We started with the special squash pumpkin hummus. Best hummus I've ever had! Absolutely delicious and the warm pita is outstanding. Our next favorites are the falafel - 2 orders in fact then the octopus- another phenomenal dish, Branzino and lamb! Yes, we had a good workout the next day but soooooo worth it! My son came to town and this was his requested DC restaurant! Wonderful!

We were really looking forward to this place, but unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. The food was good but nothing to write home about, though the tzatziki was pretty decent. We were stuck in the back by the fireplace, and it was way too bright for a dinner/date setting. Overall I think this is a decent place, but certainly did not live up to his 4.6 star rating.

All our small plates were good, but the imam bayildi was exceptional. Service was brisk, though the waitress missed one order. The decor is clean and interesting, but the noise level is very high. If you have a table for two, you're likely to have close neighbors with raised voices on either side.

We enjoyed our meal that blended the idea of tapas with Lebanese/Mediterranean cuisine. Our service was a little slow, but the staff was professional and courteous and it was a busy night. a great spot for sharing small dishes and tasting a wide variety of Mediterranean, Lebanese, Turkish, Greek dishes. Do not expect to spend much time talking as the noise level is incredible at peak times with the high ceiling acting as an echo amplifier, but the food is delicious - some simple classics like taramasalata are transformed into new experiences. Try the lamb meatballs, hummus, octopus, lambs tongue (!) and kebab meat, the tabouleh, .... A family of 5, we had a good meal here (no wine) for $200, and tried a wide range of dishes.

We tried the chef's tasting menu for $55 per person. What a delicious tasting it was! Everything was small plates but we left satiated. This restaurant is beautiful and bustling. The prices are good for DC. There are many plates under $10, but they recommend you order 2 or 3 each, and share. The waitstaff is great! At busy time, it is loud, but a good loud if that makes sense.

Zaytynia can be a great place if you are sitting at the right place and have the right mindset. The floor plan that looks so stylish from the outside can make some locations feel awkward and isolated. The wait staff was ok, but not everyone had great table-side manners. One young server warmed up and seemed less rude after I engaged her in conversation, but I wish I did not have to be the one trying to improve her day. The food was very good, but it is hard to know what is enough food to order. I guess that's the catch with the 'small plate' fad. It has lost a bit of its initial buzz and luster, but as long as they don't slack on maintenance and cleanliness it should not be hard to keep it fresh. Now, if they could keep the wait staff motivated and happy...

The hosts sat us 25 minutes after our reservation, and even then, it was only because we asked. They then realized they had sat another couple at our intended table and ended up seating us right next to the entrance. When I joked to my husband that we, after making the reservation a fee seems in advance, ended up with the worst table in the house. The hostess, who had been rude from the start, said she thought it was the best seat and that we should be happy with it. The table was scratched and dirty looking and it was incredibly loud. Also, because they were apparently behind in reservations a revolving group or 20-40 guests stood around us waiting to be seated. The ambiance was terrible. The server was very nice, and the food, once it actually got out of the kitchen was fine, but I don't know that if ever go back given the awesome restaurants we do have in the city. This is better left to tourists.

The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. I originally reserved a table for four following a memorial service for a recently deceased friend. As more family and friends asked to join us after the memorial service, Zaytinya's staff went above and beyond to make room for our growing party. It had to be frustrating to seat so many of us on a Saturday night, but the staff was consistently pleasant. Thank you for helping old friends reconnect during a difficult time. Great food, noisy environment and less than attentive service pretty much sums this place up. I chose it because it was a mixed group of vegans and non-vegans and I'd hoped they'd be able to do a better job of accommodations the vegans. I can't knock then for not having vegan-friendly items clearly labeled as I knew that going in. My issue was more that there was no attempt to ensure that the vegan versions of dishes were delivered to the side where the vegans were sitting. Instead, the server took our and disappeared. The runners delivering the just dropped everything in the middle of the table and we were left to try to figure out what was what. This place doesn't bill itself as being vegan (or even vegetarian) friendly. I simply expected better service in this regard. \n\nAdditionally, the place it loud. It's almost as if this is by design. The noise isn't so bad that you can't hear the person next to or across from you, but in a group of 7 people, it was imposing for the people at the ends to hear one another. \n\nAll-in-all, if the food is your number priority and you like a place with a lot of energy, this is a good spot. Also, the price was quite reasonable which was another plus. For a special occasion though, I'd go somewhere with better service and less noise.

