10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was very warm and very welcoming. I sat in front of a log fire with my husband and shared a delicious red wine recommended by the owner. It will remain one of my favourite memories of this gorgeous place. My dogs were over the moon with all this place to sniff ! The owners were very friendly and extremely helpful, inviting us to join them for lunch seeing as we were so poorly prepared for our getaway. I will definitely visit this place again as it felt like home.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We liked everything - very friendly hosts who were very interesting and recommended restaurant in local town for dinner. Interesting people who showed us their arts and crafts and their metal work and woodwork work areas . The swimming pool was very welcome on a hot day on arrival, the room was good and the breakfast was excellent with home - made jams etc
Cons: We could not fault it - a little difficult to find initially in rural location but worth it !
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole place is absolutely charming... people who run it too
Cons: Loved it all - very sad to leave!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host were amazing !!!
9.4 Excellent
Pros: Amazing welcome and great information on what to see locally.
Cons: No water glasses or toiletries in room.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I usually do not usually give 5 stars in my ratings, but when I give it is because I have had an exhilarating experience. Both me and my kids loved the place. First to fifth in the middle of nowhere, perfect for resting. Second room was spectacular very well composed and with kitchen. Third pool (only thing that interested the kids) Breakfast Room, very perfect place for me (the fresh cake) I just wanted to take the whole cake. Fifth but not least for me the most important were the owners (Mr. Joao and Mrs. Celsia) who made us feel at home. Mr. Joao with suggestions to visit in the area. Mrs. Celsia with the Catalonia Conversations The kids love bow and arrow. Many thanks to mr. Joao and Mrs. Celsia are undoubtedly a highly recommended experience.
Cons: The children complained about the Internet, but by the second day they had forgotten.

Pros: I liked Everything! Our host, Rui, was attentive to every detail and was most helpful. The place is lovely, beds were comfy and all was spotlessly clean. I enjoyed being in this sweet Portuguese village.
Cons: I have nothing to add here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming hotel run by a charming family with a lot of devotion and attention to detail. A traditional portugese house recently refurbished and decorated to preserve the spirit of the past. Tasty breakfast including fresh fruit and freshly squeezed orange juice. Nearby there are two local restaurants. We had lunch in one of them and were amazed by the size of portions they serve, the quality and the price. If it were possible, I would have ranked this hotel 10+++)))
Cons: Cannot think of anything. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the hotel to anyone travelling in that region.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Rui was a very helpful host and guided us through the narrow street to The property and parking. The room was very comfortable with a balcony. There is a nice terrace and a fridge for guests to use on the first floor. Our room was on the second floor which was great for us but for someone with mobility issues it would not be great. The house was a lovingly restored family home. Lots of original character. The hotel also has a snack and bar menu. There is one restaurant in town that is open for dinner most nights. It serves chicken and pizza. Other choices would be a short drive to a neighbouring town.

Moinho do Maneio - Penamacor - Building

9.5 Excellent (223 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Moinho do Maneio in Penamacor, you'll be 10 mi (16 km) from Sierra de Gata and 19.4 mi (31.1 km) from Idanha-a-Velha. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed one night in the bubble and were lucky that the sky was completely clear and we could see a lot of stars. The bed was also very comfortable and there was even a socket inside the bubble. The luggage could easily be stored at an extra room, which also had a shower. The breakfast was really awesome, with berries and selfmade cake and all kinds of other things. The property in general is very big, with lots of extra things, like a swimming pool, a trampolin, hammocks, ... We would really have liked to stay longer :o)
Cons: The shower doesn't have a curtain or anything, so the whole bathroom area gets really wet.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful place, a great retreat. Middle of nowhere, the perfect place to be away of a busy lifestyle. Staff were friendly and breakfast was delicious.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The property is amazing and really good for relaxation and get way from the city life. It's close to really amazing places like Monsanto and Penha, so you can spend the day on those historical villages and then get back for the fireplace in your room. Breakfast is amazing! Enjoy Moinho do Maneio and the wonderful hosts!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property with space to explore, a pool and a creek to kayak and an amazing breakfast!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic and with a great location to eat it in the grounds.
Cons: Nothing - it is ideal if you want quiet and calm
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully remodeled lodges on a large, rustic site. The owners, who recently transformed the abandoned stone buildings into lovely and modern lodges, are friendly and helpful. The property is nestled among some hills, away from everything, and offers trails to hike and roam. The included breakfast is among the best we’ve ever experienced. Fresh juices and fruits, homemade jams, plus all the usual stuff — was served in a room surrounded by nature. Beautiful. We understand why people come here to stay for several days. Pentacor is about 4-5 km away.
Cons: The lodge is about a half mile off the highway, along a dusty, gravel road. Work was occurring along the road during our September visit, so I suppose the road is being improved. Driving was safe — but not the usual access to a place to stay. I’d call it a small price to pay for such a unique and memorable place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place, amazing hosts, beautiful retreat. The bubble is fantastic. You can see the stars above at night and still be warm and cozy.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Its in the middle of nowhere as expected just of a b road, no noice. The outside does not do the inside justice with high ceilings, spacious and super clean. Room also clean finished to a high standard.
Cons: A couple of improvements would be to spend a bit of attention to the rear garden with an old pickup and general old rubbish. And a vegan breakfast would be good but there was plenty of fresh fruit to compensate. overall very happy
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beauty of the country scenery, with a peach orchard and corn plantation and the warmth and kindness of the owners. Delicious breakfast with local fruit, eggs and bread. Owners invited us to walk in the orchard and pick a box of peaches to take back with us! Great and relaxing stay for the whole family.
Cons: All great.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly hosts. Large room with balcony.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We really liked to stay at this rustic small hotel. The bedroom was as expected, with no luxuries but with a great bed and view. The hosts were super friendly and helpful for us. The breakfast was also great value, fresh bread, croissants and homemade cake! We would definitely recommend anyone visiting Beira Baixa to stay in here.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very clean room. Two windows on opposite aspects gave the room a lovely flow of air and light.
Cons: No dinner option and the nearest restaurant is 30 minutes away. After 8 days the breakfast was uninteresting and had no variety. No glasses in the room... Nor kettle even offered for tea or coffee

