The Red Lion is very well appointed. The rooms are modern and spotlessly clean. The restaurant is excellant. None
Very helpful staff, good accomodation, relaxing surroundings and excellent food. A cut above your average inn accomodation. Do partake in the pudding club and/or chef's tasting menu when available.
Generally well run, friendly and human. Good food - standard pub food and slightly more adventurous things both well done. Nice location - good evening walks around. Nice that the bedrooms are in a separate wing away from any possible pub noise. On one occasion our room was not cleaned and the beds weren't made, apparently through an oversight. But as soon as we pointed this out, it was fixed. Though the rooms are new, there is insufficient ventilation - there is a skylight but it is too small and too low down to really provide much of a current of air, so the room overheats during the day and takes a long time to cool at night.
The restaurant and bar staff were very good and helpful. I had to leave before breakfast and they organised a breakfast tray for me the evening before. When I arrived I was told they were closed (meaning the pub) and the lady who met me when I explained I had a room booked made me feel that I was an interuption to her busy day. She showed me my room and left very quickly.
wonderful friendly staff and good food well cold showers in the morning and a late start for breakfast at 07.30 (all the guests were queueing for the excellent breakfast)
Bedroom was beautifully finished and furnished. Food delicious. Nobody available to check me in on a Sunday - this is not prominent enough on booking confirmation (it is one of last items) needs to be nearer top of the list so people are more aware of this.
We just wanted a night away with a restaurant on site - this fitted our requirements perfectly because we had a delicious meal and spent the night in a very comfortable room which was detatched from the pub therefore nice and quiet. Breakfast the next day was also good. The staff were extremely friendly. There was only 1 member of staff doing breakfast and seemed to struggle a little to serve everyone.
Good room, good facilities. Nice to have a king size bed rather than a standard double. Parking good. Nice quiet location in village and rooms separate from the pub so again nice and quiet. Not a big choice for vegetarians. Didn't like the two options available though didn't ask if they could do something else. Extra pillows would have been good and Tv reception not good for bbc1.
Nice hotel, peaceful settings, friendly staff, good food, perfect for exploring Duxford.
Wonderful staff! Great food.
The staff were Great ! The room was very new and modern and the food was top notch. The setting and the beer garden was very good also.
The staff was extremely friendly and accomodating. The common room was friendly, the food amazing, the rooms where clean and comfortable, towels changed daily, and beds turned down daily. The greatest proof of the friendly staff came from a couple who where going to the same wedding as us. Their plane was delayed, and so they got in in the middle of the night. Instead of making this a negative thing, they owner/manager was concerned that they shouldnt have to get up early for breakfast (served til 9 on the weekends) and asked them if they wanted some sandwiches made for them to pick up when they woke up. This customer service seemed to run lik the lifeblood of this B&B. Great value and great service. The only thing that would have made the stay better, would have been if the bed was 10 cm broader. But I'm a big guy, so I cant fault them for that.
quietness no plugs for electric razors in the bathroom
Very little No heating, no hot water, faulty kettle, faulty shower, shower tray overflowed
Staff were pleasant and helpful Problem with shower, would not turn off properly
Ease of Parking and location. A birthday function was in full swing on arrival with a loud disco going until midnight but reception told me they couldnt change our allocated rooms to quieter rooms. Choice of Breakfast cereals limited to coco pops. Fresh fruit would have been nice at breakfast.
This hotel had plenty of "old world" charm and was located in the small town of Royston which had some interesting history to offer, particularly its cave, as well as being surrounded by pleasant countryside near to the city of Cambridge.
Charming exterior, nice location, welcoming bar area, room clean. Overpriced for the service offered - 96 for very small room and no breakfast incl (didnt stay for breakfast as 8 x 2 seemed expensive on top of 96 for very basic room). Shower curtain in bathroom was dirty and mouldy - strange as supposedly hotel just refurbished staff were efficient but not particularly helpful or enthusiastic. Check in was somewhat confusing as not immediately obvious where reception was located Map on hotel website was unhelpful. Entrance to car park is concealed and the roads in the area are part of one way system
It was convenient for my requirements. The hotel entrance and car par was difficult to find and the hotel itself was drab and dreary inside. It smelt of cigarette smoke. There was no-one at reception when I arrived and no bell available to call anyone.
Uncomfortable, soft bed.
Unpretentious Food not great. We only had breakfast.
