One of the staff kept saying 'no problem' when more appropriate responses would be 'very good' or 'you're welcome'
I was really very pleasantly surprised to find my room so comfortable and welcoming, and the restaurant menu so inviting. I'd certainly come again. Its location isn't perfect for north of Newbury meetings but ok if you factor in the distance.
Friendliness of the staff and their ability to adapt to changing arrival time due to delays on motorway. They could not do enough. The room was comfortable and very quite despite being near a major road. Poor breakfast choice and had to pay extra for cooked english breakfast. Then the scrambled eggs where grey and luke warm...not nice!! This detracted from an otherwise very enjoyable stay.
The Welcome It would have been helpful if the e-mail confirming my booking had specific directions as to how to find the hotel - the point to leave the A34 - then the detailed directions
Teh ambience of the rooms was nice, the meals were fantastic though a little pricy.
The quality of the room Didnt appear on the satnav and apparently it is a common problem according to the staff
Food was excellent, staff all very nice, the bed was clean & comfortable, but the bathroom was rather cramped, I dont know how very large people, would manage, Our stay fitted the bill for us, the only complaint was the bathroom,
breakfast, bathroom, flat screen tv annex room vey small, road noise
Comfortable bed The room was very small and you had to squeeze round the edge of the bed to get to the other side. No chairs to put your clothes on at all, hence on the floor overnight and stained towels and bathmat. Overall clean though.
Recently refurbished to a high standard, this hotel offers most of what a business traveller could require. A seperate bar and reception desk would have been a better idea
The hotel has a warm and relaxed atmosphere. The room was excellent and the staff couldn't have done anything better. If I was nitpicking I would ask for softer pillows!
Great staff and attention to detail, great food but just on the edge of expensive. Food as excellent as it is could perhaps be 20% less, which would make it even more delicious.
We had a short 1 night stay. Room and bathroom were large and modern (LCD TV, airconditioning, bathtube with shower). Fair breakfast, but no great. My room was not noisy, but I guess it depends on which side of the building you are. I asked for a double bed and received a twin bed instead. English breakfast was not included in the room price and costed 5 GBP. This was not obvious and I had to pay it when checking out. Very little accesories offered (just soap, shampoo, conditioner and showe cap). I would have expected more from a 4* hotel. The choice for the breakfast was also limited, I've stayed in 3* hotels in Warshaw which were much better value.
Room was nice and clean. Room close to the main road, noise!
The location is excellent, perfect surroundings and close to villages and the M40, but not affected by the motorway at all. The hotel is ultra clean and very well designed with a mix of contemporary and country feel which I thought worked really well and feels relaxing and laid back. The staff could be more professional and attentive to guests, they seemed busy, a tad scatty and preoccupied. Three different staff saw us on arrival but did not acknowledge us or say anything until we grabbed a manager and asked how to check in, it's not immediately obvious where the reception is as it's a small part of the main bar area. The only other thing would be the road the hotel is on does seem to be quite a well used road and tends to be used as a race strip. The front facing rooms could do with a better form of secondary glazing to combat this.
Attractive room good quality for the price Staff on reception have to answer phone and deal with reservations whilst you stand and wait to checkout. Need a different system as quite annoying when you are limited for time.
Everything was excellent. Fantastic staff, great atmosphere, super rooms. I would give this hotel 11/10 Absolutely nothing
Very nice hotel and room. Breakfast was lovely. Service was brilliant. Food in restaurant is very expensive with no alternative food for people without such an exquisute palete. There are three different address for the place and it took us a long time and many phone calls to find the right way. There should be a sign from the main road. There could also be blinds/or something like that, in the ground floor rooms so the windows can be open without people staring in. I also wanted to have a few treatments bit the treatment rooms were not open on the sunday or monday. If I had been told this on the saturday I would of had a treatment then. I was very dissapointed about that as that was the reason I chose this hotel. The shower in room 107 is very weak aswell.
