Pros: Fabulous stay, Helen is fantastic, made us feel at home. Beautiful suite, very clean and everything you need. Breakfast was the best we’ve ever had, so much choice. Location is excellent, just 2 minutes walk to town. Very relaxing accommodation. Can’t wait to go back soon. Thank you Helen we absolutely loved our stay. Missing your gorgeous dog ‘Milo’ too.
Cons: Absolutely nothing to dislike.

Pros: Owner friendly, excellent breakfast, interesting house, lush planted courtyard,
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was immense! We opted for the full English, not realizing this wasn't just a fry up, but also fresh chopped fruit, yogurt, cereal, tea, toast and the full English fry-up. The quality of the food was fantastic, but just too much of it for someone who rarely eats breakfast. The bedding and bed was very comfortable. As someone who has disabilities and suffers with a 'princess and the pea' type syndrome, I can attest that the sheets, pillows and duvet were excellent. The mattress was mildly on the firm side for me, but still very comfortable, and we both slept comfortably. Helen the landlady was delightful, a really lovely lady and they have a small dog who runs around the house, the dog is adorable and very friendly. The whole house was completely charming, all old brick and beams, and the gardens little tranquil areas full of ferns and other greenery. I would thoroughly recommend this place and would happily stay again.
Cons: No complaints on the property or the owners themselves, I would just warn anyone staying not to go past the cottage into the private close behind it, as our friends did when picking us up, and were given a stern telling off from the neighbour for going onto 'private property' in order to turn their car around.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The spaniel!
Cons: The mattress had a bit of a dip.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast served was excellent. The variety and quantity was superb. The split level studio was nice, cozy and comfortable. All the amenities in the room were welcome. A very pleasant stay indeed.
Cons: The weather!! Nothing Helen could do about that though! Only thing was the low doorway in the kitchen, forgot once but wouldn't forget again! (I'm tall though, my own fault) On the whole nothing stood out as a dislike.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Smithy Studio is so pretty, it has everything you need and the hostess Helen was lovely. So welcoming and friendly & full of great tips for the area. Home cooked breakfast was delicious. Would thoroughly recommend Smithy Studio to anyone!

Overview Reviews
With a stay at Bulls Head in Swadlincote, you'll be within a 10-minute drive of Ashby de la Zouch Castle and Swadlincote Ski and Snowboard Centre. Free self parking is available onsite.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff. Reasonable size room and bathroom. Bottled water provided. Good pub food with generous portions and good value - £15.95 for two courses
Cons: The stairs were narrow with no handrail making it difficult when carrying luggage. The car park was tight for anything other than a small car -we decided to park in the church car park across the road. The bar was supposed to be open until 11.00 but closed early and we were asked to leave - consequently we felt we were sent to bed at 10.30! There was no menu for breakfast, no semi skimmed milk , no yogurt and no fruit. The hot meal was OK.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: beautifully cooked, but most of all served by such a kind and friendly lady
Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We really enjoyed our stay all the staff were so friendly and helpful
Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic food and welcoming hosts
Cons: This is more a restaurant pub and no where really to sit if you just want a drink. Saying that as long as you are aware of this beforehand it’s no real problem and the food was top notch.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good friendly clean place
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic room recently renovated with all the knobs and dials. Mary was great and cared for us! Breakfast huge and good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic little B&B. On arrival I was greeted with a very warm welcome and shown to my room. I ate in the hotel, 2 courses for £15.95, with the food being exceptionally good value for money.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: It was in a lovely location. Very comfortable with friendly helpful staff
Cons: My meal was only okay, but my partners was very good
7.5 Good
Pros: The staff were friendly. Good pub food, generous portions.
Cons: On arrival we were initially allocated a lower grade room than that which we had booked. When we queried this, the member of staff went to check if another room was available - fortunately it was and the problem was resolved. We enjoyed our meal but were surprised when we were told at 10.30pm that they were closing despite it saying 11pm on their site. We felt that we had effectively been told it was bedtime! We also felt that the car park was more suited to small cars and that anything larger would be better parked across the road in the church hall car park.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was excellent - made to order. We had dinner both nights we stayed and the food was excellent. Staff were very friendly.
Cons: Nothing

