Nothing My Stay at the 40 Berkeley Hostel was horrible. The stay here ruined my vacation. The facilities are filthy (bedroom and showers). They have old towels, bedsheets, beds, and out of service showers. We cringed every time we had to return for sleep/shower. While my group was out, one of the ceiling fan blades broke off. We alerted the staff upon noticing what happen. We were accused of breaking it and were promptly charged an additional $150. The staff was unfriendly and the Manager was unprofessional/unhelpful. Please spend the extra $10-$20 for a far superior experience in Boston.
Staff did try to help, but not able to resolve after the fact. Location is great, however the facility is not as presented online. Advertised as a refurbished YMCA serving as a hostel with a wonderful location and modern amenities. The pictures are bright, sunny and clean. Reality was a dive populated by bewildered expats and some of the seedier elements of society. The expats and I apparently had different expectations. The floor we were located on had a distinctive yuckiness about it, complete with stained carpets, chipped paint, a gross dormitory style bathroom with torn shower curtains and the a sink was not affixed to the wall. The room had a semi-malfunctioning ceiling lamp and a very dim bulb. Street noise - and smells were prominently accessible through the windows. A drunk wandered down the hall around 1 am demanding that, "b%/#h give him his money," because he "had seen the mother %=#er leave." Not sure what that was about, but the suggestion that I should have let the desk know was laughable. Really not thrilled about the idea of wandering out into the hall with a drunk. The worst part was the spiders. I survived 4 days in Maine with minimal bug bites only to get 8 spider bites in the hostel! We chose the place as it was easy access to the airport for a 6 am flight. It was, but next time I will just get up earlier. Never again.
It is cheap, well heated, not far away from downtown Two showers per floor is not enough
the breakfast is very English very big fat, the sockets in the room are all two holes...I could not charge my laptop. the room is also noisy near street, and the heating did work, and the blanket was just better than nothing and I felt very cold in the room.
Close to everything, staff was always friendly, great for the money, hearty free breakfast. n/a
Well de breakfast was pretty good and the bathroom, although it was shared, was clean. Also you have a / eleven near and many restaurants close. Nice if you are a Backpacker If you travel by car, the haven´t parking, so nearest was 24$ a day. The room seems old.
The price and location Only 1 elevator and it violently shook as it operated. Room was hot as hell and it was cool outside.
Reasonable price, great food, breakfast included, Close to downtown
Good location. It's walkable to the city center. The bathrooms were dirty and the rooms outdated with no AC.
Pleasant environment, friendly, helpful staff, comfortable bed, easily adjustable room temperature, clean, wholese atmosphere. I recommend this place highly, and plan to stay there anytime I go to Boston. Nothing unpleasant. I've stayed in hostels all over the world and I'd rate this one right at the top.
It served our purpose. We wanted a place to sleep and we got it. Bathroom is shared, stalls and showers. They have a sweet deal on parking with one of the garages near by. Nothing really complain about.
It's a great place to go without spending too much money and get a little bit of travelers delight without getting on an air plane.
There was no a/c and no fans. It was hot hot hot in our room on this summer day. The kitchen was almost a joke. We could not find a single spoon or fork! They do not recycle - shame on them!
I was un aware that there was no private room and this place is a youth hostel. I canceled on the spot and then was stuck with a $400 hotel room because Boston is over priced for no logical reason.
Location, modernness, cleanliness, convenience all excellent. Code for doors simplifies the process. Kitchen well stocked and generally available. Bathrooms were large, clean, efficient. Enough so that access was not a problem. We'd use STRBoston again. We visited in November. Our room temperature was around 62-63 degrees -- controlled by locked thermostat in hall. Window would not lock, but fixed the next morning. Hair driers did not work -- took two days to fix -- used others on floor above.
It was clean, had the basic necessities, easy to access, good kitchen and laundry facilities, safe, convenient location close to buses and downtown, affordable price. It was across the street from a bar and at night the bar patrons were quite noisy until 2:00 am, making it difficult for me to sleep well. Also, there is no parking close by, so people with vehicles need to know that they will have to park far away and walk for about 20 min. to reach a parking garage from the hotel. There is no dining area, so patrons need to eat in their rooms.
