Excellent service from Leslie, including a history lesson on Old Ebbitt Grill. The only thing we did not care for was where we were seated - outside in what seemed like office building entrance or lounge area - felt like we were in a mall. We have previously sat inside at tables or the bar and it's a completely different, better energy and vibe. This was disappointing as we took a couple who had never been, so would have been better for them to experience 'inside'. Food, drinks, service were fantastic - we will be back!

It's historical and a mix of D.C. Politicos and tourists. However, the attraction ends there. Food and food choice very average and the service was terrible. Waiter was very attentive to regulars but the rest of us didn't even exist. The waiter attempted to take plates away when we clearly were not finished; water and coffee were not refilled; and the check was brought when we had barely put down our fork. Would not return.\n\nAlso, the restaurant engages in a very deceptive practice. The check has a 'suggested tip percentage'. Not uncommon but when you look at the math they've calculated the tip on the bill and the tax. Tipping is suppose to be based on the total for food and beverage excluding tax.

I loved the Trout Parmesan meal that has become a fast favorite. Ordering fish is not usually a goal, but their preparation is special. Food and beverage quality is always highly maintained, and don't even get me started on how good their desserts are!

Reserved a table for 7 but because only 5 of us were there, they didn't want to seat us until the party was complete. It was so crowded in front of the hostess area because no one could be seated until all parties were complete. People were shoving each other which we thought, why couldn't they seat 5 who already want to start ordering food and drinks rather than stand around waiting for 30 minutes past the reservation? Food was okay, it was so loud, and had I known it was the same as Clyde's of Gallery Place, I wouldn't have come here.

Classic spot in DC. Very cool setting. It was busy and loud of course, but that wasn't the concern. The food was so so and the service was surprisingly poor (attitude), like we just weren't important enough or spending enough $ for his time.

Great historical restaurant. Make sure to read about the history, they have a card up front, and then walk around to take it all in. I had the #1 walrus platter perfect for a starter. The double crab cakes for dinner were spectacular. My wife's pappardelle with short ribs came in a white sauce? Usually this type of food is in a red sauce. She was not thrilled with it. Said it was too salty. We would come back for sure.

Always an old favorite when in D.C. Disappointed they could not accommodate our party of 5 at a better table since we had a reservation. We were seated at a both for 4 with a chair sticking out at the end of the open side. All round tables taken for a special event in the atrium. Just a heads up for future parties of 5. Every time I have come to this restaurant, it has been excellent....that is, until this time. Our waiter did not bring bread after we asked, and spent too much time talking to a woman two tables over.\n\nThe brick chicken, which is usually excellent, was overcooked, charred, and hard to chew. Because of that, and the mediocre service, I'll think twice before coming again. If I do, and the chicken is overcooked, I will send it back and ask for a manager. This time, I was just too hungry to wait for another one.

I've eaten here a few times now while in DC. The food is very good. Crabcakes, amazing. This is a great place to people watch in DC. It's very crowded and people sit pretty close to one another, as a consequence, it's not very private or intimate. Also, because they are so busy, service tends to be just so so. They are polite- just not in a rush. We waited 20 minutes after dinner dishes were cleared before we were asked about dessert. Then it took another 10 minutes before we saw a cup of coffee and scoop of ice cream.

The last time I was in the Old Ebbitt Grill, it was still on F Street in the old, narrow, dark, and funky building. I was shocked by the sheer size of the new place. They've worked to retain the dark paneling and brass, but frankly, it is to the old place what Fado is to a real Irish pub. The place is thronged with people and noisy as heck - a great people watching place, but not much for a quiet conversational dinner. Maybe in the Atrium??? The food was good, but Washington is a city where almost every restaurant offers at least good food, and the prices at the Old Ebbott, while not in the Ocean Prime or Palm Court stratum, are 'healthier' than I would hope to see for what they serve and its quality. I had their tuna nicoise salad. A classic Tuna Nicoise is an arranged salad with tuna, potatoes, haricots verts, hard-boiled eggs, nicoise olives, and things like tomatoes and radish slices grouped on a plate, with a dijon vinaigrette served on the side. Lettuce is at best an accent on the classic version. This salad was a salad; a large bowl of greens with many of the ingredients and the dressing tossed in and the tuna, eggs, and potatoes arranged on top. For me, it was just too much lettuce coated with too much dressing - soupy and oily at the bottom. They never described how the tuna would be served nor did the waiter ask me how I might like it, and I forgot to say. A lovely piece of fish arrived, though almost raw. Now I love sashimi and this tuna was good enough to be eaten that way, but its soft, cold texture set against all that lettuce and all that dressing was a genuine turn-off for me. I would urge them to go back to a more classic presentation, frankly. Service is good, but brusk - those waiters have a LOT of people to take care of. It reminded me of a modern doctor visit - the doctor may well care about you, but you've got 12 minutes in there no matter what. Again, for the price, I would appreciate a little less frenetic pace.

We went here for Sunday brunch. We made a reservation and arrived about 20 min prior to the reservation. They stated we would be seated 'by the time of our reservation'. We were indeed seated one minute after our reservation. There seemed to be a lot of walk ins who were put into the queue with reserves so it did not assist us to have an actual reservation at all. We were seated in a side table which is one of the rows where you are sharing a long bench with three other tables and literally elbow to elbow. \n\nHe food was good and the price was fair. We couldn't really enjoy the venue at all due to super loud neighbors ten inches to our left and right. I wish that the side tables were reserved for walk ins.