The period features, wonky floors, fresh clean bed linen, plenty of hot water for the showering. I couldn't fault the cleanliness of the bathroom. I thought the room was rather basic and small for a "Superior" room. I would prefer "real" milk and hot chocolate in the tea making facilities. The kettle also didn't boil but switched off too soon.
The room was warm, the bed comfortable and there was plenty of hot water though the bathrooms weren't en suite.Breakfast was served until 11 am.The position in the town for facilities is excellent. The staff did not speak good English.Ordinary tea ordered on arrival came as green tea and the waiter did not understand the difference. The tv had no remote and there were only 2 channels that were clear without interference. There was no clock or radio and only one small lamp making reading impossible.Because its on the main road and does not have double glazing one is constantly being disturbed making sleep difficult. The breakfast was cold which was a shame because the sausage mushroom and tomato were cooked well. There was no menu so you had to guess what the choices were or what full english or continental offered. The white toast and butter cam on the same plate as the cooked breakfast and there was no marmalade ,honey or any other conserve on offer. At 10.15 ish in the middle of my breakfast and on a cold November morning the french windows at the front were opened to allow delivery of the Greene King products, barrels of beer etc. It was absolutely freezing making a leisurely breakfast impossible The place was supposed to remain open until12am but at eleven thirty the staff had cashed up and buying a drink or getting a cup of tea was impossible. I was really glad I was only staying one night.
good atmosphere and entertainment in bar staff were general cheerful and helpful breakfast was of reeasonable quality shared bathroom
The staff was courteous, rooms were kept clean, the bed was comfortable and the location was very central. My stay was on a Saturday & Sunday evening when the dj & nightlife was active until after 3am (Saturday). Having a room above the bar overlooking the main street, be aware of the acoustics. The fire alarm (faulty?) also went off numerous times while there during the day. There was only one bathroom/shower available for the guests at the time (although very clean), however I believe there are plans to have another one completed soon.
The food was lovely, the staff friendly and the rooms were comfortable, well situated in Cambridge. If you want to get any sleep on at Saturday, not for you, whole building vibrates with music till 3am, students on the street till 4am, road cleaners start at 5.30am, ear plugs didn't help.
Location excellent, very central. When I asked via internet for late check out they obliged and also warned me of traffic noise so I could bring ear plugs. Needs a lick of paint and double glazing if you are to sleep properly (even with ear plugs!). Customer service was poor. Bar closed at 1125 even though it stated midnight and even getting a bottle of water was tricky. No remote for the tv. Tv channels mainly fuzzy. Staff sighed when I asked for help. Seemed annoyed. Tea order was wrong, food order slow. No-one spoke good English.
Location Shared bathrooms
Great location to City centre Whilst clean etc the experience is very basic.
Great value, central location and top brekkie. Good coureous staff. No separate entry for late return. Noisy bar but that didn't bother us on this occasion.
Room small, clean but basic. Shared Bathroom recently refurbished. Within easy walking distance of the central colleges - no worry about drink driving, taxis etc. Didn't get back to room until 0600, slept in until 1015. Came down at about 1045 to leave and was asked whether we wanted breakfast (included) - had assumed it would have finished much earlier, but being restaurant as well, was available until 1130, so pleasant surprise, including an excellent cappuccino style coffee, which I badly needed! Polite helpful cheerful European staff more than made up for any lack of more than basic facilities. No en-suite rooms and only one shared serviceable bathroom, however a second was being fitted out - a bit of a problem with a number of others probably preparing for the same night out, however in the event it wasn't a big issue at least not for us. We found it without too much difficulty, through good luck rather than good navigation (I had printed out a map) having negotiated the oneway system and roadworks. Parking in Cambridge always a potential nightmare and no hotel parking. We knew this and planned for it. Others had probably discounted this place for that reason, however in the event their loss was our gain. Unloaded in loading bay a hundred yards past hotel and then I went and parked the car about 20 minutes picturesque walk away on a residential street to west of the river for free. Didn't fancy paying ncp overnight rates! Absence of decent convenient mirrors in rooms a bit of a nuisance. I was a bit nervous about fire escape, as the place is a bit of a warren and one section of staircase was completely blocked by decorating equipment, albeit it did not appear to be part of the fire escape route. Plenty of signage, but did not appear to be illuminated, don't know whether this is required. In the event our room was quite close to an escape out onto the roof, so I was re-assured.
