Innovative cuisine featuring dishes you are unlikely to find at other Mexican restaurants, next to a few favorites (Guacamole made table-side). Very creative cocktails. Portions are tapas-sized, but vary in actual size. Service can be attentive and friendly when the place is not too busy—but it does get very busy (and noisy) at certain times. Definitely pricier than most conventional Mexican places, but well worth it if you like unusual dishes, or unusual variations on familiar dishes.

Service was slow, had to wait a while for a server to acknowledge us and the food came out slowly compared to those around us. Our server only came by a couple times, we had to get her attention to get more water. \n\nFood was delicious as always!! Fresh and great flavors. Love this place.

The bartenders were very busy but I noticed the overcharged the people before me. I tried to get another round of drinks for happy hour but there was no bartender to be found. Minutes after happy hour was over he appeared. When I ordered a few minutes after 6 he told me happy hour was over. I pled the drink order but then he overcharged me for one extra drink. Since I was treating a friend I was too embarrassed to call him on it. I think this is all a strategy to make bigger tips. I was very disappointed. This was the second time I had bad service at the bar.\n\nI checked with the hostess but she did not record that I showed up. I asked her twice to make sure I was checked in. I called the restaurant and got an answer machine so I left a message saying please tell OpenTable that I did show up.\n\nPlease forward this message to the restaurant. Jose Andres would not be happy !\n\nMaria

From the host, who asked if we wanted a 'quiet table' to our server who made some recommendations from the lunch specials' menu, we were able to talk shop and share the small plates. Definitely worth walking two blocks south of Chinatown for this experience.

In all honesty, our lunch was rather disappointing. My ceviche was very spicy, but that was about it. Hardly any dressing, just a couple of slices of fish. The tacos were just ok. We had higher expectations given Jose Andres reputation. Oh well.

Very disappointed on this visit. Have been to Oyamel several times before and loved it but the food was overly salty, slapdashedly prepared and way overpriced for the portion sizes. Drinks are ridiculously expensive. A huge bill, not satisfied at the end of it and desperately thirsty for hours afterwards.

I went to Oyamel hoping for a delicious dinner. Sadly, the meal was the opposite. First, the noise level in the restaurant made for an atmosphere in which I felt as though I had to yell at my family to talk with them. Secondly, the service was inconsistent and unpleasant. Luckily, the manager was very nice and helpful when we complained because our drinks took 30 minutes to arrive. The food was average at best. Nothing we ate was anything noteworthy. There are many other better places in the District to try. My advice? Stick to the Washingtonian 100 Best List.

We had a great dinner! We had a great selection of tapas items - with ahi tuna ceviche, a delicious hearts of palm salad, plantain fritters and a great selection of tacos - we had more than enough food. There was a very comprehensive allergic menu that really made eating at Oyamel a pleasure for my daughter who has some serious food restrictions. Don't forget to offer a margarita - I recommended he Oyamel - delicious!

Horrible service. Waited 40 minutes for a margarita. Waiter was unapologetic and rude. Had to ask 4 times for a fork after everyone ignored us. Bathroom was worse than a gas station. Manager came over and apologized but at that point the service had ruined the meal. Food was good but not worth the experience.

A touristy and unauthentic mexican-style restaurant. However, if you are touring the Smithsonian and surrounds it may be OK for appetizers. Very noisy. The food is the low point: over-priced, bland mexican style food made with top-shelf ingredients. The flavor profile is not in-sync with mexican street food.

We often go to Oyamel before the theatre. It is always very crowded, and we usually end-up having to eat at the bar. There are two nice bars. This time, we made a reservation in advance, and sat in the dining room. The server wasn't good. He was rude (would not provide 2 salsas for the table) and very unaccommodating, and didn't listen to the requests (no ice in drink) and they don't have many vegetarian options. That being said, most of the bartenders have always been accommodating in the past when we sit at the bar. It's always very crowded pre-theatre, but I like the restaurant overall.

Oyamel has small plates based on Mexican cuisine. The ingredients are authentic and beautifully prepared. Their Caesar Salad is the best I have found in the US, and the chicken soup is absolutely delicious. Our server was helpful and friendly, and the timing for food delivery to the table was excellent. Ambience is lively, but it's possible to talk at the table without shouting.

First impressions of a restaurant are important to me, and Oyamel definitely gets an A+.\nEven though the restaurant was packed, the hostess greeted me warmly, and then another hostess, seeing that I was on crutches, immediately took a bag that I was carrying and guided me through the restaurant ensuring that I made it safely to the table.\nOur waitress Charnish could not have been more welcoming and attentive--she was well-versed with each menu item, and served us promptly even though there was a party of twelve right next to us.\nAll five of us raved about the chips and homemade guacamole, and our individual dishes were so unique and flavorful. I greatly appreciated the vegetarian options, especially the cactus paddles which I had never tasted before.\nIt was my son's birthday and they served him an incredible dessert with a candle-he said it was his best birthday ever, and he is now 28. \nIt was quite a special night and I hope to return to Oyamel very soon.

I have to say that we were disappointed with our selections. My husband described the sauce for the chicken taco as being akin to plain spaghetti sauce, and my braised beef taco was tougher than I expected. Also, the guacamole wasn't worth the price. \n\nThat said, we LOVED the complimentary chips and salsa, as well as the camerones dish -- enough that we'd go back for those. And the service was really good.

We made a reservation for 7pm, didn't get seated until 7:20pm. When we did get seated, we were at a table of 2 right next to another table of 2. We were closer to the guys at the table next to us than we were to each other!\n\nWe hadn't eaten here before, so we asked the waitress if we could order like tapas: a few plates at a time a few times. She said absolutely not. Ok, fine, not a huge deal. So we ordered some chilaquiles, a few tacos, and some vegetable plates to share. Chilaquiles came out by themselves first, and they were REALLY REALLY good. We finished them before anything else came out, which were the Papas al mole. They were actually not that great... they were cold and soggy and mole tasted like beef gravy. Then another ten minutes passed and we got our 4 tacos. The pork belly one was phenomenal, the hongos one was very good. The brisket one was good and the fish one was pretty good. After finishing those, we asked the waitress if the other vegetable was coming out... and she rudely asked ' so you want it off your bill?' We said yes but then 5 minutes later, she brought it out to us cold. We told her to please take it back and take it off our bill. She wordlessly picked it up, dropped our check on the table and walked away. No 'sorry about the mixup' or 'do you want dessert'. No manager came by to see if everything was ok... we were polite about it, maybe we needed to pitch a fit for anyone to care?\n\nLong story short, chilaquiles and taco were great. Vegetables were meh. Service was dreadful. Drinks were pretty expensive but very weak. If there's a next time, we'll probably get takeout instead!