This review may not apply to Old Ebbitt on a regular day but I just so happened to be there on a day in which they were trying to make a political point. In support of immigrants and noting the important role immigrants play in the restaurant industry the restaurant had a limited menu that mostly included salads and sandwiches. Due to high recommendations I had received from friends I reviewed the menu prior to arrival and had several items I intended to purchase, including ribeye and salmon as well as several appetizers (none of which they were selling). I ended up getting a cheeseburger, which while tasty was not the quality of meal I intended to have. We also ordered several desserts which were sub par. While I understand the point the restaurant was intending to make, they unintentionally lost income that night in that my friends and I spent way less than we were willing to and future income since my friends and I were so disappointed that we will not be returning. It would have been better if they had shut the restaurant down for the night.

I work across the street from Old Ebbitt Grill so frequent OEG often.\n\nService - The service has always been outstanding. The only downside to the service is it can take a little time for drinks and food. OEG is a massive institution with several bars and dining rooms.\n\nHappy Hour - I have been for many happy hours and generally take advantage of the 1/2 oyster bar menu. The seafood (oysters, clams, crab, lobster, and shrimp) is outstanding and at 1/2 off, not a bad buy. The Orca platter can be bought for $70 and you can share with 3-4 people. The drinks are good, I would definitely not call them craft cocktails but still get their job done. The multiple bars within, are always hustling and bustling with customers from all specs of life.\n\nBrunch - The fritatta was a major disappointment. If you took a Denny's omelet and threw some hash browns in it...boom an OEG fritatta. I expected much more. The crabcakes were also very disappointing. I typically dont complain about prices because I believe its the customers responsibility to know what they are getting into ahead of time ie. if you know its a fancy restaurant thats expensive, don't B*tch about the price afterward. OEG isn't an expensive restaurant, its very fairly priced; however, the Crab Cakes are over priced and not worth it. I have had much better in the area, our neighbors in MD are after all the masters. The Bloody Maryland (bloody mary) is great. It comes with one jumbo shrimp which will no disappoint. Also, if you ask for your blood mary spicy, expect from fire but in a good way. Chicken and Waffles are a great bang for your buck and will not disappoint taste wise.\n\nOverall - This is a DC institution. You have to come, but SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE. Make a resveration using OpenTable and save your family, friends, or colleagues the wait. Come during one of the happy hours and try the cold bar, skip brunch, and come back for dinner. All in all a solid place, if you avoid the brunch.

Old Ebbitt was recommend by friends and we would never go back. We arrived at 6:30 for our reservation, were seated at a tiny table for 2 along side all those other tables for 2 (therefore, felt like we were having dinner with the people on both sides of us). Our dinner was served so quickly we were gone by 7:00 p.m. No pacing of our appetizers and main course at all. Felt like we were cattle being herded. Not an experience to be done again.

Four of us went for breakfast, what a mistake. One ordered Eggs Benedict which was so over cooked it was not consume. Two ordered Omelettes which were so bad neither was even half finished. Three of had sausage and all three were cooked so well done that all three of us only took one bite. The water which was the best thing brought to our table must of have special because we could not get a refill. Maybe lunch or dinner is better but I would not take the chance given so many choices in the area.

I was looking for a place where a long-time friend and I could have a nice lunch and catch up after many years. It was lunchtime on a Saturday, so we ordered off the brunch menu. We both had the eggs Benedict with crab. It was outstanding. I also appreciated the fact that even though the place was packed, we stayed nearby three hours and never felt rushed to leave. By DC standards, the prices were, reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. Will be back!

Good portion sizes, delicious food, friendly service, clean, free postcards, historic theme decor. Had dinner during visit to HBCU@State. Not too many vegetarian options. Took 45 minutes from seating to end of meal, during Immigrant day off protest. So 20-25 minutes food wait while short staffed. They can change burgers and other menu items to make them vegetarian. Cost $101 for 4 people with drinks.

While the interior exudes class and formality, the place is actually quite unpretentious. The menu on the night we visited was small but extremely varied. Anyone in your party should be able to find something to eat. I rather thought it was proper to be dressed up as the place does have a clubby feel to it, however there were patrons in jeans and tshirts. Our server was well versed in the menu and his recommendations were proven correct for our tastes. It was a phenominal dinner and would look forward to visiting again!

It is hard to fault our server for being unenthusiastic about serving us during a valentine lunch when the restaurant was fairly busy, but I am sure that other servers that truly care can pull it off. In our case another server quickly placed the plate on our table and went on to the next task.

