KAYAK takes Halloween very seriously…maybe too seriously. We cover our cubicles in that fake cobwebs stuff that you can never *really* clean up. We loot the local Radio Shack for mechanical arms, screaming severed-head motion detectors, and strobe lights. Even more troubling, our co-founder dresses up as Mrs. Frankenstein, skirt and all (Umm, no. We don’t have any pictures). As we eagerly await October 31st, we thought we’d run a quick analysis to see where people are traveling to this Halloween.We were expecting to see increases in traditional Halloween destinations like Salem, MA, Sleepy Hollow, NY, and New Orleans, LA… and we did (searches to Salem up 168% in October and searches to Sleepy Hollow up 237%). But Washington, DC topping the list? Granted, the federal deficit is pretty scary, but what’s going on here?
Thankfully, one of the less geeky KAYAK employees pointed us in the right direction. Comedy Central fans are flocking to our nation’s capital on October 30th. The recent pleas by John Stewart and Stephen Colbert asking their viewers to book hotel rooms for the “Rally to Restore Sanity” or the “March to Keep Fear Alive” definitely seem to have worked.
