Our data shows football fans are flocking to Georgia this Labor Day weekend for the start of the college football season. But if football’s not your thing, don’t worry. We took the “labor” out of Labor Day weekend travel planning and identified top destinations for you to consider.
Football Fervor in Georgia
Athens, GA saw an astounding 3,000% increase in hotel searches compared to flanking weekends, undoubtedly due to the University of Georgia opening their football season against rival Clemson at home. Atlanta saw a relatively “moderate” 334% increase with Alabama and West Virginia scheduled to play at this year’s Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game. With four different schools playing, fans visiting Georgia should expect to pay more for a hotel room over the holiday weekend. Compared to flanking weekends, hotel rates in Atlanta increased 43% to an average $213 and Athens increased 36% to an average $217.
Top Destinations for Everyone Else
If you’re seeking a little “time out” this Labor Day Weekend, consider Vancouver, Canada ($215 average hotel rate); Boston, MA ($299 average hotel rate); or Paris, France ($252 average hotel rate). Compared to surrounding weekends, searches to each destination decreased by 44%, 32%, and 30%, respectively, which means you won’t be fighting with another hotel guest over the last muffin at breakfast (we’ve all been there).
More concerned with saving a few bucks? Here are the three destinations with the lowest hotel rates over Labor Day Weekend, relative to flanking weekends:
- Toronto, Canada; average hotel rate down 17% to $175
- Washington, DC; average hotel rate down 16% to $142
- San Francisco, CA; average hotel rate down 14% to $228