Unique and stimulating menu with a diversity of vibrant flavors. It was very hard to select which of the multiple items to order. The waiter made some good suggestions, which we followed. I could eat in this restaurant every day for two weeks and enjoy diverse dining with excellent taste and presentations without concern of repeating or tiring of anything. The various dips and sauces were outstanding, and our pita bread was replenished frequently enough for us to fully enjoy the sauces/dips. Our two lamb dishes were excellent.\n\nOut waiter was especially helpful, suggesting various dishes while avoiding the aggressive upselling that has become so common in many restaurants. Overall the service was outstanding--we were seated promptly, our waiter explained everything and offered helpful suggestions, our water glasses were filled frequently, and empty plates were promptly removed.\n\nI thought the wine was on the expensive side. I'm annoyed when a bottle is priced at exactly the cost of four individual glasses. Good variety of wines, although most of it seemed to be from Greece, Turkey, or Lebanon.

The dining for two seating options at Zaytina aren't great. We were seated at a very small two seat table with tables on either side of us less than a foot away. I don't mind being around other people but being so close that you can hear them chew is uncomfortable. The close proximity of the two couples next to us allowed us to notice that the table to our left was offered a beautiful appetizer 'on the house' and the table to our right received two glasses of champagne compliments of the restaurant. I'm not sure why this happened but we couldn't help but feel a bit miffed that we weren't given the same treatment. The food was of a high quality (especially the lamb chops) but was certainly not the best in the city. Some of the dishes were over salted (taramasalata was the worst offender) and the chocolate cake was dry and bitter. We concluded that Mike Isabella's Mediterranean restaurants served better food at the same price point. We will go there from now on.

The food could have been a lot tastier. We ordered vegetarian and it was kind of bland to be honest. You are paying a lot for what you get. I was not blown away by what the food tasted like. We like rich flavors that last. The flavors were small impact. Jaleo by Jose Andres has better tasting food.\n\nThe best part of the food was how fresh it was, in terms of ingredients. It was costly though for what you get.

We are long time fans of the owner's (chef José Andrés) other restaurants Jaleo and Oyamel and our first visit to Zaytinya did not disapoint. I might even go so far as to say it is the best I have had from him; I especially recommend the lamb tongue souvlaki, brussel sprouts and apricot greek yogurt parfait dessert. Service was also excellent; our server was both friendly and happy to talk about the menu and provide recommendations. Amosphere is contemporary with some hints of Greek islands architecture in the bleach white walls and concave ceilings; over all pleasant but a little bit bland. Value wise it's not cheap but the quality is comparable to restaurants costing much more; additionally as with other José Andrés restaurants the lunch menu offers a significant value and offers a great opportunity to experience it without breaking the bank.

We loved everything and would take family or friends for any special occasion- with each of us having a cocktail ($12 each), an order of Turkish pizza, an order of pilaf, an order of fried squid, an order of lamb, an order of chicken, fried eggplant, spanakopita and ...a cappuccino and a dessert (cake and ice cream - cake not very good - only less than great item)....with generous tip it came to $134 for two people ($105 before tip) (note - it was restaurant week but as we were celebrating Valentines we just did regular menu - we could have saved a bit going that route but did not want to be limited)

we selected the restaurant week menu for $35/per person. We did not expect large size portions so it was an overabundant amount of food--in the future the waiter should really be able to say for two people only needed two menus for four people and possibly add one extra tapa...I am not sure if the portions for Restaurant week are greater than regular ordering as it had been a while since we had been to Zaytina and never selected the Restaurant menu deal.\nWould still return but would order much less food.

I must agree with everyone else here who have raved about this place, it was amazing! We came for lunch during the extended restaurant week (unaware it had been extended) for my husbands birthday so it was quite crowded but the service was excellent. The staff was obviously busy but we never felt neglected. The food came quickly and the table was cleared just as quickly between plates. \n\nThe food!! Everything we had was good from the hummus to the lamb chops to dessert. DO have the Turkish coffee with dessert!!!! My husband even ordered a second dessert which he NEVER does. A few of us went here for dinner. Although we had a reservation we had to wait at the bar until our table was ready, about 15 minutes. We got drinks at the bar which were good but nothing special. The restaurant was packed and it has a very buzzy atmosphere. It seemed like a lot of young professionals were there after work. We got a very nice table by a window. We ordered a bunch of dishes which was what our server recommended. Some were very good, others were just meh. I have a gluten allergy and our server brought over a huge plate of sliced cucumbers for me to dip into the hummus we were served as I obviously could not eat the bread. That was very nice. We enjoyed ourselves at Zaytinya and I would recommend this restaurant for a fun night out. If you are a very serious foodie, it may not be the place for you.

First, Jeffrey (w/beard just in case there are two) was great and made the dining experience even better, especially following his recommendations. I think the two best dishes were the Fattoush (salad) and the crispy brussels afelia, yes brussels sprouts; the fattoush was lightly seasoned with a nice coating of oil, I recommend putting a dab of hommus into your salad--nice taste. I suggest skipping the keftedes kapama (meatballs) and kotopoulo youvetsi (orzo w/ chicken in tomato sauce); both dishes are served with a tomato sauce which taste more like a mass production not scratch made product.

