About Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises offers a unique perspective, with small ships including four special expedition vessels, which carry small numbers of passengers to exotic locations that other companies never reach. All vessels in Silversea's fleet of 9 are far smaller than the giant mega ships of other cruise companies, for an intimate, luxurious experience.

Silver Muse, the newest and largest ship in the fleet, built in 2017, can carry just 691 passengers. At the other end of the scale, 1990's Silver Galapagos is an expedition ship with capacity for only 120 guests. The crew to passenger ratio is high, and all staterooms come with butler service. Voyages on the smaller expedition ships are often longer and usually more expensive than on the company's cruise ships.

Silversea prides itself on its unusual itineraries. Its ships travel all over the globe, and while shorter, more traditional cruise destinations can be booked, such as Caribbean journeys of 5 to 7 nights, the company's appeal really lies in its more exotic offerings. A 6-night river journey on Silver Muse carries guests from Manaus, Brazil, down the Amazon river to the ocean.

Silver Cloud's 21-night African expedition starts in the popular cruise destination of Cape Town, South Africa, but soon veers off the beaten track, visiting Luanda, Angola and Abidjan on the Ivory Coast. The company is also well known for its 7-night Galapagos voyages, which use smaller expedition ships to explore the remarkable archipelago.

Given the company's emphasis on exploration and visiting uncommon destinations, it is fitting that cruises usually offer a number of lectures for guests. Experts give presentations about local culture, nature, and wildlife. Furthermore, the company employs a number of professional guides and naturalists, highly qualified and able to accompany guests onshore to make shore excursions an educational opportunity.

Shore excursions are a real highlight of the Silversea experience. There are tours of culturally important buildings and historic areas, as well as options to entice nature lovers. In the Galapagos Islands, passengers can snorkel with sea lions. While in Walvis Bay, Namibia, a flight above the Sossusvlei Dunes can be enjoyed. Wildlife-spotting is also a common activity in many destinations.

The onboard experience will vary between the cruise ships and expedition ships. The cruise ships all come equipped with a pool and hot tubs, which are not always standard on the expedition vessels. However, Silver Discoverer and Silver Galapagos do both have a salon and gym. Silver Galapagos' spa is limited to a single massage room.

Cabins are generally spacious, and all come with a flat screen TV, writing desk, safe, mini-bar, hairdryer, bathroom and seating area. Most cabins have a bathtub as standard. Silversea voyages are all-inclusive, so the mini-bar is complementary, and guests who find themselves lacking something can speak to the butler.

These journeys are emphatically not designed for children. There are no child-specific facilities onboard, and while a few families travel with Silversea, they are definitely in the minority. Most passengers are mature adults with an interest in adventure. This is a popular line with retirees, who appreciate the chance to see unusual parts of the world in luxury and the quiet onboard atmosphere. Expedition ships attract a more diverse clientele, as younger adults often enjoy the physically active shore excursions on offer.

Evening entertainment is sophisticated and calm. Mature musical performances are common. On Silversea expedition ships, the night before a shore excursion, passengers are given the chance to attend a briefing to learn about the destination. Often, movies that showcase the local area are screened. The emphasis on these voyages is very much education and exploration, rather than resort-style entertainment, for a cultural cruise experience.

Cruise Ships of Silversea Cruises

Silver Wind

The Silver Wind is a member of the Silversea Cruises fleet. One of the smaller vessels, the Silver Wind has been sailing since 1995 and was extensively refurbished in 2017, for maximum passenger comfort. With Broadway-style entertainment and relaxing pool facilities, the Silver Wind is ideal for seniors, as well as families seeking a relaxing and luxurious getaway.

The ship sails a 7-night Caribbean Islands tour from San Juan in Puerto Rico, to Castries, the capital of St Lucia. There are stops at beautiful sun-drenched destinations such as St John's, Antigua, where passengers have the chance to visit the beautiful St John's Cathedral, and the Dutch colony of Philipsburg, for sensational beachfront bars and duty-free stores.

The Silver Wind has a capacity of just 296 to its crew number of 222, making for an intimate and thoroughly special experience in its yacht-like interior. There are 143 cabins, ranging from the Vista and Veranda suites, through Medallion and Silver, to the sumptuous space of the Grand and Royal suites, offering fantastic views of the surrounding ocean.

Onboard activities include a luxury pool deck with chaise lounges and whirlpools, a fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, a beauty salon with a full range of services and a spa offering relaxing facials and massages. Entertainment consists of an onboard casino, complimentary drinks and live music at the Dolce Vita bar, the Panorama and Show Lounges with unbeatable views, and a relaxing library. Four gourmet restaurants complete the elegant cruise experience.

