The Barcelo Maya Colonial hotel is situated on one of the world's most impressive beaches with turquoise, crystalline waters, within the luxury Barcelo Maya Beach Resort. The hotel has 420, all of which boast a complete range of facilities to ensure that your stay in the Mexican Caribbean is an unforgettable experience. Enjoy the hotel's incredible facilities, which include 8 restaurants, 2 buffet restaurants and 4 speciality restaurants: the Japanese restaurant Kyoto, the Mare Nostrum fish restaurant, an Italian restaurant Capri and the Santa Fe steak house. You can also enjoy the 2 restaurants situated on the beach: El Mariachi and the Palmeras restaurants. The hotel also boasts a business centre, a children's club, pools and gift shops. Thanks to its great location, you will be able to enjoy such as sailing, diving, windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing. The resort also has 7 floodlit tennis courts (we supply tennis racquets and balls), a gym, 18-hole mini-golf, beach volley
This was the best vacation, gorgeous hotel, excellent service. Would recommend this place any day. Can't wait to return! Rene from Olympus tours was awesome in country!
Staff less accommodating at the restaurants with seating large groups, and our party was 13. It seemed a bother to them every meal. A pain! The shows were much better two yrs ago and that's one of the reasons we returned, for this extra. Overall disappointing and we won't be returning to Barceló Maya Colonial!!!
We recently returned from a five night stay, June 17 thru June 22nd, at the Barecelo Maya Colonial. We had a group of four - my wife and two twenty-something daughters in two Junior Suites with pool side views. We have made numerous visits to the Caribbean and Eastern Mexico, either by cruise or all-inclusive resorts. Our primary reason is for beach activities, sun, and fun. The Barcelo Resort properties did not disappoint us! We spent five days on the beach, in the ocean, and the great pools with access to wonderful swim up bars. We love to snorkel and we had the great opportunity to swim on multiple occasions with sea turtles near the reef area by the sister property - the Barcelo Maya Palace. Our daughters also experienced scuba diving for the first time with the friendly and very professional dive staff, Dressel Drivers. We took advantage of four of the ala carte restaurants and all were very good but this is how we ranked them: #1 Japanese Steakhouse - excellent show and food, #2 Italian, #3 Steakhouse, #4 Seafood. The buffet restaurants were better than any of the all-inclusive resorts that we had previously experienced with plenty of variety that was always fresh with very friendly staff. The Jaguar Disco Club was a lot of fun with a large dance floor. I believe that we got 'more than our bang for our buck' and have already recommended this resort to family and friends!
My fiance first visited this Resort in May 2011 and we stayed for a total of 5 days. We decided on day 2 that 5 days was just not enough and so when we came back again in December of 2011 we stayed for a total of 8 days, which still could have been longer!!!! The resort size is huge and due to the size, it never feels crowded except at mealtime when you wonder where all the people came from. The food was never disappointing and the buffet has a selection for every food lover. The staff does a great job at making sure they are meeting everyones expectations of cleanliness and needs. The staff show hard work and although I have read that some guests have encountered unhelpful staff, we have not, but I also believe that is something that happens from time to time anywhere and cannot be used as a major factor in determining a resort to visit. As far as recreational activities, there are all kinds of things to do on the resort itself, and it has easy access to tours whether you choose to venture out on your own or pay for a group tour. We are returning this May of 2013 and I do not expect anything less than an absolutely beautiful, relaxing stay. (You will find this is a resort that guests at the resort say they repeately come to year after year after year for the last 8-10 years)
We have just returned from a 10 night stay in The Barcelo Maya Colonial Beach Resort. We really enjoyed our stay , the resort is beautiful , on a gorgeous beach. The room was lovely and housekeeping was very good. It was quite busy as two hotels on the complex were closed, the food in the restaurants were very good and the staff worked very hard . There was a great choice of food available and the buffet area's were spotless. Restaurant manager's were very visible and on hand in the restaurants. Well done to all Barcelo staff
My experience at this hotel was awesome. Staff was friendly and we overall had a great experience I do recommend this hotel and will love to come back soon. ;)
Nice hotel and good food. Needed a couple things to make it a truly Mexican trip. Maybe some mariachi music and aztec and regional folkloric dancers at night? Bathrooms closer to the pool. Front desk personel need better training on dealing with people. Could of used pool waiters too. The rooms were nice, but reaching their limit and needed upgrading. Needed better access to reservations at the restaurants. Still a good trip. Went with 6families, pretty much same observations by all. The spa was above average, very good. Thanks