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Loved the spacious accommodation. We booked a two bedroom but it had space enough for six people (two in a fold out sofa). Liked it had two bathrooms, extra convenient when travelling with a child. High standard in kitchen which was fully equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, oven and microwave. Enough kitchenware to be able to do some easy cooking but were missing a measurement kit for smaller units. We also liked that the stairs had motion detector light. Don't miss to try out the door bell. Wi-fi connection stable. Would absolutely book again.
Cons: If you're visiting from an area or country with high water quality and are not accustomed to chlorinated water, don't forget to buy bottled water before your arrival. It wasn't possible to buy still bottled water at the resort. We've lived in the area before and water quality is good but maybe this resort has an own water purification system or it was something temporary. If you're picky, bring your own water for coffee/tea, toothbrushing and drinking. We were a little bit chocked about the entrance/exit road to the resort from/to A38. If you're British it won't be a surprise with short slip roads but fellow foreign travellers beware of the traffic situation.

Cons: Food in the restaurant was disappointing and over priced.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Because the property has everything you need, it makes self catering a joy ! The main bedroom is sheer luxury with the huge bed and ensuite; makes you feel special! The space in the apartment and the views were fab. And finally, the staff are so helpful and friendly that it's a home from home! Thank you
Cons: Genuinely can't think of anything. For our occasion it was perfect.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: 20 minutes from Drayton Manor (Thomas Land). Lovely, amazing place for very affordable price. Rabbits hopping around, beautiful garden, NEW construction, tv, kitchen, all perfectly maintained. Beautiful! A hidden gem!
Cons: There was no option for breakfast at the property but we hit a Toby Carver just 12 minutes away from it. No problem.

Cons: confusion wether to wait at a table and wait for service or to order at the bar, felt a little bit invisible on the first evening, staff appeared to not want to serve the us, and when we asked where do we order (as a hint that we where ready to order) they told my partner it was up to him where he ordered and then quickly walked away. Wether this was due to them being busy I am not sure, however second evening was better but I did notice they where not as busy on the second evening. Breakfast staff could not have been more attentive without being overbearing they were excellent.

Pros: Everything was excellent Staff were professional and extremely helpful. Rooms were of a high standard and bedding soft and comfortable. The spa was first class the best spa I’ve visited .The building and grounds were outstanding . Overall a lovely relaxing spa experience in lovely setting
Cons: Nothing The only positive feedback I could give to make it an even more special experience is if they built an infinity pool or included outside hot tubs
9.5 Excellent
Pros: could not believe the facilities at the hotel. fantastic spa and gardens.
Cons: an outdoor hot tub would be perfect
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The facilities around the pools were phenomenal where you were given an order to complete sections to detoxify or massage. The changing facilities were also well supplied. Dinner in the ballroom was delicious and very easy to book at the front desk. Most of the staff were helpful and were able to answer all of our questions. The gym equipment seemed fairly modern and were all easy to use. The gym was always well staffed and had cups of water available if you don’t take your own bottle or if you need a refill. The room was nicely decorated as was the rest of the hotel and it all seemed very bright and airy whilst still keeping some of its transitional style.
Cons: Unfortunately, the person who first served us at the desk was negligent. He misregistered our room key so we couldn’t get in on the second day and he didn’t explain how to reach the spa facilities. The other staff we spoke to afterwards were all much more helpful. 1 of the pools was also closed during our stay which made it quite busy at the remaining pool. Our room was also not serviced on our 2nd day despite having a please clean sign on the door for nearly 5 hours. It also didn’t have the robes and slippers in the rooms but others did seem to have these upon their arrival.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The spa is incredible
Cons: The room was very average with a tiny bath! The hotel forgot to tell us we had resort credit (bought by my mother over the phone for my birthday) and the room was ready at 3.10pm when we had been waiting from 2pm and told it would be ready at 3. It didn’t feel as special as it should have for my 30th birthday.
9.5 Excellent
Cons: Need to look more for vegan food.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Although we didn't have a nice view (looking at the parking lot) we loved our stay here. The rooms are spacious and crispy clean with good beds. You can stay in your bathrope all day, even for breakfast. Perfect to relax.
Cons: The view. Would have loved to stay at the back overlooking the gardens.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Dyson hairdryer. Yogurts at breakfast & pancake maker.