A group of 4 of us went for DC Winter Restaurant Week 2017 and had a great time. Because Zaytinya makes small plates, the RW menu had 5 courses instead of the standard 3, and was an absolute steal at $35. With there being 4 of us and 4 choices for each course (dessert had only 2) we simply ordered one of everything and got to try 18 different dishes. Some of our favorites were: Labneh (1st course), Crispy Brussel Sprouts (2nd), Chicken and Orzo (2nd), Gigante Beans (2nd), Salmon with Lemon Sauce (3rd), Falafel and Tahini (3rd), and Garlic-Dill Shrimp (4th). Both desserts were very good as well although the apricot and yogurt option was a bit polarizing among our group. Out of all dishes the only ones we didn't care for, which is to say we wouldn't order off the regular menu if we came back were: Marinated Olives (1st), Beet Salad (1st), and Ottoman Pilaf (4th). Some people at the table did say there were a a few dishes that were too salty for them, and while I disagreed I definitely thought they were aggressively seasoned. One dish in the 4th course, sirloin steak with walnuts and pomegranate, lacked seasoning, and the steak got lost. As for the restaurant itself, the inside was beautiful and modern. The service was generally outstanding except for one dish from the 1st course not arriving until halfway into the 2nd which they did apologize for. I think without a doubt our group would come back here, especially now that we know the menu a bit better. Even when it's not restaurant week, bringing a group here so a large number of dishes can be tried would be my recommendation, you won't be disappointed.

We were very excited to try Zaytinya but were very disappointed with the food and service. To begin with, my boyfriend ordered fattoush but the runner brought out baba ghannouge. When we told him we didn't order the baba ghannouge, he took it back to the kitchen. A few minutes later another runner brought out baba ghannouge again, and we told him we ordered fattoush and this was the second time this happened. Obviously, the server got the order wrong. They ended up giving us both dishes which was thoughtful. Then, my boyfriend accidentally knocked his shish taouk off the table, making a mess on the floor. A server nearby was chatting with a woman at the bar, came over to grab the plate off the ground, and then went back to the bar to talk to the lady. He never told anyone about the mess or offer to clean it up. Luckily, the hostess was very observant and noticed and sent someone over to clean up the mess. No one ever came over to see if we wanted another dish to replace what had fallen on the ground. Lastly, the dessert took forever to serve. When the runner brought it over, we asked for our bill. Obviously, this did not get communicated to the server because we had to stop him again after we finished our dessert to ask for the check. For two very hungry people who both love this style of food, we were very disappointed and will not be back. While the decor and reputation of Jose Andres is impressive, the food and service were not.

For such a highly recommended restaurant, I was shocked by the poor service and mediocre food. Washington DC doesn't have as great a foodie scene as some other NE cities like Philly or NYC, but reviews left me hopeful. Despite a reservation, we waited over 30min to be seated at a tiny table very close up against the table next to us. Servers were few and far between and it was another long wait to get any water at the table or to order drinks to start the evening...this was a theme throughout the meal and our water glasses were often empty. Couple that with ably prepared and nicely presented Middle Eastern (principally Greek) fare together with a very pleasing ambiance, and it is not hard to see why my ratings are high. Noise level is a bit of a negative, however, so those who are noise sensitive would do well to call attention to that when making a reservation, asking for a table in a quiet corner as I did. Food was excellent. We did not receive one of the items we ordered, but we canceled it at the end of the meal after we told the waiter that we were missing an item. My biggest complaint: we were seated at a booth in front of the wall with the Turkish glass evil eyes, and the seat cushion against our backs/the wall was loose and fell on me and another guest during the entire evening. The waiter tried to fix it with blue painter's tape (I guess that's all they had?), but it did nothing. The waiter explained that the velcro that would normally hold up the seat cushion was worn down. (So it seems like the restaurant knew about this problem...) He didn't offer to re-seat us (I complained at the beginning of the meal) or comp any drinks or a dish for our extreme inconvenience. I'd expect more from a place like this.

Staff does not leave anything to be desired. I suppose I did not rate it 5 stars because my own culinary adventures and skills have greatly increased in the past five years and so some of our dishes were like I said impeccably prepared and presented but not rock your world awesome.

We have enjoyed meals at this restaurant before and wanted to celebrate our guest from L.A. with a Saturday night dinner. There were too many large party tables on this recent visit and it was exceptionally loud and our service was slow. Our party of 3 was flanked by a wedding party of about 18, two parties of 6, and a party of 8. We had been seated 10 minutes before I flagged someone down so we could order a bottle of wine. That bottle only appeared after our first round of plates arrived and I asked if we could please have our wine. The food was delicious (as always) but I believe they need to re-think the number of large party tables they accept at one time. The staff was clearly trying hard, but it wasn't working.

