FAQs - booking The Big Island flights

  • What’s the best airport in San Francisco to fly to the Island of Hawai’i?

If you want an airport that’s not busy but also not too far from San Francisco, then Oakland International Airport (OAK) is a good option that offers regular nonstop flights to the Island of Hawai’i via Alaska Airlines. On the other hand, if you value a shorter commute to the airport, the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is closer to the city (13 mi), and you can choose to fly to the Island of Hawai’i on United Airlines in addition to Alaska Airlines.

  • Are there nonstop flights to the Island of Hawai’i from the East Coast?

All flights to the Island of Hawai’i from any city on the East Coast require at least one layover, usually at Honolulu International Airport (HNL). Both airports on the Island of Hawai’i receive nonstop flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). If you don’t mind having only one airline to choose from, you can book a flight to the Island of Hawai’i on United Airlines and land at Hilo International Airport. However, if you prefer to have more airlines to choose from, be aware that Kona International Airport receives regular flights from LAX.

  • Which airport is best to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park?

The airport closest to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Hilo International Airport (45 min). If distance is the only factor, then this is the best airport to travel to. If, however, you want the possibility to choose another airline to fly to the Island of Hawai’i, then pick Kona International Airport instead. But keep in mind that this airport is a 2h 15m drive from the Volcanoes National Park.

  • How long is the flight to The Big Island?

An average nonstop flight from the United States to The Big Island takes 9h 52m, covering a distance of 3504 miles. The most popular route is Los Angeles - Kailua-Kona with an average flight time of 5h 30m.

Based on KAYAK flight searches, the most popular destination is Kailua-Kona (89% of total searches to The Big Island). The next most popular destinations are Hilo (9%) and Waimea (Kamuela) (2%).

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

Top tips for finding cheap flights to The Big Island

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest The Big Island flight deals.
  • If you’re looking for flights to Hawai’i from the continental United States, then Kona International Airport (KOA) is the airport with the most options of airlines and routes. It’s also the closest to all the beach resorts and about 13 min from the nearest beach.
  • If you’re flying to the Big Island for other attractions or for business, booking a flight to Hawai’i that lands at Hilo International Airport (ITO) might be more convenient. Keep in mind that this airport is not served by as many airlines and routes.
  • If you’re island-hopping, you can use either of the two major airports or opt to fly to Waimea-Kohala Airport (MUE). However, just remember that this airport is only served by regular flights to and from Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui Island.
  • If you’re traveling from the West Coast of the United States and want the shortest flight possible, then book a nonstop flight to Kona Airport.
  • Passengers traveling with small children from the West Coast and looking for the most child-friendly airport, consider booking a nonstop flight to Hawai’i that departs from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or San Jose International Airport (SJC).

Flights were on time. Check in was fine. Crew members were pleasant.

The boarding gate is literally just an aisle to the concourse. There is no seating and it's shared with several other airlines. It's crowded, hot, and standing-room only. It's difficult to hear gate announcements over the PA system with too many other carriers crammed into a small space. I've enjoyed flying AA in the past on the west coast, but the BNA single gate experience is horrendous! Never again from BNA to SEA with AA.

I would have liked it to have been easier to order food for the flight. My son was not happy with the snack pack I bought him and it was a very long flight for a little boy to go without food.

It was a partial full flight. But even with a spare seat it was hard to get comfortable More on me being a wide body probably

I had a middle seat in between two large men. It was a redeye so needless to say I didn’t get a minute of sleep. One guy was pouring over into my seat the other kept falling onto my shoulder

Our flights using Alaska Airlines went great! All of the flight attendants were very friendly. Big shout out to the pilots for getting us to and from our destinations safely!

I can’t complain. Perhaps passing out headphones, but it was on me to bring my own since I could have used some for my personal device.

Easy and quick boarding. A bit of a hard landing at PDX

Great price on internet. I love that WiFi was so affordable. Got a lot done.

Very close to on-time takeoff and landing. Attendants were all great - Julia was best! Joined the Alaska Air Rewards and will fly with them again!

Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!

Had to change aircraft due to a faulty door. Surprisingly it only caused about an hour and a half of delay. Delta handled this situation as well as can be expected.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

Paid premium for Delta only to be on safe but tired old 767 with ancient cabin in mediocre condition. Poor wifi and horrible inflight entertainment. Hardly a premium experience. Should have flown SW and had fun flight crew and no pretense

Our flight to Zurich was delayed by almost 3 hours, so we missed our next flight. There was no indication it would be delayed this much. We were told the gate had changed and then it apparently took over 2 hours to load the "catering" on the plane. We were not compensated in any way for the trouble.

Rated entertainment as Mediocre as there were major problems with the Infotainment system that took probably a half hour for them to fix.

Your crew could maybe answer the call bell at least one of the times I pressed it. I pressed it first time with 2.5 hours left in our flight bc my partner was hungry and wanted a sandwich. We finally got the sandwich with 40 mins left in the flight.

Delta crushed it. Flight attendant in first was attentive and just never stopped. Honestly one of the best domestic flights I’ve been on.

They were an hour late and they didn’t have my wheelchair for me

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

No food or entertainment because it was a short flight. Unfortunately the takeoff was delayed more than an hour

Parents with kids should all be in the same area. Sounds rude but who what's to fly 6hrs with crying and bratty kids. Just my opinion.

