Top tips for renting a car in Riviera Maya

  • The roads in Riviera Maya are moderately good, making it a safe and straightforward place to drive. Most, if not all, car rental companies in the area offer a variety of cars for rent. Everything from SUVs to economy cars to compact cars and minivans are available. The most popular option is the SUV, but make sure you get a car with a well-functioning suspension, ground clearance, and a front spoiler so that you can navigate the numerous speed bumps on the road. Also, pick a white car if possible, which reflects the sun and keeps the interior of the car cool.
  • Always wear a seatbelt while in Riviera Maya, Mexico. That goes for children as well. However, having a child car seat is not mandatory if you have a child younger than five with you. Regardless, it is safer to use one while traveling to keep the child safe. You can rent one in advance from the car rental company during the booking process at a cost. If you’re renting from the airport and would much rather buy your own, go ahead, but make sure the child is seated in the back seat and is wearing a seat belt.
  • Crossing the border into or out of Mexico in a rental car is possible, as long as the company you rented from allows cross-border driving. Be sure to notify them of your intentions when booking. You must also be a US resident or have a valid visa or permanent residency for this to work. You’ll also need Mexican automobile liability insurance or proof of liability insurance, a vehicle rental contract, and a valid driver’s license.
  • If you plan on traveling during the high season, be sure to book your rental car in advance of your trip. No matter the time of year, your safest bet is to have a car reserved before arriving in Mexico, just in case. It helps to have cash (Mexican pesos) to pay for gas, and always tip the gas attendants. Be sure to always check that you’re getting the right amount of gas for what you’re paying.