Overpriced, not terrifically memorable food by wonder chef Jose Andres (whose Jaleo I adore). I visit every five or so years to see if it was my imagination, but sadly it wasn't. Noisy, crowded, expensive, and -- with the exception of a couple extraordinary dishes -- unremarkable compared to any good Mediterranean restaurant. Really disappointing (unless someone else is paying). Oh, the puffy pitas are fun.

This is perhaps my 12th visit to Zaytinya, another special Jose Andres restaurant focused on Middle Eastern small plates and wines (Turkey, Lebanon, Greece for example). Like Jaleo and Oyamel, Andres' other longtime DC restaurants, the focus helps make food quality even higher. We celebrated 3 inaugurations there, and this time The Women's March on Washington. Hostesses were fine, faithful to our reservation and hospitable to the birthday of a 15 year old who joined us to march. Great food! Thoughtful service.

Zaytinya has a beautiful space and great ambiance. The lemon drop martini was unimpressive and lacked umph. The hummus and baba ganoush were tasty. The scallops were tender and had good flavor. The catfish was under seasoned but well fried. The service that day was inattentive. One of our plates came so late into the meal that we sent it back. Although it worth a visit for the ambiance, I would not go back there. Ayse Meze in Frederick, Maryland is superior in terms of both value, service and flavor. Adequate but uninspired cuisine. Nothing stood out either way, with the exception of the very smoky baba ghanoush (good) and the heavy cumin flavor of the lamb meatball dish (bad). Dated decor, though not unattractive. I imagine the bar is quite nice in the evening. Untidy and unpleasantly dark restroom stalls. The service was a stronger point and salvaged what was otherwise a bit of a disappointment, though not a bad value for the mezze lunch. I also compliment the wine selection. \n\nOne major complaint: If you sit anywhere near the front in the winter, be prepared for very cold drafts every time someone exits or enters, which is often. \n\nOverall, I would not recommend this restaurant given the number of excellent restaurants in D.C., many well within walking distance of Zaytinya.

The food here is predictably excellent. The small dishes encourage sharing and experimentation for things one hasn't tried before--with 9 dishes on the table, if one of them doesn't turn out to be a favorite, you won't go hungry! The ginger beer (non-alcoholic) is wonderfully light with a bit of a ginger bite. I can't get past ordering it to try the others because it's so good! The calamari is tender and crisp with a great marinara dipping sauce. And I absolutely LOVE the rose ice cream, sweet but not cloying--it tastes just like a rose smells! How do they do that? The quality of the food here is REALLY underwhelming for what you pay. The cocktails were good and I would have had more of them if my server had checked on us more than once every 45 minutes. They seem kind of understaffed for their size and popularity and probably just couldn't keep up with it. Also, the fried squid was probably the most disappointing calamari dish I've ever had and really bland, although I will say it was a good texture. Overall, I wouldn't go again and I cancelled my reservation for a different Jose Andres restaurant the next day after my disappointment.\n\nCan we also address how cheesy it is to have your own quotes all over everything? That's even worse than having chef photos everywhere.\n\nThe menus are also really clunky and overwhelming.

We opted for the chef's experience and took the recommendation of the waiter for the wine. It was lovely to let someone else make the decisions and still end up with delicious food and wine. Noteable food choices were the original hummus, fried brussel sprouts, and the grilled octopus. All arrived hot, fresh and were outstanding, as was the homemade pita bread. My husband and I came here because we heard great things from friends and liked the brunch menu. Beware, the menu on open table is not accurate. They didn't have any of the items that we hoped to order. \n\nThe service was spotty. We were asking for recommendations and they seemed confused by it. We ordered the haloumi to start, then I ordered a vegetarian egg dish and my husband, the French toast. He asked if that would be enough of an entree since he was very hungry. Our waiter suggested he get the falafel sandwich instead, so he did. \n\nLater, another server cake by with our food - all at once. The starter and the entrees. They brought my husband the French toast, not the falafel sandwich. We were in a rush, so we didn't make a thing of it. \n\nAsking for more coffee was always met with a look of confusion. Our server came back after we asked for coffee and asked if we had asked for a falafel sandwich. \n\nThe food was very good, but honestly, after our experience, I wouldn't go back. Not our best experience here, but the trend with most of Jose Andreas' restaurants seems to be a decrease in value and experience overall. Food ranged from average to above average for the price point, but the atmosphere and service was simply bad for the cost - cocktails were also simply bad. We were placed at a table adjacent to the stairwell which left little room for ambiance. Food took forever to get, even the bread and drinks did not arrive until over 15 minutes into our meal. Some plates we had to re-order due to never arriving and some were cold upon finally receiving them. That being said there are still some joys to be found in the playful flavor profiles and diverse menu. I don't know that we will be heading back any time soon with the plethora of better options in D.C. currently.