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is perfect. There is usually street parking nearby. The hostesses are beyond sweet and go above and beyond to make sure your stay is comfortable. The breakfast is tasty and the surrounding hillside walks and strolls through the village are not to be missed.
Cons: Sorry - can't think of anything.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect, right in Monsanto. Our room had a balcony with a nice view. The inn was clean. This was a pretty basic room and bathroom but it had everything that we needed. The breakfast was simple but generous. For the price, much less than we spent in the rest of Portugal, and for the excellent location, this is a good choice. This is an amazing town and this was a good place to stay to experience it.
Cons: There were a few earwigs. The restaurants in town were closed on the night we stayed. This has nothing to do with the hotel but future guests should eat elsewhere before they come to Monsanto.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Spotless and cheerful inn. We loved exploring Monsanto. The hosts were so sweet. I broke a lamp and through google translate apologized, and offered to pay. They couldn’t have been more gracious saying no. (But we left € anyway). Special little find. Highly recommended.

Pros: White and peaceful atmosphere! Lovely staff - Ana!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our hostess Ana was professional and could not have been more helpful including recommending where to eat in nearby Idanha de Velha at the "Casa da Amoreira" run by an excellent cook Maria. It has to be the best restaurant in the area. Highly recommended. Very good quality bed linen and towels. 5 star cleanliness. Lovely old village location. Very good breakfast.
Cons: No complaints.Wish we could have stayed longer. A beautiful area and not too hot end September.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The perfect place and a dream of a historic village. If you look for a silent, well designed and spacious place, than you will be happy there. I enjoyed to walk thru the village, see the old houses and start my discoveries of Monsanto or Idanha-a-Velha from this place. And important for me: so silent and calm everything there.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: nice small hotel, directly in monsanto which is amazing, produce a little to much waste during breakfast - could be done better but apart from that a full recommendation
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Once parked, I liked everything: the calm, peaceful, cozy feel of the place, the location - quite close to the castle and easy to find, the nice room, the staff, which were very nice and helpful, the good food. Everything was even better than expected.
Cons: I didn't like the difficulty of finding a parking place on those narrow uphill crowded streets and the fact that reading when booking that "parking is available on the street" I was expecting to just find a parking place somewhere close to the place. Which was not the case, as some streets were restricted to locals only.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful inn keeper and wife. They provided personalized service which made the stay very pleasant for my wife and I.
Cons: This place does not take credit card. So, visitors should be award of this.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing apartment built into the rocks. Comfortable and unique. Park your car and take a small pack with enough for a night or two up to the top of the most incredible village we saw in Portugal. Not a long walk. Check in at the restaurant where the food is also great (you’ll have a lovely breakfast there).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was very friendly and nice. We really enjoyed talking to him! We had to leave on the early bus out of Monsanto at 7 am and he and his wife made us a lunch with water, sandwiches and fruit. I can't say enough about this place it was fantastic!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Restaurant terrace and hospitality.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We felt very welcome here. The suite was fantastic, built around the boulder, and very comfortable. It had everything we needed. The breakfast at the taverna was excellent, with a to-die-for view from our table at the top of the patio. We also ate a couple of our dinners there, while enjoying the sunset. Wonderful hosts! Monsanto should be on everyone’s itinerary.
Cons: This is not something we didn’t like, it is just to warn others that parking is further down the hill from the Taverna Lusitana, so one must walk up the hill with suitcases.

