We had a reservation for 8:30 but a table wasn't ready when we arrived. So we had a drink at the bar. By 8:50 still no table or acknowledgement that we were waiting. At 9 we asked at the host desk, and, frankly, I think they forgot about us. They didn't seem too concerned that we still hadn't been seated so we left. Kinda hard to return to a place that shows such utter disregard for its customers. But as women in our 50s, I suspect we're not the demographic they seek.

I can't begin to count the times I have eaten at Jaleo. It is always great. We ate several of our favorites Paella, garlic shrimp, spinach and Brussels sprouts and of course great bread. (My Spanish isn't good so can't use more descriptions of the dishes. Service was fantastic. So happy to be a neighbor.

We have been coming back to Jaleo for over 7 years and it has never disappointed us. There are many great restaurants in DC to chose from but there is only 1 upscale tapas style restaurant that has the ambiance, energy, quality, and consistency that is Jaleo. In the heart of DC and only a short walk from the Verizon center it is our absolute favorite restaurant in DC. The prices reflect the quality and the service is always excellent. We highly recommend Jaleo.

Very, very disappointing. We were kept waiting for our reservation (even though there were empty tables--which remained empty). The waiter was unhelpful and disappeared as quickly as humanly possible. Other than the scallops (which were divine), the rest of the food was greasy, unattractively presented and..well, let's just say they were not having a good night and therefore we did not have a good dining experience. We don't know if this is their norm or not but we will not return to find out. The restaurant itself is beautiful; wonderful art in every nook and cranny. The bathrooms, however, were filthy. Jaleo needs some attention.

We visit Jaleo whenever we are in DC. The food was as good as ever, and they've really stepped up their game with their desserts. Prices were reasonable -- not cheap but a good value for the quality. However, service was thoughtless and neglectful. We've never had that experience before, and hope it's not indicative of a new trend.

Food and cocktails were excellent as always. Only bad thing was the volume. There were 2 tables made out of foosball tables that were extremely loud and made it difficult to hear other people. Not sure why the decision was made to use these as tables.

Service was great, but food was a bit pricey for the portions and what you got. The creamy mushroom rice was definitely the star - so good we ended up ordering two. The gambas shrimp dish was also pretty good though a bit tomato-ey. Dipping the complimentary bread into the leftover garlic chili oil is a must though. Otherwise, we also got the brussel sprout salad (not special), chicken with salsa verde (chicken itself was super moist and good but the sauce was mediocre), and the hanger steak (sauce also not memorable). I would try their paella next time as the table next to ours ordered that and it looked great.

The chicken croquettes were very good. The rest - shrimp, sliced sausage, tiny pieces of squid with white beans, vegetable dishes - were uninspired, and so, so. Nothing you'd savor or would want go back for. We finished off the meal with weak coffee. In sum, myeh. No complaints about the service, which was entirely friendly and efficient.

My husband and I came here for a birthday dinner after reading it was up for a James beard award. Not only did they put 4 courses out all together after asking not to. After complaining in a very nice way all the server did was argued with us. My husband And I have been in the fine dining business for 15 plus years. I understand it was a tapas bar, but we warned the server we wanted time and all she did was argue why she was in the right. After I said I didn't want 130$ worth of food served at the same time. Then order a glass of Chardonnay after all was said and done and I believe it was reisling because I literally had to choke it down. Absolutely disappointment. If you know good food and good service do not go here. If you are looking to be seen and spend money I am sure it's fine.

Well executed tapas. Crispy fried squid-not easy to do as squid has a lot of water content. A nice crab dish where the crab tasted fresh. Crunchy bread with a flavorful olive oil. Spanish cheese sampling with fresh tastingng blue cheese-among others, accompanied by candied fruit and honey covered bread. Quail with lentils was nicely balanced with a fruit sauce-not too strong.\nOnly a roled ham (?) cheese dish tasted a little flat.

Always interesting and tasty dishes. We were there for restaurant week, so the value was great. The waitress was adequate but could have been a little friendlier--a smile perhaps. I had to remind her to bring a glass of wine I ordered in the beginning. I had salmon and it tasted 'fishy'. When at the very end of the meal the waitress asked how everything was. To her credit she immediately reported to the manager who immediately came over to offer apologies and an appropriate compensation.

Spanish food served at a rapid pace by good, friendly staff. Quality could be improved (the ensaladilla was plain tasting; the mushroom rice (arroz cremoso de setas) could have used some seasoning, the croquetas tasted the same whether chicken or pork). I think Jose Andres is sacrificing taste for reaching a wider audience---or ....?

We look forward to Jaleo when we visit DC from New York...we were disappointed this time. Service was annoying...We needed time to deal with a very large menu of complex and interesting dishes, waiter returned every 2 minutes over 10-15 minutes to ask over and over if we were ready to order. This kept setting us back. \n\nThen, when we finally decided, he did nothing to discourage us from the amount of food we ordered, which was too much, mostly as a result of the Restaurant Week Menu having 5 courses! Some of the small plates are not so small and my wife's 5 courses plus the 3 I ordered for myself turned out to be way too much. A helpful waiter would have helped us figure it out.\n\nThe food is still unusual and delicious!

The foosball table was the best thing and only good thing about this spot. It stopped there. The food was a terrible value, yes I know it was tapas and the few things I tasted were mediocre at best. Our waiter immediately came to take a cocktail order and tried to get me to order two cocktails at once. No thanks one will do to start. Cocktail came, some tapas orders placed. Cocktail consumed, never offered another one. The food began to arrive, waitstaff was delivering items we didn't even order??? I spoke to the server who chastised me like a petulant toddler and shook his head! I've never in my life asked for a check and left before we'd finished a meal, but this was the day. All of the items, even the ones we didn't order or eat were on the check. As we left, the hostess asked what happened and we told her. She was extremely apologetic, asked for me to please leave my contact info so someone could follow up with me, took my email address in crayon (only tool she had to write with), yet I never heard from management. I don't want anything for free, but this was the strangest dining situation in the history of eating out. The best part is while I was telling the hostess what had occurred the waiter stood two feet from us listening and shaking his head still! I love to dine out. I've eaten all over the world and never had an experience this bizarre. Sorry, but I don't recommend. Their sister restaurant Oyamel across the street is much better.

