The staff is very friendly and helpful, and offering a lot of service including daily housekeeping, washing machine/dryer use, printing of documents, fax service, phone use (all free if not used excessively), etc.. It is a quiet hotel with reliable internet at the nice cosy little room. It's simple and all I need. The only point that I can see may raise an issue is the location. It is close to downtown with great bus connections BUT the area is not safe (even though the hotel itself is). Downtown eastside is notorious for drug issues. There are homeless people everywhere around and all kinds of drug consumption can be observed. However, even though I am a solo traveling woman nobody has bothered me.
This hotel is used as a brothel/whorehouse. When we arrived, multiple prostitutes were engaged in negotiations with a large number of older, unclean men. None of the rooms had door locks. The entire place smelled of smoke. I travel for a living: this was the worst travel experience of my life. We ended up calling more than 50 places in Vancouver immediately find an alternative. The on-line help was no help. This is a drug-house/whorehouse.
Parking felt safe Bad location. Drug users all around outside
close to city core, clean, and affordable
hotel is very normal considering the 'mixed' surroundings. very good value for the money, staff is exceptionally helpful, have good breakfast and wi-fi. the shower, toilet, and sheets, and the hotel overall are clean. compared to the bunch of weird folks on W Hastings, the hotel guests are perfectly normal people. the small size of the room was not a problem for me, just enough, but wouldn't go there with kids. the carpet is old and even if cleaned, smells, some other things like the sink and bed cover are also old but ok. the bar downstairs is okay, they have some food there, the breakfast is good, but it smells like cigarettes and is dark. the street, W. Hastings is the worst in Vancouver, very depressing, do not walk there, best to take the bus - 14, 16, 20 will take you downtown and back, or a cab - only about 6-7 bucks one way. if u walk, pick a different street
This is a good budget hotel. The location is just a bit dodgy, with many homeless people on the street just a block away, though I was never approached by any of them.I used city transit and recommend you use the stop just to the east of the hotel and not the one to the west. This will avoid most of the homeless. Wi-fi was iffy in our 4th floor room. Vancouver activities are pretty expensive, so paying less for a hotel room left more money for activities. The pub in the hotel has good food and good jazz. Our two bed (singles) was tiny and the squeezed in mini-bathroom was even tinier. It had a bi-fold door that didn't shut completely. This made certain functions a little too public.
Nothing It is a hooker/gang hotel - not safe. We ran out of there
Room had private bathroom, was clean. Friendly staff. Hotel quite close to city center and waterfront. The neighborhood is really terrible. It is very sad to see all these homeless people and junkies on basically the whole of East Hastings street. However I did not feel they were dangerous.
The guy who worked the desk at night, Van, was excellent! He was incredibly welcoming and gave good tips and directions to us as first time visitors to Vancouver. His hospitality is what made me incredibly happy with our stay. The hotel is very old, it was built in 1913, but it is not run down. The rooms are small, but not uncomfortable, and for the price that we paid, worth it! Also, the shower and water pressure are strong and enjoyable. It is a very bare bones hotel, but an excellent deal as the prices are very affordable. The location is not the best, but they do have their own parking lot, parking price not included however.
It was cheap. But they charged me extra.. Still fighting that. It smelled so bad (mold), windows were super old and it was super cold (also no screen in it and it's a big window.. Dangerous), staff was cranky when I asked for another blanket, and I couldn't get wifi in the room (they told me sit by the elevator). Lame
The good: Hot guy working the counter. The brew-pub associated with the hotel is awesome and has live Jazz music. In fact this is a historic Vancouver Jazz spot. Cool old building built in 1913. Very affordable. Close to nightlife. The neighborhood is gnarly. You will have to navigate around very intoxicated people and dirty needles around this hotel.
Absolutely Nothing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Right in the middle of skid row. Rooms are terrible old run down bathrooms suck since sink is in room with you and no lighting. Expect to be panhandled going or leaving the hotel. Parking is $10 a day in Bar parking lot with a bad element around it. Worry about your car all the time parked there. I can't you how bad this place is. Unless you are coming off the street for a night.
We loved how helpful the staff was, how clean the hotel was and how secure it was despite being near a not so excellent area of the city. I would only complain about the location. But by location I mean near a not so nice area of the city. I did love how close it was to restaurants, shopping centers, stadiums, and even a liquor store!
Staff were very friendly and informative. I think because of the location and residents that also live the adjacent building they have taken appropriate steps to ensure security for guests. The neighbourhood is on the fringe of the Downtown Eastside which in terms of its proximity to Chinatown, Gastown and the rest of Downtown is great. Having said that because it is so close to the Eastside their are more undesirable people living there.
The friendly and helpful staff. The location is close to some great restaurants and brunch places. In walking distance to Gasstown and Chinatown. Close to airtrain. Lots of things to do nearby. The hotel room had a faint smell of fresh paint. It was also a little noisy Friday and Saturday night since night club half a block away. Some sketchy looking people hang out nearby since there is a clinic a block away. They didn't bother us though.
This hotel did not have anywhere near as many stars as we thought it should have. It's a fabulous, artsy hotel in a thriving metropolitan area of Vancouver. Every room is unique and there is a gallery attached that is full of original First Nations art!
The hotel's decoration is unique and there is an art gallery of 1st Nations' art as part of the first floor. It is a very relaxing and welcoming place that I will return to in future Vancouver visits. The location was a rough area just outside the historic Gastown/Chinatown districts.
It's a cultural experience Walking in the neighbour hood at night. Stay in a group
Walking distance to many attractions, public transportation, coffee, food, movies. Safe and secure parking. The hotel is a couple of doors from Health Clinic (probably free clinic judging by the patients). Although until 4:30 when clinic closes there are several shady looking characters nearby, they never bothered us.
Loved the ambiance of the place. And everyone was really nice there.
The hotel was in a pretty centralized location. It was adjacent to Chinatown and walking distance to the Gastown district and Canada Place. Did not experience any issues.
I must mention Rodrigo Pessoa the young man who served as our desk clerk and guide. He was efficient, courteous, and extremely helpful in orienting us to the area and its amenities. With his guidance we felt very comfortable and enjoyed our stay. There was nothing to dislike.
The beds were comfortable and it was a good location in Vancouver. This is definitely a hostel for people who are looking to party. This is not me. If it had been 5 years ago I probably would of enjoyed my stay more. The area it is in seems to be all about the nightlife and the bar downstairs is very loud until 2 or 3 in the morning. If wanna be a part of that scene and can sleep through that this place is for you! But if you're someone who likes to be asleep by midnight like myself you may want to seek out other options.
If you like sleeping in a 90 degree room all night with any window access, this is the place for you
Good if you're young and out and about to drink. They have a bar downstairs that's filled with energetic and sociable people and very close to the bars in Gastown.