Hotel was clean and staff courteous - nice place to stay
we enjoyed exploring the area, and old haunts, has mr wilkinson lived just up the road in his teens we did not like the fact that we did not have an opening window in our bedroom
comfortable beds, nice and quiet, well apponted. Staff not quite on the ball, breafast back-up tables swept away as we ate.(loss of second coffe!) very noisy background music (evening)/radio (morning). Shower pressure very low, it was at the top of the buuilding though.
Friendly staff Room maintenance could be better - a couple of light bulbs had failed in what was already quite a dark room
Clean comfortable rooms with nice bedlinen. Good food. No mobile phone signal within the pub or rooms and the wi-fi coverage is ver poor.
Friendly staff, quality of room, good parking, wonderful old building, good location
Rooms are a bit noisy, close to the road. They forgot to wake me up (service offered in writing)
Its was a comfortable bed and the room was pleasant enough. The hotel was quiet at night with no disturbances. Insufficient bed linen. Tea and coffee making facilities has not been renewed.
The rooms, bathroom general ambiance we were too late for breakfast
Little touches of design like pillows small baskets drink set up.Intenet link Good breakfast
Comfortable, clean, good service and local for the function we attended. N/A
Value for money Traffic noise from the main road.
The room was quaint. the restaurant presented excellent value for money & the bar was homely & comfortable.....all in all, a very pleasant stay.
Excellent breakfast - really fast service!
the staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble. I had a minor problem with the shower, as soon as I mentioned it the manager sorted it. I will be returning, the food is amazing , I didn't want to leave really.
Overall this is a very nice hotel, very comfortable and a good choice of food which was very plesant. I have stayed at this hotel several times before and would certainly recommend and return back.
Excellent Pub Uncomfortable bed
The best English breakfast I have ever had!! The airfreshener was overpowering. It was difficult to open the windows. The E.mail location was five miles to the East from the advertised location!
good value, easy to find, pleasant looks a little dated
Friendlyness of staff
The food was excellent. We had an evening meal on our first night which was very good. The full English breakfast was exceptional and so much we couldn't finish it.The staff were all really pleasant. The bedroom was adequate but the bathroom was really small. There was only space for a shower cubicle, a tiny sink and toilet. There wasn't even space to have a good towel dry in there, you had to step into the bedroom to do that! The other problem was the lighting in the room. It was really dim, very difficult when trying to dry your hair or do your make up, however the bed was really comfortable.
food, beer, quality of room n/a
Rooms 1 and 2 are situated on the first floor directly over the the main to louge bars....the noise is intolerable if you wish to have an early night, peace and quiet or dont like the tv turned up loud to drown out the noise. Please make customers aware of this when booking at this Pub/Hotel....Both these rooms are classified by the Hotel as Executive rooms....Even taking into account the age and history of the Hotel...this is a joke.Standard Doulble room...absolutely nothing 'Executive' about these rooms. And finally...the parking is a nightmare...the Hotel is situated down a cul de sac lane...its first come, first served with just 8 parking spaces in the car park....if you are planning on going out somewhere at night...you cannot return and find a parking space before the bar closes at 11.30....be warned...after 11.30 you,ll find a space...If you,re arriving after 1800 to check in...you,ll not find a parking space for onloading either...its a nightmare.
the location is perfect for exploring the local area , we like the idea of using the bull as a centre for further exploration , and will use it again in the future
Food, location and general service. Not exactly bad .... but accommodation could be cheaper - it is after all a pub, notwithstanding its history.
Our stay in the Bull Inn was short but memorable. It was a beautiful day so the yard was very busy but fun! Unfortunately we didn't eat in the restaurant so I can't comment on that, although going by the breakfast the food was very fresh and had a good choice! The rooms are nicely decorated and the bed was very comfortable! Could have done with a fan in the bedroom! Bathrooms could do with a bit of a facelift!
