Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Boston
Don't rent a car in Boston unless you're spending significant time in the suburbs.
BrandonMay 2026
Rent a crossover or smaller if you plan on driving in the city at all. Avis didn't have the small SUV we rented and gave us a large Traverse instead and it was too large to even fit in the driveway of our B&B.
Verified travelerMay 2026
Depends on your travel plans but I would suggest nothing large. Parking is tight in Boston.

1. Allow tons of time (1.5 hours) to pick up your car. 2. Know that you need extra insurance in MA and will have to pay for EZPass. 3. Know that Hertz doesn’t allow the spouse to drive for free unless you book under the Gold Plus member’s name. (My spouse is a member but they wouldn’t count it because I made the reservation.)

If you aren’t familiar with Boston, have your GPS ready. It can be confusing. Also, there are a lot of one way streets, so watch the signs. You always have to be aware of which lane to be in. You might actually have to switch lanes frequently just to drive straight ahead, as lanes that were drive straight lanes turn into turn lanes.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Give yourself extra time as all rental cars are off property. You have to take a blue rental car bus to the center and then make sure you get on the correct blue bus when returning (as they go to different terminals at Logan).

I rented a car to drive home to ME so it’s a non issue but Boston is an extremely difficult city to drive in if you’ve never been here before. There is minimal signage and people from Massachusetts drive very differently. When they want to merge they just do. You must be on the defense at all times. There is always traffic too. You do not need a car if staying in the city proper in fact I’d recommend against it. Between the T and Uber and really just walking, you can get everywhere you need to, plus there really isn’t any parking except expensive garages if you’re lucky enough to find one. And if you’re renting from the airport to go elsewhere you’re fine with GPS. But with GPS trying to find something downtown? Good luck. You’ll be stuck in traffic for days and never find what you’re looking for. If you’re renting a car to drive to the cape especially in busy season I hope your flight is very early or late because you will be stuck in traffic for hours as well
Verified travelerMay 2023
Parking was the worst. You might as well Uber or bike everywhere. Driving was interesting as I'm used to lanes and there aren't many lanes here; the roads kind of just throw you in there and see who wins lol. The drivers are pretty nice though and easy to flow with. The roads were very clean and in good condition.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Driving is very challenging in Boston. Many roads that are underground and then have to double back to get on the proper highway. Actually, my Google maps did a reasonable job considering all the underground transportation.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Be patient! And careful on the dropoff not to take the keys with you when you drop the car, there is a $250 charge for doing that.
KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Boston
Boston has plenty of vibrant nightlife. You can enjoy fun activities at Tunnel, Royale, Jillian’s at Lucky Strike, Icon, Banshee Bar Boston, and many others. When visiting the city to enjoy these, consider getting around by using a rental car. Boston car rentals make it easy and fast to travel from one nightlife venue to the next. For instance, it takes about 18 minutes to get to Banshee Bar Boston from Jillian’s at Lucky Strike by car, compared to approximately 40 minutes by public bus.
Rent a car during your stay in Boston to gain ultimate flexibility in exploring the vibrant city and its surrounding areas, such as Connecticut and New Hampshire. A rental car makes trips to destinations outside the city center, like the Foxborough Football Stadium (28 miles away), much easier and more convenient, as it can be reached in about half an hour by car.
Boston has a lot of traffic, and navigating through its many intersections can be confusing at times. However, navigation systems can easily be added to a rental car, which will help you reach further destinations without any problems. Boston’s pedestrians are known to jaywalk, and cyclists often don’t adhere to traffic light regulations, so paying extra attention and double-checking for pedestrians and cyclists while driving is very important.
Boston is one of the cities with the worst rush hour traffic in the US, so try to avoid it by traveling to your destination before or after peak times (rush hour is most intense between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays). Intersections along Interstate 93 and Route 128 are particularly known for heavy congestion and should be avoided during rush hour if possible, as alternative side roads are also often congested. Additionally, bear in mind that winters in Boston can bring snow and ice, so drive extra carefully.
If you are driving through a school zone, you must not exceed 20 mph. In popular areas with narrow streets and curves, the speed limit is 30 mph, while you are allowed to drive at 40 mph on the outskirts of the city, where there is more space. On regular highways, the speed limit is 50 mph, and 60 mph on interstate highways. All roads are marked with speed limit signs. Especially at intersections, there may be traffic cameras, so be sure to adhere to all road regulations.
Boston is surrounded by amazing attractions in its neighboring cities, making it an ideal weekend getaway destination for those looking to relax and enjoy some adventure. Consider renting a car in Boston, MA, to visit Mary O’Malley Waterfront Park with friends and family. The park is about 4.6 miles from downtown Boston, and it will take approximately 12 minutes to get there via the US-1 N route. On the other hand, taking a public bus will take longer, with an estimated travel time of about an hour.
Boston City welcomes cyclists to ride on roads that are also used by vehicles. It is in your best interest to be vigilant of cyclists as you drive on the streets. Cyclists sometimes run red lights and switch between cycle tracks and roads when crossing. When approaching junctions and pedestrian crossings, make sure the way is clear before proceeding to avoid injuring cyclists and pedestrians. Otherwise, you could face hefty fines or jail time for breaking traffic laws. It can be tricky if your car rental has faulty insurance coverage. Be sure to leave the pick-up point only when your insurance is in order.