Pros: What a lovely lady who greeted us like family, fresh coffee and homemade scones on arrival . Gill couldn't do enough for us and her baking and breakfast choices were amazing !! There was fresh fruits cereals granola fresh juices fresh home baked breads a full English or any combination of and anything else different required she would make it . Fantastic. And comfort and add a fab sleep ...cannot rate this B&B high enough !
Cons: Nothing we didn't like
10.0 Excellent

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast choice outstanding (as expected from reviews). Host friendly and accommodating with recommendations for the area and eating. Although slightly out of the village, the walk to the choice of pubs was a short one.
Cons: Busy road out the front a little noisy with windows open
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very welcoming host / comfortable room / excellent breakfast
Cons: Bathroom good but would've been even better if ensuite
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic location in easy walking distance of High Force and Low Force waterfalls and the town of Middleton in Teesdale inly 3 and a bit miles away. A very short walk to the pub and its friendly atmosphere.
Cons: This sounds churlish, but we would rather have had a settee than the 2 chairs, that's our preference and understandably not everyone elses. The bedroom could possibly benefit by a little more drawer space, but we managed with what was available.

Pros: Good location for our needs. A quaint traditional hotel.
Cons: Air conditioning didn’t work very well in room. It was very hot and uncomfortable. The room itself was lovely.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room 6 at the top of the hotel was a lovely room but quite a climb being a very old building. We had a very quiet night after an excellent meal in the restaurant.
Cons: Service at breakfast was a little too relaxed.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was lovely.
Cons: The coffee at breakfast was a bit wishy washy ( according to my husband, I had tea which was fine.)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The room was full of character, clearly had a history.
Cons: Nobody had refilled the shower gel or liquid hand wash, both were empty.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: great market town to visit, the castle is an extra bonus
Cons: I’ve been visiting this place for 8 years. Every year up until this year has been great. I was shocked by how it had changed over the last year, the rooms were dirty, bathrooms were dirty, we had to ask for a toilet roll both days that we stayed. We booked a meal for both nights we stayed which was good, the barman/waiter was great on the night. But I cannot say the same for Paul and Donna, as front of house, they need to smile and greet people and make them feel welcome. We did not feel that this particular stay was our best and we shall not be returning again. Which is a shame as we have enjoyed it thus far.

Pros: Great hotel, comfortable rooms, wi-fi, iron & ironing board even a Trouser press. Staff friendly and helpful. Lovely breakfast Only down side is could do with decor updating But didn’t affect our stay 5*
Cons: Decor needs updating
6.8 Good

Cons: Stairs look like they are going to fall down. Bed very hard. No chair for dressing table. Hotel needs updating and decorating.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Little dated my comfortable , lovely staff. When I come to this area again I will certainly book in again. Fabulous value for money.
7.5 Good
Pros: Rooms comftable, breakfast was good, location was good.
Cons: Staff some times seemed, a little standoffish, didn't like the reseption eating breakfast at reseption.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Honestly? Nothing. All the aspects you could judge a hotel on were below average or unacceptable. The worst parts though had to be the cleanliness and the woeful breakfast buffet.
Cons: The breakfast, the bed, the bathroom, the shower, the hygeine, the cleanliness, the structure of the bed canopy, the decor, the TV (the remote didn't work every time).........
5.8 Okay
Cons: Road noise, dated room with wall paper falling off wall. No alcohol served in Bar.
5.8 Okay
Cons: The shower ran cold until (in the morning) I discovered the trick of turning the bath hot tap on first. It was too late to call anyone out when I arrived post midnight. Also on check out the person at reception tried to charge me for two breakfasts which I hadn’t ordered or eaten. Disappointing.