Welcoming, comfortable atmosphere. Accommodating and helpful staff. Great accommodation for visiting the Sonning Mill Theatre.Super breakfast ! Not suitable for anyone very disabled
Staff were friendly and responsive bathroom was nicely done nice atmosphere in the pub / restaurant good freshly cooked breakfast Not much space for guests in the pub car park (lot of it was being used for outdoor seating for the pub). We did find space in the road but we could have been unlucky if arriving later. Despite booking for two people the room was only prepared for one (towels etc) but staff were responsive in sorting. Room size was fine for one night for two people but was on the small size for more than this if staying as two people (virtually no luggage space and we were en route from a holiday so it was a bit cosy)
Great rooms in old pub and food is good, with an excellent breakfast wifi did not work
The best breakfast I've had in a hotel this year None
Friendliness of staff, good food, cottagey feel to the room, very clean.Quiet surroundings. Rather untidy area between accommodation and main Inn gave a bad first impression. A dog being allowed on the bar counter, no objection to it otherwise.
Convenient location for our purpose The initial welcome was a bit offhand and the introduction to our room and the facilities was a bit cursory. The bathroom had a fusty smell. However, the room was warm and clean and the staff we met the next morning were a disntinct improvement!
The warmeth and friendliness to the bar area. The landlord Gilbert was more than helpful the shower in the room did not control the water temperature correctly
Location, Location, Location! Staff were excellent, approachable & informative. Took care of all our needs. The owner took time to seek out our opinion. Bathroom, whilst a little on the small side, was quite adequate with the shower the highlight - very comfortable. Bed very comfortable and duvet was great to snuggle under. Peaceful, quiet and lovely location at a very affordable price. Compared to other similar accommodation, the Star Inn is close to the very top, would recommend it for anyone wishing to stay in a rural and beautiful location. Lack of storage space for two people, e.g. a chest of drawers or similar would have eased this, hanging space adequate. Not an undue issue though, wish the towel heater was switched on from the start, though once it was realized we were from a much warmer climate the offer was made immediately and apologies given.
Good food good accommadation friendly service very relaxed atmosphere Shower water pressure weak
The hotel had changed hands only three days before we arrived - and the new owners were clearly trying to get things (which had clearly slipped down) back under control swiftly. The place was a bit disappointing but, that said, they were very responsive to our requests, acknowledging our suggestions as to how they might improve to ensure that this remains a four star destination of choice. It would be nice to have cotton sheets. The plumbing needs sorting and a daily service would be good. And some local information would not go astray.
Very quiet. Few other guests. Stand-in manager was great. Sad loss when he moves on. The flush in the en-suite lavatory was pitiful, the room was in need of redecoration and the bed was past its best.
The staff were very friendly, the food was excellent and it is in a tiny quiet village. Our bathroom was very small
A warm welcome awaited us. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room was very clean and extremely comfortable with an en suite shower room and plenty of space. Our stay was excellent value for money and provided a super overnight stay for a family wedding just 10 minutes or so up the road.
I enjoyed a good lunch The shower was poor, little pressure unless the water temerature was too hot for comfort. And to finish serving breakfast at 9am on Sunday is ridiculous. We missed breakfast!
Lunch and breakfast well cooked and enjoyable, though the service was extremely slow. Notable lack of staff the probable answer to this. Helpful answers to our enquiries re routes back to civilisation. Water in bathroom not very hot and beds rather hard. We have had better accommodation in a variety of hotels over the years and feel that the Star Inn is run down and in need of more staff and greater professional management.
It was a small local gastro pub with 4 rooms upstairs. The rooms were very well appointed, comfortable, cozy and clean. The pub atmosphere was extremely friendly as it was all locals. Very nice up-scale neighborhood. The food in the restaurant was amazing and very moderately priced. Staff was so friendly and accommodating in every way. If you can get a room - grab it.
Good food and friendly and helpful staff
Lovely quiet location, staff were very friendly, helpful & flexible. Good food which was nicely presented. I might suggest more choice for breakfast (such as fish, different types of cereals/ yogurt) although staff again were very accomodating and provided full English breakfast which was scrummy.
The food was excellent. Church bell rang every fifteen minutes throughout the night! Room was very cold, even with the heating on! Chipped sink and a mixture of odd furniture in the room.