Overall I thought it was a good experience. Was 39 mins late with drop off due to traffic and was charged an extra day. Was told about “all the tolls” and encouraged to purchase the toll package and did not go over a single toll bridge. Had explained my travel to the representative and she was insistent on my purchasing the package. Package cost me $60 and no toll bridge crossed. Budget refused to honor my rental of a small SUV, saying it was simply an economy class car and that it was kayaks fault for indicating the type of cars listed were small suvs. They told me they were “upgrading” me to a Toyota Corolla but it absolutely was a down grade and the car was as basic and underwhelming as they come. I asked to see the manager. I showed my small SUV reservation. He too said it was an economy class reservation and refused to answer whether they had my reserved type of suv in the lot. Also refused to give a different suv. He then with a straight face offered me a minivan. They were disparaging. They tried to upsell prepaid tolls and demanded to know who my insurance provider is when I declined additional coverage. It was the worst rental car experience I’ve had.

They didn’t honor my reservation. They said there was a glitch on the system and no cars were available.
The pickup and drop-off were both easy. There was damage to the vehicle, however, that had not been documented. The gas tank was also slightly less than full (noticeably so) but the gauge read full when I returned it but I was charged for refueling for some inexplicable reason. I had to call and have that charge removed but I won't rent from Avis again in the near future based on these experiences.

They did not have the vehicle class I reserved at the time of pickup. They charged me for the e-toll premium service and did not offer the standard toll option even when I asked about the high price. And finally, the vehicle was provided with less fuel AND returned with a full tank, but despite that the receipt reflected that the vehicle was returned short on gas and I had to pay a fuel fee. I was able to get them to agree to refund me the fuel fee, but only after calling them and providing photos, which I had thankfully taken. This was the worst rental experience I have ever had.

Double charged (not pending holds--actual charges) and still waiting for a response from the company. Many pre-trip messages insisting that I should check in online to "skip the desk and go straight to the car." Fortunately I didn't do that, because upon arrival, numerous unhappy travelers were turned away at the garage and sent back to the desk to check in. There were physical signs everywhere asking people to check in online and go straight to the garage. Terrible treatment at the desk. The person lied and said, verbatim, "We only have electric cars right now." and asked if I needed instructions on how to find charging stations. I insisted on a gas car and suddenly he was able to make one available--for twice the price we had reserved online! Don't lie to me and say there are not any gas cars then. Bad service in general too. He asked me how to spell my name WHILE actively holding my photo ID, and then later asked "What kind of card is that" after I had paid. (He meant Visa vs. Mastercard, which, again, you have my card. Stop wasting my time.) Car center console was dirty with brown sticky residue. Horrible experience start to finish, and I'm still not even finished since I'm still waiting for the charges to be corrected.
The express pick up process was confusing and could have been much more smooth. I’ve done the express pick up on an app before and it was easy and clear. But with Dollar at Logan, the app didn’t provide clear instructions on where to go so I ended up standing in a short line. Overall it was a fairly quick but I paid the extra money to skip the counter, which was definitely not worth the extra cost.

I am fighting that still. Rip off company you are doing business with. I request a response. Peter Watkins

We waited THREE hours to pick up our car. It was October. Unreal. People were nice at counter but logistics in efficiency must be improved.

We didn’t pick up our car, because my husband ended up with sepsis and was in the hospital. The reason I gave.Dollar only a mediocre radio is because I called the pick up site to tell them we would not be able to pick up our car, and they would not cancel our reservation, because it was made through you. That was frustrating, because we knew someone else might need that car, so I think you need to change your policy so that when people have a problem they can cancel we tried to cancel through you and found it almost impossible. Even our son who is a computer expert, had a difficult time finding how to communicate with you about canceling our car so not a good experience.

Supplier choice
Awful. My father had a heart attack and I wasted hours trying to change the reservation. I finally gave up and rented a car for the adjusted dates from Budget. I also requested a refund or credit and no one bothered responding. I’ll never use Dollar again.
My experience was outstanding! Excellent car, spotless and fun to drive. I left my phone in the car and went back to retrieve it. The customer service rep took my information and went looking for the car. Ten minutes later she came back with it in her hands. What a great relief 😅