The place obviously does well and has been around for a long time but my entree was sub par. Good bread and butter, good service, good location. Those are the positives. The pork belly taco appetizer was yummy but over priced at $12 for 2 mini tacos. I ordered a Rib Eye steak, cooked medium. The steak came medium rare in most places and rare in the meatier parts. I normally would have said something but the table next to us also ordered the Rib Eye and had it sent back twice to get it right and eventually gave up and ordered a different meal. I didn't want to give my waiter a hard time even though it wasn't his fault. In this situation it was clear that the chef did not know how to cook a steak. More importantly however is the price vs. quality of the steak. Having worked as a professional meat butcher for several years, based on flavor and look of the steak, it appeared the cut they were using was further down the back, more like a strip steak. The flavor was smokey and the marbling and fat content was little to none. For a $30-10oz. steak, I expected much more. If you are the type of person that orders a Rib Eye, you know what you want: fat, which means flavor; neither of which this steak had. To all future customers, DO NOT ORDER A RIBEYE. \n\nOver all, I would have been better off with a burger, or sandwich. It's just disappointing we traveled to DC for the weekend to celebrate an early Valentine's Day and was told we 'had' to eat at the famous Old Ebbitt Grill. My wife and I had the most disappointing $60 steaks we have ever head. I realize this isn't a steakhouse but for $30, it should have been a lot better.\n\nMake some changes.

What to say about dear Old Ebbitt? I have a love-hate relationship with the place. What I love is the sense of history and tradition, and overall feel of the place, as well as some dishes. What I don't love is the lackluster menu (except for the crabcakes!) and equally lackluster attention to detail exhibited by the host and chef this time around. \n\nMISINFORMATION: I called in advance to see if OE offered valet parking on Saturdays for lunch. I stressed Saturday at Lunchtime, and repeated it to make sure, because it's been my experience that some restaurant staff are quite quick to answer 'yes,' when the service is actually only offered in the evenings or just on weekends, etc. The friendly hostess assured me there was lunchtime valet service so we booked a table. We of course arrived on Saturday to find no valet stand. I called from the car and was told valet parking is available for dinner only. This may be a small thing to most, but I'm disabled and for me the misinformation caused unnecessary inconvenience and discomfort.\n\nSERVICE: Crab cakes were very good, but the menu at brunchtime is nothing special. Eggs ordered over-medium had to be sent back twice b/c they were hard-fried. Both times. When the third plate of eggs arrived with hard yolks, I gave up. Also, my appetizer arrived well in advance of my dining companion's; her appetizer did not arrive until well after the main course. I expect better coordination than this at OE's price point.\n\nPOSITIVES: Our server was great--attentive and pleasant. Her attitude did much to make up for the other hiccups. The bustling ambiance is exciting, noisy, but you can have a conversation. In all, not an awful experience, but could have been made much better with more attention to detail and more listening to the clients.

The Old Ebbitt Grill is a cool place, with lots of history. We've been looking for a good place for a nice Sunday breakfast, and this is the place to go. The brioche French toast was delicious, and my wife loved the Chesapeake eggs (Eggs Benedict made with a crab cake and Old Bay Hollandaise sauce). Service was excellent. The last meal I'd like to write about from our trip to Washington, D.C. was at the Old Ebbitt Grill. This family friendly restaurant with upscale food is just steps from The White House. I made a reservation for our family of four on OpenTable for 5 P.M. and we were seated immediately upon our arrival.\n\nInside Old Ebbitt Grill is a massive space full of rich mahogany and velvet covered booths. The decor is described as Beaux-Arts, meaning rich, lavish, and heavily ornamented. It is probably one of the fanciest places my young kids have ever stepped foot inside. Our service was excellent and the pace of the meal was perfect for our young family.\n\nOur entire family loved dining at the Old Ebbitt Grill. I can only wish that our hometown of Cincinnati might one day have something comparable to this. An upscale eatery that also caters to those with kids. I would absolutely return without a question on a future visit to D.C.\nOld Ebbitt Grill Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato Old Ebbitt Grill

The reservation process was a breeze. Old Ebbit grill keeps up with its reputation for having excellent food and service. The wait was not long, and our table near the bar was excellent without too much noise; I think the seating at the front was a little too crowded and would be noisy. I love the outer seating area at the center of the structure with natural light. The ambience was high end but still casual enough. I also love the historic facts about the restaurant and its curious clientele. Our server was very courteous and prompt. Mostly I would recommend this restaurant for its food; the Arugula salad was delicious and the Salmon in that wonderful sauce is worth coming back for. We took my visiting mother-in-law here after a play, thinking it would be a festive treat, but it wasn't very nice. It was absolutely packed at 4:00 on a Saturday. Despite having reservations, we were handed a buzzer and made to wait. We were then shown to a booth by a window, which seemed promising. However it had a view of the kitchen and was next to a bathroom door so there were people always hovering around our table. It was like being in the last row of a plane. Two people got their drinks and the other two had to wait an extra 10 minutes. After another significant wait, the food arrived and two entrees, the crab cakes and the meatloaf, were stone cold. My MIL asked for her meatloaf to be heated up, which predictably took forever. I ate the crab cakes cold so we could just get of there. My husband enjoyed his meal, so that was good. Will not be returning.

When I did not accept that table I was offered one across from the back bar. That was extremely disappointing. Lesson learned.

I went with a friend whom I hadn’t seen in several years. My filet mignon with a parmesan cheese crust was excellent. It was served with sautéed spinach, mushroom gratin & fingerling potatoes. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her crab cakes. Another friend and I went to Old Ebbitt a few years ago and were seated in the main dining room. You couldn’t have asked for better food and service, but it was too noisy, at least to my old ears. This time, my friend and I were seated in a different section, Grant’s Bar. It was a much better place to converse.

