This is not a hotel. It is beds, with no breakfast, right in the very centre of the beautiful Cathedral City of Ely, in Cambridgeshire. My niece's wedding was in St Mary's Church, and the Ely Guest House is on St Mary's Street, and also a stone's throw from The Lamb Hotel, where the reception took place. I had breakfast at this hotel!! I could not have chosen a handier place, given that I travelled by train, and therefore was on foot. Also, quite unplanned by me, my single room was changed for a double - plenty of room for my long legs!! This Is not a complaint. a small building in the centre fo an ancient Cathedral City, is itself going to be ancient. The Ely Guest House seemed to be of half-timber construction, with little narrow stairs. I am now older, and found this not very easy....
There is no breakfast but readily available on high street.
It was a lovely room in a wonderful building. Very clean and full of character. No toilet paper, major problem. I had to go to the Lamb to use their toilet on Sunday morning.
The beds were comfortable, the shower efficient and it was in a very good location (200 metres fron cathedral) No breakfast (although on b&b guides), no shower gel, minimal tea and coffee facilities
It is very convenient, being 2 minutes walk away from the cathedral and the shops There were no bathroom facilities in the room, not even a washbasin.
It advertised itself as B&B, but does not provide breakfast!
Room had lots of character... lovely beams English lacking from staff
Tea/coffee making facilities provided. The place was clean. Staff were friendly. No breakfast included. Room was cold. Check in was at the restaurant underneath the guest house. Sunday morning no staff were available to ask for information.
Roomy, central, Saw no staff in the hotel! Person at restaurant showed us in, but we were unsure that this was a member of staff. Front door regularly left open, and felt vulnerable as hall was unattended and gave access to rooms so anyone from the street could enter unhindered.
central location. comfortable bed and warm room. could only access one channel on the tv. ensuite bathroom very cramped.quite expensive in comparison to other hotels stayed in.
This is a terrible place. The service was disgraceful. The man in charge was rude, arrogant and only interested in taking money. After our terrible experience here I would recommend this place to be shut down. I would tell anyone and everyone to steer well clear. It is very over priced and the staff are useless - we couldn't even get directions to the hotel from the so called reception.
Very nice room, but bath very small. Good location for discovering Ely. Breakfast service was slow (one poor school age girl on her own). Dinner was poor, web site advertises a lively new chef, his food was neither.
Had to rearrange accomodation when Ely had no water supply. Thankfully was able to get a room at the Nyton. Room was cold. Sink was in the bedroom. Room was above bar, so quite noisy.
Location. Faded elegance, which some would find charming.
Accessibility A bit of Fawlty Towers about the hotel
Excellent Dinner & Breakfast Room clean and tidy but a little dated
Staff were friendly and accommodating. We had dinner at the hotel which was good as was the selection for breakfast. For visiting Ely the location is excellent very easy walking distance. The hotel is certainly not AA**** as stated. The general appearance is looking tired and dated the pictures on the web site do not reflect the current state of the hotel. We booked a double bedded room and ended up with a twin but the staff could not really explain why especially as they had only a few guests staying. This hotel could be really good it's location and the quality of the food offered is good, however, the service especially from the owner/manager was a little 'Faulty Towers' on occasion. I would reccommend it to friends but with the proviso that you 'take it as you find it' - interesting!.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the food was excellent
Location and service The room was very hot. We shut down the radiator but failed to note that an electric heater was on at full blast. When sleep became impossible during the night, we realised what was happening, and turned off the heater. It then took 40 minuteas for the room to cool.
The room was very well equiped for a budget price. The bathroom was very good and fresh.Heating was easily controlled. Coming down to breakfast on the sunday morning was certainly an experience I would not wish to have again. The space where we were told to sit was filthy from the night before no cleaning had taken place. The breakfast was reasonable but mostly cold. Not really a good experience.
Very central and good selection of food available in the evening. Also the ability to park behind good. Beds were very comfortable Very steep stairs up to bedrooms - very worried walking down them.
The room was a good size and very clean, the breakfast was good and the staff were friendly. The double room had 2 single beds pushed together with a sheet over the top so you fell down the gap. It should have been a double bed in a double room! Also there was a DJ going on until 1:30am so we were told it could get very noisy, if I was tryign to get an ealy nigth or had children it would have been too loud. We were out during this time so avoided it.