Pros: Even though it wasn't the room we wanted, the room had a really nice bed and was super clean. The breakfast was amazing! The staff super friendly. When we were by the pool mid afternoon we were presented with a some croissants, pastéis de nata and a refreshing beverage!! Overall we highly recommend Cerca Design House.
Cons: The room we were in didn't had an access to the pool. The last time we were here we had a room that had direct access to the garden and pool, plus a little balcony, but to be fair when we booked the room we might have chosen this room without knowing. Because room is near the jacuzzi we could ear the engine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A very good breakfast, fresh squeezed OJ! They work hard to accommodate dietary needs. We arrived after dark, tired and hungry. Our Hostess, Stephanie, offered all that was available food and drink. We were very pleased!
Cons: An out of the way location, not much nearby as far as services.
10.0 Excellent

Pros: Beautifully designed, brand new, the villas are super comfortable and perfect for a truly relaxing vacation.
Cons: Pets allowed, and a couple of dogs left in the villas for the day were barking non-stop...
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really nice place. Relaxing. A mix of old and modern. Staff very kind and helpful. Love the jacuzzi and all the areas of the "house".

Pros: Nice hotel in a quiet and very beautiful village. Location is fantastic and the view from the breakfast room is worth the visit. Food variety for the breakfast was not too fancy but was based in good products.
Cons: There was a noise in the early morning (around 6h30) that could be heard from our room. I believe that it was the exhaust from the kitchen and reported it to the staff.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel enjoys an unrivalled location within the small town of Monsanto. Our room was spacious and comfortable; the communal areas are clean, modern and tasteful; and the breakfast is generous; but what really makes the hotel stand out is the wonderful, professional service. We received a warm welcome and Carlos always had time to attend to us and our questions in a friendly manner..
Cons: It's a very small thing, but it was a bit tricky using the wifi, with a code that needed to be entered again every time one left and returned to the hotel, and expired every 24 hours.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location. Confort and space of the room. Good breakfast
Cons: All very good

Casa do Balcão - Alcains - Building
13
9.2 Excellent (57 reviews)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great village location. Property was fantastic with a great fire, comfortable bed and good shower.
Cons: The only slight issue we had was that the property was advertised as having WiFi throughout when in fact it didn't work in the bedroom. It was fine everywhere else but this was a problem for me due to my business requirements and is something I make sure I have for all accomodation bookings.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed at Casa do Balcao on Christmas Eve. In Portugal, Christmas Eve is spent with family sat by a fireplace. Margarida (the owner) was away on these dates and could not meet us. However, she made sure there was someone present to receive us and ensured we had everything we needed for the stay. On Christmas day, we ended up making breakfast ourselves to allow the staff to stay home with their families. All in all, a great experience and would definitely come back!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay. Our host was kind and made sure we had everything we needed. As we spoke no Portuguese, we were very pleased that our host spoke excellent English, she was able to describe the excellent meals that we had, where the ingredients came from how the biscuits were made etc as well as local information. Much of the meal was produced by the host and her husband - goat, pork, sausage, jams, cakes, biscuits. A gastronomic experience! The lady who served us breakfast and prepared some of the meals, was friendly and made us very welcome, she spoke French. The room was comfortable and very clean with air conditioning. There were spots to sit outside, but as it was so hot we only took advantage of this in the early morning and evening. There are footpaths alongside the river, but it was too hot for this in early September. We were directed to a natural swimming pool alongside the river a few miles away and here we could sit in the shade and, if we had been up for it, cool off in the pool. Thank you.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: A nice surprise. Everything you need is there. Tranquility, old charm, nice owner.
Cons: No internet - we knew that so we did not need it that evening.
7.9 Good
Pros: Lovely quite little village, wonderful hosts and a wonderful breakfast comprising of local home delights such as bread, jam & biscuits.
Cons: A little remote and felt there could of been tea & coffee making facility.
7.9 Good
Pros: Wonderful experience to stay in this small stone house in a beautiful valley sourrounded by nature. So original but still had the luxury of today's life (clean bathroom and a good shower, air condition, TV). Loved to sit in front of the fire, listening to the rain outside. The host is a wonderful lady and the breakfast is almost all made from her, the bread, the jams, the marmelete, the cakes, the lemonade... wonderful place to stay.
Cons: Booked a double room but the bed was not a full double size. Was offered another room with a bigger bed for an extra charge but didn't accept because I didn't want to pay more. When you book a double room you should get a double room
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very pleasant village, surrounded by a pine tree forest, olive trees and a river. Beautiful place to rest and go on a hike. The Kitchenette was very handy and cozy.
Cons: There were a few ants around. Couldn’t leave food out of the fridge.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We've loved the whole location, our room, the hospitality and breakfast with home made bread, cheese, jam and fresh fruit. Not to forget the small museum that shows a shift village house how it used to be. All the nice shift villages around it and the walking pathes that you can visit are really wonderful. Thank you all for giving us the possibility to have a taste of Portugal. Barblin and Jens

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is very clean. It's located in the most interesting part of town, although it's a long walk uphill back to the bus station. It's an interesting 1.4 km walk down an old Roman road, starting just outside the hostel. Vending machines in the lobby, which is perfect in such a quiet town. There is a bar/ snackbar across the square from the hostel.
Cons: It was nothing which I did not like.
