The hosts are very welcoming and attentive without coming too close and the view from the pool is absolutely marvelous. Perhaps the lack of room climatization.
The place itself. A unique, relaxing place, in intimate contact with nature . Ideal for a weekend break away from the rush of the week. Not forgetting the kindness of the owners, Sonja and Felix. Everything perfect
Excellent place, super hosts, nice and hospitable. Sunset makes you feel you were in Africa.. Beautiful design, spacious rooms. Very good breakfast.
Simplesmente fun/fantastic! We've all the confort we need as well all the stars for free...The Hotel is in total harmony with the real alentejo.
Good value for money, very clean, excellent service, great location, well signed.Quiet and peaceful
Great location central for all this small town has to offer, its not 3 or 4 star but is good value for money No bar/restaurant
Nice clean comfortable room and added bonus of a balcony overlooking the river.
nice room, overlooking the river. close to historic centre. good air-con, vital as very hot. nice terrace and breakfast room. good breakfast. terrace not always open - a pity as it overlooked the river.
The welcome was really good and informative (about the town) and the standard of cleanliness was so high they would put many far more expensive hotels to shame. Not a single English language television news channel.
Service - even provided Gluten-Free cereals and bread for one guest. Location - Splendid views of River and castle.Staff - one member hosed down car to remove mud. One set of signs to hotel was misleading - required a turn into a one-way street.
Very clean in general both public and bedrooms. Excellent continetal breakfast. Good view over the Rio Guadiana. Some rooms have mega sized balconies. Keep your eyes open for the sand martins, if there are lots of them swooping around feeding in the air then there are lots of mosquitoes. Spray the room and go for dinner. We were there in October 2010 and the martins were feeding up for there migration to Africa.
Very nice room, sweet hotel, nice personal, very clean.
The view, the atmosphere, the service we had twin room, not double as requested
Very well run hotel in an eccentric location beside an abandoned mine but with unusually good facilities and unspoiled countryside for miles around and historic towns nearby We were on half board which was excellent value : the cooking was a bit unimaginative. Freshly squeezed orange juice in the morning which is always a good sign though!
fantastic setting, very beautiful with lovely walking and wildlife galore, helpful and friendly staff, elegant rooms, clean and comfortable, total peace and quiet, lots of interesting local history, loved it all! no cooked breakfast, possibly because we stayed midweek in low season. Very small problem as buffet was extensive and excellent.
stayed in the original part rooms good size clean rooms + bathrooms, staff very helpful and efficient
A lovely hotel in tranquil surroundings.
King size bed in superior room; good bathroom space with jacuzzi bath; quiet location. Spacious public rooms. Pleasant gardens and pool area. Poor soundproofing between rooms; no easy chair in room; restaurant prices high. No eggs for breakfast.
the hotel ambience and its surroundings, located in a beautiful place near a lagoon. Very well renovated, Nice swimming pool. The pool was not clean every day and with a full booked hotel, that matters!
Excellent Breakfast, dinner: Good Value for money. Great hospitality. Recommended
perfect hotel for relaxing, nice swimming pool, friendly staff, good restaurant, beautiful location, perfect for families with small children we only had a good experience
Interesting remote location. Modern hotel with good facilities. Genuine 4 Star, better than Pousadas we have stayed in. Pillows too hard. Machine generated coffee spoilt an otherwise excellent breakfast. Will have tea next time!
The owners/inn keepers were our hosts, warm and gracious. We enjoyed them. Gabriella's breakfast was superior compared to many others. The quiet setting w/swimming pool we enjoyed, as well as our spacious, peaceful rooms. When we drove into the property, Carlos greeting us in his warm Portuguese way. It was the highlight of my strays while in southern Europe.
Delicious pumpkin jem!! The staff is really nice!
This is so much more than a just a hotel or a pension.First of all the house is exceptionally located in the middle of the charming Alenteju landscape. The house used to be a family house now converted -with a lot of respect for the house itself- to welcome guests. When we arrived we got a 'guided tour' through the house by the friendly owners. They really know how to pamper their guests. Each morning the breakfast was a surprise. We will remember it for a long time. Rooms were spacious and very clean and nicely furnished in the style of the house. The swimming pool was very neat and big enough.A very nice place to stay, higly recommended!
