Hostel & Tatami Bar Uchikobare - Ōzu - Building
1
9.2 Excellent (130 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at The hostel & Tatami bar UCHIKOBARE in Uchiko, you'll be within a 5-minute walk of Machiya Museum and Museum of Commerce & Domestic Life. Featured amenities include laundry facilities, microwave in a common area, and refrigerator in a common area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect. Simply perfect. We even stayed one night longer, even it didn't fit in our plan at all, but it was worth it! It's beautiful, cozy, relaxing and down to earth. The staff is unbelievably helpful and you even get a little breakfast and japanese tea for free. The village is like a detox treatment and slows you down completely. The nights get a little cold due to the traditional construction of the house (bamboo and clay walls), but the staff knows that and brings you hot water bottles as a matter of course.
Cons: Nothing.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very chill vibe - hosts were very accommodating. You get the hostel accommodations (unless you take the one private room) without the dirty third world problems
Cons: Nothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The Tatami is living room is wonderful, there are bookselves you could find a lot of nice books. The hostel provides the bread and egg for breakfast. Can keep you package.
Cons: Can not find the light on&off button at Level 1
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was so nice and caring and I felt super relaxed there, even though I only stayed one night. Also very much appreciated the free breakfast and iced tea :) The neighborhood also was quiet and beautiful and the place is conveniently located for strolls or sightseeing around the old town. Hope I can stay again one day!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location in the old town Refurbished old house
9.5 Excellent
Pros: English speaking staff, try talking to them you can have a nice little chat. It's a very nice town to visit. Tranquil best describes it and away from hustle and bustle of major cities while still providing some of the charm that Kyoto has. Host were extremely nice and the local citrus mixes were good. Other travelers were kind. Place is a little small but that's expected of Japan anyways. Earplugs were provided, this is a god send for me, wish it was offered at more places.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: I felt at home , relaxed and comfortable
Cons: Needs coffee
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good!
Cons: Good!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We really enjoyed our stay at the uchikobare! The old house is perfectly renovated, a lot of nice details and use of wood makes the place incredibly comfy! All the rooms are bigger than expected (and on the booking pictures). We even got an unexpected free and yummy breakfast. The bar is also exquisite, music choice was smooth! The uchikobare is situated in the historical district and therefore near to everything we wanted to see. Our host was super friendly and showed us pictures of the renovation work. Shower and toilets and rooms all perfectly clean and well functioning! We can highly recommend this beautiful place!! Thanks again to our nice host!
Cons: -
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Master was extremely friendly and helpful, recommending sites to visit on the next day. Chatted with customers over dinner at the bar counter...introduced us to great craft beer. Food was simple but very nice.
Cons: Nothing to change or add to the facilities and/or service.

Pros: The hosts were really welcoming and attentive. It was great to spend some time to discuss with them. The food was really good. The house is very charming. Pros: The beautiful home has a calm and relaxed vibe, with a home-like feel to it as it offers space to only 3/a few guests. The hosts are most friendly and cook great meals. In the surroundings you can find many things to visit, both nature as well as small villages. Having a car is this area is recommended to take full value of this area. Guesthouse Indigoblue - Seiyo - Building
4
9.2 Excellent (50 reviews)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were amazing. A very sweet couple who run it really well. No pretensions. Decor well thought out. Loved it.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice guesthouse !!! Super cute and comfortable. The hosts are so friendly and helpful, and I loved that you have a place to read and many music instruments. You just don't have to be afraid of bugs ;)
Cons: A little bit far... But it's cool because it's quiet. A lot of stairs if you have a suitcase. And maybe the room is a little bit small. But I was completely ok with that
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Indigo Blue is one of the places, where you wish you could stay a little longer. It is a simple but comfortable guest house. The kitchen was well equipped and had various supplies/condiments to assist in making meals. The lounge was comfortable. The nearby coastline is beautiful and very good cycling (little traffic, and not too many painful hills). We also enjoyed talking with our host. Highly Recommended.
Cons: It is about 10km to the nearest supermarket or convenience store, but that is part of the charm. There are mosquitoes that come out at night, but the rooms are well equipped with mosquito nets.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff super nice and friendly - the kind of place where you will end up speaking to other travellers around the family dinner table.
Cons: steep climb on rickety steps to get there - though for some that may add to the character
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staying at Indigoblue is rather an experience. If you like meeting new people and share stories - do not hesitate to speak to the owner. He has a lot to say.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a really great stay on our way along the coast. Very cute town and house close to the sea. Thank you Rei and Kanji !
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We have ten persons. The host prepared a very special dinner for us, and a great breakfast. Very pleasant stay experience. Our large group can easily chat in the lobby. I like the atmosphere around.
Cons: If you have big luggage, it will be inconvenient.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Felt like a real Japanese experience. Nice little living room. Friendly owner
Cons: Bedbugs! Spiders and mosquitoes.. No food options on site and the closest restaurant or supermarket is 11km away, so a big no no unless you have your own car but then why stop there?! It's at the end of a steep tinny narrow allow, good luck if you have a suitcase. Finally, it feels like intruding in there house rather than a guesthouse and on the night we stayed they had a visitor, making it even more awkward and he smoked inside resulting in the room smelling tobacco.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The host is very friendly. We cooked and shared food together. The house was all built by the owner.
Cons: A bit cold in winter
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Warm and friendly hosts Rei and Kanji The fantastic view
Cons: There were no restaurants nearby

