FAQs - booking Japan flights

  • Are there nonstop flights from Atlanta to Japan?

Yes, there are around five weekly nonstop flights from Atlanta to Japan. Delta is the only airline providing these flights, and they are available only from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND). Nonstop flights from Atlanta to Japan take approximately 14h 5min.

  • Which Japan Airport should I fly into from Atlanta?

There are three major airports in Japan you can fly to from Atlanta: NRT, HND, and KIX. If you’re flying to eastern Japan or Tokyo, consider flying to either NRT or HND. HND is ideal if you’re flying to eastern Japan and need a nonstop flight from Atlanta. It’s also best for domestic connections. On the other hand, NRT, another Tokyo airport, is great if you’re visiting Chiba prefecture or passing through with an international flight. KIX is a better option if you’re visiting western Japan and the Kansai region, and you can easily access Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto from KIX.

  • What are some things to do during a layover in Tokyo’s airports?

Since most flights into Japan go through Tokyo first, you’ll likely find your layover either at HND or NRT. At HND, you can explore art in the airport or visit Juveniland Tokyo to explore vintage toys and so much more. There’s also an observation deck where you can see the planes come and go as you enjoy a meal, or you can visit TIAT Sky Road and try your hand at piloting an aircraft in a simulator. At NRT, you can engage in Japanese cultural activities at the cultural exhibits or eat on the observation deck as you watch planes. There’s also the Oxygen Bar and a portable DVD rental stand where you can catch the latest movies.

  • What are the visa requirements for flying from Atlanta to Japan?

US citizens only need a valid passport and an onward ticket or return ticket to visit Japan. You don’t need a visa for visits lasting less than 90 days. However, for longer stays, you’ll need to apply for a visa at the Japanese Embassy.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Atlanta to Japan?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from Atlanta to Japan.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Atlanta to Japan?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to Japan from Atlanta is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Atlanta to Japan?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Japan with an airline and back to Atlanta with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Atlanta to Japan?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Japan from Atlanta up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Japan

  • Morning departure is around 14% more expensive than an evening flight, on average*.
  • Airports in Japan are designated first-class, second-class, or third-class, depending on the role they play. Consider flying into first-class airports such as Narita International Airport (NRT) and Kansai International Airport (KIX), since they serve as a hub for both domestic and international travel, and you can get to many destinations from first-class airports.
  • Most flights from Atlanta to Japan and vice versa operate in the late evening or early morning, so passengers can leave the airport late at night and arrive at their destination in the early morning.
  • New Chitose Airport (CTS) and Fukuoka Airport (FUK) serve as hubs for those flying to Hokkaido Island in the North and Kyushu Island in the south. You can get to these destinations by taking a flight from Tokyo.
  • If you’d like to save money on your flight from Atlanta to Japan, consider booking an open-jaw ticket, where you fly into one city and leave through another. This will save you costly backtracking across the country, and some airlines offer discounts if you use them to fly on domestic routes in Japan.
  • If you’ll be flying to other Asian countries through Japan, consider booking a flight to NRT, which offers more international flight options than other Japan airports.

They were an hour late and they didn’t have my wheelchair for me

Very frustrated with boarding gate crew. She announced the plane was small and they would be limiting us to one item to carry on. Not a problem for me as I understand the tiny planes have limited space!! Not the case here! It was a rather large plane and had plenty of room for bags! So because I don’t want to be one of “those people” who ignores the request to check a carry on I did so asking if I would be able to pick it up at the bottom of the ramp on arrival in Knoxville to which she responded “yes”! Then I watched as every other passenger held onto their 2 items and boarded!! Then when we arrived in Knoxville our 2 carry ons had been put with all the other luggage and we had to go to baggage pick up and wait for all the big checked bags to come off the carousel! So she lied!! Frustrating. Next time I won’t be so nice!

Checking in at the airport the agent only booked the first keg of my trip and had my checked luggage going to the airport with a layover! Never was issued a boarding pass for the second leg or received sticker fir my checked bag. All was well in the end! Delta agents helped to resolve the situation!!!

I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers. It makes it more fun to fly with them. I would however fly Delta again.

Big plane, long flight, absolutely no leg room and basically non existent air! I am 5”4’ and always travel Main Cabin, I was miserable on this plane and could barely move when we arrived in Cabo due to the cramped leg area!

The pilots were good. Disappointing when planes don't have electrical ports

Made the Atlanta to Pittsburgh trip many times, with Delta no issues

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I usually have a positive experience with Delta. Complimentary upgrades are always nice!

The experience was good and the flight departed on time and landed early

They lost our luggage and didn’t return it until 15 days AFTER we got back.

food worker strike caused lack of service. I know, not your fault but a bit of a inconvenience.

The staff on the WestJet flight were friendly and helpful. The flight was smooth and we arrived 30 minutes ahead of time.

The on time performance and the ease of boarding are great. The crew were cordial. During landing the pilot made a hard landing with some swerve that was a bit rough but other than that everything else is as smooth as it can be.

Horrible, flight on the way to Vegas was delayed significantly and then on my way back my second flight was cancelled

If they have a tv for movie or map during 5h flight could be better and the food can purchase on flight are ok with that.

I was seated next to someone so obese I had no space and was pushed against the window. I could not even put my tray down or work. My neck still hurts from that experience. They should not let that happen. Large people should have to pay for enough space.