My husband, my 2 boys, 7 and 12, and I stayed at Barcelo Colonial recently. It was a nice hotel for the money. It's a combination of 6 hotels all situated on one large complex. I chose Colonial because of the reviews I found. Most of the reviews, if not all, were very good. In the complex, the Colonial was middle of the pack. Pros: -Beachfront, very convenient and clean, never an issue finding a lounge chair with plenty of palm trees for shade, didn't use the watersports so can't comment on that -Large pools, clean, never felt crowded, two swim up bars, one side of pool had music, other was nice and quiet, lap pool available -Buffet had good variety, we were all able to find something we liked -Service was good for the most part, there were some servers in the buffet who weren't helpful (didn't greet or give us water until we were well into our meal#, most servers were very good which we tipped here and there, especially in the a la carte restaurants -We upgraded to a premium room that was very nice, pool view, spacious, clean, double beds and a living area to relax in Cons: - We checked in on a Saturday night around 10pm and was given a room with one king size bed. We were told to come back the next morning for a room with two doubles. When we came back the next morning, we were told there were no rooms with two double beds. The only rooms with double beds available at that point were the premium rooms which were an additional cost. I was a bit upset about the situation but am glad we chose the premium room. Good pool view, free room service, discounts in the stores, larger space and in a quiet area that we liked. - Alcoholic drinks were not strong. I like to drink Sangrias, Mojitos, etc and could only taste the non-alcoholic part of the drink. My husband started tipping the bartendars and we started getting more alcohol in our drinks, but not much like the States. The complex will require a bit of walking which my family and I enjoyed. There was always food and...
Multiple attractions, the beach is beautiful, excellent service. My only recommendation reserve a la Carte restaurants the day you check in.
A Good place, wonderful beach, nice and clean area, great food, but the internet connection should be improved.
This was our second time vacationing at Barcelo Maya and we love this resort! We upgrated to the Tropical this time and the expanded amenities were wonderful! The resort is clean, friendly, beautifully decorated and perfect for a family vacation. We have recommended to resort to many friends who have also rebooked. I don't think you can go wrong with Barcelo Maya!
This was our first time to an All Inclusive hotel, and this place was fine and we felt safe. Although a far ride (1 1/2 to 2 hours) from the airport, once we arrived, we didn't need to leave. We went with family - the place is so big, I'd recommend booking rooms close to each other, otherwise you'll spend lots of time roaming the halls. Food was OK, they had a huge variety.
Very nice and clean resort with excellent food. Making dinner reservations was a complete disaster, even though they were less than 70% booked. Our only options for the steak house was Monday evening, either 5:30 or 10:00 PM. Wonder what it would have been if they were fully booked. But once we got in the restaurants, the food and service was outstanding. The bar tenders at the pools and lobbly bars were incredibly slow, and it didn't matter how much or little you tipped. I started out tipping a couple dollars per drink, service was horrible. At the end, I did not tip at all and got the same slow service. And any complaints to the management was like talking to a brick wall. I suspect management instructed the bartenders to be as slow as possible so that they could save a few bucks on drinks. If you are going to go to this resort, I would go now. Management will eventually run it completely in the ground.
We've been to Playa del carmen area 6 times. Be warned!! This is a very beautiful location but very disappointing service & staff. A couple things really bugged us. One is we went with our 15 year old son and requested 3 room cards. They would only give you two cards. One of us would have to find the other, since we only had two! They could've cared less! I've never had a 5 star hotel, not accommodate such a simple request! Booking a restaurant was equally frustrating. YIkes... the concierge was boarder line rude! When we'd ask a question, she'd roll her eyes and give a very short answer.... The all-inclusive food... nothing special but OK, however the bar staff sucked! When you'd order a drink the bar staff was mediocre at best & be ready to wait!!!. FYI..I the cheapest alcohol is all you'll get!!! You have to dress up for the restaurants but the food is similar to the buffet.. so whats the point! Seemed silly to us! Bugged my husband more than me, he had to wear long pants. We've stayed at Palace Resorts in the past and we'll only be going back to their resorts. The Palace resorts have the most gracious, accommodating staff, not to mention fun! ...and top shelf alcohol included. This Barcelo has the facility to be a top notch resort but fall very short in service!!!
The setting is beautiful...pools, beach are great. The rooms are musty smelling and the beds and pillows are very hard!!
