I booked a Prius from EZU (Auckland airport branch) through Kayak. What EZU provided was a Toyota Aqua, smaller than a Prius but also a hybrid. That was fine by me as I was travelling alone. I was picked up and dropped off at the airport in reasonable time. The car already had scratches on the hubcaps but this was duly noted and posed no problem on return. The car was otherwise clean and gave me no problems. I was disappointed that the handbook was in Japanese - EZU should obtain English language versions. The staff were efficient and pleasant to deal with.

Got a fantastic deal. Staff accommodated our time changes and I think they upgraded our vehicle as well. We loved our car (Suzuki Sprint) and had a great holiday as a result. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Avoid at all costs. Gave us a car with windshields wipers that were broken. We contacted branch manager Rachel and was promised a phone call twice. Rachel received the message but decided customer safety was not her concern and did not return my call or email for the past 3 business days and counting. You would think that a car that is not road-safe during rainy season would be a priority to her but it is not. We also waited an hour for our car rental. Pickup was for noon and we didn't leave until past 1. I was the first from my group to arrive and yet one of the last to get my car. They told me it would be a 10 minute wait but it was much longer than that. Car provided was in poor condition and unsafe to drive. Their response to poor reviews is always the same. They ask you to email them but then don't actually resolve the issue.

Overall we were happy with our experience. We found communication was lacking - we tried calling several times over multiple days to confirm details, and could not get through to anyone. The online chat was useless. We were also given wrong directions about where to meet the shuttle bus at the airport, which caused unnecessary delays.

We booked a one way rental. While there was a budget rental office at the Auckland airport only the downtown office did one way rentals. When we booked we were told there was a shuttle from the airport. This was definitely not true and we had to pay $180nzd and take a 30 minute drive to get to the budget rental office. That was a very unpleasant surprise after flying around the world with three young kids! I will avoid budget in the future because of that.

Scotty at Auckland airport was great, helpful friendly etc but after that all downhill. I’ve emailed thrifty 3 times about issues with the car and still have had no reply. I called their customer service and the issue was not resolved. The car has been returned but the office was closed at 4 pm on a week day so I could only drop the keys off and still have not been able to speak to anyone. Poor customer service.

Good Value . These are not brand new cars and have cosmetic flaws. But, as such, they provide excellent value. We rented a Prius which saved us a great deal on gas, but had scratches and a dent in the back bumper which didn't matter at all to us.

We were charged an extra credit card surchage of of 11 NZ$. I had a quote for this car and all fees, that should have applied. It is mandatory to pay with credit card, so there should not be an extra fee after all.

I wish there had been more clarity as to where we were to be picked up. We were waiting just outside international arrivals, but never told to walk across the street to the shuttle pick up. After much searching we found the car we had been looking for - an 8-seater to carry six of us and our baggage. We were extremely happy with the Hyundai Imax that was provided for us which was in top running condition. It also met our requirement of pickup at Auckland and drop off at Christchurch with a trans-shipment over the ferry at Wellington. The rates were the most competitive and the vehicle was a new one, having done just over 30,000 kms. It had a fuel efficiency of approx 10 km to a litre. Even the last row seat was comfortable and the vehicle had a good ride comfort. The boot was spacious and adequate for six suitcases and an equal number of handbags. One small issue nagged us though once in a while - the left side rear door would at times not open from the inside even though the child-lock was not in the on position. Overall, a very happy and comfortable experience.

Compact SUV

The pick up was amazing, the staff on that day talked us through everything. The drop off however was bad, the location was terrible to find and there wasn’t anyone there. Just a note on the door saying that they’re already of for the day (hours before the normal closing time). Since I had some questions about the rental, it was disappointing that I didn’t had anyone to talk to. The car itself was good, besides the point that the connection to the phone wasn’t working, wich made the experience less pleasant. It was a big safety issue trying to navigate with the phone while there was no good place to put it. The staff that we called just told us that there’s nothing he can do because it’s probably a issue with the cords in the car.

The pickup and drop-off locations were odd and confusing. The car was also in average condition, with a few scratches, dents, and high km. I was expecting an airport dropoff, and getting the car returned was a bit of a hassle. Kind regards, Rex