Our party of two was promptly seated. We were there to enjoy dinner prior to a Caps game at Verizon Center. There was a huge stain on the cloth seat of my chair--looked as though it had been there a while. That was a bit of a turn-off. The restaurant was quite lively and loud, partly due to the party of 10 sitting near us. Since it was Restaurant Week, the place was full, with lots of activity. We reviewed the Restaurant Week menu and determined that it was too much food for us, so we ordered off the regular menu. The food was good, but the service was somewhat slow. We picked Jaleo mainly because of Jose Andres, and the fact that he pulled out of a restaurant opportunity in a Trump property. Bravo! We visited there directly after the Women's March on Washington. The food was good - the shrimp in garlic were delicious, as was the bread with tomato and the asparagus. The menu was a little light on vegetarian / pescatarian options, which is not entirely surprising given that Spain is so meat-oriented, but I'd like the menu more of there were a few more choices from that capacity. \n\nService at the table was as expected - nothing fantastic, nothing horrible. The hostess, though, tried to put me at a table that was directly next to the door to the kitchen despite there being about ten open tables to choose from. That's very odd - she needs additional training. \n\nPrices were a little high - recognizing that they serve small tapas servings, I'd have dropped each price by about $1.

I was very disappointed with my experience here. Some of the food was quite good, but some of the tapas were very salty, whereas most were undersalted. When we let our deer-in-the-headlights waiter know about how salty our potato dish was (unbearably so), he took the dish away, and let us know that he'd talk to the kitchen. He then brought the same potatoes back and said, sorry, they're just this salty, some people may not like this, and mentioned he would take it off our tab. He was very awkward about the whole situation, and, once we left the restaurant, we realized the awfully salty dish was still on our tab - and we came away having had a series of uncomfortable exchanges with the waiter. Overall, the food was okay - but the poor service made it an unpleasant experience overall.

The service was regular, and the waiter had the guts to even ask for a bigger tip!!! And he argue with me because of that!!!! The tip should be a reward for a great service, they cant assume they deserve it... when they do nothing for it... so if he is rude I have to tip him??? This really ruin the night!!! I would never recommend this place to anyone... And it was really expensive for all we had... Not worthy of it!!!!

We went there later Friday for our anniversary and had mentioned when we made our reservations. All the staff wished us a happy anniversary and we even received a anniversary treat. The food was wonderful and fresh. We had 2 servers waiting on us so we never really wanted for anything and they let us set the pace of our meal. My only complaint has nothing to do with the restaurant and had everything to do with the large table of kids by us, the restaurant set us in a privateish area that was wonderful but the parents seemed oblivious to the fact that their kids were screaming and coming over and playing right next to our table. I felt bad for the staff trying to serve and step over them as the parents just talked away. But like I said not the restaurants fault so I'm not going to fault them. They made our anniversary special and no we don't hate kids just don't want to deal with others on one of our very few kid free nights.

I NEVER leave reviews, but Jaleo is special. I think my first date there was in the late 90s, about five boyfriends ago. Is that possible? Since then my parents, siblings, and now husband have picked it over and over for graduations, reunions, engagements, baby showers, and most recently, our fifth wedding anniversary. Andres has brought so much joy and creativity to D.C. dining. Before that, fine dining was a steakhouse, French, maybe Italian. Clearly a lot has changed and that might have happened independently of Andres, but he certainly seemed to wake the town up to new possibilities. We've never had a bad experience at any of his restaurants but keep coming back to Jaleo because we have quite a history of celebrating good times there. I have my favorite tapas but go and find your own, and try 2-3 new things each time too. Thanks again Jaleo, most recently for such a lovely anniversary brunch with my husband. Happy New Year!

I have been to Jaleo 4-5 times over the last 6 years (we are not locals) and have mostly enjoyed the food and the setting. This last time was for a New Year's early seating.\n\nSome of the tapas were good, a couple were disappointing. The bread with tomato (Pan de cristal con tomate) was good, and the calamari (Puntillitas a la Andaluza) was fine, if unexceptional. One the other hand the shrimp in garlic sauce (Gambas al ajillo) was made with a brandy sauce which imparted an odd, and overpowering taste, the the shrimp. The cheese plate was a bit disappointing (served w/o bread and with small portions of cheese). \n\nOverall we enjoyed the evening, did not feel rushed and liked the wine (Finca Buenavista\nValsotillo, Tempranillo 2012).

We had a great time, the sangria (white) was excellent, and some of the food was exceptional. Pan de cristal de tomate was simple, fresh, perfect. Asparagus with romanesco, oysters gin and tonic, and fennel salad were delicious. Especially recommend the grilled boneless shoulder with mashed potatoes and red pepper confit. Our group of six also shared four desserts, including olive oil ice cream with grapefruit granita, and left not a speck. So what kept our meal from perfect scores? Croquetas were not a big hit, nor was the hamburguesa, and our server, although helpful when we asked for recommendations, seemed distracted, and we had long waits to order. The experience was fun, a little frenetic, almost but not quite five stars. And would we return? Definitely.

My fifth or sixth time at Jaleo, DC over the years. One person in my party asked for hot water with honey and it came only towards the end of the meal, even though they said in the middle of the meal that they didn't forget and they would bring it out. But they were not rude and also apologetic, so ok. My biggest gripe is that my usual favorite patatas bravas was not good. The sauce was fine but the potatoes seemed like they were sitting out for a while after cooking, so they were soft and oily and not crunchy. Oh, and the best indication of this was that the potatoes were not hot! The ham and cheese samplers and the drinks were good. We also had the chicken croquettes, bacon wrapped dates, gambas al ajillo, and olive spheres, which were all good. The desserts (flan and pan con chocolate) were delicious. We went on a Monday so I'll still come back, perhaps on a different day.