I liked the hospitality, the roll of activities, the rooms, the confort, the quietness, the view nothin
Carlos and Gabriella are warm and charming hosts who really gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel at home throughout. Their little personal touches made this into a highly memorable stay for us. That is on top of the spacious and highly comfortable room and the excellent breakfast they serve. All this at a very reasonable price !
The owners have restored this old family house which now offers about five very clean and functional bedrooms. The staff could not be more helpful and we thorougherly enjoyed our one night there. Also an excellent breakfast.
Carlos & Gabrielle were very welcoming & helpful. A real home from home. Very restful & comfortable place. Absolutely nothing.
Herdade da Retorta is a great place to relax. The hosts are very friendly, the room was large and clean, the breakfast was great both in quality and quantity, the pool was the perfect place to relax. Everything was perfect.
This a wonderful place to stay. Recently converted into accommodation from a family farm. The owner and his wife are very friendly, happy to spend time explaining and talking about the are and the house and their background without being intrusive. The rooms have been refurbished very stylishly and comfortably and breakfast was wonderful with all fresh and mailny very local food. There is a pool and a samll gym and they are happy to recommend restaurants in the town ( about 2 ro 3 Ks away) that were superb. All in all I wish I had had much longer there and will have no qualms recommending friends to stay there. If I ever go back to this part of Portugal I will definitely look to stay here again. N/A
Beautiful family-owned, restored and very friendly small rural hotel with delightful hosts who cannot do enough to make your stay most enjoyable. It is in a countryside location with large grounds and a swimming pool, so perfect for those who like peace and quiet but there are places to go and see within a short drive. Gabriella and Carlos deserve to succeed as they have put a lot of time and effort into making this a place to remember! We would certainly chose to stay there again.
I enjoyed very much the quietness of the surrounding areas, the staff friendliness, and the interior design of the rooms. I did not like the fact that it was not very easy to have dinner at the hotel, since an advance warning has to be done at breakfast time, and before 11am...
Simple but tasteful accomodation situated in a small village in the middle of nowhere. Landlady takes care of each one. A project which has to be encouraged. The very noisy dog of the neighbour.
This guest house is 5 Km away from the closest city (Mertola) and its location allows a full contact with nature. Excellent for people who are looking for a calm place, away from city noise and crowds. The swimming pool has a wonderfull view over the mountains and the location of the house allows beautiful walks around. Guadiana river is only 15 mns away
(1) The nature is excellent. Being in sound of silence out in the natural park is so wonderful. To take a swim in the river is a must. (2) The service is very friendly. (3) The owner is environmental conscious. He produces the electricity he consumes which is plus.
Peaceful, confortable. I felt at home for one day. Good people with an amazing live story.
It´s in a farm whithin a 10 minute walk from the centre of Serpa, a lovely little town in the middle of Alentejo. The hosts are very nice and there´s a wonderful swimming pool where you can relax and enjoy the heat and sun. the views are amazing, watching the sunset from the verandah while sipping on a glass of Alentejo wine is exceptional. You can also hear the cicadas and the flocks of sheep from your bedroom window. The closest thing to a bucolic heaven! There is nothing worth of mention on the negative side.
We were delighted by the accomodation and the location of this hotel. We also enjoy the very good breakfasts and the kindness of the landlords. Nothing.
LOvely location with views over the planicie. Although at 3 km from centre of Serpa it is a bit too far to walk. I comment says it is only 10 minutes walk which is rediculous! Nice pool, excellent breakfast. Nice to look at the stars, so brilliant in the clear sky. No information on the time of breakfats, which was not available until after 9 on one day!
I loved the peacefulness and the helpfulness of the staff and everything was clean. The only minor complaint, there was no fridge, although we were offered the use of the owners which was extremely nice of them.
