I had flat within 10 minutes if not sooner of driving it off the lot, car had to be towed because there was no spare, then had to be ubered to hotel, then back to airport the next morning, someone should have brought me a new rental. Upon getting my replacement I felt like the women behind the counter were trying to say I was scamming the system, even asked for proof of my texted voucher from Avis. It was all too much.

Don't get scammed!!! I booked with Avis through QEEQ with the belief that AVIS is a reputable brand. After booking, I read countless reviews about people being scammed by AVIS at SJO and LIR in Costa Rica, so I came fully prepared: international driver’s license, printed voucher, Visa insurance letter and policy, and I even videoed the car at pickup and drop-off. It didn’t matter. I booked a full-size/premium SUV for $698.75 USD and was given a Nissan X-Trail instead, a lower-class vehicle, while being told it was “equivalent.” It isn’t. No price adjustment was offered. The final bill came to $1,136.78 USD, over $400 more than booked—with charges that don’t resemble the original agreement at all. I was told at pickup that it would be corrected at drop-off. It wasn’t. At drop-off, they refused to provide proper documentation. The inspection just said “All Good”, no signature, no name, no receipt. The agent wouldn’t even identify themselves. The damage deposit is still being held by Avis (not Visa), despite their terms stating it should be released after return with no damage. Instead, they later claimed it takes 15–30 days, contradicting their own agreement. Avis Costa Rica operates as a franchise, so AVIS International has no authority over them and they've become a fraudulent operation consistently scamming tourists, ignoring booking contracts, adding extra erroneous fees, refusing to release the credit card holds, refusing proper documentation, refusing to follow their own terms and agreements that they provide you with and there is zero recourse. Don't get scammed. Book elsewhere, AVIS will be more expensive and far more stressful than elsewhere.

The pickup experience was extremely disappointing. There were many, many customers and one associate. We were finally directed to the actual pickup location to complete transactions.

They didn't have the car that I rent and provide me a electric one instead on the hybrid, therefore I was not able to make my trip there was not enough electrical chargers on my route so sad

Took way too long to get car. Took 2 hours and we only got a car because someone at the Payless counter, who had no customers, helped us get a car. The lines at Budget and Avis were ridiculously long and the communication with the garage to see what cars were available was completely inefficient. We had planned to drive to watch the Artemis space launch, a once in a lifetime opportunity for our children and they missed it because Avis is poorly operated. The employees were kind and empathetic but completely powerless and said they've complained to management but nothing ever changes. Avis clearly does not care about the customer experience.

Avis now ranks below fox in my book... and that is hard to do. The "legal" term for what I experienced was bait and switch. EV (said my credit card rental coverage probably didn't cover Electric vehicles and the only other option was a 10 person van which at 5'3" and 67 years old would be unsafe for me to drive. I expect to have my original price honored and am ready to raise hell if it's not.

At pick up the woman at the counter was very friendly and efficient. At drop off I’d have like a little bit more attention but the people there were polite and clearly very busy with a large number of drop offs at the same time so I understand

Terrible experience. Travelled with my wife and two small children. Due to airline issues we were delayed several times and got there 3 hrs after the scheduled pick up time. Went to the office and they told me that because I was late they had nothing available for me. I was told they had over booked as well and that even if I showed up on time, there was a chance I wouldn’t get a car. I asked if there was anything available and the worker got on her phone and walked to the back. Came back and told me that they could get me a car only if I paid $700.00 cash. This would of been more than what I was quoted for online. I asked what kind of scam they were running and they told me to leave. I had more than enough money to pay, but the fact that they were trying to get more money out of me due to our situation does not sit well. Terrible customer service and experience. My recommendation is to look for local companies!