Room was clean and tidy and acceptable for a stop over. The level of service was very poor in the bar during the evening, I ordered a meal from the bar at 8:45, and was told it was ok as the chef finished at 10:00pm, only to be informed when I queried where my meal was that they had misplaced the order, and it was now to late at 09:40pm, to prepare the food in time for the chef to finish. Not impressed. I also confirmed my breakfast reservation for 7:45,to be informed when I arrived at 7:45, they they were expecting me at 07:00, and had come in especially to get me breakfast. I explained to the lady concerend and she apologised for questioning me as to why I was later than she expected, and said it happend frequently.
Friendly staff. Friendly atmosphere. Comfy bed. Lovely big tea/coffee cups Need some drawers in the room. Corridors and stairs a little dated and uneven. Our room was quiet, but further down the corridor may have been noisy when the disco was downstairs.
the receptiong was the bar itself. staff exceptionally friendly and accommodating. the water heater was out, and they offered to find us another place to stay or we could stay at 1/5th the price of our original cost..we stayed!!! and the room was nicer than most of the rooms we had been staying in during the trip...we were very happy!!! read the reviews before chose to book re: noise and mess, but place was renovated..it was very quiet, came w/ ear plugs for those nights when they did have 'entertainment' in bar setting (weekends mostly)...our stay was juuuuust perfect. parking easy. meals were such that you had to go to the bar to order; no one came to you; and unless you knew this, you'd wait an awful long time wondering where the help was...but the food was great!!!
Excellent value for money. Service and food qiuality vety good.
The Service & The Friendley Staff No
The room was nice and the staff were friendly The pub has a DJ on Friday and saturday nights so it's very noisy.
comfortable bed very polite staff Bathroom door did not close which proved difficult when sharing with family member. Room overlooking main street very noisy with traffic, radiators not working only 1 small portable one in bedroom none in bathroom. late disco also very noisy
A nice old hotel with a fine staircase, helpful staff and an excellent breakfast. Ideal for visiting the Cathedral. parking easy. Ready for redecoration.
Check-in and check-out were efficient. The room itself was clean. The spare blanket was in a protective plastic cover which was not aired, meaning the blanket had a stale smell. I know the hotel can't help it, but the cathedral near the hotel chimed every 15 minutes throughout the night. I suppose the hotel could have informed people of this in advance.
Clean tidy, staff very polite Needed wifi and spent 4 hrs without any success or help from staff. Very noisy due to traffic
Central location. A little noisy if your room was facing the street. Staff were very nice and helpful. A greater number of staff would have been an advantage.
Central location, free parking Lack of interest in my requirements (I asked for interlinked rooms, or at least next to each other, as we have kids of different ages - not only were we separated, but initially even on different floors...even though there were plenty of room available), high street noise and no air conditioning
Good staff, good location - 'old school' hotel A bit scruffy...
Room was cold with the heating set to max. No heating in bathroom and v.cold. No hot water! Cold shower on was not good; you could stay a travellodge and get hot water! My breakfast order ended up on another table and had to re-ask for it twice.
Central location, Noisy road outside bedroom during working hours
Easy to get to on foot from the station and within walking distance of shops, restaurants and tourist attractions Staff were slghtly dismissive and I felt that aking me if I would like a cooked breakfast was an afterthought.
A spotlessly clean room with very good facilities which ensured a most comfortable night's sleep.
The excellent service. No
Very friendly helpful landlady, lovely setting Can hear people in adjoining room very easy (thin walls)
Decent quailty food at breakfast. Lovely gardens with birds. Overly strict hours of arrival, breakfast and departure. A little more chintzy than expected. Tired decor. Breakfast ambience not relaxed. Cramped shower/toilet facilities.
Room was good and clean, breakfast was very good and the owners very friendly. Bathroom was very small and shower lacked power.
Everything - very friendly welcome, spotlessly clean and comfortable, lovely breakfast.
The owners were extreamly courtious, polite and friendly with a vast knowledge of the surrounding areas. It was an ideal base for a wonderful weekend.
What did i like best? The friendly disposition of the hosts above anything else, a lovely couple who really made you feel welcome. The room may have been quaint with a decorative taste perhaps not for everyones pallet but having stayed in a few hotels on my tavels Baileys definitely had personal touches which elevate it above the others. The room was a little cold and the t.v could have been a little bigger.
It was very welcoming and cosy. Quite a superb stay
The homely atmosphere and friendliness. Also the feeling that nothing was to much trouble.
Warmest welcome and loveliest room; breakfast at their beautiful dining room was memorable too. I really hope to stay there again. I liked everything there, but if you are a busy traveller, it would be more convenient if you go there by your own car.