I went with a group on a trip to DC and had very high expectations, which the restaurant didn't meet. None of the plates seemed to stand out and I wouldn't go back. Zaytina lives up to the Jose Andres reputation. I am a regular at Oyamel and China Chilcano and this was my first time there. We took the Chef's choice for $55 and it was absolutely wonderful. Zaytinya has been one of our family's favorite restaurants since it opened but with our kids scattered we haven't been in over a year. We were very disappointed to find the menu changes included eliminating every one of our favorite dishes - garlic shrimp, spinach with apple, little sausages on mashed potatoes., etc.. I understand the need to update menus but to get rid of signature dishes seems like a mistake.

Zytinya is a great place for vegetarians and groups with diverse eating needs. All entrees are small plates with enough for 3 to have a taste. We dine there frequently and have never had a dish we didn't enjoy. Salads and lamb dishes are superb. Apricots and greek yogurt for dessert. The 2 of us order 6 or 7 dishes to share. Their tea service is well done.

It was right after New Years, the restaurant was empty when we came in around 11:15, but the service was slow. Took about 10 minutes before waiter came to greet and bring water after we have seated. Bread took about 20 minutes (I think we were too early and things weren't ready). Otherwise the food was great, we chose the Mezze lunch experience (4-course for $25). \n\nOverall I give this a 4 star experience. Will definitely come again.

We were there for NYE. The reservation was for 8:45PM. We were seating on time and upstairs ( upstairs lacks ambiance). We order of the prefixed menu and while i understand it was a busy night and some items night have been pre-cooked to accommodate the special evening, the food wasn't very good. My boyfriend who had been there before have raved all about Zaytina and after leaving in DC for 7 years decided to try it out. The overall experience was just ok...\n\nThe number one thing i hate the most is feeling rushed to complete my meal. The pre-fixed menu contain 6 small plates and in my opinion needed to be spaced out a bit more. At one point there were three small plates on the table which had gotten cold because we had finished our pervious dishes. The wait staff was overly efficient in either removing and bring out food. I think sometimes waiters need to learn when to not service the table. We were there for second seating so i didn't understand why they were rushed.

Early New Year's Eve dinner after a 4:15 movie, and we were glad to get reservations at Zaytinya. We made our plans late, and reservations weren't plentiful downtown. The meal was delicious, hard to narrow the wide choices down to four shared dishes. We started with great cocktails, then ordered separate soup and salad starters (my salad with citrus and arugula was excellent) then split vegetables and entrée salads and had separate desserts. The dessert option of two dessert shots or one full size was great -- had the opportunity to each try two smaller servings of dessert. The chocolate rose dessert was my favorite. Next visit I'll be sure to try the eggplant selections that I had to pass up. Dinner at Zaytinya's was a great way to kick off a new year.

As usual, the food at Zaytinya was marvelous. We had a vegan in our party and she was thrilled with the number of options and the quality of the food. The service, however, was less than great. We arrived at 9:30. The restaurant was busy but not crazy. There were plenty of waiters but it took at least 15 mins. for someone to take our drink order and another long period of time to show up and take the food order. The end of the meal was the same -- a long, unexplained wait for the check. When they were around, the waitstaff was professional and helpful in making dining decisions. But, frankly, they seemed to be MIA for most of the meal. Love the food and hope this is an anomaly.

The little amounts of sauce were not enough to carry them. Dolmades were flavorful, falafels were good too, not stodgy. Had a terrible table that looked like it was an afterthought to squeeze in 2 more people - right beside the door separated by a screen from the incoming customers. The screen didn't stop an icy blast every time the door opened. Could definitely do better. Busy restaurant, great ambience, good options for vegetarians and vegans but ask for salt and pepper.

Zaytinya is a happy, boisterous restaurant. Not the place for quiet contemplation. I suspect we could hear less than 50% of what our waiter told us during the course of the evening. My wife and I took the Zaytinya Experience tasting menu and the Zaytinya beverage experience. The latter is easier to explain: a cocktail (I believe it was 'Turkish Storm', although it was the same as a Dark and Stormy), followed by a sparkling, white, red, and dessert wines. We had about 11 small plates during our tasting experience. All were delicious. A mix of seafood, vegetarian dishes, and lamb dishes - all Mediterranean. The wait staff was challenged to get the wine coordinated with the dishes, but was otherwise attentive and friendly. And it's not easy keeping up given the energetic nature of the restaurant. Highly recommended if you aren't looking for a quietly romantic evening. There's a reason it's such a popular place!