I've been to Oyamel many times over the last few years. Since my last visit in January of 2016 the negative changes I experienced were: much louder throughout the restaurant, the food wasn't nearly as good, especially the guacamole and chips. The food came to our table with long gaps between servings leaving one in our party without food for 20 minutes while the rest of us ate. It was a Friday night and the restaurant was packed, maybe it would be better during the week. Our servers were attentive and pleasant, I'd guess the problem was in the kitchen.

The service was fantastic. The waiter knew the menu and the dishes and helped us order. The atmosphere was very modern but the chairs at our table were plastic and very uncomfortable. The food was good but not as tasty as we expected. It was a little pricey since we were encouraged to get two or three dishes each since they were small. We really ordered too much food. Overall it was a good meal and nice experience.

A bit of a rocky start given that we had made lunch reservations and still had to wait at least 10 minutes before we got a table. The table wasn't clean when we sat down, but the waitress (Olivia) quickly saw what was happening and sent the manager over who bought us a round of drinks.\n\nAfter that, everything progressed on an improvement trajectory and our waitress did a great job. Loved the food. Restaurant was a little loud even for this 20-something (but I'm admittedly a secret Old Man.) Despite having told both the hostess and our waiter that we were waiting for the last member of our party to come (and potentially grab a bite to eat) at the end of the evening, our waiter and his colleagues took away not just all plates & cutlery but all water as well - and displayed other less-than-subtle signals that our party was no longer welcome and should vacate - shortly after the 1st check was closed, even though Oyamel was to be open for almost 2 more hours. Although Oyamel's food was interesting (grasshopper tacos, cactus paddles, etc.) and decor even more so (butterflies galore), this was just the last of a series of events that made our party feel unwelcome.

I've been going to Oyamel for a few years now, usually before Caps games. I love the food and margaritas, especially the pork belly and chicken tacos. My only complaint, and it is significant, is that service is very inconsistent. 10+ minutes at the table prior to anyone taking a drink order, and then very infrequent check backs. Drinks can take 15 minutes due to an overloaded bar. Of course, I'm there at busy times, but I think a Jose Andres restaurant should strive for better more consistent service than what Oyamel has been delivering lately.

I've been to Oyamel before on a normal night and had a great time, but this time I went with a group of 10 on NYE night and it was awful. It took forever to seat us (so we were of course crowding the front area since we received no direction and only dirty looks from the hostesses) and it took forever to take our orders. We were served margaritas and guacamole, but it again took forever to take our order for the prix-fixe menu. After waiting an hour for any food, we complained and they said they would 'bring out what they had' and that it was taking too long due to our dietary restrictions. We had not asked for ANY adjustments in the food, so that was an illegitimate excuse. After bringing out whatever terrible scraps of food they had in the kitchen and downing our margaritas, we left HUNGRY and dissatisfied. I'm extremely disappointed with the poor level of service and professionalism. Quite frankly, they put quite a damper on what was supposed to be a special evening with friends.

Dined Apr 29 2018

Unbelievably disappointing. We went here to celebrate a special occasion and had an absolutely horrible time. The food was mediocre at best. The service was worse than one would get at Waffle House. For example, the food was slow to arrive and did not arrive to all guests at the same time. Often there was one or more of us not eating. They would not clear plates unless we asked. We literally hit the point with dirty dishes on our table that there was no more room. They expected us to use the same fork for all of the first four courses. We had to ask for clean silverware. At this price point (this place is not inexpensive) they should be busting their tails to make sure everything is on point. Oh, and the noise…it is no exaggeration to say that I could not hear the person next to me without leaning over toward her. With a bill of $450 for five of us, it was a complete failure and waste of money. I intend to tell everyone possible of my experience and I am sure my wife will do the same.

We visited early afternoon on a Saturday and I was happy to see brunch/breakfast items on the menu. As I'm pescatarian, the meat filled menu is a challenge but the hubs loves it so there we were. I had asked for a particular dish to be modified and was shocked when our server reported 'the chef doesn't really feel like changing the dish'. Even if that was the case (what chef really does?) don't say those exact words and offend your guest. I decided at that moment that this was my last visit to this restaurant. I've been to amazing restaurants all over the world and have never once been told 'nah, he just doesn't feel like it'! \nIt didn't help that our meals (ranchos habeneros) didn't taste as good as our other meals from this place. Perhaps because the breakfast foods aren't their strong suit? The raspberry Bellini was so delicious as were the nachos which essentially was our meal, so not a complete disaster. But when you dine at a Jose Andreas restaurant, you expect to be wowed and satisfied and when you aren't it's a pretty big let down.

We love this place and have been here about 6 times in the last three years. We live out of town and try to savor the Oyamel flavors when we come to DC. We love the fresh salads with jicama, the guacamole made at the table and the margaritas with salted air. The chips are light with a nice salty twist of flavor on them and the salsa has a smoked flavor that balances out the chips. There are just enough changes to the menu to keep it fun and interesting, surprise finds are nice. I'm sad to say that it is time for a restaurant re-do. The bathrooms are worn out, faucets broken and the carpet leading to them - in tough shape. We had chipped glass plates, more than one, and this was disconcerting. The manager needs to talk with the owner, time for some updates. The staff is efficient and very thoughtful. The food is yummy!

