Pros: Magali offers the option of cooking for you, and it's well worth it ... Dinner is simple and delicious, and includes nice touches such as Magali's home-baked baguettes and her urging to have second (even third!) helpings. Magali will share dinner with you, and she's a charming "dinner party" host - with very good English skills, and a great sense of humour. All room fittings - incl. bed linen, towels, etc - are of top quality - - - and it was great to find a shower that did not require one to watch Youtube video before understanding how it worked. Our stay here was one of the highlights of our time in France.
Pros: This is really a place with a character of its own, nice colours and works of art everywhere. The owner is an extremely friendly and welcoming lady. And she knows how to cook! Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, with very fresh products from the area. You would go back just for her home made wine! It is so quiet there, it is hard to believe that you are actually close to the highway.
Cons: The bedding is made from quite coarse linen, nice to look at, but less pleasant on your skin.
Pros: Fantastic host, great property with lots of character and charm. Home made bread and food made with love
Cons: A little off the beaten track if looking for a near motorway stop but worth allowing an extra 10 minutes to get there!
Pros: Getting in and feel welcomed as beeing at home - that is what it was when we arrived at Gontey. Thought as a might-be-a-good-place to stay for a night on our trip from Switzerland to Portugal the laiterie turned out to be a number-one-place. Highly recommendable!
Cons: The host was really welcoming, the room really lovely and the breakfast excellent with high quality and homemade products. Definitely recommend this place.
Pros: Fantastic location in beautiful countryside. Big comfortable bedroom and bed. Delightful and charming host, and a great breakfast.

Pros: Clean & tidy rooms, with over the average room size. Good food (keep in mind, that dinner is only 19: - 20:00), very friendly and helpful staff. Typical French "village" place, where the locals come in evening and morning to chat and drink their coffee. Breakfast buffet is "small", but you get everything to start your day.
Pros: Cute hotel and very clean and comfortable (especially for a 3 star hotel)! Staff were very friendly and accommodating. I recommend eating dinner at the hotel. Delicious food. Parking was easy outside of the hotel.
Pros: The rooms are modern and very clean. The restaurant is excellent for both breakfast and dinner (fresh local produce, meat, vegetables, and baking). The staff were fantastically pleasant and welcoming especially for a couple with little to no French.
Cons: I feel the heat a little more than most so the only small fault I would mention is the lack of A/C.
Pros: This is a really good find. A young entrepreneur Chef & his charming Wife have recently taken over this hotel. It has been completely updated from the ground up. Rooms are very modern and comfortable and the Food is quite superb. We can highly recommend this hotel and wish the couple every success with their business.
Cons: Perhaps a little of the beaten track but well worth the very slight detour.
Pros: We arrived late and it was great to see a tray of cups and tea bags. Thank you, you saved us, we had been battling to get to you through the snow, hot tea was very welcome.
Pros: Breakfast good
Cons: Lack of hospitality. Received email 2 days before check in saying hotel and restaurant were closed. Could stay in hotel but had to check in ourselves. Unable to re book else where as penalty on cancellation. Think this fact could have been conveyed at time of reservation being made as would have booked elsewhere. No other open restaurants open in village. Would definitely not stay again
Pros: Good and plentiful continental breakfast. Excellent facilities for a disabled person with very comfy and roomy bed. Very friendly helpful proprietor and wife. Would be worth doing a 50 mile detour to stay here.
Cons: Coffee machine not being closed down so early
Pros: Location, staff, room......and the evening meal was superb. Highly recommend.
Cons: Everything was superb. Cannot complain.
Pros: exellent house and very good people. Dinner was also very tasty.
Cons: my mistake. I did not read the informatiion about how to get there. but I was well informed when I called the owner.
Pros: A very warm welcome, excellent breakfast, lovely to have a pool.
Pros: + Great hospitality + wonderful swimming pool + wood floor + quiet even if not far from the auto-way
Cons: - we booked only one night
Pros: a very hard place to find
Cons: the road noise from the motor way
Pros: Lovely tranquil stay, excellent mini bar and felt very welcome
Pros: Very cozy place, clean and spacious rooms, amazing hosts, good breakfast