Noise level is high and the room acoustics are terrible. We had the chef's lasting menu with wine pairing. I go to Zaytinya every time I am in DC (2-3x a year) since Mike Isabella opened it many years ago. The food is very, very good. I was disappointed this time, though, due to the service. The waitress, who we liked very much, recommended 6-7 dips, which we ordered. As you know, you can't eat dips without bread, and the bread would only come 4 pieces at a time (table of 5) with long gaps between, so we really couldn't eat most of the items. Regardless, everything else came out very quickly, so we found ourselves with about 20 small plates stacked/overlapping/hanging off our table, and a very rushed feeling. We were told that bread was in high demand, so baskets would come 4 pieces at a time. Despite telling the servers early on that it seemed the food was coming out too fast and we couldn't eat the first things without bread, this continued, and they didn't seem too concerned. Might take a break from Zaytinya on my next trip. In fairness, this has not been my experience in the past, and I maintain that the food is very good. But I can't say I enjoyed my meal due to the manner in which it was served.

It's good but ain't that great for Andre Jose restaurant. The food is okay, I have tasted better greek food. The Saffron rice is amazing. The platter is small, which is kinda okay, but expensive for that taste and quantity. One thing I did not like about the restaurant is that they charged us for cake cutting ceremony, $2.50 per person, which I think is cheap, as they do not have a cake or dessert available in the restaurant to order and cut, and with the charges they are asking you not to bring in a cake as well. This is absurd, given the restaurant is quite lavish in food and ambiance, yet they go for a cheap shot like this. Please remove the policy of cake cutting charges. It's absurd and it feels like you cake celebration and cutting for a birthday is not invited at your restaurant. Despite paying, the server did not do a vert good job at decorating the plate, they could have created a beautiful plate with my friend's name on it with the cake I had brought in. All they did was put the candle(which I brought) on the cake and brought on the plate. It did not look nice at all.

The scallops and Brussels sprouts were outstanding in flavor and presentation. We enjoyed tasting new wines and desserts. And, the staff was obviously well trained and efficient. Zaytinya is a great place for small plates of all foods Mediterranean. My guest and I made a selection of nine small plates and the chef added an order of pumpkin hummus. The beet salad was excellent, fresh, light and delicious. The falafel were small but were packed full with flavor. The dill Gerides were perfectly cooked and the combo of lemon and dill brought out the flavor of the shrimp. The calamari was cooked to perfection. Loved all of the dishes we ordered. I'm not a fan of pumpkin so the pumpkin hummus was not pleasing to my palate but I'm sure would make a pumpkin lover happy. I will definitely return to Zatinya and recommend it to my friends.

We ate at Zaytinya early on a Monday evening (5:30pm) because we had tickets for a 7:30 show at the Fords Theatre down the block. This place is AWESOME. We love tapas/mezze style dining and this was superb. The presentation was beautiful and the food quality was a 10. Our server was attentive and always smiling. ..and someone always showed up with more pita bread (not the little flat triangles, but, large puffy HOT fresh out of the oven rolls. The cocktail waitress at the bar was also very nice and made some great suggestions.\nThe food was outstanding and the service was also very good. My only complaint is that you can't hear a damn thing. So don't go for a romantic or special occassion, for that matter go only if you want terrific food but would rather not listen or talk to the people you are with.

Zaytinya had been on our 'list' for awhile. When we had the chance to take a strict vegetarian friend to lunch with other (meatatarian) family members, we opted to give it a try. Good choice! A happening place at lunchtime on a weekday, the spacious high-ceilinged dining room with its view of the bustling street corner is very special. (Noisy, though.) We ordered vegetarian dips to share, which came with puffy pita-like bread that was replenished promptly without asking. The baba ganoush was especially tasty, a nice smoky flavor. Hummus and tzatsiki also very good. Those of us who ordered the lunch sandwiches (including a shredded chicken, a lamb gyro and a lamb-beef burger), agreed they were all okay-to-good, but next time we would stick with sharing mezzes instead.

I took my clients to Zaytinya for lunch and had to spend most of our time there apologizing to them for the awful experience we had. All of us ordered from the 4 course lunch menu and I expected the items to be served in accordance with the courses. Instead, items appeared haphazardly; servers had no clue which items were to be served to which diner; one of us was only served his meal when the others had finished. When I brought this up to our waitress, her response was that the items came from different stations. Does the restaurant think patrons care? As such, my colleague and I have determined NEVER to entertain our clients at Zaytinya ever

Can get LOUD on Saturday nights. And hectic. It felt like there was constant movement, both frenzied and controlled, occurring all around us until well after the main entrees. We were seated near a very large party, but our server was not theirs, though it definitely impacted the speed of service towards the beginning of the evening. We had to beg for some pita and olive oil. \n\nThe food is though, wonderful. Don't do what we did and go overboard on the delicious spreads (4 for 4 people), or you will find yourself battling through the main course. For dessert, skip out on the more decadent options, and opt for a single scoop of one of their ice cream flavors, which the night we were there included: olive oil, pistachio, rose (which was the best), and vanilla baklava (with small pieces in it).