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cozy, warm and friendly host by Nori! Excellent service!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This is a really great guest house in the heart of Ozu’s old town. The owner is super kind and can give great advises. The kitchen is fully equipped so cooking is possible as well but tea and coffee are always available. The living room is also well equipped and has a kotatsu lowered to the floor. The entire room has tatami floor. The bedroom is big and very comfortable.
Cons: The shower room and the toilet room are quite tiny.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The host is a very nice man. My wife lost her phone during the way to the guest house. He helps us to contact the JR and taxi company and finally found the phone. This give a very nice feeling during our journey.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly owner. Large room. Excellent location very close to all interesting sites.
Cons: Cramped toilets.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Ozu is a quiet town, with some streets of older buildings, including the area where this hotel is located. Our room was large and comfortable, the kitchen was small but well stocked. Its about a 20 min walk from the train station. We recommend this hotel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse is on a quiet road in the middle of Ozu. It stands almost halfway between the Castle and the samurai residence that are the main attractions; it took only 15 minutes to walk to the onsen. Nori explained all that and a lot more, showing us his photos of Ozu in the past. There's a good kitchen.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Super easy check-in, VERY helpful and kind staff (who called a taxi for us to come at 6:05am), and the room was clean and bigger than we expected. I would recommend staying here for anyone looking to go to Aoshima (Cat Island). I wish we could have stayed longer!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great location and lovely host, who is also knowledgeable about the area.
Cons: I had a private room but there was no lock on the door (just a latch from the inside), which I wasn’t fully comfortable with.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable room. The owner, Nori, is extremely thoughtful and hospitable. He gave me free rides to the train station to get to Aoshima Cat Island and Osaka.
Cons: Nothing to complain about