I've always been a Jose Andres fan and my wife booked the reservation without knowing that - so it was a real treat to finally try one of his restaurants and Jaleo did not disappoint. The tapas pricing is a little more than the average Tapas restaurant, but the plates were also large enough to justify it. We had the Pan Cristal - delicious bread with a savory tomato and olive oil topping, Jamon Iberico de bellota (phenomenal!), papas arrugas, and the Gambas al ajilio - all were awesome. Our waiter was very fast and courteous, he helped us pick between the many options. \n\nI also ordered a Cuba Libre and you can see that there is an attention to detail with the cocktails that you rarely see now...the waiter brought the glass to the table with a cinnamon stick, bitters, and lemon in the glass, then he poured the Rum and Mexican coke tableside. It was the best version of a Cuba Libre I've ever had! I highly recommend Jaleo and can't wait to go again on our next trip to DC.

We had a great waiter- he really understood the menu. However, the prices-- given these are small plates, are way too high. They do have a tasting menu and a pre-theater menu that is more economical, but the ENTIRE table needs to get it. Wine prices by the glass were high, as well. Everything tasted good, but I got really sick after eating there (within about 45 minutes). I am not usually someone with GI issues, but this was pretty severe. If you want tapas, fins someplace a bit more off the beaten path and you will likely have a better experience (and get to try more food/wine).

Of the three restaurants in this part of Washington under the influence of Chef Jose Andres, (Jaleo, Oyame, China Chilcano) this was my favorite. Being European and suffering a bout of nostalgia for something from the old world as I knew it, Jaleo provided the perfect antidote. I felt like I was back in Spain as we ordered several dishes -as recommended - that took me back to summer evenings in Spain and multiple plates of tapas and small dishes. This time it was a Brunch served with excellent fresh bread to back up the Huevos Estrellados - fried eggs over crisply fried potatoes with Iberico jamon, Arroz la Cubana - rice, pork, fried eggs, shrimpp sauted in oil, garlic and a hint of chili, Coca de cristal con tomate y sardinas - toasted cristal bread with fresh tomato and José Andrés canned Spanish sardines in olive oil - I was perfectly content. The food was prepared well and sat by a modern bright decor that put me in mind of a Pedro Almodovar movie the taste and feel of Spain permeated around me.

We had a wonderful experience our first time here. Unfortunately, the second time was not so good. They were out of many of the items on the menu, but ya didn't find that out until you ordered them and then tried to order something else and so on. The dishes that we did order and receive were not half as tasty as I remember. I was really disappointed. I hope it was just an off night, but it seemed like a huge decline.

.Always enjoy visits to Jaleo. As usual, we wandered around the menu and loved three out of four dishes we tried. We thought the caramelized onion specialty would have been better served warm - nice mixture of flavors, but not our favorite as a cold dish. Loved the brussels sprouts salad.

Had a negative experience at Jaleo seven years ago. Haven't darkened their door for 7 years. Decided 'what the hey?' Went back and loved it. Service excellent, food heavenly. \n\nOne small quibble. Our 2-top faced the window so we could make snarky remarks about passing tourists' outfits. But it was close enough to the door that I got an icy blast when somebody held inner and outer doors open.

I have had many dinners here. The restaurant is convenient to reach from anywhere in Downtown DC and the food is very good overall. The service is sometimes very spotty-- no rude waiters-- but because the place is very busy it is easy to lose the waiters attention. More wait staff at busy times would be a great idea here!

Tried the new prix fixe lunch menu which is an incredible value. For $20 you get two appetizer/starter, an entrée and dessert. There are several choices of starters and several choices of entrees, with 2 choices for dessert. I'll definitely do the prix fixe menu again the next time I'm there for lunch. Loved the croquetas and the flan. The scallops were cooked perfectly - not rubbery or overdone, but just cooked enough to be tender. Liked the 'cones' too. I got the one with salmon roe and salmon mousse (I think). The other was cheese and quince. The décor is a lot of fun and quirky (be sure to check out the ladies room). I've never eaten at the foosball tables because we've never had a large enough party, but maybe one of these days we will.

The service was exceptional and definitely made the dining experience pleasant. Unfortunately the lobster paella was not a soupy consistency and the rice tasted very salty to me, the only saving grace was that the lobster was cooked perfectly. The rice in the pork ribs paella seemed under cooked and also tasted very salty to me and I couldn't eat anymore after the first bite. I am no expert when it comes to paella so it's possible that's just how it is and it didn't suit my tastes. We do intend to try the paella again at another Jaleo location to confirm the saltiness off the rice.

Overall enjoyable. Highlights for me were the cocktails and service. The pan con tomate was the best food I ate. All the other dishes left me a little wanting. I think my expectations for the food may have been too high. And although I enjoyed the atmosphere and cocktails and found the service and many other details to be excellent, I just wasn't excited by the food. I would seek other dining experiences because of that.

Jaleo really doesn't need another review, least of all from me. It still holds its own, the guy at the top of the pole with everyone clamoring to get up there and knock him off. I have made several attempts to get in without a reservation and I do not recommend it. In fact, I'd call it a total waste of time and a buzzkill - it's that crazy-good and crazy-busy. But if you can come a bit early, with a reservation on the books, you'll be treated to a wonderful meal. I was. This restaurant infuriates me because I want it to be mine, where I can be a regular and go in at will. It is not that and won't be. It is highly in demand. For good reason.

The 3 of us ordered 3 small dishes, but weren't impressed with many of them: Tiny boiled potatoes were brought out first (alone, not accompanied by another dish -- we waited a while for the other 2 to come), with absolutely no seasons on them -- they were accompanied by 2 sauces, which were good, but I would have expected more to be done with the potatoes. The chorizo with mashed potatoes were good, the snapper with mashed potatoes was a VERY small portion, and overly salty. OUr fault in ordering too many potatoes -- but the mashed potatoes underneath the chorizo and fish looked and tasted exactly the same: Just mashed potatoes! No other seasonings, really. Wine selection excellent, and dessert was good, but portions overly small -- We ate the 2 desserts up in two bites. It'll probably be the last time to Jaleo -- We much prefer Oyamel, across the street. Again, I'm not into the mega-portions of the usual American restaurant...but still, I would have expected slightly bigger portions on the small plates (the bulk was mashed potatoes) and more of the highlight chorizo, fish...).

