Whether you’re road-tripping or arriving after a long flight, settling into your hotel room is a welcome reward after a long travel day.
But if you arrive before the standard afternoon check-in time, which is usually between 3 and 4 p.m., you may not be able to access your room for hours. The solution: get an early check-in at hotels.
However, early check-in may not be free, and it’s never guaranteed. That said, there are still ways to make it happen. Here’s what to know about how to get early check-in at a hotel.
What is the normal check-in time at hotels?
Most hotels have a standard check-in time of between 3 and 4 pm, but those can vary depending on the property and where in the world you’re traveling.
Airport hotels, where guests often arrive early in the morning and late into the evening, are often more flexible. Occasionally, independently owned hotels may also have more flexibility.
Hotel check-in time basics
Whether hotel staff can offer early check-in depends on several factors. Here are a few:
Availability | The most important aspect of whether you can check in early at a hotel is whether clean rooms are available. |
Timing and occupancy levels | Early check-in often depends on timing. If you’re visiting during peak season or on the weekend, your chances are lower. |
Room type | If you’re open to a different room category, you might have a better chance of getting an early check-in. For example, a standard room with a less-than-ideal view may be sitting empty and ready for you. |
Loyalty programs | Early check-in is sometimes included as a loyalty program perk. If you’re a member, this may work to your advantage. If not, it could be a disadvantage if the hotel is holding rooms for early check-in for high-status customers. |
Personal circumstances | Hotels may prioritize early check-in for guests with special needs, medical requirements, or other special circumstances. |
How to get early check-in at a hotel: What to know

Whether you’re hoping for a nap, need to take a work call, or are simply eager to get settled and maximize your itinerary, an early check-in can make for a much smoother travel day.
Securing an early check-in at hotels often depends on timing and hotel policies. But over the years, I’ve learned several tricks to help increase my chances.
Research hotels with early check-in times before booking
When evaluating potential hotel options for a trip, I always take note of check-in times. It’s a good idea to double-check on the property’s website. Check-in times are also stated with an online booking confirmation.
Join hotel loyalty programs
Many hotels, especially major global chains like Marriott and Hyatt, offer early check-in preference to members of their loyalty programs. The higher tier status, the higher a guest’s chances of their request being accommodated.
Some loyalty programs explicitly list early check-in and/or late check-out as a benefit. These include:
Hotel chain loyalty programs | Early check-in policy |
---|---|
IHG One Rewards | Early check-in is published as a benefit for Platinum Elite and Diamond Elite guests (but it’s also subject to availability, as noted). |
Marriott Bonvoy | Ambassador Elite members get a “Your24” benefit that allows them to choose a check-in time and a corresponding check-out time 24 hours later. Requests must be made two days in advance. |
World of Hyatt | Explorist and Globalist members can reserve a 9:00 am check-in for free. For those with lower-tier status, including Discoverist or Member, the perk is available starting at $10. |
Take advantage of credit card perks
In addition to a hotel’s loyalty programs, several major credit cards offer early check-in as a benefit. As more hotels require a payment for early check-in, these perks can be a game-changer and offer big savings. Such programs include:
Credit card program | Early check-in perks |
---|---|
American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts | Offered to Amex Platinum, Business Platinum, or Centurion-branded American Express card holders, this program allows members to book from more than 1,000 luxury hotels and receive extra perks, including noon check-in when available. |
Capital One Premier Collection | This program, available only to Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders, offers a slew of benefits, including early check-in if available. |
Chase The Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection | Offered to Amex Platinum, Business Platinum, or Centurion-branded American Express cardholders, this program allows members to book from more than 1,000 luxury hotels and receive extra perks, including noon check-in when available. |
Consider downgrading rooms or paying to upgrade
If the specific room type you booked isn’t available, the front desk staff may offer a downgraded room that’s sitting vacant for early check-in. They may also give you the option of upgrading (and paying for) a more deluxe room available.
Request early check-in as far in advance as possible
If getting into your room early is critical – perhaps you’re coming off an overnight flight or have an important business call — be sure to request it in advance. Some hotel booking platforms, like Marriott, let you request this explicitly when booking online or input it as a “special request.”
You can also use an online chat feature or call the hotel. If you opt to call, be sure to use the local number to reach the front desk instead of speaking to someone from the reservations team. Keep in mind that while the representative may be able to make note of your request, it will likely not be guaranteed. You can also follow up in person when you arrive at the property.