Went to dinner here while in town for my son's TEDX Foggy Bottom program. Took my husband, 2 sons and my niece. We had heard about this place because the President went here with the First Lady. Well, I can see why! There were many authentic Mexican dishes, all served as small plates. Our waiter advised us to each order about 3 small plates so we can share, so that's what we did. The only menu item that can't be shared are the mini tacos. Each of us got our own taco (mine was the baby pig taco, yum!)\nWe started with the fresh guacamole made table side. Amazing! I also ordered the Oyamel margarita. This isn't any ordinary margarita. It's made from fresh juices, not a mix, with a sea silt foam on top and it was divine!\nPlates we shared included 2 types of quesadillas, plantains, chicken mole, flank steak and chicken enchiladas. All were exquisite! When in town, be sure to come here, but book in advance for a Saturday night! I think I made our reservations about 1 month before arriving. \nWhen you leave this place your happy tummy will be singing Ole!

Food: 4 Stars\nService: 0 Stars\n\nWe had an absolute awful luncheon at Oyamel. This was a business lunch, so had reservations and we were seated immediately. The server came over and took our drink orders. He then took 10+ minute to bring us our drinks and water. He was trying to serve drinks to several tables at once, and overloaded his tray, so after he served us our drinks he promptly spilled all the remaining drinks (at least 4 full glasses) all over the floor. He cleaned that up and then 10 minutes later he came back and finally took our lunch orders. \n\nWe all order straight off the lunch special menu. About 10 minutes after we ordered the food started to arrive and we realized that many things were missing. The sandwiches were supposed to come with salads, but they didn't. I only received one of the three small plates that I ordered. Our waiter had disappeared. When he finally came back to check on us we told him that the salads were missing and that my small plates had not arrived. He shrugged and suggest that the salads came separately after the sandwiches, like a 'dessert'. Also, he said he would check on my small plates. About 5 minutes later the salads and one more small plate arrived. The waiter didn't come back to check. \n\nFinally everyone else had finished their meals except for me, because I was still waiting for the final small plate to arrive. Our waiter was nowhere to be seen so we spoke with the manager. The manager spoke with the waiter who finally came back and apologized and said that management had given us a discount for all the errors. So we sat there, waiting for the waiter to fix the bill and the food. And we sat.... Finally, the waiter brought the bill. As we were paying, my last small plate finally arrived; a full hour after I had ordered it. \n\nThe food, when it arrived, was fresh and tasty, but there are far too many great restaurants in DC to put up with such poor service.

Seevice was very fast, maybe too fast as we wanted to linger and savor the flavors and the moment -- which was special. But it was a weekday lunch, and we appreciate the restaurant's desire to get people in and out. The black bean soup was delicious, as was the cactus salad, though the portion was modest. The chile en nogada tasted yummy--the pork was beautifully seasoned--but the dish was not very warm. The tres leches dessert was excellent.\nOverall a very good experience, despite my criticisms. Our party of three had a Sunday brunch here. Starting with the negatives first: The menu is hard to read, it needs a better layout and more readable fonts. We were seated next to the servers' bussing room which was not comfortable. The server said we should order between three and four plates per person, however, this was a scam because one plate per person was more than enough and we had a hard time finishing the second plates that we had ordered. Now on the positive side, the food was very good and more interesting than most run-of-the-mill Mexican places. Aside from the scam of trying to get us to over order, the servers were pleasant and attentive. The noise level was moderate. I gave it a good rating because, if you follow my warnings above, you should have a good dining experience.

When asked if we could move, we were denied access to the next room over because it was getting closed off for the evening, even though it was still at 80% capacity and they weren't closing for another two hours.\n\nWhile the food is good and reasonably priced (the exorbitant drink prices are obviously there to compensate), the layout is better suited to the bar crowd, not those hoping to enjoy a quiet, intimate evening. The service is also decidedly sub-par. \n\nThere are plenty of finer Spanish/Mexican options in the neighborhood and I recommend dining at one of those.

Wonderful food and a great atmosphere. Complex flavors in the food and great presentation. Definitely a find in DC and some of the best Mexican food I've had, and I'm a real fan of that. Excellent guacamole. (The medium would be considered spicy elsewhere. It's excellent, but be advised.)\n\nDo make a reservation. Oddly, we showed up at 5:45 on a Sunday and the restaurant was about two-thirds full. We thought we'd get seated as a walk-in, but we were turned away (not very pleasantly, either) by the hostess. We walked out onto the sidewalk, popped open the Open Table app, made a reservation for 6 pm, and were seated at a very nice table. Not sure what that was all about, but happy to get my 100 points. Bottom line: attitude at front of house was off-putting, but once we got seated, we had a great time.

Yes, it's a bit noisy and tables are jammed in everywhere but the creative and well-executed (mostly) vision of Latin American/Mexican made for a very enjoyable evening out. Definitely will be back for more ceviche- especially the tuna. Noted that there is a small bar for ceviche which would be fun to visit. Also loved the stuffed Poblano pepper. The potatoes brava and plaintain/squash did not live up to the delicious description so we'll try something else next time. Reservations are must as this place was jammed (was there a Verizon Center event?) Great, friendly, attentive service. We'll be back.

We went on a Saturday night and the place was bumpin. Our server could have come by a few more times, but I understand that it was busy and there was a ton happening - when we asked one of the food runners something we would have normally asked the server it all got taken care of beautifully. The tacos were less exciting than the rest of the menu but we had an awesome dinner. The classic margarita with the salt air and the cafe de olla were both worth coming in for alone.

I've been to Oyamel several times over the past 5 years. This time, the quality of service was notably poorer than before (we were served 2 dishes on chipped and/or cracked plates). I have been here many times but for brunch, drinks or late-night only. This was my first visit during dinner hours, and the experience was highly unsatisfactory due to slow service (45 minutes for tacos) and a dish prepared incorrectly (and when we mentioned this to the server, the server said the chef making the food exclaimed, '...this is why we shouldn't offer this during the dinner time!' or something along those lines. The only highlight was that the manager was extremely accommodating and apologetic about the food that ran late and also comped the drinks on the house to make up for the overall experience.