As always, the staff was friendly and very professional. The 3 course fixed price lunch special was a delicious and a great value. I am unable to resist the New England clam chowder. My salmon was cooked to perfection. The accompaniment of vegetables and sauces under the salmon would have been work the price of the meal. I had the bread pudding with ice-cream drizzled on top. I generally avoid bread pudding but am glad I ordered it. It was light and worked well with the chocolate and ice-cream. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal.

Old Ebbitt was great in so many ways! The food was outstanding and the service was top-notch! We went there to enjoy the ambiance with our children, which was all that I remembered and expected. However, it was on the day of the 'Million Women March'. It was very disconcerting to take your boys into the men's bathroom and to find a number of women in the men's room. Some of the women in the restroom had profane language and signs/buttons. I am very glad that we had a reservation because this restaurant was very busy. We did not have to wait for our reservation which was great! The atmosphere was a little hectic for my taste but I did enjoy the little cozy spot that we had in the corner near the back. We came to this restaurant to celebrate my birthday. We traveled from Atlanta, Georgia to see the historic places that Washington D.C. had to offer. We started off with a dozen half off oysters (WHAT A DEAL!). Next, we ordered a bottle of the Mahua Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. Our main entrée consisted of the Salmon and the Swordfish (YUMMY). Dessert was satisfying, we had the Crème Brue Le. The food here always came out quickly.\n\nOur server was sweet. She was attentive to detail but wasn't very sociable. That was the one part that was missing in our experience. I don't blame her at all because she had a lot of tables and I am sure that the last thing on her mind was to babysit us. However we did leave a 30% tip because she did do her job well.\n\nThe hosts were very nice and even continued to call us by our names after the initial greet. The stand out star of the night was the young woman who had an English accent, I believe. With all of the commotion she managed to hold her composure with class and a big welcoming smile. We loved that! \n\nI wasn't a big fan of the restrooms. In my opinion it needs to be worked on.\n\nThank you for having us! We will recommend this restaurant to others.

I participated in the Women's march and wanted to complete my DC experience with dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill. I am so glad I made reservations, because everyone had the same idea. I came in early to check on my reservation, it was insane. The young man that was hosting was swamped. However, he was calm, cool and very polite. What a GEM! Obviously, I was early for my reservation, he suggested I come back closer to my scheduled time. When I did return, I was given a pager and wiggled up to an overwhelmed bartender. He, too, was kind and professional and got me my drinks as soon as he was physically able to. \nWhen I was paged for dinner, I was tired and starving. The server was prompt and welcoming. We had calamari that was lovely. Split a fabulous caeser with anchovies. My mother had the crab cakes entree and I had the braised short rib in pappardelle pasta. My mother loved hers and mine was DIVINE. The server was wonderful and so was the food. On my way out the host thanked me. By name. I couldn't ask for a better end to a wonderful day. Great experience. I made reservations for 1/21 at 3:30pm while my family was in town. We got to the restaurant and there was the huge women's protest outside. The restaurant got super crowded but we were seated right away. Our table was near the front, where it was extremely loud and protestors were flooding inside, people bumping into our table. Our server said since they were so busy they couldn't move us. The manager came over and understood right away and moved us somewhere quiet. That made our night. The food was great, the flatbread appetizer, pastas, brick chicken cooked perfect, shrimp and grits the best my family ever had. The only negative was they allow the public to use their restroom. Tons of women were going in and using the men's restroom and yelling this is what democracy looks like. Restaurant should not have allowed public to flood into the restrooms nor females use the men's restroom.

This is a classic DC restaurant. It is has become a tourist attraction because of its long history as a power-broker breakfast and lunch spot and its location. But the décor is a classic, with cool murals, lots of dark wood and beautiful bars. Went for Sunday brunch and have been for lunch in the past. Good menu, food very good, and prices are appropriate. We had a reservation for mid afternoon -- smack in the middle of the women's march on Washington which surrounded the building and filled the restaurant and bar. Never have I experienced such gracious, courteous and kind service! They were nonplussed by the crowds and attentive to the patrons. The venue is full of history and the ghosts of politicians and journalists that gathered and gossiped here. The food was wonderful - traditional, thoughtful, relaxed and elegant. I had champagne (though the venue calls for an old fashioned or a single malt) and oysters to start, filet mignon and a sinful butterscotch blonde for desert. Just marvelous in every way.

Old Ebbit Grill(OEG) is a gem in DC. One of the oldest restaurant and bars in the DC area, it's been a local hangout for the powerful throughout the ages. We applaud the OEG for giving the common man access on inauguration day. It was one of the most exciting experiences to share a bar built on the concept of people coming together with others wanting to watch the parade. Bonus points to the OEG for offering their full menu, excellent service, and not being high-brow on such a celebration.\n\nBut, let's get down to what makes this place a restaurant that I visit each time I'm in DC. Let's start with their raw bar. Happy Oyster Hour is my favorite hour. I love their half-price oysters, which are especially good in my opinion (transparency: I live in a land-locked state, but they are sooo good). \n\nYou are also going to enjoy the clam chowder, the Parmesan trout, the brick chicken, and a lot of other choices on the menu. \n\nHere's a couple of tips to make sure you enjoy the OEG as much as I do. Yes, make reservations. This place is constantly packed and it's going to be difficult to get a great table without it. Should you not have a reservation and there's only two of you, there are two bar locations (well, three). Sure, the one you see when you come through the front door, but it wraps all the way around to the next room. There's also one off the back side of the restaurant towards the atrium. The same great food and service at the bar is available. Just be prepared to wait.\n\nAlso, come for the experience and not on a time constraint. Take it all in and go when you have some time to not hurry. The food will be amazing and you'll walk away with a smile.\n\nI LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!

