With major storms affecting southern parts of the United States, we want to be sure you have the latest travel information to stay safe.

Hurricane Ian is the most recent storm aimed at Florida and much of the Southeast. You can track its path here. We’ve pulled together resources on flights, lodging and road conditions to keep you in the know on all things travel-related.

Flights

If you’ve had a flight to or from the affected areas canceled or delayed by the storm, here are our tips on what you can do. The unique thing about hurricanes and other storms, however, is that some airlines consider these “acts of God,” which means your flights may not be eligible for compensation.

Currently, for Hurricane Ian, Tampa and Orlando airports have closed completely with some airlines waiving change fees. Other airports are rolling out closing announcements as well – you can head to Florida’s State Preparedness page for the latest updates on closures for airports, tolls, universities, highway systems and more.

Over 3,500 flights have been canceled so far, with some of the major airlines offering travel waivers but also enforcing rebooking deadlines – see the latest here. As flights around the country may also be impacted in the wake of these storms, our Flight Tracker helps you track your flight’s status.

Lodging

If you are in an impacted area and need to find a place to stay, hotels will usually offer reduced rates for special weather events, sometimes referred to as “distressed rates.” These special rates should be reflected on KAYAK as many of our partners will update their listings, but if you’re not finding what you need it may be a good idea to call around and specifically inquire about any storm relief or special circumstance accommodations they’re offering.

Also, if you have a pet to bring along, you can filter for pet-friendly hotels on KAYAK to find a list of places that will allow you to bring your furry friend. At times of disaster, many hotels that do allow pets but usually charge a pet fee will waive that fee as well.

For those on the road

GasBuddy has gas-availability tracking systems in place to notify drivers of gas stations with no fuel/power (and also has diesel availability in their fuel tracker).

Amtrak has also canceled service south of Jacksonville, FL through September 29th.