Pros: Only a few hotel to choose from, but was very clean. Located very close to the JR Line. Uwajima Castle is walking distance from the hotel. Recommend for short stay.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nothing wrong - all functional, clean and comfortable. Nice to have a soft feather pillow! No tea/coffee in rooms but available in reception area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I drove myself there and didn’t know where the parking was. The staff (a young lady) took the extra effort to walk out from the hotel and cross the road to point out to me the car park. She stayed on until I parked my car to ensure everything was alright before heading back to the hotel. It was this extra effort by the staff which won me over. I also love the free flow coffee and tea (they had Twining tea which is a premium in my home country). I also love the free bath salts (do pick the mikan one!)
Cons: The hotel could do more promotion so that more tourists would frequent it
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was spacious. The location was central, close to the arcade and a 15 minute walk to the Castle.
Cons: NA
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Good location, friendly staff, good-sized room with comfortable bed. Was a nice place to chill in a pretty sleepy Japanese town.
Cons: The room had a bit of a funk to it, owing no doubt from the older plumbing. Wasn’t too bothersome once I opened the window and kept the bathroom door closed.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel room was clean, staff were helpful although they spoke very little English, free coffee is available in the foyer, free garage parking, and it is within 10 minutes walking distance of the castle, main temple, and waterfront.
Cons: The single room was very small, just a narrow passage between the bed and the wall. No breakfast is provided, as clearly stated in the booking.com information, so it being early on a Sunday morning, I had to buy a ham and egg sandwich (cold from the fridge) and a banana from the convenience store next door. Uwajima downtown is dead, not a soul in sight, on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings but I can't blame the hotel for that. The leaflets in the room advertising the porn TV channels rather lowered the tone of the establishment for me.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Basically this is a simple hotel with small rooms at a modest price. Parking is free in an autosilo next door. Top floor rooms have a view of the castle. Free tea and coffee all the time. Joined to a 24 hour Lawsons which is convenient for food etc, even in the rain. Easy to find and 300m from station.
Cons: Lack of breakfast option. Small size of room
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All as expected
Cons: Nothing to complain about
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Cheaper hotel but nice room high up; quiet with castle view. Free coffee at reception and convenience store connected. Short walk from station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice clean, good sized room. Good breakfast.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location just besides train station. Room was big with Japanese standard. WiFi was fast. They offered two bottles of water which was a real plus. Good choice for either a Western style or a Japanese style breakfast. Room was sound proof as I didn't noise from train at all. A.C.or heater was efficient.

Cons: The blanket wasn’t very cosy.
7.0 Good
Pros: Night manager was very helpful is suggesting a restaurant for dinner.
Cons: Room was small and could only sit on the bed to use the desk. Well worn feeling...clean but ‘tired.’
7.5 Good
Pros: Check in and check out was smooth, coin operated laundry and dryer (you can purchase detergent from reception), free parking.
Cons: I unfortunately could only book a smoking room (I don't smoke) which affected the experience. Check in is strictly from 4pm only but they will hold luggage. There may not actually be anyone at the front desk before then but there is a phone to call someone if needed. Close to the station, far (all things considered) from the "main" attractions.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The room had been newly refurbished not too long ago and had a bright, clean look. The bed was very comfortable. Even though the hotel is on a main road, there was no traffic noise after dark. The breakfast set was great, they obviously took care in preparing it. Simple and inexpensive- not fancy, but clean and a very good stay for a budget hotel. The staff were very helpful.
Cons: For the price, not much!

6.8 Good
Pros: - Hotel is OK - for one night. - Not pricy. - Close to Uwajima castle (a must see) and the main shopping street.
Cons: - Parking: you have to go around the block to park in the back of the hotel. Nothing wrong about this - you just have to figure it out. - The front desk staff is not very resourceful. They did not know how to handle a payment with a non Japanese Visa card: they could not figure out what to do when the system prompted them to ask me if I wanted to pay in my card currency or in Japanese yens. It took them 3 tries to finally tell me that my card did not work. I showed them what to do and I was able to pay.... - Walls are super thin, I could hear the guy next door snore...
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Quiet. Good location to visit castle, Date Museum and Tenshaen Gardens. I didn’t have the breakfast but I at a dinner in the 2nd floor restaurant. I liked the vegetable curry I had. The winter squash had been roasted. I also liked the shutters to block light from windows. Bed was semi double and quite firm.
Cons: Step up into washroom. I kept tripping.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good place to go around the city. Right behind the uwajima castle
Cons: The Internet was sometimes not working
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Suitcase in my room (came first in the late morning To let it and came back in evening for check in). Staff friendly. 5th floor so ok for the view, and nice sky beer terrace with buffet and open bar for a very correct price and discount for hotel travelers. At 15’ walk from the station, Konbini at 3’ and castle just in front but you have to walk to the entrance and as it is small you won’t see it from hotel. Breakfast was good. Restaurant at hotel for lunch and diner. Fridge was perfect (it was very very hot outside)!
Cons: Maybe a map in English among the leaflets? By the way I found there one for Uwajima Tour and it was nice. So thanks for that!
7.0 Good
Pros: The rooms was small but it was clean. The Japanese breastfast food was great!