We had been to Jaleo some time ago B.D. (before dog). The food and atmosphere were always great! We loved to bring friends from out of town there because Jaleo is a really unique dining experience. After we got our dog, we had to head home after work and rarely ate out in DC.\n\nSo, on a Monday morning after we got married in the DC courthouse, we knew where we had to go: Jaleo! It was the perfect place for our special occasion ('real marriage' after almost 20 years together). We enjoyed an early lunch with our very small wedding party, just two friends.\n\nThe food was even better than we remembered! We loved the 'almuerzo rapido' menu that provided excellent options. One of our guests just wanted a grilled cheese. Since we were sharing everything, we all had a bite of the most delicious grilled cheese that I've ever eaten! And the flan!!! Magnifico!!\n\nI had not mentioned our special occasion when I made the reservations. When I did tell the waiter, he, the chef, and the manager came to our table separately to offer very sincere and warm congratulations. Believe me when I say that we greatly appreciated their kind words. \n\nJaleo is going to continue to be 'our special place.' We must go more often!! Time to get a dog sitter.

This place it not just worth the drive, it's worth the flight. One of the best meals I can remember, and we are family of foodies. It's original, surprising, amazingly well-prepared food. Our wait was a great guide who was pretty adamant (not unpleasantly so, just quite firm) about his recommendations - and he was right on the money every time. The Iberico ham plate is a must - and my wife will assert that she doesn't like pork, though she did her fair share of damage to this plate. The almond, grape gazpacho was so good that one of our party chose it for dessert. Oddly, I'd recommend that you skip the paella - not that it isn't wonderful, it is - because it takes so much of your available capacity that you can't eat all of the other wonders on this menu. Even things like the shriveled baby potatoes (not sure that's the exact name, but close) that sound ridiculous and mildly alarming were amazing - served with a red and green sauce that we have to find local access to or replicate. This chef is one of those rare individuals (like Stephan Pyles in Dallas) who just changes the landscape by virtue of his creativity and execution. Atmosphere is buzzing but not annoying and you can hear each other talk and moan. Go. Go now. Figure out a reason you need to be in D.C. that sounds better than just to eat here, and go.

Our server (Spanish lady) spoilt our whole experience at Jaleo. Firstly, she greeted us, asked what type of water we would like, gave us the menus to look at them and left - no explanation of the menu or how to go about ordering. After 10 minutes of her not coming back, we had to ask another server if he could help us by taking our order. He was very apologetic and said he couldn't but would go and find our waitress. She finally appeared (now 18 mins since sitting down with only water - not even a glass of wine/cocktail to ease the painful wait) and asked what we wanted to order. Having not been to Jaleo before, I then had to ask her how the ordering worked. She was abrupt and frankly we felt that we were annoying her by asking menu questions etc. the food however made up for the awful service experience. We never got to try the postres as we couldn't wait to leave Once we had finished our tapas.

We've eaten several times at Jaleo DC and the food is great, as it was this time, but service was terrible. In the 5:15 reservation we indicated that we had theater tickets for 7:00. After being seated we waited 13 minutes before someone brought us water. We then had to flag down a second person to get a drink menu. Our first server was simply awful, couldn't answer simple questions, and didn't know the drinks menu. After we placed our order, she brought out the second plate and, while standing next to our table, began a discussion with a co-worker--all while still holding our food-almost comical. Somehow, she then disappeared and another server came over, who was great, very knowledgeable and attentive. Maybe this one server was an aberration, not sure, but given all the wonderful DC dining options, no one should put up with sub-standard service, regardless of how good the food is; pretty disappointing.

You'll be happy and satisfied ordering any of these items!

We had a wonderful birthday dinner at Jaleo - based on research about this restaurant and its owner our party was ready for disappointment as expectations were high - our meal and experience was fantastic. We really enjoyed a variety of terrific tapas and finished with a wonderful meat paella topped off with a wonderful Ribera del Duero. The atmosphere is vibrant but not too noisy to haveb a conversation. If we didn't live 5 hours away in NYC we would eat here often!!

The food was good but the service was aloof and sloppy. Our table got jostled a couple times by passing servers without an apology. We had to ask for drink menus. We had to flag people down to put in orders. Going to the bathroom, nobody got out of the way, just kept going and brushed past you. When the wrong item was brought out, our server acted like it was our fault. The trash in the men's room was overflowing. Servers left a cabinet with glasses and cleaning supplies hanging open. It brought the entire evening down.

We were visiting the Smithsonian. We didn't know where to go to dinner. We did a query on nearby restaurants and saw that this place looked interesting. \n\nWhat an amazing find. A 'chic' place with incredible and interesting food. I had no idea what to order. The waiter was friendly and patient with us, and explained everything. \n\nAll small plates, all great. Also interesting drinks, and even a Spanish lager that was tasty. I would give this place 6 stars out of possible 5! I don't think it matters what you order. Everything was top notch. \n\nI also saw that they had a table built over a foosball machine. A family with a young boy was sitting there and having lots of fun. What a cool idea!