Despite heavy inauguration traffic, our table was ready promptly. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, which is a bit quieter than the bar and main seating areas. Service was absolutely top notch and each course was served promptly. \n\nFor starters, the calamari was enhanced by hot peppers also fried with the batch, along with excellent crsip greens of some sort. The oyster stew is the finest my wife and I ever experienced, with several plump oysters fried and suspended in a cream based gravy which was enhanced with andouille sausage finely dispersed, with a nice complement of spinach to broaden the flavor. Needless to say, the main courses of shrimp and grits, crabcake and mussells linguini were over the top. \n\nOur waiter also informed us that Old Ebbit shares, and the recipes can indeed be found on their website. I should note that some are posted but certainly not all.\n\nI always recommend this restaurant to those asking for a vintage Washington experience. With pricing that leaves plenty of money in your wallet, it is still the eatery to beat in DC.

An old-time establishment with just the perfect club-type atmosphere. Great menu and service. Food is very good - standard American fare, hearty and tasty. I'd love to go back. One caveat: we couldn't seat our party of six together so we had to sit separately. They won't seat more than five together due to space limitations. If not for that I'd give them another star.

I made my reservation 2 months prior to my visit. I was seated on time However, I was seated in an atrium outside of the restaurant. This area is nothing like what you expect for OEG. The ambiance is horrible. It is like an Embassy Suite breakfast area. There are offices all around you. My server was less than enthusiastic when he saw that I was a single. the food was good but the experience was disappointing. This area should be used for walk-ins If nothing else the hostess should let the guest know so we could make a decision if we had rather wait for a table in the actual restaurant or be seated immediately.

This was an incredibly disappointing restaurant. The food was good but the service was absolutely horrendous. We planned to have a nice dinner, multiple courses, bottle of wine and cocktails. It took 15 minutes for us to get a glass of water refilled, he did not want to answer any questions, and wasn't personable at all. When we spoke with the managers they seemed to be laughing at us and not care as to our concerns. I've worked in the service industry for many years and this is the worst experience I've ever had. Have eaten here before for lunch and brunch. Dinner reservation this time was made days in advance. Arrived on time and were assigned to a table smack at the top of the stairs by the front door, cold incoming air, and hostess station. Told no other table available, but 'you can join the waitlist with the walk ins if you want to wait'. The table for 2 appeared to be a table for 4 split into two tables 3 inches apart. Felt like we were on a date with the table next to us. Poor service, indifferent attitudes. Entrees brought out while still eating salads, and was met with a blank stare from waitstaff. (Table so small there was no room for 2 plates each). Couldn't wait to leave. On the plus side, the Market Salad was excellent.

We get here once a quarter. Oyster's were great, as usual. Entree's were 'very' poor this time. Quality control in a large restaurant can be a challenge, I assume, so we attribute the poor quality to that. To be honest, the watercress that came out with two of the dishes was literally ready for the trashcan. So, attention to detail from the kitchen and the wait staff was missed. Very disappointing. On the plus side, the usual bartenders were on point with quality mixes and very positive service. Everyone can make a mistake, so we will be back. Hoping the next visit matches prior quality. If not, then oyster's and drinks to be on the safe side.

We each had a different entreé and all four of us were very happy with our choices. On our table was the trout, pork chop, brick house chicken and the crab cake. In addition, the Oysters Rockefeller were scrumptious. Dessert was another difficult choice but we settled on each having a different selection and tasting each proved that there was no wrong choice. We had the blonde sundae, the peanut butter pie, the pecan pie and the bourbon walnut pie. Each was better than the last. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, and the service and I would (and did) rate each highly. This was a pre-theater dinner and we had a leisurely dinner and still made it to the Kennedy Center with time to spare. The evening got rave reviews from each of the diners and we all agreed that we would enjoy a return trip.

The food was good (not special). The locale is very nice and for the prices definitely worth the trip down to DC. They sat us 5 people on a booth, which meant that the fifth person had to seat on a chair on the outside, which wasn't too comfortable. The food was good by DC standards, but the service was looking little on the slow side. Good experience overall.

I'm always amazed at how great a job the Old Ebbitt does, despite the volume. We went at 7 on New Year's Eve and it was packed. Our service was outstanding from the young Oriental woman server...she was very cheerful and helpful...even with a slow ketchup bottle.. We got our drinks promptly and the food was well-timed. The oyster sampler was simply fantastic, the split Caesar salad very good and nicely split in small bowls. We were home by 9pm but the evening felt much longer and definitely good value!

Our 2nd time here while in the city. We had a combo of lunch/breakfast items. French toast was fantastic, cooked perfectly. Salad with lemon confit was great! Flatbread was just OK. Seems like an afterthought in the kitchen. Not crispy, more chewy and on what seemed like a pita. We asked for eggs with cheddar cheese, got NO cheese. We asked for crispy bacon, it was limp. Didn't bother on the eggs, but did send the bacon back and it was fixed. Our server was very unenthusiastic, not bad per se, just not happy in any way. As expected the prices here aren't inexpensive, so you expect a bit more and on this trip we didn't get it. Will go back and try again.