Took my wife and daughter here to celebrate Valentine's Day. We enjoyed it! The food is excellent! We ate quite a bit. We did not buy any soda or alcohol. Our bill out out to $94, which includes the 20% tip I left. We did not have anything to take home with us, since the restaurant specializes in small plates. But I enjoyed every bite of everything I ate.\n\nI would say that the drink prices aren't great, but are typical for DC bar scene. So having two margaritas and two glasses of wine could have easily added $45 to our bill, if you include the tip in the total. \n\nSo my suggestion is go, eat plenty, and drink glasses of water only, if you want to save a little money.

Nobody told me about their 3 for lunch special. Had the awesome black bean soup with a plus up for that avocado, beautiful mahi mahi cerviche and a pork chorizo taco. Really the soup and cerviche would have been filling enough (thanks chips and salsa!). The taco was not standout, but I've had better there in the past. The chorizo was a little rubbery and the pork chewy-ish. Not bad, but next to the other standouts you notice. My colleague had the tres leches cake (I chose all savory, but there is a desert option) and it must have been good because it was all gone.

Would definitely repeat. Fun atmosphere, killer food, and great drinks. Friendly staff as well. Here is what we had:\nTableside Guacamole: The only thing I wouldn't order again. Guac was fine, but not phenomenal.\nCeviche de atún Pacífico - great flavors that were well balanced. If you like tuna, can't miss. \nPapas al mole: Perfectly fried and a rich mole. Have to eat fast since the mole makes the fries a little soggy.\nQuesadilla de chicharrones: Why I'm glad I don't belong to a religion that bans pork\nGorditas de pato: Three little masa cakes topped with some great duck confit. Just enough spice to balance out the richness of the duck.\nCarnitas estilo Michoacán con salsa de tomatillo: Only ordered one of these tacos, but could have eaten 4 since they were so good. \nChurros con chocolate for dessert: perfectly fried with the right amount of sugar and cinnamon. Chocolate for dunking was very good as well. I would maybe like a little darker on the chocoate, but that is preference of mine.

Two of the three of us had eaten at Oyamel happily ,many times before but this time the food did not meet our expectations. The guacamole, which was prepared by our table, was almost inedible. It had no spice and the addition of cheese which was awful. Other dishes seemed hastily prepared and did not have the excitement of meals in the past. It was a Monday night and, while busy, the restaurant was not as packed as on weekends. Two other Jose Andres restaurants, Zaytinya and Jaleo, have maintained the high standards they have had from the beginning. I hope that Oyamel can be more careful going forward to take more care in preparing dishes. Perhaps doubling the size of the restaurant has pushed it beyond its capacity. It has always been my favorite restaurant. I hate to see it go down hill.

When a waiter arrived with menus, we were told we would have to order, not from our table, but get up and walk to the bar, only to order from the SAME waiter who literally made me walk with him to the bar to put in my order. \n\nIf I had anticipated this kind of service, it would have not been a big deal. However, typically, when I make a reservation on open table for a nicer restaurant, such as Oyamel, I expect better service or for open table to tell me that the menu and service would be limited. \n\nThe food here is good and they also have good cocktails. We enjoy Oyamel, and have been there many times for the creative menu, varied flavors, and notable vegetable offerings. One caution: in many fish dishes, the spices overwhelm the underlying flavor, so that all you taste is the sauce, not the fish. Maybe this is the style of Mexican fish cooking. Maybe this is the result of applying high-flavor meat preparations to fish. Maybe this style appeals to people who think fish is too bland. I don't know. One other caution: once the place fills up, it can be difficult to concentrate on the dishes, much less carry on a conversation. If noise turns you on, fine. If not, go early, go late, or find an isolated table away from the bar.

My mom even tried a bite of the grasshopper taco, which is more a story than a must-have dish. The margarita of the day was beet and hibiscus(?), which was really good, though my mom's classic margarita wasn't as tasty as I remembered them being. The meal would have been better with some ceviche, since it's one of their specialties, but my mom doesn't like it. \n\nThe only thing that was a letdown was something I had before, the papas al mole. I love mole, but this is basically soggy fries with some sauce. We had these the last time I was there and I forgot to pass on them. Still, an overall good experience, just not as fun as it has been other times. And I have to mention that the service was prompt and our waiter was very nice.

As vegetarians we are always looking for great restaurants that are friendly to our diet and we have now a new friend in Oyamel. We had several choices in the small plates offered (but only 1 taco choice). What makes the food here really sparkle is the sauces. Each plate had a different taste. Outstanding in our book was the Swiss Chard, the Brussels Sprouts and the lovely beans cooked with veggies. Chips and salsa come warm and fresh. Clearly the kitchen knows what it is doing. We had a very good waiter who took excellent care of us. Much appreciated.

I've been to Oyamel a few times and love the food. But somehow my request for an outdoor table didn't make it to the restaurant, so we got stuck inside on an awkward table in the (very loud) dining area. When an outdoor table opened up, the hostess kindly moved us outside. But there, the service was awful. I waited for 15+ minutes on both drinks I ordered. I watched the server chat with another table for several minutes while I was waiting on my second drink, grabbed the busboy and asked him to politely interrupt the server and alert him that we needed our check and drink, and when I got back from the restroom, the server was *still* chatting with the same table and the busboy apparently hadn't said anything to him. When I finally interrupted him and told him we were late for a show, the busboy scoffed at me, and the it still took another several minutes to run my credit card. Awful experience.

It is so sad when you go to a new restaurant and you get in love with the food but you don't think about coming back due to bad service. We had this experience at Oyamel... We are huge fans of Jose Andres and we wanted to try this place for the first time. China Chilcano is excellent, Jaleo is great, Zaytinya is the best one! BUT Oyamel... Such a disaster! Our server was extremely bad, he asked for our IDs after we got our drinks, he said that he forgot to asked before and he didn't want to get fire. He took our first round of food and that was it, we didn't see this guy for the next hour. We had to ask for water, spoons to share, and we all finish our drinks and we wanted to order more but we couldn't find him. We decided to ask for the check. I wanted to give my feedback to the management instead of giving a bad review but the two managers I saw didn't seem they care about our table. \n\nAgain, food was absolutely amazing! One advice: don't let bad apples ruining your restaurant...