My friend received personalized service while I was practically ignored. I felt that I had somehow slighted the waiter. He directed all of his remarks to her. Some of their conversation revolved around wine--what would be good with the dishes she was selecting. My friend and I exchanged tastes of what we were having. I always order the ajo blanco cold creamed soup with sliced almonds, grapes, and jumbo lump crabmeat. It is such a large portion and so sweet you could have it for dinner and dessert all by itself. I always wonder why Jaleo servers bring the bread and olive oil at the same time as the food. A diner doesn't need bread when the tapas are already there. My friend ordered the sesame-encrusted tuna tartare. It was sliced into postage-stamp sized pieces and therefore easy to share. It was delicious. I would order it next time on my own. She also ordered one of the featured cheese, with a preserved apricot on the side. The apricot was very sweet and went well with the cheese, which was mild and not too salty. My friend ordered an exotic combination for dessert--two mini-scoops of ice cream topped by a thin slice of caramelized brioche, drizzled with olive oil. The two flavors were chocolate ganache and olive oil. It sounds bizarre, but the combination was sensational. Jaleo's prices are on the high side, but the value is good for the money. They were sensitive to our need to be out of there in time for an 8 p.m. curtain at a nearby theater.

And the lovely for two, in a sectioned off corner looking out the window, was perfect for an intimate meal.

Consistently very good ingredients that are well prepared. However, I would recommend only to friends who can live with very loud music that leads to loud conversation. I also would not recommend to those who are not into wine and espresso as the list of wines by the glass is brief and overpriced; a very small double espresso is not a good value at $6. So, if it is all about the food, Jaleo is a good choice.

My wife and I went to lunch at Jaleo on a Saturday. I believe that on weekdays they have lunch specials, but we didn't have that option, so we ordered off the menu.\n\nWe don't have a lot of experience with Tapas, but our server was very helpful, pointing out menu items we might or might not like and helping us with my wife's seafood allergy.\n\nEverything we had, we liked--but nothing really blew us away. The best item we ordered was the chicken croquettes, which arrived piping hot in a cool-looking glass sneaker. We also had cuts of chorizo, some nice cheese, a fennel-and-apple salad, and a few other dishes.\n\nI would like to go back to Jaleo, perhaps during a weekday or at dinner time to take another crack at the menu. By the time we asked - were told the kitchen was confused and it would take about 8 minutes more. We didn't have that long to make the theater, so she did without it... and we wanted our dessert course.. So there's a management issue there that needs to be dealt with. We asked before we ordered if we would have time for the Jaleo experience and said we needed to leave at 1:45. We were assured that we would be able to make the timing. However, at 1:40 we still hadn't received our last course. I had to go find the waiter, who was otherwise excellent, to ask what was going on. Having fond memories of a previous visit, several years ago, I was looking forward to eating here again. We ordered a bottle of wine and 2 tapas. We were expecting the wine to arrive first and then the tapas. The 2 tapas arrived and still no wine. We had to ask the person who served the food to remind the waitress about the wine. One of the tapas (wrinkled potatoes) arrived barely warm and not wrinkled at all. We sent them back and when they were returned to our table, the potatoes were warm, but the skins were burned. I prepare these myself, from the actual Jose Andres recipe, and the potatoes that I was served were not up to par. The shrimp in garlic sauce was OK, but again, barely warm. We did not send this back. The squid that we wanted to order was not available, and according to our waitress, had not been available for several months. We opted for the octopus, which again, is a dish that I often order, so it is not something new for me. This particular dish was average at best. We wanted to order another tapa, but in light of the previous three, we decided not to and asked for the check. Perhaps it was an off night, or perhaps my memories had been enhanced over the years, but my experience at Jaleo fell short of my expectations.

We ordered the Jaleo experience brunch in order to try as much as we could and I was disappointed at the lackluster service - we weren't given much description of each course and a few dishes were even cleared when we were still working on them. It just didn't live up to my expectations of a Jose Andres restaurant. The management salvaged it for us by printing out menus that contained the item descriptions when we inquired, including the items we added to our order. We are both food lovers from out of town who made a special trip for this meal, it's just unfortunate that we didn't get a server as excited about the menu as we were. Or perhaps we should have booked a dinner reservation instead - we just had limited time available where we were both free.

After we finished I suddenly felt very ill. Thinking my blood sugar was too low I asked for a glass of orange juice. That was not the problem. As soon as I reached the restroom my dinner left me. We ordered chicken paella which was horrible. No taste to it and there was very little chicken. \nAlso, the restaurant needs to label its bathrooms better so it's clear which is for men and which for women. I found a man in the ladies bathroom which was very frightening. A waitress came in and was just as startled as I was to find him there. Will never return. Too many other really good restaurants in DC.

I love the Jaleo vibe (the DC restaurant, not so much the one in Crystal City). It's very pretty-colorful and contemporary-and always bustling, and the dividers between the booths provides a degree of privacy. The food is generally very well prepared and offers a variety of dishes to satisfy many food preferences. Unfortunately for me they were out of fried squid and our server didn't mention it until she was taking our order so that was a huge disappointment! I ended up with just stuffed olives (which were excellent if you like olives and anchovies) and the beet salad which was disappointing (over-dressed and wilted) but I've had it on other occasions when it was perfectly prepared. I always ask the servers for recommendations; they know the food well and are reliable. On this occasion I described what type of drink I wanted and the waitress recommended the Bitter Lemon, which was exactly what I wanted! For a normal appetite you'll probably want 2-3 tapas each, but beware--we had 4 total, and 3 drinks between us, and our bill was $64!!

Overall very good. Some misfires from kitchen such as slightly burnt iberco panini, nut brittle listed on menu but toasted Marcona almonds were a disappointment. Also fried bacon wrapped dates with mustard sauce not good. Special gin and tonic, rabbit confit with apricots and wild mushroom rice were outstanding.

Jaleo was a good choice for lunch on a Saturday - a 10 minute walk from the National Gallery. The food was very good - we stuck with pretty traditional Spanish dishes except for the pasta paella which was a very nice variation on the traditional dish. The waiter was a bit too impatient to get our orders and not very helpful choosing dishes.

Such a shame for a restaurant with such a proud tradition and long history. The service was worse than substandard - our order was forgotten twice, and dropped off with no explanation or even identification of the different dishes.\n\nBut the real disappointment was the food - for whatever reason it was salted far past being edible. My husband, daughter and I went to Jaleo while visiting DC. What a pleasant experience. I prefer tapas restaurants because I like to try a lot of different foods. This place had a great diversity of dishes and ALL were excellent. That has never happened in my dining experience. From the bean appetizer, through various salads and fish dishes everything delighted. And the server, Katherin was superb. She knew all the dishes, gave recommendations when asked, and had the food to our table, even on a packed Saturday night, in a timely fashion.\n\nI can't wait to come back again - so much more on the menu to try!