I've been to Zaytinya a few times, and this was the absolute worst service experience I've ever had there. After waiting over 45 minutes after our 8 PM reservation, we were finally seated. The service was slow to bring everything -- water, wine, bread -- but the absolute worst was when the bus boys behind us spilled FREEZING cold water all over me, three of my tables guests, and our table, drenching our outfits and our food. We were offered nothing more than a napkin to dry off and fresh table settings -- not even a round of drinks or an apology from the waiter. I will not return to Zaytinya any time soon. There are far too many good restaurants in this city to waste time and money on a place with such awful service.

This is one of our 'special occasion' spots. In terms of food and service, Zaytinya never disappoints. But we were there on a recent Saturday night, and it was a mixed experience. We had a 7pm reservation but were seated at 7:40. And they put us next to a table of 20+ people. Very difficult for a couple to have a nice evening when seated next to a loud group of two dozen people who are on their third round of cocktails. In addition, we were seated in the middle of the restaurant, with wait staff (who were working very hard) zipping by us every few seconds, often kicking our chairs or brushing against us. It was like eating at Grand Central Station. I hope we get luckier on our table assignment next time, as we always have a great meal. The waitress did her best to make our experience a good one.

This is best restaurant in Washington that I have visited in recent years. The food is innovative, novelle Greek fare from the freshest ingredients put together in unusual, and unusually appealing ways. The many vegetarian appetizers are particularly noteworthy, including grilled brussels sprouts with spiced cream sauce, swiss chard, and many others. It is also surprisingly affordable, much higher value than other restaurants near the top of the DC scence. The only problem is getting a reservation on weekend nights, but keep trying or walk-on or sit at the bar - it is well worth it.

Got the chef's tasting menu for two. Food was unbelievably unremarkable and terribly underseasoned. Outside of a tiny lamb dish and 5 overly buttered shrimp, the rest of the meal was a collection of dips and bread to stuff you early. I usually love meditteranean dips and pita, but these were practically bought at a grocery store. Final bill about $150 without tip. We then both spent the next 24 hours vomiting and with blood tinged diarrhea. I am a physician, and I guaruntee it was food poisoning from that meal. Next day, my credit card was used fraudulently all over the DC area. I was visiting from out of town and only used that card at Zatinya. I have to believe something shady took place there as well. All I can say is that Jose Andres is disgustingly overrated. Choose Kapnos down the road instead.

We have been big fans for several years and make coming here a priority whenever in DC. This time was a sad let down. Cold dishes arrived immediately but the salt level in several of them (and we like salt) were off the charts and inedible unless mixed with other dishes. 15 minutes after the cold dishes the first of the hot dishes arrived. Finally we had to wait 20 minutes for the last dish - lamb chops. Although very well marinated and charred - they were cold in the middle and the fat wasn't adequately rendered despite the chops being medium well. Surely at a place like this they don't pre-char and reheat?? If the owner had seen and tasted execution like this I hope he would have been embarrassed.

The wine list is overpriced for the quality of the wines, but the cocktails were imaginative and very good. Service at table was good, particularly considering how crowded it was, but the reception was unorganized and the people there were more interested in their own conversation than in helping patrons. It was an ordeal getting our coats when leaving and the person who finally got my sister's coat forgot her scarf, then said 'you should chill out' when he got it to her, even though we had not raised a fuss. Yay! \n\nWe loved the seasonal spring pea tzaziki from the specials menu, as well as the regular menu items, especially the lamb kleftiko (order this!), dolmades (and this!), brussel sprouts (and this too), and spanikopita (why not order this as well?).

We always have a good time here. Nice menu selection of shareable items. It was very busy on a Saturday night. Once we got past a hostess stand attitude issue the service was great. People without reservations were being told there was a four hour wait.\n\nSave room for desserts all were good and very different from what you usually get.

Only complaint is the time my party was seated. I had a reservation for 7:00 p.m. and my party and I were not seated until 7:15 pm. That would not have been a problem if other parties had not been seated before mine. That was highly irritating to me. But for the excellent service my party and I received from our waitress, I would have considered not patronizing this establishment again.

The food was delicious. So why not a higher rating? Booked the table on the occasion of son's high school graduation. But it took nearly 10 min after arrival to get out table - 3 tables for 2 hastily joined together. There was little elbow room with so many plates on the table. Two members of our party ordered the Chef 's Experience and until asked to slow down, servers were bringing out too many items too quickly. I wish the table was bigger and there was no acknowledgement of the special occasion. Very distracted staff.

Just too loud. AND portions are too small for reasonable value. I eat out all the time; it has just gotten too skimpy. Hummus at $8/9 dollars is a scant 3-4 tblespoons. Just too skimpy; value not consistent with pricing.