Bland food. My wife is of Mexican descent, born and raised in East Los Angeles. I have spent many years working in Los Angeles and Santa Ana. This is the least 'Mexican' Mexican food I've ever had. Plain with no heat. The taco was okay. The salsa was bland, y tamale pollo con verde was not very good. The masa had no flavor nor did the green sauce (tomatillo? salsa verde?). The small plates were expensive. \n\nI would have called it the plainest Mexican food I've ever had, but days later I went to La Paz in Frederick, Maryand. Now THAT's horrible Mexican food. The salsa was stewed tomatoes with jalepno juice.\n\nI'm sure it is unique and good for 'far-from-Mexico-and-Mexicans' Washington D.C. Capitol area gringoes. No soy un hueso. I do not doubt the chef's heritage or skills, but this was neither true street-Mexican food nor cuisine. It is not Abuelita's comida. If you want Mexican cuisine, try the Javier's Restaurants in Orange County (Newport Beach and Irvine), Las Vegas and Cabo San Lucas. THAT'S Mexican Cuisine!

I decided to dine at Oyamel for two reasons: the ambience looked nice whenever I walked by, and it offered a late night menu. On the website, the late night menu starts on 11:00pm on Saturday. Upon arriving and being seated, I asked about the late night menu and was told it was only offered at the bar area. The bartender greeted us and I mentioned that we wanted to order from the late night menu. She sternly replied 'it doesn't start until midnight'. At this point I was very confused. I mentioned what was listed on the website and she replied 'that's a typo'.\n\nSomething didn't feel right. I asked the hostess and she confirmed my suspicion, the late night menu in fact starts at 11:00pm. She confirmed with the manager. \n\nThe story doesn't end there. Our server approached us to take our order. We started to order from the late night menu and he said no. I told him it has already been verified by the hostess and he respond 'she's not the manager'. Needless to say, at this point I wanted to leave. The server finally received approval and took our order. There was a noticeable look of disdain on his face.\n\nI really hoped for a better experience as this was my first time dining here.

We had dinner reservations but the concert we were attending got out much later than anticipated so we missed our reservation. I called as soon as I could. It took at least 20 rings before someone picked up. We were told that after 10pm they had a late night menu. We didn't know where else to go and the reviews I had read were favorable so we went. When we got there, there no longer was any dining room staff nor hostess. We were told to sit anywhere in the bar and order from the bar. The place was fairly busy and it got busier while we were there. After the reviewing the late night menu (tacos and sandwiches, which was fine), I went to the bar to order but since there was only one bartender, I had to wait. He was serving drinks and taking food orders from 2 other people as well. We had to ask twice to get a set up for the 3rd person in our party (the table was set for 2 when we sat down). When our food order finally arrived, one of our orders was missing. It took another full 10 minutes to get the one taco that was missing from our order. The food was decent but the lack of service left us flat. The entire time we were there, I saw 4 people working, bringing out the food, passing water and cleaning tables. I have no idea why at least one of these people couldn't have been a waiter or waitress. it was a let down after a wonderful concert. \nPerhaps it's better during the dinner hour.

Celebrating my friend's birthday, we ordered the 'Experience' option. It was 9 courses (small plates) shared between two of us, including dessert. The food was good, some things better than others. The house-made corn tortillas were near-perfect. The Ceviche was fairly fresh. The dessert was the best part of the meal, a chocolate sorbet (not sweet, bitter and rich) and a mango-puree Mexi-pound cake. The lamb tacos were too sweet but not bad. For drinks, we had the non-alcoholic coconut-lime water, which is made fresh at the bar and is truly excellent. BIG down side, both my friend and I had suspicious nausea the next morning, his was much worse than mine. Can't blame it on anything in particular but it was pretty anti-climatic. Small down side, the volume level around 7:30 was quite loud, it was hard to hear, even across our little table. Overall, a good experience, but I won't go back because of the nausea.

What the hell happened to Oyamel??? My last visit was in February and it was great. However after this experience I will not be going back. We ordered 8 different dishes - the taste ranged from bad to mediocre at best. EVERYTHING was incredibly salty to the point where I felt like I needed to drink an entire glass of water after each bite. Too bad the waiter was nowhere to be found for the majority of the meal - twice we had to ask a passing table clearer to refill our water. Everything we ordered tasted like salt and undercooked, rubbery tortilla. Be it the pork belly quesadilla, braised local brisket tacos, enchilada de pollo, etc - we couldn't tell the difference - it was all salt and tortilla. There are too many other good places to eat in Penn Quarter - I wouldn't spend my money here again. Left disappointed and dehydrated.

The food was delicious and the decor/atmosphere was charming. The service was extremely slow; it was almost impossible to get attention from any server, let alone our own, and it was just as challenging to get our water glasses refilled. Those issues aside, the meal was mostly very tasty and innovative. Some of the tacos were very dry. The pomegranate margarita with salt foam was especially yummy.

I have been to Oyamel before and thought the poor (slow and distracted) service, mediocre food, and overpriced drinks was a fluke. As we entered we were taken to our seat. As I looked around I saw a few empty booths and and had requested to be sat there instead since it was not busy and there was no wait. The person that led us to the table said it was for 4 or more people... just as I sat down a few minutes later 2 guest came in and the same thing requested the booth and got it. I was put off that we were seated in a corner when asked to sit somewhere else. The whole time I want there there were two extra booths that were never used. Because of this we ended up not having a full meal. Instead left after we had already ordered some drinks, chips and Salas's, as well as an appetizer. We decided to go somewhere else for lunch.. \n\nNote: give your customers what they want. \n\nWill not go back there nor will I recommend this place to anyone.

We went with a group of 6 for brunch, so it was pretty busy. I was happy to see that they had some egg items, and got the huevos rancheros which I really liked. It was quite busy so the service was a little slow; one of our group ordered a beer and finished most of the meal before it arrived. Two of us got ceviche, which was a little hotter than anticipated; both of us like hot food, but both had trouble finishing. It seemed overall that people liked the food; the guacamole we shared was a hit. The noise level in the small room that they seated us in quite high, so it was hard to talk across the table, and the service was a little slow I think because of the holiday. But overall we enjoyed it, and I would go back for brunch another day to try it when it is calmer.