4.5 Okay
Pros: Evening food was good . breakfast resonable
Cons: 1st room smelt damp and the floor was wet, no wifi in the room. Moved to another room far better room but still no wifi
5.0 Okay
Pros: The event we attended was very good but the rest was rubbish.
Cons: The room smelt as if it had been flooded at some point and not properly dried out. The fittings in both the bedroom and shower room were worn, the pillows were like a bag of rocks - made do with the decorative cushions as it was very late when we turned in. Told reception on checking out that they were all ready for the bin and was met with a blank stare. At breakfast the table was not laid and no attempt was made to do so, staff just bought cutlery etc with each course, we never did get any napkins. Breakfast itself was mediocre.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Breakfast fine, very good location
Cons: No hot water in the morning.
4.5 Okay
Pros: The location was stunning. I love the sense of history.
Cons: Even though we had one of the hotel's best rooms, the sofa was filthy and I didn't want to sit on it. The carpet was old and dirty. The bottoms of the curtains were filthy and there was a damp and mouldy smell to the room.
6.3 Good
Pros: I loved the location and the main bullding
Cons: The scruffiness of the cottages , stained carpets , dirty Windows, Clients from main building allowed to drink outside till early hours .
4.5 Okay
Pros: Leaving. The view and setting is very nice, the hotel looks nice, it is very photogenic. The staff did try their hardest.
Cons: The rooms in the cottage, they are small, damp smelling, uncomfortable and extremely noisy. There is no porter service for a seemingly 4 star hotel. Cobwebs and signs of rot and broken and lose fittings in the cottages. There is no air con and you cannot open the windows as it opens directly onto the road into the hotel. Maybe the hotel itself is better. Service in the hotel is wanting and the selection in the bar for such a large hotel is disappointing. There is not enough staff, delays and overwhelmed staff resulting in poor service and management losing a grip on the situation. Overbooked and not enough supplies does not help.
4.3 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: The room wasn’t clean, smelt damp, lots of cobwebs and spiders, dirty floor, dirty bath and shower area. The walk way up to the room in the cottage style house was dirty, run down and looked like something from a campsite. There was a wedding on when we arrived, they were over run, couldn’t cope, drunken people swearing in the restaurant and lots of people waiting to be served. The food came out cold and after returning it 3times still came back cold, terrible service. They didn’t charge for the one meal because it was still cold after 3 attempts but it still didn’t change the fact that we were very disappointed. We were the first ones there for breakfast the next morning and there was hardly any pastries out, as I said before, the hotel was full, just put more pastries out, it’s not rocket science!
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Location was good, beautiful setting by the river. Breakfast was good.
Cons: Room was very tired, looked like it was 10 years or more past being updated. Really let down the great location, which was a shame.

