Friendly and welcoming. Well-prepared food, reasonably priced. Excellent bar service. Willing to oblige with all reasonable requests.
Close to the Thames Path General run down appearance
Good value for money. Friendly staff. Very good cooked breakfast. Bar menu also looked good but as I had other arrangements for dinner, I did not eat in the bar, and cannot therefore comment on the standard of the food. Hotel needs some investment. The shower is very basic. Town centre location is convenient, but early morning traffic noise was an unwelcome wake up call.
None First room we had we had no hot running water, radiators didnt work and it was freezing cold, there was no shower and room was tired looking with poor decor and dirty net curtains, we where then moved to a second room which also had no shower, noisy plumbing, but with the temp outside being minus 5degs at least we were warm.
The breakfast was good and served quickly. The bed was comfy. The rooms were very cold when we arrived and lack of notices to fire exits. Smelt like a greasy spoon cafe. Needs the decor of the rooms updating
The food was good. The wine was reasonable priced. Would recommend this trip back in time.
good location poor decor needs refurbishment
Staff we pleasant and responsive; bed was comfortable The bathroom just was not clean, the shower leaked leaving us with puddles on the floor, there was just one minute cake of soap to share between the washbasin and the shower. The \tV had no remote control and there was no hairdryer, both of which should be standard for 3*
Location/breakfast No curtains - only vertical blinds on one window - none on other window. Generally a bit grubby. Towels clean, but small.Duvet only just fitted on double bed.
I enjoyed a good lunch The shower was poor, little pressure unless the water temerature was too hot for comfort. And to finish serving breakfast at 9am on Sunday is ridiculous. We missed breakfast!
The warmeth and friendliness to the bar area. The landlord Gilbert was more than helpful the shower in the room did not control the water temperature correctly
Friendliness of staff, good food, cottagey feel to the room, very clean.Quiet surroundings. Rather untidy area between accommodation and main Inn gave a bad first impression. A dog being allowed on the bar counter, no objection to it otherwise.
Good food good accommadation friendly service very relaxed atmosphere Shower water pressure weak
A warm welcome awaited us. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room was very clean and extremely comfortable with an en suite shower room and plenty of space. Our stay was excellent value for money and provided a super overnight stay for a family wedding just 10 minutes or so up the road.
Convenient location for our purpose The initial welcome was a bit offhand and the introduction to our room and the facilities was a bit cursory. The bathroom had a fusty smell. However, the room was warm and clean and the staff we met the next morning were a disntinct improvement!
The staff were very friendly, the food was excellent and it is in a tiny quiet village. Our bathroom was very small
Very quiet. Few other guests. Stand-in manager was great. Sad loss when he moves on. The flush in the en-suite lavatory was pitiful, the room was in need of redecoration and the bed was past its best.
Location, Location, Location! Staff were excellent, approachable & informative. Took care of all our needs. The owner took time to seek out our opinion. Bathroom, whilst a little on the small side, was quite adequate with the shower the highlight - very comfortable. Bed very comfortable and duvet was great to snuggle under. Peaceful, quiet and lovely location at a very affordable price. Compared to other similar accommodation, the Star Inn is close to the very top, would recommend it for anyone wishing to stay in a rural and beautiful location. Lack of storage space for two people, e.g. a chest of drawers or similar would have eased this, hanging space adequate. Not an undue issue though, wish the towel heater was switched on from the start, though once it was realized we were from a much warmer climate the offer was made immediately and apologies given.
Lunch and breakfast well cooked and enjoyable, though the service was extremely slow. Notable lack of staff the probable answer to this. Helpful answers to our enquiries re routes back to civilisation. Water in bathroom not very hot and beds rather hard. We have had better accommodation in a variety of hotels over the years and feel that the Star Inn is run down and in need of more staff and greater professional management.
The hotel had changed hands only three days before we arrived - and the new owners were clearly trying to get things (which had clearly slipped down) back under control swiftly. The place was a bit disappointing but, that said, they were very responsive to our requests, acknowledging our suggestions as to how they might improve to ensure that this remains a four star destination of choice. It would be nice to have cotton sheets. The plumbing needs sorting and a daily service would be good. And some local information would not go astray.
The hotel grounds and local area The fact they have a two tier system where guests staying at the Old Swan get dining reservation preferences and their own roped off lounge area that the Minster guests cannot use
Lovely setting, staff very friendly. Lovely meal. There were no biscuits on the hospitality tray.
The lovely village location and splendid grounds, the roaring fires and tasteful country house feel. The restaurant was a little disorganised. Four people took our orders and served us and the co-ordination was lacking and the service was therefore slow. Why not allocate given tables to specific waiting staff?
Character hotel. Standard room very small, we stayed in the barn conversion annexe, room was very small with single glazed window which was very noisy. It felt as if we were staying in a beach hut. There was a noise in the pipes which kept us awake most of the night. Also we had to travel to a nearby pub as the restaurant(which is another pub a minute) away was full, priority to guests with bb and e meal.
Location Staff and service
I liked the helpful staff in the restaurant who worked extremely hard on the sturday evening of our stay. I stayed in room 121 which was awful and i have complained personally to Diane Cornish the sales manager and i have yet to have the courtesy of a reply to my comments.