The food was excellent and our server was great, but we came on time for a 7:15 reservation on a Monday night, and were kept waiting for 1/2 hour with barely an apology. In a smaller or newer (i.e. Less experienced) restaurant, it might be understandable, but they should be able to anticipate better for an early reservation.

This restaurant is fantastic - the food is always good, the service is amazing, and if you get the right table the environment is great. My only negative comment is the noise level is outside the realm of reasonable. PLEASE put something in to absorb the noise and this will then be a perfect restaurant.

We have in the past enjoyed the restaurant. This last visit was a disappointment.\nFood did seem as fresh, the classic rice dish was dry and flavorless. The chicken was old and dry. With the exception of the fried eggplant, all the other warm dishes tasted re-heated and dry.\nEven dessert was lackluster.\nSo sad!

I was worried that one of my favorite DC restaurants might be showing some age. I haven't been here in 3 years. But the 5 of us at dinner ordered 15 different dishes and shared them all and loved all of them. Okay, I'm not a big fan of grape leaves under any circumstances....but my friends insisted I was wrong. My favorites were the wonderful ouzo laced oysters, and......a Zaytinya favorite that is not on the menu.....but which they had anyway. I think they are called 'Pelmenyi' but not sure. They are tiny little meat stuffed dumplings wrapped in a very delicate and sheer little pasta bag. covered in a white yogurt-y sauce. Sounds odd....but absolutely delicious. Zaytinya is a great way to be a bit adventurous and try foods you might not ordinarily eat, since everything is a 'mezze-sized' plate.

We had reservations for dinner. The first half of the party arrived first and notified the receptionist, who said they could not seat the party until everybody had arrived. This is never illogical if you have reservations. When the rest of the party arrived 5 minutes later, they told us that they were running behind and could not seat us for another 15 minutes. We went to the bar to wait. The server there was fantastic, fast, and very accommodating. When we were seated, our server for dinner was the opposite. He mentioned he would bring out some pita bread, which was done 15 minutes later. He took our drink and food order at that time as well, which we thought was excessively long wait just to order drinks at minimum. However, once he took our order, the remainder of service was fine.

The food was great as usual but service was not as good. The hostess said there were no outdoor tables available so I told her several were empty as we arrived. Only then did she leave her desk and check. Then we had to constantly wave the waiter down for drink refills. Usually service is the best I've seen and yet this time we were left to ask for help. Maybe it was just a bad day.

Food quality and preparation were exceptional. Wait staff service excellent. Hostess service was not very welcoming and appeared quite disorganised. It appeared(my assumption) our table was used to accommodate a larger party and left the hostess with a challenge as to where to seat us. We did have an Open Table reservation and declined an outdoor table at the time of our reservation, however after waiting an additional 15 minutes without any recognition from the hostess, we were escorted to an outdoor table without comment; a very unprofessional front of house. Fortunately, the food and waiter more than made up for the uncomfortable introduction.

As always, Zaytinya did not disappoint, and it was nice to be there on a night when the restaurant was a little less full than usual, and thus less noisy. Our server was very helpful and attentive, even though he was new. While some of the dishes (the brussel sprouts and soft shell crab) were as good as always, the lamb kabob was tough and not very flavorful and the fattoush more boring than it needs to be. Ordering right is always part of the secret at Zaytinya and similar places, but even the old standards should be top notch.

The service and cuisine were excellent! Our waiter understood our preferences and made recommendations to please. The folks who replenish the bread and bring the plates were efficient. My work colleague asked what kind of bread it was as they delivered it to our table and the lady responded 'I don't know' which was a little surprising but we got a chuckle out of it. \n\nWe ordered 7 tapas which was about right for two people. The meatballs, brussel sprouts, shrimp and squash hummus were very tasty.\n\nOur reservations were at 5pm on a Thursday and it was very calm and quiet initially. As the evening progressed it became noticeably louder and there was a band playing somewhere. After the full house developed it can be a bit of a process to get to the restroom and back depending on where you are seated. We were in the front window area which required navigating past several bottlenecks of chairs/people in the bar or behind the hostess station. There is only room for one person to pass at a time and very busy waiters walking very fast, so you get the picture.\n \nDesserts were phenomenal, my favorite was the Turkish delight and loved the Turkish coffee!

I like Zaytinya very much, but I don't think I'll go again during restaurant week - it was like a factory. The hummous and Brussels sprouts were excellent - but the salmon was extremely unappetizing. It was undercooked but edible - but unfortunately the sauce they used did not go with the salmon at all and in fact I disliked it very much so did not eat all of my salmon. The dessert was very nice - but the salmon was extremely disappointing and the sauce was horrible. To top it off my dining companion had an extremely upset stomach immediately after dining there - which is never good.