We checked the menu out on Yelp & Tripadvisor and saw the prices were reasonable and the ratings on both were very good. We made a reservation and had a great time and very good meals. My son had the turkey club, I had the chicken sandwich and my wife had the small salad (she wasn't very hungry). We all were very pleased with our meals and the value. Our waiter was very good/nice and friendly too, he let me try samples of two draft IPAs (I liked them very much and will try them next time we visit as I drank the Guiness Stout). Overall, I'd recommend The Old Ebbitt's Grill we had a great time!!!

Food was great. But we were caught in a shift change. First wait person was fantastic. Second wait person was nowhere to be seen for at least 30 minutes. Every once in awhile a bus boy would be in the vicinity and we would get him to act as our wait person. Eventually the second wait person showed up and could see we were pissed. And then the manager, or someone in a suit came by and gave us very lame excuses as to why the shift change had gone so horribly wrong. Bottom line: The Old Ebbitt Grill is a very popular and packed place. It really doesn't matter to them if you have a bad experience. Other diners will eventually take your place and the beat will go on. The $ will continue to roll in and the masses will be pleased.

I had grown up going to the Old Ebbit grill and was excited to take my husband there for the first time since we had just moved to America from abroad. The food was good but the service was obscene. My husband took care of our lunch bill and gave the waitress a tip. In his culture, any tip is seen as over the top so what he gave our waitress he saw as a very generous tip. I had just come back from the restroom and was unaware that my husband had already paid the bill. The waitress was berating him that the tip was not enough and completely embarrassing him. He had never meant any offense and had thought he had given her a good tip. I realize that he had not met the waitresses standards but when it was obvious he was not American I find it outrageous that someone would embarrass someone of a different culture. I had always enjoyed my time at Old Ebbitts Grill but now all my memories are comepletly tainted by my husbands embarassment. I thought a place like that restaurant would be kinder to other cultures and an honest misunderstanding on a culture issue.

We have dined at OEG many times. As recent as 3 weeks ago. We had appetizers & salad & waited 40 min. For main course. No explanation. I think ticket was lost or something? Manager came over not to apologize , but to say all tables 30-40 min. Behind. If the kitchen is backed up then pace the courses better & let the diner's know. People around us had their food in a timely manner. Table next to us came in after us had appetizer , food & ready to go before we had main course. This was a special dinner for or son & girlfriend visiting from CA. Son's med. rare filet was med. well. Manager said, well sir if you say it's not med. rare! Anyone could see it wasn't med. rare. Went to Old Ebbitt Grill following afternoon theater on Christmas Eve. As usual the bar was crowded and noisy, but in a fun way and not annoying. Decorations were festive without being gaudy. Bar service was prompt and drinks were well made. Moved to a nice table for two. Started with the Rhode Island Oysters- beautifully served and perfect. I had the lobster fra diavolo and my partner the trout. The lobster was really great- not a bit overcooked and in a nice sauce which did not overpower it. A good trick if they can pull it off every time. The trout was great with a nice crust and done exactly right. We were given time for each course and not rushed. Struck up a conversation with the couple next to us which made the evening even nicer. The distraction however caused me to forget to put my credit card back in my wallet. It was nice to hear the next day that they had it in their safe ready for pickup.

Although we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation we were seated immediately. Our table in the bar area was very nice since it is a little quieter and less hectic there than in the main dining room. The food was excellent as always and we particularly enjoyed the wide selection of raw oysters and a delicious oyster stew. The main entrees were all well prepared and servers were efficient and polite and explained various nuances of the menu for that night. All in all, our evening in DC was a wonderful Christmas experience.

Old Ebbitt has been my favorite since before I even moved here in 1995. It is a power place, you can dress from totally casual to evening wear, the decor is very good, it's always hopping, the food is very good and very reasonable. My favorite dish is the parmesan trout, followed as a close second by the crab cakes. Also, it serves dinner very late, maybe past 1AM.

We were sat right on time for our reservation, can't beat the terrific wait staff and the old school bartenders. Even the host that sat us, though very young, was friendly and polished with his service. Great cocktail - re-fashioned. Oysters are a must . Enjoyed the hot steak salad which I split with a friend. Warm walnut pie was a nice ending.

We had a reservation before a 7pm show. Arrived , were told we were late and they were behind (we were 5 minutes late arriving) and were told they were a few minutes behind. We were seated 45 minutes later. This wasn't an oversight, everyone had show tickets and they were all delayed. It was one thing to be behind - how they treated us and other guests they were delaying was beyond poor. Disappointing across the board.

So disappointing. Maybe going during holidays is terrible idea. Crowded and loud but where our table was was even worse---some horrible annex part literally located in the lobby of a building. If you aren't going in order to experience the ambiance of DC's oldest restaurant maybe that would be okay. If you are, you are basically made to feel like second class citizens. Food was actually pretty good except sides for otherwise good pork chops were lukewarm at best, more accurately room temp. Mixed drink would have tasted good if the glass didn't smell and taste like a dirty bar rag. We wanted a special holiday experience. We got one of our worst experiences in a while.

