town of Bourges - which was a wonderful visit. We made dinner reservations at the Chambre d'hote for the next night and they served us a luxurious meal with vegetables grown in his garden and an appropriate wine selection. I would recommend this stay for my fellow Americans who would like to experience a true French Chambre d'Hote.
Cons: We liked everything, but we also realize that sharing the toilette facilities with other guests would be a cultural adjustment for many Americans. Just know that you have your own, very modern bath that you share with no one, and you have wonderful hosts that want to help you to share in the French experience.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional and very French including the wonderful food. Delightful!
Cons: Squeaky bed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wow, what a lovely property, just like in fairy tales. We’ve stayed for just one night but I wanted to stay for more. The property has a unique style and every detail is chosen carefully. The owners are so lovely and they want you to feel relaxed and comfortable. Thank you for the wonderful stay!

5.5 Okay
Pros: The location is very nice, a bit lost in the middle of nowhere, but nice. The main house is a bit run down and obviously needs some work.
Cons: Most of the tables in the park are not cleaned regularly and the staff is completely self proclaimed amateurs; when the waiter did not make us taste the wine before serving it, he explained that it was not his usual job. As they were preparing for a wedding the next day, they left all the equipment on the terrasse during the entire drinks period, and the kitchen was closed because of the wedding the next day (!).
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything good.
Cons: Very little.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Katya was anazing! All staff were sweet and helpful. Food was generous and delicious.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: We had the whole castle to ourselves! Clearly we were traveling in the off-season :). The room was very comfortable and breakfast had the full range.
Cons: There was no lift in the castle and we had chosen to use a big rollerbag so carrying it up the stairs was a bit annoying. Just be aware when you choose your bag :)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Enormous room/suite in an outbuilding very comfortable and beautifully presented. Amazing! Felt as if we were in rural France of a different era but with all modern comforts.
Cons: I liked everything!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a delightful, friendly, quiet place to stay, in a very beautiful part of the country, well off the beaten track, and yet quite accessible from the A75. The food in the restaurant is amazing - delicious, inventive without being annoying, beautifully presented, and all done with a great deal of care and love.

Pros: Quiet and fab location
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely old water mill restored in a beautiful way. Restaurant was amazing expensive but worthy of a Michigan star.
Cons: Shower entrance was difficult. Ok for small people but would be difficult if you were larger.
6.3 Good
Pros: The location of the property is very good, being quiet and peaceful and surrounded by countryside. The staff were very helpful and easy to communicate with and quick to accommodate our needs.
Cons: Standard room was not as big or as comfortable as we have been used to at about same price. Menus were limited and quality of food was overrated and very expensive. Wine was particularly expensive. This is the only hotel we have been to where the cost of the room was taken from our debit card just a few days after booking (some six months before our stay) yet we were billed again for the room when we left. Fortunately we had a copy of our debit card statement with us and were able to prove that we had already paid.
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice hotel. Room ok. Meals not as good as the promos led us to believe.
Cons: Rooms quite Spartan.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Owner & staff were very welcoming, professional & friendly without overstepping the mark & becoming too familiar. The food was excellent & lived up to its reputation.
Cons: Nothing! Enjoyed the whole experience.

Cons: Nothing to dislike
5.5 Okay
Pros: A nice terras and good helpfull personel
Cons: The bedroom is not comfortable. The bed is small, too tiny and the bedding is cheap quality. Also the bathroom. The relation between price and quality of the dinner and drinks is out of proportion. Prices are far to high for what you get.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Calm location, good swimming pool, charming house with attractive seating outside.
Cons: Bedrooms and bathroom need updating. Main course veal dry whereas the book on renaissance dish mentioned it should be “moelleux”
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful setting Good priced rooms Nice swimming pool
Cons: Unless you have built in a very special meal as part of the stay the prices in the restaurant were way too high (29 euros for a starter)