The food and friendliness of staff was excellent. The location was also very good for walking and exploring the nearby countryside. Not much to dislike really apart from some areas of the establishment looking a little tired, but this was more than made up for by the staff, food and surroundings.
Location to where l wanted to fish the room was very clean and the staff very helpful and the food was excellent. none
Friendly pub with good food in a lovely location. Excellent breakfast.
Friendliness of staff. Excellent food. Catered very well with my husband's vegan diet.Varied menu. Lovely old building.Good geographical location for tourism.
I stayed in the Chantry room - large, comfortable bed, proper linen and power shower. What more could you want? Straightforward, very nice inn with good beer in the bar and a good breakfast.
Secure parking The food.
It was very quiet and the food was tasty I thought the breakfast should have started earlier than 8am
Friendly staff, clean modern rooms No
A small but very clean room. They need someone like the hotel inspector to call and sort them out. A very poor quality breakfast served on white linen. Toast served on same plate with the breakfast. No fruit, poor choice of cereals. Carton of orange juice on table.
£40 per night bnb for two was good value for a small ensuite room. Good fry up for breakfast. Good parking. Comfy bed. Noisey. Very near train station and freight trains go all night. 18Th Party in marquee ended just after midnight but expected it to go on longer. Only Sugar Puffs for breakfast cereal, no muesli etc
The staff were excellent. They were lovely to our daughter and made us feel very welcome.
Probably the most comfortable bed on earth, really peaceful surroundings, friendly kind staff, and not a bad pint either! Breakfast was nice, good service. Would definitely stay there again.
indian restaurant on site street light directly above skylight directly above bed
It was local to where I needed to be. Some of the staff were friendly. Other staff were a bit off specially at breakfast time. Guests had to make their own tea and coffee. I had to clean hair from the plugholes, in the basin and bathroom of our room.
Cleanliness of bed linen. Towels clean and white. shower that worked very well. good breakfast. walls in the room needed the cobwebs dusted off and the curtain could do with a wash.
Nothing in pareticular The building had been converted on a budget with poor quality finishes. Access was via a steep external staircase and over a flat roof with no guard rail to the low parapet. The final exit door was secured with a dead lock that needed a key to open from the inside. None of this complies with the current building regulations.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the B&B is also a pub with good beer/ale selection so for dinner we ate in and the food was very good. Breakfast also good. Staff very helpful and courteous. Will stay there again. Easy 15-min. drive to the Park-and-Ride for frequent buses into Oxford. Well worth staying in the countryside. One comment only: Bit difficult finding the Inn as our GPS (Garmin 750 with up-to-date European maps) search did not find "Station Road" in Culham but we found the B&B using the GPS Lat/Long coordinates provided by the B&B in the Bookings.com advertisement - very clever. Nevertheless, a GPS is invaluable and a must when travelling in Britain! Using a conventional map to locate the B&B is not a problem.
None Dirty, Nothing worked, could not have a shower, because wall fixing broken. Carpet in bathroom (Who has carpet in bathroom)? Worn and smelly. Cobwebs hanging from light fittings.
Good evening meals
Very friendly staff. Excellent food. Comfortable and quiet room. None
Friendly Staff, Good Selection of food No shower in the room and a lack of hot water for the bath, so on 4 out of 7 mornings I had to have a cold bath, bed was slightly uncomfortable, poor tv reception
Good value;good food;friendly staff;comfortable rooms.
Staff friendly and helpful All areas such as stairwell, corridor, car park etc were scruffy and unkempt. The room whilst adequate was in need of a complete makeover.
Pleasant stay First floor mid corridor needs airing due to cooking smells from kitchen below. Better light blocking curtains/blinds over window (Rm 6) needed. Passing cars light the room up!
Food was excellent, staff were friendly and efficient Rooms were adequate but no hiardryer, bin or glasses in bathroom. Carpet on the stairs was worn in places.
Very convenient location. Great restaurant, bar, and beer garden. Updated bathroom and overall very clean. Pleasant staff--good wifi. Bedroom was really small. We only spent the night and left early in AM so not an issue, really, but a longer stay would be tough.