Pros: Excellent rooms in a japanese way - we would come again
Pros: Personally and caringly created and delivered. Would have welcomed a little more eg. fruit and dairy. Alternatively possibly offered something more in line with Japanese theme...
Pros: The establishment is quite authentically Japonese in style and features. An interesting change from the usual B & B. The futon bed was VERY comfortable! Handsome kimonos are provided for guests.
Cons: The check-in time of 17:30 is really rather late. This is a trend in travel accommodations that I find troubling. I remember when check-in times were more like 13:00-14:00 which seem to me more reasonable.
Pros: Gorgeous ambiance
Pros: Different place like a traditional Japanese hotel. Natalie, the owner, is really nice and friendly. Great location to visit Thiers, which we strongly recommend.
Located in Vollore-Ville, Château de Vollore is a 1-minute drive from Parc Naturel Regional Livradois-Forez and 8 minutes from La Catiche du Lac d'Aubusson d'Auvergne. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Friendly staff. Historical building. Fun in the pool. Local road biking excellent.
Pros: Bed very comfortable Setting stunning Pool excellent
Cons: Quite pricey for only B&B with only fairly simple breakfast
Pros: - the old castle athmospher - breakfast - views - staff
Cons: - no restaurant for a dinner
Pros: The castle was beautiful The room too. Breakfast was ok but we asked for an egg and they said they would give it to us but they didnt. My wife had a problem with her leg and he was going to give us a room up two floors with some terrible stairs so we asked for one lower and he took us to a maginifcent one in the main floor but said it was more expensive so we said no and he showed us one one floor up and we said it was ok and then he charged us much more than what we had agreed with you
Cons: What he charged us and that you cannot eat there you have to travel 20 minutes and back to get food
Pros: This castle is owned by General Lafayette's (French General who fought on the side of America during the Revolutionary War) family. Much bigger than I expected from the pictures, it's a bit off the beaten track but totally worth any trip! The castle entrance is at the end of a street in the hill town of Vollore Ville (population 600). Obear Lafayette who runs the B&B, greeted us from the large front door when we arrived in the parking area and he waved goodbye to us when we left. Our bedroom was located in the 15th Century tower and was very large and well decorated for the period. Our room included a sitting room just off the bedroom, that also enjoyed a view and a large soaking tub, and was attached to a little room next to it that housed the toilet (along with a sink). Just off the other side of the bedroom was another bathroom with a sink and shower. We climbed the stairs in the old tower (which was not a problem for us) to the 2nd floor where our bedroom had an awesome view of the landscape. There are also bedrooms on the main level where the castle boasts numerous sitting rooms that are large and beautifully decorated for the period, many paying tribute to General Lafayette. The dining room is equally large and beautiful with a table that seats 12. Breakfast was very good but all I can really remember is how eloquent the event was, and how I felt like a queen, sitting there alone with my husband at the large table, being served by Obear. We felt welcome and enjoyed the castle immensely, honored to experience a little of the history of General Lafayette, knowing the critical role he played in helping America win the American Revolutionary War. The whole experience was surreal.
Pros: Good place to stay to recharge the batteries. Very interesting history & host very helpful.
Pros: The towers and parts of the existing chateau date back to the 12th century. Such history! The room was lovely and very clean. My room had a small fridge which was nice. The staff/owner was very kind and accommodating. The best part of the place is the view of the valley and mountain range as well as splendid sunsets. All the notes and receipts are written on beautiful, fancy paper, it’s the small things that I enjoy most. The common rooms were setup like a large library and museum. The common areas were always well lit with classical music playing in the background. The living rooms/sitting areas all felt like stepping into such rich family history with all kinds of historical artifacts and family relics.
Cons: There is no food available on site, except for breakfast, and the nearest city is about 20 min drive away. There is one small, local restaurant near the castle. The backyard has so much potential and could be designed/landscaped better to drive traffic and customers to the hotel for the view alone. There are some lounge chairs and tables with umbrellas. The pool was not ready for use, it seemed that it was being cleaned.
With a stay at Villa Fani in Thiers, you'll be steps from Parc Naturel Regional Livradois-Forez and a 2-minute drive from Musee de la Coutellerie. Featured amenities include wired Internet access (surcharge), a 24-hour front desk, and multilingual staff. Free self parking is available onsite.
Cons: Parking in road. Very few staff. Almost no English spoken, when advertised. No choice in restaurant, breakfast in room. Bizarre bath in middle of bedroom.
Pros: Comfortable clean rooms. Cheery staff. Reasonable food, good wine, excellent breakfast.
Cons: A little off the beaten track. Passcodes required to open gates, rooms.
Pros: Continental breakfast good, coffee nespresso good
Cons: Nothing all was good
Pros: Huge room with big windows facing the countryside, good WiFi for streaming, street parking no problem, quiet and dark at night, comfortable bed (tho typically firm as the French seem to like it), Fridge and coffee maker in room. Fridge stocked with water and breakfast items with fresh rolls delivered to the door every morning (great idea!) House and room accessed thru a coded key pad sent to the cell phone (assuming you have one to send it to). Not a problem to walk to town (tho I wouldn't do it at night along that road)
Cons: Steep climb up to the house and then upstairs (not for handicapped or physically challenged people). No one at the house on check in. All info was passed successfully by cell phone on arrival (but you'd better have a cell phone or else). No one in the house when we wanted to check out - we were fortunate someone showed up shortly. Do pre-coordinate arrival/departure times with the staff to avoid surprises.
Pros: Efficient and very helpful
Pros: It was located right opposite the Robert David cutlery manufactory, which is one of the highlights of the town
Cons: The only possibility for washing oneself in our room was a bathtub in the middle of the room… It’s a good thing we are young and agile
Pros: The room was spacious and extremely fresh and clean. The decor embellishments in the bedroom are a little startling! Recently painted it’s mainly white in every room.
Cons: The door codes are a bit complex The menu for dinner is simple but suffice if staying one night Breakfast is in your room which is a bit antisocial
8.5 Excellent (516 reviews)