We requested 2 wheel chairs upon arrival. On board an attendant told us to remain in our seats until everyone was off the plane. we were in row 11 and thought we would be off early. After all were off, a different attendant said we should leave, and that the chairs were gone. One was available for my friend who had just spent 9 days in hospital but I had to walk quite some distance. Eventually a cart arrived to take us the rest of the way. This was over an hour after our arrival. The staff at the terminal did their best to help us but if we had been allowed off with the other passengers, our ride home would have been an hour earlier.

Our flight experience was great! Flight staff was funny and offered great service. Made record flying time coming home from Vegas after having to wait for planes on the tarmac because of high winds

Seats can use more cushioning, it felt very hard. The snack option could be better

The flight and boarding were easy peasy. I was traveling with my 4-year-old, so a smooth boarding experience was especially appreciated. My only piece of feedback is really about where our gate was in O'Hare. They've shoved four gates into a tiny corner of the B terminal and there isn't early enough room or seating for everyone. Not United's problem, but did dent the overall experience.

We liked the fully reclinable seats. Had center seats, so it was difficult to talk to spouse. Crew was great

Aisle chair was good and liked the foot bar preventing you from putting your foot in the isle, The breakfast on this international flight to Zurich was horrible (Europeans, specially, used to good food) may make this a dealbreaker for booking with United Airlines again. I agreed with my Spanish fellow passenger.

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

There was no screens on board AND the WiFi didn’t work. My seat was broken and couldn’t recline so I couldn’t even sleep. The flight attendants didn’t offer anything to make it more comfortable. It was such an old cramped plane, when the person in front of me reclined I couldn’t even open my tray table. All the United ads talk about guaranteeing everyone gets a screen!

The Wi-Fi was unavailable on this flight for some reason.

The flight was delayed almost 2 hours. Bad customer service etc. I will never fly Luthansa. Ever!!!

On time take off…US cabins look tired and need of refresh!

Fine. Though no food or entertainment so the survey needs to be updated with those options.

Backpack should NOT allowed put in the flight bin , only put it under the seat. I can't find space put my carry on luggage!!! and I pay for it ! that was very bad experience

The boarding process and flight were great. However, I waited about 40 minutes for my luggage. It did not come up on the designated belt. Instead, everyone’s bags were on a cart. Not sure what the issue was, but we were not informed until another passenger went looking for her bags and found them.

There were delays on both ends. It made it less than excellent. This plane was great though

AA1537 the AC was not working properly. It was very hot and uncomfortable.

So uncomfortable to sit in the tiny space on a long, international. Food was rough. Please, less white flour and processed food.

Worst experience flying American Airlines. I fly with them often, so I was super disappointed in the service I received at gate 30 in LGA on May 24, mid-day. The flight was delayed twice. I was patiently waiting in the American Airlines lounge when I received the notice on my app that the plane was boarding 45 minutes before its newly re-scheduled take off of 4 pm (from the orginal 1:45 pm then 3:00 pm). It took me 5 min to travel from the lounge to the gate and when I arrived there at 3:20 flight gate attendant told me the flight had closed and that they announced for passengers multiple times. I showed them the notification on my app and they were really rude and unempathetic. The person who rescheduled my flight at customer service wasn't any happier but was at least helpful in getting me on the next flight.

Flight was 1/2 hour delayed leaving Phoenix. Otherwise it was an average flight. Flight crew on this trip was very nice.

Our flight was delayed 2.5 hrs due to plane being too hot! After 1.5 hrs, airline decided to use another plane but had to wait for gate, baggage transfer & beverage transfer. Anyone could tell after first half hour that another plane was required and although did not affect us many would miss connecting flights at Heathrow. I have found the stewards are not the friendliest in the industry and the food is questionable, even as I like airplane food normally, the best of the 2 flights was the yogurt & granola for breakfast.

Again, multiple delays and I eventually just canceled and drove!

Not sure why JAL partnered with American Airlines because their service is no where near similar. Flight attendants were not friendly and didn’t smile. Food was horrible…

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

Unable to initiate refund/reschedule the ticket #worst experience #lost 900$

Flight was delayed for almost 3 hours. Communication of gate change was poor. Email and screen said one gate and it was a different gate from that. Gate changed first to 64 B and then to 64 C. Originally it was 68B. 64C was not communicated properly!

This was a red eye return, so I doubt there would be anyway to make it better. Other than adding beds.

Direct nonstop flight was great. Flight was delayed and the crew announced a 2h delay on the sound system. 30 min or so later I hear my name on the sound system for immediate board. Several other passangers were late too. Reason: The crew incorrectly announced a 2h delay when in reality they meant a new boarding time at 2pm.

Plenty of room in the exit row. Sat on the plane an hour before taking off.☹️ Landed late and had to wait for gate availability.

Flight was on time early arrival better entertainment good staff.everything was excellent

Delayed leaving. On arrival we were taken to the airstrip and had to get off onto an over crowed bus, not all that passengers fit. Drove around the airport for 20 + minutes. Taken off the bus told to go upstairs 3 flights then all the passengers had to walk a mile or more , those of us old there was no one to direct us to were to go. I asked several people with no answers. Once I got to baggage claim my bags were not on the right bag claim. Once again asked for help and finally someone found my bags on a different carasel. Very frustrating.

Excellent host on board. Not so friendly check-in staff. Older plane with no food or entertainment due to short flight. Friendly captain and crew.

I don’t think there was entertainment? No mention of it. It was a good flight. Only complaint was my seat cushion was not attached and kept slipping.

Squeeze like sardines. ANA has much better leg room. The food on air canada was disgusting. Worse that left over microwave dinner. Like you heated up microwave dinner then saved it overnight, then microwaved it again and added nasty garnish to try to elevate but instead made it as edible as cat food.