Oyamel sports a wide variety of foods from different places in Mexico. Michoacan, \nOaxaca, and Puebla were all well represented with delicious soups, salads and an extensive array of tacos. The dishes were small, not unlike tapas, so our table filled up with plates, and splitting was not real practical. Dropped in for a light meal after seeing 'Tartuffe' at the Harman Hall a couple blocks north. We started with Guacamole, which we requested be made spicy but proved bland. Inferior to that at Rosa Mexicano up the street. She got the Pollo Mole and was disappointed by its size, which was not even half a Cornish hen rather than the half chicken promised. Took us a while to recognize the chocolate in the sauce. She also got the fried Brussels Sprouts, which were tasty. I got the black bean soup and, after a long delay, the Chamoy Ceviche. My parents were in town and we were seeing a show at the Shakespeare Theater, so thought it was a perfect chance to try Oyamel. Overall, it was a disappointment. \n\nAmbiance - Easily, far and away, the LOUDEST restaurant I have ever been in. We literally had to yell at each other to be heard, and sometimes even that didn't work. I couldn't even order for myself because I was seated furthest away (in our party of FOUR) from the waiter and he couldn't hear me. It was really off putting to just sit without being able to converse in that cacophony. \n\nService - Had a reservation but we weren't seated for 20 mins or so. Most tapas places I've been are really quick on the food delivery but we had to wait quite a bit for our dishes. \n\nFood - decent but not remarkable. The guacamole was really good. My dad loves mole so we ordered a few dishes with mole. I normally really like it, but the anise was overpowering. I found the fries (Papas al mole) more tolerable than the chicken (pollo con mole poblano), since there was some cream and queso fresco to cut the mole. The garlic shrimp (camarones al mojo de ajo negor) was phenomenal and my dad was talking about the scallop dish for days afterward (cayo con salsa negra). My favorite dish was the Brussels sprouts (col de bruselas estilo San Quintin). We also had the duck confit (gorditas de pato) and they were subpar. We tried a few tacos and were totally underwhelmed by them. (Taco pescado Baja California, Carnitas estilo Michoacan con salsa de tomatillo, taco de suadero) Overall, the only ones I'd reorder were the shrimp and brussels sprouts, but I'd rather go to Zaytinya for their brussels anyway!

If you were to take your favorite Mexican restaurant and refurbish the interior to match a more modern style with a lot of the same traditional Mexican elements, have the drink and food menu devised by someone who is not afraid to be creative with ingredients and flavors but still just building on traditional Tex-Mex/Mexican food staples, and place the restaurant in central DC, then you would have Oyamel.\n\nThe decor of the restaurant has a lot of art you might see in other Mexican restaurants but it doesn't feel like it was bought from a surplus store (aka the decorations look like they were hand picked and placed in the restaurant with a little bit of inspiration). Now this obviously isn't as important as the food, but it certainly added to the dining experience.\n\nThe drinks: above and beyond having your classic margarita, Oyamel boasts a large variety of different types of margaritas with different central flavors for those who might want to mix it up a bit.\n\nThe food: I think what I liked most about their menu was that I felt like I could have either a tapas style meal with a lot of little plates or I could have a classic appetizer, main, dessert dinner. Oyamel has a lot of delicious vegetable plates for vegetarians and for appetizers alongside a very delicious table-made guacamole. Their tacos are also very well made and Oyamel has a large selection of different types of meats that can be placed in them (crickets and beef tongue included, both of which were delicious although the cricket taco Chapulines was a bit salty...). The deserts were also delicious and could be paired with a selection of tequilas. \n\nOverall, if you like Mexican dining, but feel like if you've been to one Mexican restaurant you've been to all of them, then Oyamel is the place to go! The quality and diversity of food choices is here without having to pay out the nose.

The reservation was for a quiet table for three for a birthday celebration on a Thursday evening. First we were seated in a booth in the front (very noisy because of a lively bar crowd). We asked to be relocated to a quieter table as originally requested and were re-seated in the back area of the restaurant. However, the vent above our table produced such cold air (as if intentionally piped in from outside) that we had to put our winter coats back on. We did not look forward to eating with our coats on and asked the server if he could send the manager to resolve this problem. He nodded 'yes' but the manager never arrived. When we spotted a recently-vacated table that was not located under the cold-air vent, we moved (for a third time) on our own. The area was, thankfully, less chilly. \n The server finally arrived to take our menu requests, including drinks. The special 'salt air' margaritas ($12.00 each) were more salt air than drink and did not arrive with chips until after several main food items had been served. We felt we missed the anticipated appetizer stage to the meal. The Papas a mole ('José Andrés’ favorite potato fries in a mole poblano sauce of almonds, chiles and a touch of chocolate, topped with Mexican cream and queso fresco') sounded delectable but were scarcely distinguishable from ordinary french fries. Several other dishes were more successful, though less so than their tantalizing descriptions on the menu (pescado con mostaza-recado negro blackened seasonal fish--was barely blackened). The server seemed confused about who had ordered what. We left as soon as possible after eating the dishes we had requested, not staying for dessert and coffee and regretting that our anticipated birthday celebration had been utterly soured. We will not return to Oyamel.

We ordered drinks, guacamole and ceviche. After a long delay I went to the bar and ordered and paid for our drinks bringing them back to the table where our original drink order had yet to be delivered. Thus, the start was not good.\nThe guacamole arrived and was prepared table side...the best I have had...not over spiced, but just right. The Hawaiian ceviche was a fairly small portion and even though made fresh from the ceviche bar was a on the 'fishy' side. We split a roasted beet salad which was unusual and unusually good. For entrees we ordered enchilladas and tomales both of which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. As the title suggests, I went here with a friend for Restaurant Week lunch after the snow storm. We got there right at noon, and the place was not very full. It picked up a little later, so if you don't have a reservation, get there early. The Restaurant Week deal was great- a ton of delicious food for a relatively inexpensive price. Overall great experience!