This 4-star, 31-room hotel offers the best of Auvergne in a cosy setting dedicated to the art of living. The quest for excellence continues in the hotel restaurant, run by a young inspired chef. An ideal place to enjoy lifes flavours.
Cons: No real contact with the staff.
Pros: Location, close to A89. Quiet. Good secure car park. Clean and comfortable bedroom. Food in restaurant very good if a bit pricey.
Pros: Clean and functional
Pros: Great - fully enjoyed - only problem away from town for walking therefore stay afternoon in lovely grounds
Pros: Comfortable bed
Cons: lack of internet, patronising attitude little choice of breakfast.
Pros: The owner was super friendly, very helpful and the service was perfect. Food was fantastic, the garden peaceful. Very understanding and accommodating. Can highly recommend both hotel snd restaurant and will definitely be staying here again.
Cons: Nothing to complain about.
Pros: Excellent location just off the motorway and close to Thiers centre.
Cons: Lovely people but a bit over the top on waiter service, could be toned down and left alone to enjoy the meal.
Pros: We liked the fact that there was parking at the hotel and the hotel had its own restaurant. The food was fabulous and a vast selection of cheese on the cheese trolley. There was also a great selection of wines, but we chose local ones. And they were delicious. As was the local beer. Staff were very friendly and knowledgable.
Cons: The room was a little small and dark, but it was only for one night.

Pros: Comfortable room and bed. Pleasant welcoming staff .
Cons: Hotel could do with a coat of paint on the outside just to smarten up the appearance. No car park
Pros: Staff were very helpful but could not speak a word of English. Room was clean and location would be difficult to reach without a car.
Cons: Room was OK but rather old furnishings. Expected a more modern room for the price paid.
Pros: The location and the restaurant
Cons: No elevator and the handrail on the stairs was very wobbly
Pros: Underground parking for motorcycle was a real plus
Pros: The hotel was easy to find and parking was easy too. The room was exactly as expected, clean and fine for an over night stop. The restaurant provided a very good evening meal with good service. Breakfast was also good value.
Cons: We stayed for a hot night and the was only a noisy fan to cool the room. Normally we would not have needed it but it was a sticky night. This is why I have given a good for comfort.
Pros: The location was good for visiting the old part of the city. The staff were friendly, but speak little to no English, but we had read this in another review. Hot water for the shower came fast. Breakfast option was limited, but ample for the 6 euro charge.
Cons: Old, dated hotel. Staircase and hallways are dark. Rooms are clean, but everything looks very well-worn. No coffee maker in room.
With a stay at Le Trois Mâts in Thiers, you'll be within a 5-minute walk of Parc Naturel Regional Livradois-Forez and Musee de la Coutellerie.
Pros: Our car had broken down on our way to the apartment and we needed to buy a battery charger on a Sunday. The owner and her husband were unbelievably helpful and considerate (especially also considering our son was sick on their bedding during the night!). They did everything they could to help, including coming with me to the supermarket to buy a battery charger (on a Sunday)! The apartment itself was clean and spacious with lovely views too! Highly recommended!
Pros: It's a very old bulding, in a creasy place..... similar to Valparaíso Chile, but is has it's charm and is very well atendent by her owner ….
Pros: nice clean style with just what I needed, a nice bed, shower, clean, friendly and a little different than most.
Cons: Ac would be good
Pros: Cheap. Good location in centre close to a number of restaurants.
Cons: 100 euro deposit requested on arrival in case of breakages, which remains blocked on your card for three weeks (I did not read the small print - it's in there), despite only a one night stay. First time I have ever met this in a B&B. Small bathroom on floor below bedroom, directly off breakfast room.
Pros: Location was original and pleasant
Cons: Frying pan
Pros: My husband and I came to La Coutelle. This town is crammed with everything the blacksmith and knifemaker would love. For partners not so enamoured, the medieval town offers a photo opportunity around every corner. Our gite was on the top floor of a little old house, beautifully renovated, a generous amount of space, clean as a whistle. Our hosts were friendly, and cooked us a delightful dinner on our second night. Tip: Put your clothes and toileteries for a couple of days in a backpack to save you lugging suitcases up the stairs. Parking was found just up the hill a little in a little alcove.
Cons: Beware! This is mountain goat country! Wear comfortable shoes and prepare to hike up inclines that have to be seen to be believed. For those not so energetic, take a bus the the centre in the upper village, and then bus down again. The descent is almost as challenging as the ascent. However, nothing not to like, a little preparation goes a long way.
Pros: Location fantastic, really quirky little place. Basic but good. Owners taken on board previous comments about heating and there are temporary heaters in place that kept the place lovely and warm. Breakfast was great.
Cons: Would be more accurate to describe it as a b&b than a hotel.