When you do make your request, be sure to be courteous and understanding, whether you’re speaking to someone on the phone or in person. Politely explain your reasons for checking in early and, if you’re calling ahead of time, what time you expect to arrive.
And remember that the hotel representative may not be able to grant your request. (But you’ll certainly improve your chances if you’re nice while asking.)
Ask about early check-in fees
While many hotels offer early check-in complimentary if possible, others publish a set of fees guests can pay to get access. Again, be sure to check in advance so you’re not taken by surprise upon arrival.
Take advantage of mobile check-in
Mobile check-in is becoming more common, and I’ve been successful at getting into my hotel room early using this feature on a hotel’s app. You can usually check in on a hotel app between 48 and 24 hours ahead of time; as soon as it’s available, go ahead and check in, and be sure to make your request for an early check-in.
Recently, I had a reservation at a Marriott and used the app to request a noon check-in. At 11 am, my phone buzzed to notify me my room was ready and gave me access to a mobile key.

How star ratings can impact early check-in

Luxury hotels are known to go above and beyond to accommodate guest requests, including those for early check-in, compared to budget or mid-range hotels.
While not always the case, higher-end hotels tend to have higher service standards, more robust loyalty programs, and higher staff-to-guest ratios in order to provide a premium experience for guests.
Several rating systems exist to help you figure out how upscale a hotel is.
Forbes Travel Guide
Using a rating system of 1 to 5 stars, the Forbes Travel Guide uses experienced, anonymous inspectors to meticulously evaluate a hotel’s amenities, quality of accommodations, and overall guest experience.
A property with one star offers basic accommodations, while 2-stars are considered “comfortable.” 3-star hotels are “excellent,” and 4-stars are “exceptional.” 5-star hotels, the pinnacle of luxury, offer an extraordinary level of personalized attention to detail.
AAA Diamond Rating
Similar to the Forbes Travel Guide, the AAA (American Automobile Association) Diamond Rating system is a well-known system rating hotels on a range of one to five. One-diamond properties offer no-frills while a five-diamond hotel marks the epitome of luxury and sophistication.
AAA Diamond Ratings are awarded by experienced inspectors who conduct unannounced visits to evaluate room quality, facilities, dining experiences, and overall ambiance.
Michelin Guide
While the Michelin Guide is most well-known for rating restaurants, Michelin also rates select hotels on a range of 1-star to 5-star with a focus on properties in Europe and Asia. Michelin inspectors place a strong focus on extraordinary attention to detail and overall guest experience, as well as the uniqueness of a hotel.
Can you check into a hotel at any time? The benefits of getting in early
While most hotels have a standard check-in time of around 3:00 pm, they can sometimes offer an early check-in. Gaining early access to your room can offer several advantages:
A chance to rest or freshen up
Often, travel days require early wake-up times or crossing time zones. Early check-in means you get access to a quiet, private environment for some rest and rejuvenation before setting out on your adventures. Similarly, if you’re traveling with a baby or small kids, getting them into a quiet space for a nap or downtime can make your day a lot smoother.
More bang for your buck
Paying a nightly hotel rate only guarantees you access to the room typically from about 3:00 pm to a standard checkout time between 11:00 am and noon the next day. Getting in early lets you enjoy the comfort of the room longer.
More convenient
If you have a busy itinerary planned for the day of your arrival, early check-in gives you a home base to drop off your luggage, get settled, unpack, and head out for the day.
A quiet place to work
With the rise of remote work, there’s been a rise in the popularity of the “workcation,”in which people travel to new locations, work during the day, and explore at night. Whether you need to get in a full work day or take a business call from a quiet spot, a hotel room beats a public space every time.
What to do if you don’t get an early check-in

While early check-in offers a lot of advantages, it is not guaranteed. Depending on occupancy levels, the time of year, and when you arrive, the property simply may not be able to accommodate your request.
But don’t fret: You still have options. Here’s what to do if you don’t get an early check-in at your hotel.
Ask for a courtesy room
Occasionally, some hotels have what’s known as a courtesy room where guests can change their clothes and briefly relax while they’re waiting for their room to be ready. Not all hotels offer this amenity, but it never hurts to ask.
Visit the hotel spa or pool
If your hotel has a spa or pool area, this is the perfect time to take advantage of it. Treat yourself to a massage or facial, swim a few laps, or simply kick back in a lounger – all of which can be restorative, relaxing ways to shake off the stress of travel.
