Riviera Maya has a few public transportation options. At Cancun International Airport, you’ll see a bus labeled ADO, which will drop you wherever you want. Minivans are another option, and they’re cheaper compared to taking a bus or a taxi. Public transportation is ideal if you’re traveling alone and don’t have a lot of luggage, but if you prefer traveling on your own schedule, renting a car is the better choice. The costs won’t add up as they would using public transportation, and as long as you book your car in advance, you can avoid the tariffs.
Be ready to run into two toll roads: one in Yucatán State and another in Quintana Roo State. You’ll have to pay the toll in cash with pesos, since credit cards aren’t accepted. The general driving atmosphere is okay in Riviera Maya if you don’t give the police a reason to stop you. However, local drivers don’t always use their turn signals, so drive slowly and be vigilant. Additionally, watch out for speed bumps.
It is common to find car rental companies that only rent to individuals over twenty five years old. You can still find some that will rent to people over twenty one years old, but expect such a company to charge an additional cost for young drivers. You’ll also need a valid driver’s license, your passport, a credit card to pay for the deposit, a printout of your agreement with the rental company, and complete insurance coverage. Having proof of coverage is very important in case you’re involved in an accident.