Old Ebbitt at Christmas is always crazy but they handled it poorly. Service was inattentive at best and the waiter wouldn't speak to us. The fish (in fish and chips) was soggy, the steak portion was tiny and came with no steak knife, and the mushroom bisque tasted like cream of mushroom from a can. The roasted butternut squash entree was good, though, as was the blondie sundae.

I have been to the OEG on many occasions and love everything about it - the food, the service, the location, etc. HOWEVER, I made the mistake of scheduling a business lunch during Spring Break. The noise was unbearable, the service was rushed and the ambiance was more like a daycare center than an old and trusted restaurant. My fish was served greasy and cold; my colleagues had varying success with their selections. I understand the crab salad was great. I won't give up on the OEG, but I will know never to schedule lunch during Spring Break. I accept this as my poor judgment. I will be back for the oysters on the half shell ...

When did this place become TGI Friday's? Memories of the place suggest a brassier, oakier interior, which is still there but it competes with gaudy murals (the menus explain their story) and a 30s-50s-ish lobbyist crowd that may put you off your meal. Not sure why this gets the crowds other than location and sheer scale of the place. Oysters are good, steaks ok, service a bit smug and dismissive, but it's the 'new DC' (media flacks, big pharma 'Ciprosluts' and the like). DC now has a lot of places to eat so Ebbitt may need to try a bit harder.

I'm going to get straight to the point. Please don't be persuaded by the 'extremely generous' reviews and the location. It's about the experience and mine was easily forgettable. The food was just over mediocre and the proportions seemed suitable for a child and was plated by one as well. The atmosphere was not designed to enhance of enlighten the dinning experience put rather to generate revenue by cashing in unsuspecting tourist who have been caught the charm and allure by its location. \n\n-Reginald

There is a saying 'a server and make or break your experience', he broke broke it. We had a better experience at the bar. He seemed rushed with us, we learned more about the restaurant(history and specials) from over hearing the other servers chatting with their tables. Our dinner took awhile and our desert took longer. I have worked in the F&B industry and I know he wasn't 'in the weeds', he just didn't really care. I was really looking forward to the dinner. If we do ever go back we will opt to sit at the bar.

Found this restaurant online and saw it was Zagat-rated. I've lived in DC 10 years and was returning on business after almost 20 years. Lots of have changed. I wanted a special place to take my friends, one of which was recently promoted, in the military, so, I needed to find a special place.\n\nUpon arrival, it was chaotic. People trying to drop off and go park or those who knew about valet, stopped right in front of the restaurant, blocking traffic. You have to valet park, $10, because there's hardly any street parking downtown and other garage parking is $17 the first hour. \n\nUpon entering the restaurant, the wait staff was very friendly and even fixed a mess up on my part--got us a 7:15 pm reservation, after I booked online with Open Table, for 8 pm. Kuddos to them! Waited at the bar and had a margarita. It was a good margarita, but was a bit pricey--$10+, for a small glass. Then we were seated and it was a good table.\n\nThe menu wasn't impressive; could have had more selections, especially seafood--I ordered the port schnitzel, 3 friends ordered, lobster potpies and a duck pasta. We each tasted each other meals. I should have ordered the lobster potpie, as it looked and tasted better than my schnitzel, which was dry. We also had the cheese sample appetizer and spinach dip with little pieces of bread. The cheese sample was wonderful. I would have had celery with the spinach dip, though. We also ordered a bottle of Jordan (a red semi-dry wine), which was good.\n\nMy friend commented that they shouldn't have marble stairs going down to the restrooms, as they were a bit slippery. The atmosphere was good but there was just too many so-so things about this place.

Overrated and glad it's over in DC because it's not somewhere I'd recommend to family or friends. While it might have a 'legacy reputation' in DC, I found the meal I had was lacking in flavour and I had to send it back to the kitchen, while the staff were less than interested in the needs of their patrons and more interested in the tip they were going to get. Well, here's my tip: treat your customers a little more respectfully and less as though it's 'one in, one out' and you'll get a decent tip. As it is, avoid this over-hyped mess of a restaurant and give your patronage and dollars to a smaller, independent restaurant that will actually make you feel welcome.

We had to go in first, and the hosts very promptly and politely moved the potted plants and opened the door for our guest, both coming and going. I was a little unhappy but he was nonplussed, probably being used to similar situations. On the flip side, when I made the reservation I had forgotten to mention that we would have a large service dog and the restaurant staff quickly seated us at a table with plenty of room to accommodate us all, dog included.\nAnd, of course, the food, decor and service were as consistently good as always.

What can I say, Old Ebbitt is an institution. Generally, I only go for brunch, and it gets packed around that time, so you definitely need a reservation (but if you eat brunch late, say around 2, you should be OK). Once you get through the mob of people in the waiting area, you're golden. The bar is great, and we were actually able to get 5 seats next to each other for a pre brunch drink. \n\nThe food is traditional American fare, drinks are well made and quick, and the service is great. This is a great spot to bring out of town guests (especially since it's directly across from the White House), and there will always be something for everyone on the menu. Out of town family sometimes need something traditional and reliable (people can only eat at tapas restaurants so many times in one weekend) and this fits the bill.