Silver Cloud

Silver Cloud, also known as Silver Cloud Expedition, is on the small side for cruise ships. With a capacity of only 254 passengers and 223 crew, it prides itself on its ability to pull into ports off the beaten track. Exploration is the name of the game here, and adventurous passengers will love the chance to see some of the world's smaller and most unique destinations.

10 and 14-night itineraries are among those available on Silver Cloud, exploring Northern Europe and the British Isles. Unlike most cruisers, which pull into Southampton and then move on, Silver Cloud visits some of the most obscure parts of Ireland, Scotland, and even the Isle of Man.

On the 14-night ‘Northern Europe and British Isles Expedition’, passengers have the chance to explore some of Scotland's far-flung islands. There are walking tours around gorgeous, still-wild islands like Shetland and Orkney. Silver Cloud is also small enough to sail up the River Thames right into the heart of London, bringing passengers to the iconic Tower Bridge.

Silver Cloud boasts one of the highest space to passenger ratios on the seas. This all-suite ship has 146 staterooms, all with ocean views and most with private balconies. Even the smallest suites measure a comfortable 240 square feet, and all have butler service, complimentary beverages, and luxury bath products.

The onboard enrichment program includes lectures from experts, educating guests about the culture and history of the destinations. There's a pool, fitness center, and a particularly luxurious spa, with a hair salon and a range of decadent treatments on offer. There are no facilities for children or teens, and the clientele tend to be mature, adventurous couples.

Silver Discoverer

Silver Discoverer, an Expedition ship, joined the Silversea Cruises fleet in March 2014. It offers passengers the chance to travel to exciting, remote destinations. Just 338 feet long, and carrying only 116 guests, Silver Discoverer is able to slip into ports that other vessels can't reach, making it the perfect choice for the traveler who wants to combine luxury with adventure.

Silver Discoverer offers a range of itineraries, including 10 or 15-night cruises around the South Pacific, docking in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Guests can snorkel in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rock Islands, Palau, or visit the remote villages of Papua New Guinea, where locals welcome them with a traditional ceremony. In the Solomon Islands, birdwatchers will enjoy the chance to spot kingfishers, osprey, and Brahminy Kites.

There are 62 suites on the Silver Discoverer, allowing all guests to enjoy a taste of luxury, complete with butler service. All suites have a refrigerator, bar, writing desk, flat screen TV, iPod docking station, Wi-Fi, and luxury amenities, like premier bedding and bath products.

This is an expedition ship, so the onboard entertainment tends to be of the educational variety. During lectures, passengers are offered iPads to view the slides in comfort. There is a pool, a small fitness center, and a spa, with massages and hairdressing treatments on offer. Silver Discoverer does not cater for children. This is a cruise ship that’s popular with mature, discerning travelers in search of remote adventure.

Silver Galapagos

Originally built in 1990, Silver Galapagos was completely renovated and relaunched in 2013, by Silversea Cruises. At 289 feet long, this Expedition ship carries just 100 passengers and 75 crew, on luxurious voyages to the Galapagos Islands. This is a cruise ship that’s perfect for active wildlife-lovers looking for adventure.

The seven-night Galapagos Islands Expedition allows passengers to birdwatch, hike, snorkel, kayak, and more. Along the way, there’s the opportunity to spot the unique Galapagos sea lions, pelicans, reef sharks, and of course, the world-famous turtles. There are also natural wonders on the islands to explore, including the stunning lava flows at Sullivan Bay and the beautiful Rabida Cliffs.

After a busy day exploring, passengers can return to the luxury of the ship. Silversea Galapagos is an all-suite vessel, with butler service available for guests in every one of its 50 staterooms. All have a mini-bar, flat screen TV, bathrobes, safe, hair dryer, and marble-countered bathroom. The mini-bars are stocked with local snacks, like Ecuadorian chips. In the most exclusive suites, butlers deliver local canapes, such as empanadas, at 5:30pm each day.

Entertainment is low-key and focused on exploration. There are regular lectures on the Galapagos Islands and Charles Darwin, which are extremely popular and well-attended. Shore excursions take place in Zodiacs, and the knowledgeable expedition leaders ensure passengers' queries are all answered.

Although the ship has no pool, it has a mini fitness center and a beauty salon. Again, the salon uses many local Ecuadorian products in its massages and hair treatments. Silversea Galapagos does not allow passengers under six, and has no specific kid's activities or facilities, but mature teens and older children with a keen interest in nature will certainly appreciate the voyage.
