Explore Kentucky

Y’all

Slang used throughout the South to refer to a group of people. A contraction of the words “you all.”

Burgoo

Kentucky’s most famous stew. At a minimum, burgoo contains at least three meats, usually pork, beef and chicken. This is one food that is never prepared the same way twice. Whatever you can find throw it in the pot.

Hot Brown

An open-faced sandwich of turkey, ham, and bacon, topped with tomatoes and a mornay sauce and baked to a light crispness. This classic Kentucky dish was created in 1926 at the upscale Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville.

Derby

Known as “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” the Kentucky Derby is the longest-running continuous sporting event in the US and is practically a state holiday in Kentucky.

The Moonbow

This phenomenon is formed just like a normal rainbow, but appears at night and lasts for two or so days on either end of the full moon. Cumberland Falls in Corbin, KY, is one of the few places in the world that regularly produces a moonbow.

The Red

The nickname for the Red River Gorge. World-renowned for rock climbing and rappelling opportunities, The Red is one of the top destinations for these activities in the country.

Bar-B-Que

Western Kentucky has its own unique style of barbeque. Pork or mutton is slow smoked in stacked coals from hickory wood. and made with a vinegar-based barbeque sauce.