The food was delicious and interesting, and the service was very good. The problem is that on the Saturday evening it was so noisy we couldn't relax and enjoy our meal, and we couldn't always hear each other talking. There were only three of us at our table, and we were in a smallish room at the back which we thought might not be as noisy as the front. Unfortunately it was loud, other diners were shouting, and it didn't get any better. It also felt chaotic. It didn't feel fun, just terribly noisy. It might be better for late night dining, or on a weeknight. I doubt I will go back. It's a shame because the food was really very good.

We wanted to try Oyamel because Jaleo is one of our favorites. Made reservations, got seated right away. Ordered drinks-my drink order was incorrect. Ordered 4 small plates-received 3. While waiting for the 4th plate we asked for the menu again to order more food because the 3 plates we ate were great. The waitress never returned to our table. We saw her and tried to get her attention for about 15 mins but she never looked our way. We got the attention of a worker walking by and asked him about the 4th plate. He checked and it was never ordered. We were a bit upset at this point and asked for the check. The manager came over and comped our meal which was very respectful as we would have paid for what we had. We may try Oyamel again because the food was very good and we wanted to try more but didn't because we couldn't get a menu....

We like all of Jose Andres' restaurants and have never had a bad meal in any of them. Oyamel combines Jose's talents as a chef and some of the special tastes of Mexican and Central American food. We love guacamole, ceviche, some of the special vegetables and fruits of the area, and the combination of peppery bite and savory flavoring. The brisket tacos were excellent, as well. I will keep it to the service, as the food is customarily fresh and well presented. All was well until the main course was concluded. With water glasses empty and the table uncleared, our waiter was MIA. After about 5 minutes he came to freshen the water, but then disappeared. Finally, a good 10 minutes later he arrived with the check, although my lunch companion wanted to order dessert. He then disappeared -- again -- and the only way I got service was by approaching the manager. He then went on the prowl for the waiter, rather than getting someone to clear the plates and offer dessert and coffee.

It seems that Oyamel may be slipping. The ceviche was well prepared, but the non-fish elements dominated, making the dish seem a little stingily prepared. Scallops on black beans - the scallops were lovely but the beans were a bit pasty and uninspired. Perhaps, in expanding, their kitchen has lost some of its special touches.

As a long time fan of Oyamel, I've been going to their Day of the Dead Festival for years! Enjoying it more with each passing occurrence! Imaging my surprise and great disappointment to find out that it was only for DINNER!? And there was nothing available for lunch! \n\nThat I may understand to a certain degree as food prep takes time and planning, but to me there was NO EXCUSE for the special drink menu to not be available in the mid day! I had taken a large group of friend there, expecting to spend a couple of hours and a couple of hundred dollars... we were sadly done in around 30 minutes and less than $100!!! \n\nyour loss Oyamel! One of the worst meals we have had. I went for my one year anniversary with my boyfriend and the service was horrific. We then didn't get our first round of tapas for another 15 minutes, and by then we were so done we cancelled the rest. In a 2 hour span of time, we only had guacamole and one tapa a piece, just because it took THAT long for the servers to bring us food / respond to what we needed. It was a horrible experience. Also the Mackerel ceviche was very good. As a person that have try a lot of Mexican food here in USA and in Mexico itself, the food is quite authentic and they do a good job to keep the Mexican flavors and elevated then for fine dining. We are big fans of Oyamel, and once again the food was on all cylinders! We had a number of scrumptious plates including the crab ceviche, fried plantain, Brussels sprouts (it's really a two-plate portion), and a 'gazpacho.' I won't recommend the chayote dish, as it was pretty bland and best defined as 'crunchy.' We missed out on two plates because we were too full, but it was no problem to cancel the order.\n\nService was poorer than usual, but still adequate. No one talked to us for about 20 minutes and we didn't even see our waiter until mid-meal; a manager took our order. The water glasses remained full, but on two occasions we couldn't identify someone to make a request. Finally, one of us ordered meat dishes and the other vegetarian. Nearly all of the meat dishes came out before any of the veggie dishes. This showed that the restaurant failed to acknowledge that the diners had ordered very different food slates so that they could balance the order of the plates better. We'll flag it for them next time, but it was disappointing nonetheless.\n\nFinally, we wished diners would dress better for a downtown dinner on a Saturday night. Cutoff jean shorts? Weathered baseball cap? Yoga pants? No to all, please.

We are regulars at Jose Andres' restaurants in the area--at least Oyamel, Jaleo, and Zaytinya. We always think about choosing something else, but we return time and again. Most recently, we were sent an email telling us 'what is blooming' and asking us to make a reservation, so we booked and went to Oyamel to try the squash blossom dishes that same weekend.\n\nUpon arrival, we were placed in the back room, despite having a reservation, which was fine, but...odd. There was a DVR not playing on the screen, we couldn't hear the music, and the tables around us had not been cleared.\n\nWhen I inquired about the squash blossom menu, our waiter told us there were no specials, questioned whether or not I was being honest about receiving an email, explained I must be wrong or changing the date I received it, and disappeared. Once he returned, he said, 'We don't usually do specials until 5, but I GUESS I can make an exception...we do have some of those things you want'. It was 4:57. Our reservation was for 5. They sat us early.\n\nWe ordered drinks. Waited more than 20 minutes for them to arrive. We ordered guacamole for the table. It sat there unmade for about 10 minutes. When someone did come to make it, we had not been given chips (and still no drinks, and now, no water).\n\nOnce we ordered, I received all of my food before anyone else got anything, and I had finished most of my meal before my drink arrived. Our server never came back for us to order another round, more plates, dessert/coffee, anything.\n\nWe also waited over 15 minutes to try to get his attention so we could get the bill and leave.\n\nIt was really disappointing, as I had brought friends from out of town to one of my favorite places--and instead, we finished and went somewhere else to finish our evening.

The restaurant is very noisy, so be prepared to speak up, but the place has a nice vibe and the drinks seemed like they would have been well made (we didn't taste them this time around). I think I would recommend going back, but maybe not during restaurant week, in the hope that the service would be better at a less rushed time.