We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The first room was extremely hot, we spoke to reception who offered us another room without hesitation. The restaurant is excellent both for breakfast & dinner. After eating there the first night we definitely wanted to on our second night but forgot to book. So after a day out and about came back to hear it was fully booked being Saturday. However the staff were brilliant and said they would manage to squeeze us in and we weren't disappointed, the steak was perfect along with everything else! Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely grounds and setting. Will definitely go back.
lovely location, good restaurant
Setting and location excellent. Public rooms nice Scandinavian type rooms (118) were very very small. Little wardrobe and storage space. Walls were paper thin. We could hear neighbours even when they were whispering and using bathroom! Flight path from nearby RAF base. No double galzing. It was clear the accommodation was geared to single people on conferences/workshops. Massive disappointmant!
The reception and cleaning staff were extremely friendly and welcoming The setting is delightful and the food in the restaurant was very good. Our bath room was very cold - no apparent heating and interesting though the high ceilings are, there was a draught. This did not spoil our stay but if the weather had been colder it might have done.
food options, central location noisy room, needs triple glazing
Staff were helpful and friendly. Excellent breakfast
Excellent evening meal
Comfortable bed and good food Limited car parking
tea coffee in rooms the 'hot' breakfast was served before we had finished the cereal. It could have been hotter
lamb shank evening meal poor. good cooked breakfast.
Staff very friendly and helpful Rooms and facilities perhaps a bit tired...
Nice clean hotel and ideal central location in Witney. Breakfast service each morning was utterly hopeless.
I booked two rooms - 1 family room and 1 single room. The family room was spacious and comfortable. However, the single room was not very clean and there was evidence of damp - it was not satisfactory. There was also a lot of noise from the neighbouring bars on the Saturday night and whilst the Marlborough is not in a position to have any control of this it did mean that we got very little sleep until after 4am on the Sunday morning.
We were attending a wedding at the Fleece and this was ideally located. We requested a quiet room due to previous reviews about noise from the front, we were put in the annex in a newly decorated room. No issues with parking. Overall this hotel was ok, nothing special. Although the room was newly decorated the bathroom wasn't, there were 2 bad mis-spellings on the towel instructions in the bathroom which summed up the hotel really, lack of attention to detail. Remote control didn't work, bad reception on the 5 channels, really early breakfast (8:30 finish is far too early if you're on holiday), adequate breakfast but a lack of choice.
A small but very clean room. They need someone like the hotel inspector to call and sort them out. A very poor quality breakfast served on white linen. Toast served on same plate with the breakfast. No fruit, poor choice of cereals. Carton of orange juice on table.
Probably the most comfortable bed on earth, really peaceful surroundings, friendly kind staff, and not a bad pint either! Breakfast was nice, good service. Would definitely stay there again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the B&B is also a pub with good beer/ale selection so for dinner we ate in and the food was very good. Breakfast also good. Staff very helpful and courteous. Will stay there again. Easy 15-min. drive to the Park-and-Ride for frequent buses into Oxford. Well worth staying in the countryside. One comment only: Bit difficult finding the Inn as our GPS (Garmin 750 with up-to-date European maps) search did not find "Station Road" in Culham but we found the B&B using the GPS Lat/Long coordinates provided by the B&B in the Bookings.com advertisement - very clever. Nevertheless, a GPS is invaluable and a must when travelling in Britain! Using a conventional map to locate the B&B is not a problem.
Friendly staff, clean modern rooms No
£40 per night bnb for two was good value for a small ensuite room. Good fry up for breakfast. Good parking. Comfy bed. Noisey. Very near train station and freight trains go all night. 18Th Party in marquee ended just after midnight but expected it to go on longer. Only Sugar Puffs for breakfast cereal, no muesli etc
It was local to where I needed to be. Some of the staff were friendly. Other staff were a bit off specially at breakfast time. Guests had to make their own tea and coffee. I had to clean hair from the plugholes, in the basin and bathroom of our room.
The staff were excellent. They were lovely to our daughter and made us feel very welcome.
indian restaurant on site street light directly above skylight directly above bed
Cleanliness of bed linen. Towels clean and white. shower that worked very well. good breakfast. walls in the room needed the cobwebs dusted off and the curtain could do with a wash.
Nothing in pareticular The building had been converted on a budget with poor quality finishes. Access was via a steep external staircase and over a flat roof with no guard rail to the low parapet. The final exit door was secured with a dead lock that needed a key to open from the inside. None of this complies with the current building regulations.
Breakfast was a bit meagre
Attentiveness of the manager. Grouting in bathroom showed some mould and shower was erratic.
Fantastic food, host was very attentive nothing to much trouble None
Quiet location, comfortable rooms, great food! No fan in the room - it was very hot outside & the room could have benefited from an electric fan.
We found the room to be very clean and the staff to be cheerful and helpful. Overall a friendly atmosphere.
Very friendly and homely hotel with good food and bags of character in an appealing location. Approach to rear car park was in poor repair.
Friendly staff, comfortable room, good choice of beers and great breakfast.
Small and friendly with very high standards, good food, clean rooms, situated in a pretty rural area. The only problem seems to be finding the Crown & Garter, although satnav probably solves this one.