Jaleo's is comparable to La Tasca, offering a huge array of tapas, an excellent wine list, and a nice atmosphere. It also has first-rate service. Best bet: Allow each member of your party to select two or three tapas, and share. Give yourself plenty of time, because this is NOT a place for a quick bite to eat. It's a place to take your time and linger over your meal.

My husband and I go to the Shakespeare Theatre so we often eat at Jaleo before the show. In addition to using our Bard Card to get our free flights of wine, we love the location and the ability to get in and out fairly quickly. We always make a reservation so we get seated promptly. This particular night we had a really outstanding experience, because both the food and service were superb. We ordered 'just right' with one pre-theatre dinner (tuna salad, shrimp, scallops, and pan chocolate) and then a few extras (cod-potato fritters and chorizo with mashed potatoes). Irene was our very pleasant and efficient waiter and the food was delivered in a perfect order with nice timing - not rushed and not too slow. This is why I love coming to Jaleo. It was a really memorable and fun dining experience all around!\n\nI am going to post this same review on Tripadvisor too so more people can see it. It was just OK-nothing particularly noteworthy. Once our table was ready, there was some confusion about the bar bill and the dinner bill, but the server was able finally to merge the two bills. Now the important stuff-we were in DC for 4 nights, and this restaurant was the best by far that we went to. The food was phenomenal. My two dishes were the classic paella and jamon and figs. What can I say, nothing short of amazing.  On vacation from Florida with my son and had to try one of Jose Andres' restaurants.  Had a total of 7 dishes and 2 desserts.\n\nFlaunta Iberico - with tomato, olive oil, and the cured Iberico ham was good enough to order a second set.\n\nGambas - shrimp with garlic had a little bite, just enough to get you going and was one of the best items we had.\n\nEnsalda Campera - a salad with tuna, fingerling potatoes, green beans, tomato, and hard boiled egg was light and delicious.\n\nChorizo Casero - with olive oil mashed potatoes was good, I wouldn't say great.\n\nIberico Hamburger - made from the pork was wonderful with all the different flavor coming together.\n\nDatiles con Tocino - bacon wrapped dates was another unique dish that I doubt you will find anywhere else.\n\nMixta Croquettes - wasn't something we loved, they had too much cheese vs chicken or pork in them but that was our preference.\n\nOlive Oil Ice Cream with Grapefruit dessert topped off the night with an over the top experience.  Olive oil ice cream with frozen grapefruit shavings, rind, ruby red slices, and mint leaves.  One of the best desserts I've ever had.  Also had traditional flan, which was great but being traditional was just that.\n\nI would recommend Jaleo to be on everyone's list to try.

The food is very Spanish, but the editor made great suggestions for the type and quantity that we should order, so it wasn't intimidating like so many tapas restaurants are in Spain. I would definitely return and will recommend Jaleo to friends traveling to DC.

This was my first trip to Jaleo in several years. We tried two different tasting menus and neither of us was overly impressed. I think if we had ordered a la cart, it would have been better. The tasting menus are A LOT of food. I couldn't eat the last 2 courses because I was stressed out we were running late. If you have an event to get to after dinner, it's best to tell the server in advance. We showed up at 6 pm and had 8 pm theatre tickets (literally next door to Jaleo at the STC) and were rushing through the last 3 courses. It was partially my fault, I never thought the dinner would take 2+ hours so I didn't mention to the server we had theatre tickets. We couldn't get our included dessert because we ran out of time. But the manager gave us her email address and followed up the next day with an email reminding us we could come back any time to get our dessert since we had already paid for it. Give metro irregularities, we don't go to Chinatown except when we have theatre tickets so I'm not sure if we'll ever redeem it.

This was my first trip to Jaleo and I figured Restaurant Week with friends would be a good time to try. We had a party of seven. We arrived and the Jaleo staff had our table ready. Our server was very attentive and did a great job of explaining the menu and making recommendations. For the tapas, I had the Ensalada Rusa, the shrimp, porkchop, and for desert I had flan from the Restaurant Week menu. All items were well flavored and filling. At the outset of the meal we let our server know that we would like separate checks, and he was very accomodating with our request. The entire staff was professional and welcoming. I walk by this restaurant frequently, and after this experience, I will make sure to stop in frequently.

The servers are very attentive, and they manage the 'delivery' of the food in a way that enhances the experience. Jaleo has changed a bit over the years but the food has been consistently excellent and my last outing there was no exception. This time I introduced a friend who had never eaten there and he agreed that it was outstanding. Service is good, not overly attentive but efficient nonetheless. The noise level is moderate but nothing that makes conversation difficult. And the location near both the Verizon Center and the Shakespeare Theater is also a plus as it is a perfect spot for dinner before an event at either of those venues. Jaleo continues to be one of my go-to spots for great food and an evening with friends.

Dining at Jaleo is something of a ritual when I am in Washington DC. Tapas-driven, Spanish influenced cuisine. The food is imaginative, delicious and well-presented. The wine selection is less expansive than last visit and they have abandoned their I Pad wine list--- but still good choices with a few at reasonable price points. We were with a group and tried the pre-theater menu for the first time. A great value! This was a first time for several in our group and everyone was impressed.

We were seated near the back of the room at a table that abutted the nearest other one by no more than 18 inches. When a couple arrived after us and asked to be moved elsewhere due to their being virtually in the middle of a highly-trafficked area, their request was denied. Soon a passer by knocked something over onto one of those diners. When they told the manager that they had been asked to move, he said doing so was 'above his pay grade.' When we mentioned the ridiculously close quarters to him on our way out, he said 'We have a celebrity chef and a Spanish designer and they decide how the tables are placed.' Jose Andres was NOT in the kitchen and who cares where your designer is from? This is an unacceptable way to address paying customers. Having eaten at Jaleo countless times, this is the first truly negative experience we have had and it leaves a very poor impression. As usual the food was terrific and the service was good, especially considering the close quarters in which servers and bus persons have to negotiate.