Old Ebbitt is able to pull off that rarest of restaurant feats: the trifecta of excellent service, delightful cuisine, and reasonable pricing. The staff provided personable, attentive and seeming effortless service as fresh hot bread and chilled oysters seemed to simply appear on our table. Our entrees were delivered fresh from the cooking line, still steaming. My wife and I had duck that was perfectly cooked to our selected mid-rare temperature, moist and meaty with a deliciously crispy skin. Our friend enjoyed a dish of pappardelle topped with beef that just melted on the tongue. Disappointed with the salmon fish tacos - fish was breaded and cubed served on bed of rice on flat taco shells. Difficult and messy to eat. The pickled red cabbage didn't complement the fish tacos.

Excellent customer service, excellent food and excellent atmosphere. My father is a Pearl Harbor Survivor and we were in DC for the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor and everyone recommended Old Ebbitt Grill, from our hotel staff to friends to Uber drivers. We were not disappointed! Loved it! We loved the ambiance at the bar too!

What a let down: I had been here once before (over ten years ago now) and decided that we would celebrate the holidays with a nice meal. Such a disappointment. That awful linguini crab dish (or lobster?) - spicy tomato sauce... I took one bite and wondered how this was even on the menu. Shame on me for not sending it back to the kitchen. \n\nNever again. Sorry OEG.

My wife and I were tourists from Wisconsin looking for a restaurant near the White House after a strenuous day of visiting the Smithsonian. We looked them up on line and luckily found Ebbitt's Grill.\nThe service was superb and the food absolutely delicious. We happened to be in time for the raw oyster happy hour. The oysters were tremendous, as was the trout. My wife had the soup of the day and Salmon salad. She found it to be delicious as well.\nNext trip to Washington will include another stop at Ebbitt's Grill.

Old Ebbitt Grill (OEG) continues to be a go to place for fresh oysters in downtown DC. Good selection of cold water (Northeast and Northwest US and Canada). Their Jumbo Shrimp are excellent, too. Their signature entree is their parmesan trout. I would also recommend the calves liver (which seems unavailable elsewhere). OEG has changed their method of serving the cooked oyster stew to a small shallow tray rather than a bowl. The bowl presentation was better.

My recent visit to the Ebbitt was not good. The service was terrible. Our server disappeared and our water glasses sat empty for at least 20 minutes. The food was good, but that was it. The chairs were worn and in desperate need of recovering and also had what looked like blood stains. There are many more options in DC and the Ebbitt is no longer one of my food destinations.

Every single dish was great. We had Clyde's chili and the hint of cinnamon made it one of the best bowls we have ever had. The clam chowder, grilled sword fish and jumbo crab cakes were all equally delicious and amazingly, the fresh oysters managed to distinguish itself from the fierce competition as our favorite dish of the night. They were so good that we ordered 3 dozens to share amongst ourselves. \n\nThe service was fantastic as well and made an incredible dining experience all the more memorable. Keva showed great attention to detail, giving us enough time to think through our orders and recommending the items in a way that transcended a mechanical rendition of what most people eat at the restaurant. \n\nIf it weren't for the fact that we were visiting from Singapore, my friends and I would definitely be tempted to visit this place as often as we could. In fact, we half-joked since getting back home that we might consider flying back just to eat the oysters here again.

We went here based on a friends recommendation. It's definitely an old school DC restaurant, the food is okay (but comes fast), the noise level is high ( we were seated very close to other 2 party couples) and it doesn't feel very personal (feels like they churn people in and out). If you go make sure you reserve a table, at 7:30 on Friday night the wait was 1 1/2 hours.

It is always a pleasure to have a reason to dine at Old Ebbitt Grill -- in this case, my husband and I had tickets for an evening function and we wanted to have dinner before it began. Be sure to make a reservation because lines go out the door quickly and wait times build up. It is worth the wait. We were quickly seated, thanks to our Open Table reservation, and a waiter was there to take our drink order as soon as we sat down. Menus are seasonal and there is a nice variety to please any palate (including vegan). There was a nice selection of wines, spirits, cider and beverages. I opted for casual with Fish & Chips and it was the real deal -- light and flaky cod with a nice coating of batter and delicious fries. Prices are somewhat higher than the every day rate, but you can be assured of good food, good atmosphere and a more than satisfactory experience.

You want to make a reservation for the Old Ebbitt because they are always crowded, but always well worth it for lunch or dinner or a craft beer and oysters happy hour - a real Washington establishment, filled with locals and tourists alike. Food is consistently ample and good, and the service is always cheery and informed about the food and life and events in Washington. A block from the White House and the Treasury Department and Washington Monument, hard to beat the location too. I have been going there for 30+ years and it has always satisfied. Great food (the chicken and burger was amazing) and service! We had a 6.30 reservation and were seated immediately, even though there was a huge line. Unfortunately, we got the second table next to the entrance (no others available) which made conversations very difficult because it was so loud and the door kept on opening and brought in cold air. When I made the reservation, I mentioned it was for our anniversary and would have expected a better table. The menu, wines and desserts were great! Fast service and attentive waiter- no complaints. Great character, attentive professional yet friendly service, place filled with locals and tourists alike added to the energy. We shared a dozen oysters (half price during happy hours 3 - 6 PM). My friend got a beet salad -- delicious and huge, and an entree of horseradish encrusted meatloaf, real mashed potatoes, and spinach. It was fabulous from my little taste. I got a bowl of navy bean soup, and an entree salad that was large enough for at least 2 people. I Ioved my choices. We each got a drink, and the bill came to $86 pre-tax.