Pros: Staff were really great. Very helpful and interesting.
Pros: A little out of the city, but easily accessed. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast was adequate.
Pros: Smallish room, simply furnished, clean and quiet.
Pros: beds were comfortable, supermarket and mcdonalds right next door. Location was good for us
Cons: Hotel was quite tatty and seemed run down. The poor lady on reception seemed to be covering the reception and cleaning the rooms. The drinks machine was out of order
Pros: Convenience, adequate facilities & simplicity. Perfect for en Route travel.
Cons: Lack of eating facilities was relieved by Carrefour/Crescendo Restaurant & Arcade of various shops being very close by.
Pros: We didn’t expect something extraordinary from this hotel because we needed only to rest somewhere between Switzerland and Spain. The hotel was clean with air conditioning and it was enough for one night. Our special thanks to Joel at the reception as he made our stay, very nice and friendly person.
Cons: It’s not related to the hotel but the restaurants close by were just awful.
Pros: Well situated ideal for a stop over great deal with meals at Supermarket next door
Cons: Staff receptionist upon arrival was not very helpful i had booked 3 rooms and wanted to pay for all the rooms together she did 3 separate bills so I paid cash as didn’t want 3 lots of charges on my card Not impressed
Pros: The staff made our stay. The hotel itself is basic, a good place to stay if looking for a convenient, inexpensive place to spend a night while on the road between destinations. The woman at the desk was a cut above and left us feeling very happy with the Ibis Thiers

Cons: For the convenience and the money all was good.
Pros: Comfy bed
Cons: Bathroom could be updated if being picky
Pros: Excellent competitively priced hotel and facilities, with very friendly and professional staff. Convenient location
Cons: Nothing, we were very impressed
Pros: Great location, easy access. Restaurant was the usual good Campanile quality. Rooms had tea and coffee making facilities.
Pros: Location close to Autoroute. Room not large but clean. Good wifi-connection.
Cons: Weak communication. I asked by email how we get in, if we arrive after reception has closed (23:00h). There was no reply.
Pros: As always with Campaniles clean and comfortable.Staff friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good
Pros: Clean and comfortable room. Good service.
Pros: We were met with a warm smile and greeting that reflected the short but entire stay.
Pros: The hotel was very convenient for the motorway and had good secure car parking. The rooms were clean and the staff were friendly.

Free private parking is provided on site making the guest house an ideal base from which to explore the Auvergne region by car. Clermont-Ferrand is 54 km away.
Pros: It has character, quiet location good for larger groups friendly and helpful owner, good parking. Nice breakfast.
Cons: Shared bathroom, was a bit tatty. The property is quite remote far from infrastructure, e.g. a restaurant. We struggled a bit with finding it. Went right past it on the first try. A more prominent sign with its name might help.