We went here after the new avengers movie (which I would also recommend) - Jaleo is a pretty reasonable place to go with a small-medium sized group after any of the nearby DC activities. Let me say that although everyone in our group of six was Age 26-32 we still made a reservation for dinner at 4:45 like boring old people. Everyone at Jaleo was happy to accommodate us and no one mentioned our scheduling faux pas.\nOur server was a cool dude who made some solid recommendations around the regular items and specials (in particular some kind of potato / cheese / mushroom dish that, despite his extremely strong recommendation, I think he undersold). The serving sizes were good for sharing about 3/4 people to a plate. Our server also had the grace to put up with one member of our group who kept trying to make jokes like 'oh this plate is 'bigger' than i expected' or 'now you better not bring be any big plates!' - I guess someone had told this guy it was a 'small plates' place and he thought that this was the funniest concept ever? I dunno, but the sever even gave him a courtesy laugh like every time so I tipped a little higher because I think to put up with a guy like that is definitely worth a couple bucks.\nThis is the third or fourth time I've been there in the last year or so (and once at their Crystal City location) and the experience has been consistently high level. Part of that though is that I don't think i could eat Jaleo every day - everything has sort of the same feel to it and after having tried a good spread across the menu I sort of find myself ordering a similar suite of plates. So while this might not be an everyday place for a first or second visit I highly recommend it.

We wound up at Jaleo by dumb luck. This place is awesome from the staff to the deco to most importantly the food. A bright and vibrant deco reflects the delightful food. We also has the traditional potato and onion tart and of course the signature 'liquid olives' ( YOU MUST GET THESES!!!) Our serve Ben was fantastic. My husband and I have been to Jaleo in DC numerous of times. Any time an out of state guest comes to visit, we always do the DC trek and we usually wind up at Jaleo for dinner.\n\nThe food, as usual, was amazing. There were 4 adults and 1 baby and we probably ordered 10 dishes to share. Everything we ordered was phenomenal! \n\nWe had reservations for 4:30pm. Because we had my child, we needed to eat early and then get back on the road. They do not offer a child's menu nor do they have a changing station in either bathrooms. Both can definitely be overlooked. \n\nWhat can't be overlooked was the service. You would think at 4:30pm, the place would not be so crowded and we would get waited on in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, only half of that was true. When we came in, there was about 6 tables occupied. We waited a good 7 minutes before someone even offered us water. And that only happened because we flagged someone down. Once we ordered our drinks, 3 alcoholic and 2 non-alcoholic, we started to order. My husband ordered first and when he was done, the waiter walked away. We had to flag him down so the rest of us could order.\n\nI could go on and on but I won't. Needless to say, my husband won't go back there again. I will because the food is amazing but if I get bad service again,........

Juan R, 67 was our server at table 63/1 which was just across from kitchen/server station, which was not ideal, especially since we had a reservation and there were several other open tables. We noticed all other tables getting bread and olive oil which we were not offered and upon request of our server we were told we could order some toasted tomato-rubbed bread. The service was totally disorganized as soon as we walked in the door. My partner and I made reservations, and while we were greeted with a smile, it was a comedy of errors while the three hostesses argued over where to seat us. When the finally made a decision, we were led to a dirty table at which point the young lady, clearly embarrassed, apologized and asked us to wait by the bar while she cleared the table. Soon after, she fetched us and sat us down. \n\nAn assortment of menus was dropped at our table, with no explanation on how the restaurant worked or without offering a drink. When another server stopped by to grab our drinks, she asked for ID. We produced our driver's licenses and were told that we were required to show our passports (we are Canadian citizens), so she brought the manager over. He came over and asked for our IDs once more, and studied them closely for 90 seconds in complete silence. And then just walked away. We did not get any type of verdict or decision, we were just left in annoying suspense as to whether we would get a drink or not. After another 10 minutes, our drink orders were dropped off, and then I asked the server to explain the food options (it's tapas style, which we didn't know - tourists), and she did an awesome job of explaining. The food was good, not memorable. \n\nGet ready for a whirlwind of annoyance with the staff.

Excellent service -- knowledgeable on food, beverages, and the regions from where they originate.

Food was interesting; I had a chance to try new dishes. However I felt the food was only a little better than average and often too salty.

We had the Restaurant Week menu items this time, each of which was delicious. The liquid olives are very special. Bacon-wrapped dates are always good. Food and service here is always excellent.

Worst tapas. Food was horrendous. I live and work in the area and have been before but this will be my last. It has turned into such a tourist trap -- bad food, bad service, and big expense. Hopefully it will go out of business so they can occupy the prime location with a restaurant worthy of its appeal. Stay away!

DC Restaurant Week, Summer 2016. Good value, great food, interesting wines. On this particular day, the service was not to the very high standard we associate with Jaleo.

Noisy, marginal food. The paella dish on the menu bared absolutely no resemblance to what a paella is.

A friend and I came for restaurant week. We were seated in the window which was the best possible outcome - their decor is discordant and inelegant. The bathroom aesthetic is particularly confusing. Our waitress was knowledgeable, precise and appropriately attentive despite being a bit quirky, though not exactly off putting. I wasn't a fan of the cocktail I ordered - the Negroni Del Campo - and without a beat she insisted on exchanging it, which I greatly appreciated. I ended up, on her successful recommendation, with one of their gin and tonics. The liquid olives are special. While almost everything we ordered was excellent, I would happily go back for liquid olives and cocktails alone.

I am a regular at Jaleo, and the food was as tasty and delicious as ever this time! So yummy--esp. the pan con tomate and the croquetas. Decliciosas!\n\nKeep up the great work. I will be back.\n\nMaria

We were sat immediately even after we informed the staff of another person joining us.\nService was as great as the food. We never felt hurries to move on.\nJaleo made a very good impression on my guests. Every single one mentioned that they intended to return.