Business travelers, meanwhile, can head to the business center, which is often a quieter, calmer area than the main lobby.
Store your bags and go exploring
Hotels will almost always be happy to store your bags for free if you’re unable to get an early check-in (the service is usually available after check-out, too). Stash your stuff and start exploring your new destination – an ideal way to take advantage of your early arrival.
Pro tip: Keep valuables like your wallet and passport with you, and take a photo of the ticket stub the staff provides in case you lose it.
Book your room the night before
The best way to ensure your room is available for an early check-in is to book it for the previous night. This might seem like an unnecessary expense, but if it’s crucial for you to have access to your room early, perhaps you arrive on a very early flight or have an important business call, then it’s the only way to make sure it’s available.
Just let the property know that you’ll be arriving early in the morning, not the evening, so that you’re not marked as a no-show and your room is given away.
How to check into a hotel
For an easy hotel check-in, simply go to the front desk (reception) and have your ID and credit card ready. Confirm the room type and any special requests you made (bed types, accessibility needs, adjoining rooms, non-smoking, etc.)
Typically, the front desk staff will provide you with keys and directions to your room and an overview of the amenities and policies. Now is a good time to ask any questions.
If you’re driving, you can usually park directly in front of the hotel to check in and unload your bags before moving your car to a parking spot. If a bellman helps you with your bags, don’t forget to tip.
Once inside your room, check that it’s the type you requested and it’s to your liking. If you need to request a different room for some reason, do it right away.
Having traveled extensively and stayed in numerous hotels, I’ve come up with my own tips to make things a little easier once you are in the hotel:
Tips to speed up the check-in process
- If you require an early check-in, make sure you’ve contacted the hotel in advance to confirm that this is possible.
- Notify the hotel in a timely manner if you have specific requests, such as your preferred floor or room type. I strongly recommend confirming these preferences with reception during the check-in process. Addressing any necessary changes at this point will be far more convenient than after you’ve entered the room.
- If you’re traveling with a pet, familiarize yourself with the hotel’s pet policy to avoid any unwelcome surprises. You can notify the hotel via email before arriving or ask before making your reservation. Be sure to keep copies of the email correspondence with the hotel.
What do I need to check into a hotel?
Checking into a hotel is fairly straightforward, but you do need to come prepared with a few documents:
- An identification card: A driver’s license or passport will suffice. If you’re traveling abroad, the front desk may copy the front page of your passport to keep on file. Your name on your ID should match your reservation. (And keep in mind that most hotels have an age minimum for booking a room.)
- A credit card: A hotel will need a credit card in your name to make a deposit for incidentals, which will be refunded to you if there is no damage. This will also allow you to charge food, drink, and other services to your room.
- Reservation confirmation: It’s usually sufficient to give a hotel your last name so they can look your reservation up. But it’s not a bad idea to have your reservation confirmation on hand just in case.
How to get free hotel room upgrades
When checking into your hotel, you can ask about getting a room upgrade. Just like an early check-in request, this isn’t guaranteed and depends on availability. However, several approaches can increase your odds, including mentioning that you’re celebrating a special occasion and being polite to the front desk. One of the best ways to get a free room upgrade is to note any hotel or credit card status that offers room upgrades as a perk.
While not always successful, it never hurts to try these tips to attempt to get an early check-in to make the most of your trip. If you found this helpful, you might also appreciate the expert guides on finding cheap luxury hotel and how to interpret hotel reviews.
FAQs
Most hotels allow someone else to check-in for you as long as you have that person added to the hotel reservation. To ensure a smooth process, contact the hotel in advance to ask about their policies.
Hotels often have a time listed that you need to check in before. But you can almost always check into a hotel later, even after midnight, as long as you notify them in advance. However, at smaller or independent properties, a very late check-in is sometimes not possible. If you anticipate one, be sure to contact them as far in advance as possible.
Hotel policies vary widely regarding the number of guests allowed in a room. Some are fairly lax (unless the number of people starts to become excessive), while others, especially those in Europe, have strict rules and will charge extra per guest. It’s highly recommended to check before booking to avoid surprise fees later.
Some hotels don’t have check-in deadlines, but for those that do, the cut-off is commonly between 6:00 pm and midnight. If you’re a no-show by that point, a hotel may give away your room. If you plan to arrive in the evening, it’s best to call ahead to inform the hotel.
