Pros: The actual flight was great. The crew were very helpful and even brought out special food for our kids (one infant in lap and another 4 year old).
Cons: I found out on the return trip that AirBerlin customer service is impossible to work with. Basically, the problem was that Web check-in (24 hours before departure) did not work. Web checkin would have allowed me to select seats for my family within the same row--free of charge. Apparently it had something to do with some missing information during the transfer of our data from JustFly to AirBerlin. The AirBerlin staff was very rude on the phone and kept on insisting I pay extra to select seats in which my family is together. At one point the service person told me that it was not her job to fix the issue and that she was not getting paid to enter my trip information in order for me to access the Web-Checkin. Furthermore, there was no override she could do. Despite repeated attempts to talk to her manager, she told me all she had was a headphone and a computer and that talking to her manager was not possible--that her manager did not deal with such issues!! Frustrated, I called back several hours later and ran into the exact same problem as before. I did finally get ahold of a manager after about 1 hr on the phone. She seemed surprised that I would be so concerned about having my family together... clearly she was not very understanding of traveling families. She finally called Check-In (not sure why they are different department) and got our seats confirmed together. All together about 2.5 hrs of my life wasted. Although it was handled really poorly by their staff, we did end up getting seats that were together on the craft. We also got extra leg room seats, which I was surprised about. Still, it was extremely frustrating trying to have the simple peace of mind of having seats next to your wife and children on the plane. Next time we will think twice about purchasing tickets with AirBerlin.
