Excellent location in Balestrand...right on the water. Great staff. Fantastic, but pricey, buffet dinner. The view from rooms in the tower facing the water cant be beat, if in the higher floors (6-8) Tower rooms need a refresh. Tour groups can have exclusive access to the impressive historic public spaces, shutting out the independent traveler.
The view outside The room is old and the view from the room is not as expected. A bit pricey for that conditions. The receptionists seem not to know much about the town.
Magnificent idyllic location with wonderful views and historical nuances assoc. w. hotel. Fitness center was not available although advertised.
Staff friendliness, location and the old Hotel rooms that have a lot of character if compared to the cold new wing that seems out of place in that beautiful scenery. View on the Fjord is breathtaking, authentic furniture and old feel of the hotel and buliding. Having to go down to the public areas to connect on the Internet; sitting on the balcony outside the room and doing my business and email from there would have been a plus!!
Nice historical hotel, good old english style with astonish view on the fjord and surronding mountains. Really fantastic view!
Very good breakfast, good staff, beautifull building and surroundings. But I had a very limited stay, just one night.
The view and the walk thru the village. The dinner and breakfast were wonderful and the service excellent. Always had to find someone to tend the lobby bar.
It is a very special place with long history of building itself and beautiful landscape Renovation is needed.Prices are high
The history of the original hotel is extensive, the staff wonderful and the architecture, interior and exterior was fascinating. The addition in the 60's doesn't match the beauty of the original hotel.
The hotel is in a stunning location overlooking the fiord. Wonderful views from the dining room and terrace. Evening buffet prohibitively expensive and no other choice in the main dining room. Uncomfortable bed as springs in the base were broken but this was not fixed during our stay despite our complaint.
the dinner menus were excellent, especially the a la carte menu in the bar We would have preferred to stay in the old part, but this was not an electronic option
Excellent rooms with glass at the roof that you could see even the waterfalls on the mountain. Excellent restaurant with view over the fjord. Just outside there is the ferry to Flam. The girls at the reception are very friendly and willing to help with any information needed.Exvellent morning buffet.
Situation (breathtaking) Rooms have a glass ceiling (amaizing view of the fiord's mountains but the sun is your room light), so take mask to sleep during sunlight time, if required.
I arrived at the Flam Train station in the evening time when buses were not running. All of the taxi services refused to pick me up. When I called the Gudvangen Fjordtell, Olaf was quick to offer assistance. He sent one of the hotel workers to come pick me up from the train station, free of charge. The entire staff is very generous and accommodating. Also - the hotel is conveniently located at the Gudvangen port and is surrounded by beautiful landscape! I would highly recommend anyone visiting the Flam/Gudvangen area to stay at this hotel!!!
Far prefer gudvangen to other areas like Flam or Voss. Great location for kayaking, hiking or to do the main fjord four. This is the only hotel there and very small town. Tons of tour groups come through in the morning and afternoon but it is nice and quiet in the evenings. The staff was very accommodating and helpful and all spoke great English. Had a fire going in the dining hall and the euro cup on for everyone to watch. The room itself was superb. Love the Viking decor and grass covered roof. Wifi did not work Food available later in the evening (when my boat arrived) was very limited Note that it is light most of the day in Norway in the summer and the window doesn't have a covering
Breakfast is good. The tourist shop is good. The location has plenty of nature to enjoy. The room contained plenty of space for our two young children. To get to anywhere else, you will need to do some significant driving. There is not much in the direct vicinity of the hotel. We didn't have hot water for a couple of days but the problem was fixed.
Good location.....great views.....nice hiking area! No tv
the enviorment is wonderful, staying in the hotel is an unforgotable experince. but the waiters were not so welcome, and the price is too high.
Good food and service. Excellent location with comfortable rooms. No TV or phones in the rooms.
Location was excellent after doing the fjord cruise from Flam. The setting was very tranquil and beautriful. Lack of choice with evening dining facilities.
The view Not having hot water for a decent shower after a long traveling day was very disappinting. Not having hot water the next morning was even more disappointing and ennoying. The staff claimed that this is due to a Korean group who are taking long showers but even two hours after they had left there were no hot water. There was no manager in sight to complain.
Only the beautiful nature environment around the hotel. The price is too expensive for what it offer. WC water tank recharge noise every 5 minutes for all night long. Room is too lighted in the early morning due to windowed roof. Breakfast served in a different building.
Interacted with one young lady who worked desk & restaurant, but she was great with her service. Extensive breakfast. Great view from room if taking a fjord-view. Some seating outside to take in views if weather is nice. Few 100m from ferry landing so convenient for driving through west fjord country, but a distance from Balestrand proper. Good advice from hotel to visit enamel workshop on the hill. Nice to visit local artists in their workshop/home and discuss/see their art. Small rooms (ok since only a solo traveler). Bathrooms could use updating.
trees, blueberries, fjord, ferry, breakfast, browncheese bed on the sofa, expensive dinner, flies
A reasonable choice at breakfast. The hotel was very disappointing. The room was shoddy and had an unpleasant smell. The carpets on the stairs was loose and coming away from its fixings. It was very noisy and we could hear the people in the other rooms around us all night. I would not recommend this hotel at all. Not worth the money we had to pay to stay. a rip off!
Uphill to a mountain height of 1090 meters with unbelivable panoramma of the fjord.
They let us choose our room since it was not crowded. All the rooms (in front and back) and the restaurant have excellent view at the fjord.
The homemade food is excellent. The restaurant is tidy clean and spacious. The family room is big and very comfortable. The hotel makes you feel warm and comfortable.
The Stalheim was amazing! It felt genuine and historic. I imagine it is just how it has always been. The grounds were beautiful with many nearby hikes. The view was incredible and I felt so at home in the guest lounge. There were multiple fireplaces. The staff was very kind and helpful. There is a buffet that has so many nicely prepared items. My room was the cutest room I've ever stayed in in my life. Straight out of another era. I enjoyed the big antique bathtub. At some times the hotel and restaurant became very crowded with tourists that arrived on a bus. I found some of them rude at the buffet. This was not the hotel's fault. Other times, it felt like there were only a few guests. I preferred those times.
The view from this hotel is incredible! We did the Norway in a nutshell tour from Bergen to Oslo and chose to stay here and we are so happy we did. Beautiful views, lovely historic hotel and the loveliest lounge to enjoy a drink before bed. No WiFi in the rooms.
Clean rooms, although bathroom was still wet, not sure whether was from cleaning or previous guest I probably got the worst room in the hotel--had no view, rooms are very small, and beds are more like army bunks--with nice linen. Even tho wifi advertised, couldn't use it, password didn't work. Hotel did have common areas with working Internet, TV, etc, but would be nice to have that in a room. Rooms had no tv, and only 2 pieces of soap. The sink in the bathroom was very low, as designed for a child. And to my knowledge hotel had no elevator, so if u get a room on 4 th floor, good luck dragging heavy bags up there. Lucky I was traveling alone, and stayed there only 1 night. There're better hotels in town, so spend a bit more , and be comfortable
The rooms with balconies overlooking the fjord are great. Right across the street from the water. The owners are wonderful people. They are so helpful and accommodating. They helped with tour plans and tickets as well as ferry information. The breakfast was very tasty and complete. Ballestrand is a quiet, relaxing place to stay and this hotel is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the fjords The common areas are wonderful for reading, conversation, napping, or watching TV. So comfortable.