Jaleo was outstanding as usual. It is amazing how Chef Andres has been able to keep up the high quality of food and service at Paleo and his other restaurants.

Two things were wrong with our dining experience - but the positive stuff first. Everything else. The food was great, the cocktails just right (not sweet, but also not a mix of shots), the wine suggestions worked. I was oozing garlic from my pores for the rest of the evening - success, as I went for everything garlicy. The main room seemed loud, but we older folk were seated in a bit of an alcove and thus could communicate. So the two things wrong: One, our waiter talked us into ordering some toasted bread with tomato jam as an immediate starter course, but it didn't actually come out until most of the other things were on the table and already being eaten. And two, I was bumped several times during the meal because the table was angled into a high-traffic lane. In retrospect, I think I could have inched it over myself. Next time. And there will be a next time.

Restaurant is good chance to attract new customer for their later coming. If you do not treat restaurant week menu seriously, customers will not come back for another meal. For me. No Jaleo DC next time

Went to Jaleo during DC Restaurant Week 2016 and was not disappointed! First of all, I cannot thank them enough for their understanding and letting me sit down after my friend was late by an hour due to Metro delays. Secondly, the food and their signature sangria was incredible! I was expecting portions to be very small but they were a perfect size (not too much, not too little) and I was still full by tapa #3 with one more tapa and dessert to go! Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys food and wants a place with good atmosphere and service!

We went to Jaleo's during Restaurant Week. The tapas were outstanding (as usual),and the service, despite the large number of diners was very good. We would highly recommend Jaleo's to anyone who wanted a great meal.

Haven't been there in a while and they have changed the menu. Didn't have my favorites on it that I was looking forward to, so I was disappointed. I found a dish to order and it was just okay. It was very noisy and hard to carry on a conversation. Will re-think before I go there again.

Restaurant Week in DC means the ability to sample selectively; Jaleo DC with its small plate offerings from Spain was a great occasion to try delectable mushroom soup poured over cheese shavings, filling chicken fritters, an outstanding salmon dish and a scrumptious flan on the fixed price menu. The scene is bustling and fairly loud, with tables very close together so the good vibes radiate through. I was pleased by the mix of flavors and substantial offerings, although the $22 Restaurant Week menu made this quite a good value; at other times of the year, the price point would be considerably higher. Great experience for dishes with which I was unfamiliar...

We are big fans of Jaleo, although we normally eat at their Crystal City location. We ate a very late lunch so Jaleo was largely empty. There were 3 other tables occupied, all in a tiny walled space. The hostess then jammed us in the fourth remaining table in that tiny space. It looked ridiculous considering the rest of restaurant was empty. Since the four tables were all incredibly close to each other, people walking by probably assumed we were all one big group. I asked the hostess why she was jamming us next to all the other people in the restaurant when there were so many other tables available (even close to the other tables just not right on top of them) and she just gave a strange look and said 'this is a great table.' I suppose I could have fought with her but it was a special occasion and I did not feel like getting in a dispute with the hostess to start the meal. But in the end it did taint what was a special meal out for me and my wife because there was absolutely no privacy in our conversation. Since the restaurant was otherwise empty and largely quiet, everyone at the 4 tables could everything the other groups were saying. We ended talking in hushed voices, which was rather odd.\n\nThe waitress was fine. We order the same dishes every time we come to Jaleo. Most of them were fine, but a couple were not up to our expectations (one was overcooked and one used some very poor bacon that you could not chew no matter how hard you tried). Also, for some reason there was a 20 minute gap between when our first 3 plates arrived and our last 3 plates. We've never encountered such a large gap before, and it seemed particularly odd considering there were only three tables occupied. We'll return to Jaleo, but not to JaleoDC anytime soon. Jaleo Crystal City is much better.

We really enjoyed our evening at Jaleo. My only complaint is that I didn't have enough room to try more things!!!!! Everything we had was wonderful and so many other things on the menu looked wonderful as well. I guess I will just have to go back to D.C. so I can try more things!!!!

We had three in our party and were seated in a odd area at the front of the restaurant with a large column and then corner windows to a busy street. It was behind a metal chain curtain - separating us from the rest of the restaurant. We felt like we were in a fish bowl. It was a horrible location that should not be used.\n\nIt took a while for our beverage order to be taken, and we ordered some initial dishes at the same time. The dishes came out literally in a few minutes, before our wine was served. We ordered more dishes, which also came out extremely fast - too fast. Except for one dish, all the food was served within about 20 minutes of sitting down. You felt like they wanted to get you quickly out of there so they could turn the table for another unwitting party. We were there no more than an hour.\n\nOn the good side, the food was excellent. Everything was very good. Despite the service being rushed, the servers were helpful and courteous. It is hard to recommend a single favorite but some memorable dishes were the garlic shrimp; stuffed anchovy olives; and fried chorizo and potatoes.\n\nIn terms of value, some dishes were much better value than others. The cheese dish has three good, but very small portions, for $18. My daughter ordered a mini-burger for about $8 that was smaller than a slider. Other than these two items, the quality and portions of the dishes were very good.\n\nIt was not a memorable dining experience, at least in a positive way. However, the food was great so I'd be willing to return if we had a better table.

José Andrés has three Jaleo Restaurants in the DC area. At all of them you will get good tapas and sometimes excellent tapas. This was a particularly good night in that the chef had a light hand with the salt. Sometimes, especially at the Crystal City branch, dishes are so salty as to be inedible. But that was not the case this time and we were very happy with the food. The best tapas were the Calamares en su tinta, Gambas al ajillo, and the Rossejat. Service was so-so, with our waiter coming across as indifferent. The wine I ordered was not available and the one he suggested replacing it with was OK but not worth the higher price. If cost is not an issue and you want a formal meal, go to Taberna del Alabardero. But for a more relaxed meal, Jaleo is usually a good choice.