At first glance, it seemed hectic and crowded but that thought was soon overturned. While we did wait a bit after our reservation time to be seated, it was well worth the wait. The first table we were directed to was right next to a large party that had people standing and mingling so our hostess immediately found an alternate table that was perfectly placed. The table-side Guac was tasty but not nearly the Medium heat we requested. We ordered an app of Crispy Brussel Sprouts...delicious and super spicy! A lot of different flavors with the pumpkin seeds, peanuts and lime. We each ordered two items and in the end, this was more than enough food for four people. The fried pork belly quesadillas, sautéed shrimp, Cobi and brisket tacos were all excellent dishes. The Caldo Tlalpeno (chicken soup) was superb and also very spicy. I just can't say enough about all of the unique flavors. The happy hour Oyamel Margarita is a bit small (half glass of liquid, half glass of ice) for $5. The Salt Air Margarita is steep at $12 but absolutely worth every penny. A rare but amazing Tuesday night out!

Oyamel has a fabulous happy hour - which is what we ended up doing, because they were short on wait staff for the dining room. It is VERY noisy, but a fun place with nice drinks a great happy hour bargain.

The noise level was awful. The food is very good, but our experience was not. Not being able to hear the person you are dining with is unacceptable. Oyamel can reduce the noise level, but does not choose to do this. We will not return.

They were out of wines listed and limited list. Food poorly timed - brought before we had our wine. When served it was luke warm and only fair. Waiter tried to make up for kitchen and bar errors. Jaleo was far superior though Oyamel does have more and better ambience options.

I was really disappointed in Oyamel. Hype as best rated Mexican was overrated. We had a lackluster experience. Service was subpar. The food arrived in waves, which was fine until we all realized that most of what we ordered never arrived and we had to ask for it. The waiter apologized but it was awkward that we were never all eating at the same time.

Came here with a large group for my birthday. Hostess was very nice and my friend who got there a little early had a drink at the bar and said bartender was great as well. 6 people were there, so I expected to have to wait until my full party was there but they offered to seat us. Everything was great until our waitress came. She wasn't very friendly early on and just seemed to get more rude as the night went on. She would go for 20+ minutes at a time without checking on us. The gentleman who would come by to refill our drinks took better care of us than she did. The dinner was really great but our waitress' attitude definitely tarnished the evening. I'm not sure if she wasn't putting any effort in because she knew the tip would be included because it was a large group or if this is just her usual bad attitude. I would like to give her the benefit of the doubt that it was just an off day but everyone in my group was courteous and polite, so there is still no excuse for her attitude. I have no plans to ever return to Oyamel, nor recommend it to anyone.

If you are not hungry, then go for the warm chips, the salsa, and some of the best tequila's in town. If you are hungry, then go ahead and enjoy a wonderful selection of small sandwiches, tapas, and egg dishes if you are there for brunch. Yes, it is noisy but in this restaurant it seems to add positively to the ambience .

We were a party of four and all selected the chef's tasting menu, which was an absolute bargain at only $55/person, and with the cocktail pairing at $35 extra you really get your money's worth. The food was outstanding, everything was delicious and well prepared. The cocktails were unique and nicely done. I'm not really a margarita guy, but they brought several throughout the meal and each one was better than the last. The only frustrations we had were with a very large party in the same room as us who decided to command the floor like they had rented the place for a private party (which they hadn't), but you can't really hold the restaurant responsible for that. Also, our server was excellent for the most part, but she disappeared for long periods of time occasionally. Not too much of a problem until it happened when we were waiting for our bill and were trying to get out of there. All in all, highly recommended for the food and friendly service. Next time I'm in the DC area I will definitely go back.

This was my second time dining at this restaurant. The first time, we sat outside but this time, it was to hot to do so. What a difference experience! The noise volume inside is ridiculous! I was having dinner with two other people and we were literally shouting to have a conversation. It made for a stressful dinner. The food it good, though a bit too pricey for what you get, but the noise level ruined the experience for us. I recommend this restaurant if you are able to get an outside table.

I've dined at Oyamel for many years. This was the first time my experience was not great. From the young hostess who seated us to our waiter who seemed overwhelmed with other diners, the service was not what I've encountered in the past. Our water glasses were not refilled until we asked. When we were leaving, one hostess was kind to say thank-you, have a nice day. Yet, the young African hostess who seated us and was also standing there, well, she just turned her head.

Despite having a reservation, we waited over 40 minutes for a table. The hostesses were not very helpful. The noise level was unbearably loud. Once seated, our server was polite, but we couldn't hear him and he couldn't hear us. During the meal, we could hardly hear each other talk. They forgot one of our dishes: the shrimp, though by that point we were happy to get out of there. The other dishes were adequate, but definitely did not live up to the hype. The meatballs were dry, the fries were limp, and only the tuna ceviche stood out as being pretty tasty. The cocktails were really good, however. There were cockroaches running around the bar (several people shrieked when they noticed), which probably isn't that big of a deal, but just sort of added to our general disappointment.

I felt for this trap again… By ordering a pitcher of margaritas, for two people, which was full of ice and neither of us drinking the pitcher could tell we had had even a drop of tequila because the margaritas are so weak in terms of no alcohol. For $50 I expect A good strong drink, not a bunch of water down crap in way too much ice. When Oysmel opened, you could get a great pitcher of margaritas for $38, that had tequilas that you could actually taste. Now it's $50, with ridiculous amount of ice, and so little tequila that 1/2 a pitcher for 1 person doesn't provide the slightest tequila buzz. Waste of money, horrible value, careless and thoughtless preparation but no doubt good for your bottom line. It's insulting to me as I've spent a lot of good money at Oyamel over the years, to see them descend to cheap crap margaritas.

I have visited Oyamel many times and chose it for lunch as I usually like the quick service and food. My surprise when I ordered a shrimp cerviche which came with two shrimp and lost of shredded veggies. This was a $10 appetizer and it was really a poorly executed dish. \nService was ok, but not great even though the place was not crowded. My final note - don't take the server's recommendations. They are not necessarily based on someone's knowledge of the dish. Brussels in a Mexican restaurant, even fried, do not belong on the menu!