4.5 Okay
Pros: Spa and gym facilities although impossible to use them
Cons: Made to feel really unwelcome. Arrived after long drive at 7.00pm evening to be to hold I HAD TO have dinner at exactly 8.30pm (no earlier and no later). The gym closed at 10.00pm and I had to eat brreakfast which didn't;t open until 7.30am and check out by 10.00am. This is impossible to use the gym and spa as well as fit in dinner and breakfast. Dinner was not included and extremely expensive. Breakfast was included although not for anything hot which was extremely expensive. No decent or good value food. No access to gym and spa with timings and compulsory early departure and really rude staff. Terrible !!
5.0 Okay
Pros: The staff were helpful
Cons: It was run down and dated
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly host, nice relaxed comfortable atmosphere
Cons: I couldnt find a fault!
7.5 Good
Pros: Lovely relaxed atmosphere
Cons: No lift to first floor which made taking bags upstairs slightly difficult
7.0 Good
Pros: Eggs and omelettes an additional charge. Nice selection of cheeses for breakfast but not meats.
Cons: Rooms are a little dated.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: After reading a couple of poor reviews on trip Adviser I was expecting to be disappointed. In fact the opposite was true. My room was lovely, the facilities and food were excellent.I loved itand will return.
Cons: Couldn't fault anything at resort but find pricing very complicated. They seem to vary by huge amounts.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The relaxing feel
Cons: The poor WiFi connection
8.3 Excellent
Pros: My Elemis massage and facial by Cristina was amazing! The best I’ve ever had. I found the checkin staff very good especially the night watchman who checked me in late who was lovely and cheerful. The cafe and restaurant staff were not as friendly or helpful. I got the impression my room service staff did not want to bring up the tray but given the lift was out of order and me being in a room about as far away from the restaurant as could be I guess this could be understood. When sitting in the relaxation area the cafe staff could be heard moaning constantly about various things which is particularly annoying when trying to get away from every day life and needing to chill. The pool and steam room area needs an urgent upgrade compared to other spas I have visited and I didn’t use that area. The grounds are very pleasant though as was the relaxation seating area with lovely comfy sofas
Cons: Cafe staff miserable and moaning between themselves very annoying listening to them whilst trying to relax in the relaxation area. It was so bad I moved to the very other end. I think they are understaffed so this definitely needs to be addressed. The girl who brought a menu to my room was lovely. The lady who delivered room service was obviously not pleased at having to do so. The tray was very heavy though and the lift out of order and this should have been done my a man as it was obvious it was too heavy for her.
7.0 Good
Pros: location beautiful and friendly staff. It really is a peacefull place to go.
Cons: more selection at breakfast. Clearer pricing for the menus as the extras seem like the actual price of the food.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: The hydro pool is great
Cons: Bed uncomfortable, squashed bugs on walls, lights didn't stay on, upstairs so loud and noisy our ceiling light shook, we called to order room service and no one called back as promised, no staff around for us to talk to when we went to reception, we'd paid extra to upgrade our room and ended up checking out at 1am because it was so bad! Have written a complaint as well.

10.0 Excellent
Cons: It was very very hot in our room and we could not open the window more than 2 inches. So we did not get much sleep. We were stood at the window trying to breath in some fresh air And get cool. Somebody must have thought we we going to jump out the window. Stupid idea.
6.3 Good
Cons: Our ordered dinner was a disaster , burnt , fish and chips ordered , garden peas and chips ok but fish was over cooked , shriveled with fish hardly visible . My bed mattress was old and springs felt under the sheets . Cobwebs hanging from the ceiling . Once we spoke to staff they were very apologetic and did not charge for the meal ( a temp chef was on duty !) the following day I informed about the mattress , I was told I’d be moved but instead a new mattress was put in the old room! Second night sleep was a100%improvement . Thanks to your staff . Overall yhe hotel looks tired and could probably do with an overhaul , which if modernized needs air conditioning especially in the upper rooms as they are very low ceilinged .
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Clean rooms, spacious and helpfull staff
3.3 Mediocre
Cons: Bug infestation. Unclean room.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff were friendly
Cons: Two people booked in room but one towel. Dinner service was appalling, very nice people but couldn’t get se4ved and then couldn’t extract a desert menu
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location for the area, it was just off the motorway. The staff were very friendly. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. There aren't many food options within walking distance (a petrol station) but the hotel food was good.
Cons: Not a massive issue but there were no complimentary biscuits. They're always appreciated.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Room was smelly like burning plastic. Was very basic crossing outside To go to room. Bed hard lousy pillows dirty carpets restaurant was busy however we're warned to book
6.8 Good
Cons: Didnt like the fact that we were kept awake until 5.30am by younger guests. Staff took no action and no reimbursement offered
4.5 Okay
Pros: The bed was comfortable
Cons: the room was so hot and the fan I was given did not work and they did not have another one, the breakfast was awful, the cooked breakfast was so dry as if it had been there for hours and a poor choice.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: A fairly typical business hotel, pretty much met expectations, clean and comfortable. Reasonable meals served in the restaurant.
Cons: There was a problem with the safe, which they seemed unable to fix. Also, though not a problem for me on my own, there was no toilet/bathroom door in my room (241)... would have been very embarrassing if I was sharing the room!