Ok, so I didn’t have seats, so got there very early. I was first in line only to be told, listen for your name for seats. The flight was boarding before they gave me a middle seat, way after others showed up who were given more favorable treatment. Ok, so , don’t show up early and obey all the rules??? Clearly, your gate clerks did not. What gives???

Short flight but delayed. Since its a short flight no food or entertainment necessary

We had an awesome flight attendant who came by and made sure we were okay. Checked on us often and even shared some snacks that she had brought on, like edamame with chili and garlic seasoning. Yummy!

Overall good experience. I'm just over 6ft with long legs and legroom could be better, but is on par with other airlines. Only real negative was turbulence but that's not the airlines fault.

First flight got cancelled. Got booked for another flight departing 3.5 hours later which ended up being 1hr delayed... The flight was good when we finally ended up flying.

Very friendly und helpful crew. Looking forward for some more flights in

My husband and I had to split seats and I did not like to seat at the window.

Pilot and first officer did really an amazing job. I can best discribe their flying as finesse. Inital service with food/beverages was great, however after that the crew just kind of packed it in and were sitting in the galleys chatting for the remainder of the flight. I wanted a bottle of water, went to the mid plane galley, was told they were only available in the back, so had to walk the length of the plane just to get a bottle of water. That was a new experience on an airplane for me. Pretty sure evem Spirit will bring you the bottle of water you are paying for. Seat was comfy, magazine worth the read. Entertainment nonexistant unless you want to pop for the $4 headphones.

The flight and boarding were easy peasy. I was traveling with my 4-year-old, so a smooth boarding experience was especially appreciated. My only piece of feedback is really about where our gate was in O'Hare. They've shoved four gates into a tiny corner of the B terminal and there isn't early enough room or seating for everyone. Not United's problem, but did dent the overall experience.

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

There was no screens on board AND the WiFi didn’t work. My seat was broken and couldn’t recline so I couldn’t even sleep. The flight attendants didn’t offer anything to make it more comfortable. It was such an old cramped plane, when the person in front of me reclined I couldn’t even open my tray table. All the United ads talk about guaranteeing everyone gets a screen!

The Wi-Fi was unavailable on this flight for some reason.

On time take off…US cabins look tired and need of refresh!

Fantastic. Smooth boarding with an infant. Never experienced it with any other carriers.

This was a Lufthansa flight, not United. The CSA at the counter, Ashley, was not only incompetent, but quite rude. Me and two other PAX waited over 7 minutes standing in front of her and another CSA and they ignored us. We joked that we must have accidently taken invisibility pills. She could have at least said "I'll be with you in a moment, I'm currently....". I could go on about how rude she and the other CSAs were (whispering, not communicating with me, blaming the situation on others, etc.). She would not work for me. Then, she gave me literally the worst seat on the plane. the worst. My seat kept getting bumped (rammed twice by the crew with their carts and about every 5 minutes by someone using the bathroom), listening to the bathroom all night, crowded seat, etc.

My seat was broken. WiFi didn’t work. Gate crew at HOU were rude and condescending. Treated all the passengers badly. Bad experience, United.

First flight of the day… MINIMUM FUEL! 15 minute landing delay at HOU due to fog turned into a 2+ hour delay! Rather than circle, they had to divert to another city to refuel! Sat on tarmac at Austin to refuel. We ALL missed our connections! The crew, including pilots, were clueless. Crew was really a mess. At HOU, Untied employees were exceedingly rude to all. It was pitiful.

An hour and a half late is UNACCEPTABLE. The negative impact to our family is unconscionable. And for the price we were forced to pay...

The boarding process and flight were great. However, I waited about 40 minutes for my luggage. It did not come up on the designated belt. Instead, everyone’s bags were on a cart. Not sure what the issue was, but we were not informed until another passenger went looking for her bags and found them.

There were delays on both ends. It made it less than excellent. This plane was great though

AA1537 the AC was not working properly. It was very hot and uncomfortable.

Worst experience flying American Airlines. I fly with them often, so I was super disappointed in the service I received at gate 30 in LGA on May 24, mid-day. The flight was delayed twice. I was patiently waiting in the American Airlines lounge when I received the notice on my app that the plane was boarding 45 minutes before its newly re-scheduled take off of 4 pm (from the orginal 1:45 pm then 3:00 pm). It took me 5 min to travel from the lounge to the gate and when I arrived there at 3:20 flight gate attendant told me the flight had closed and that they announced for passengers multiple times. I showed them the notification on my app and they were really rude and unempathetic. The person who rescheduled my flight at customer service wasn't any happier but was at least helpful in getting me on the next flight.

Flight was 1/2 hour delayed leaving Phoenix. Otherwise it was an average flight. Flight crew on this trip was very nice.

Everything was great except for the wifi was junk. Crew was super friendly and helpful

Was lucky to have a employee at the AA checkin counter that had compassion and understood they ordeal that we went through with our original flight being diverted, needing to stay in the aircraft and then flying to the original destination; adding hours to the trip and forcing us to miss our connection and our rebooked connection. She was able to get up on standby on the highest priority on the next flight to the closest airport we need to be at and it all worked out despite being many hours late.

Delayed so that missed connecting flight. Connecting flight was also delayed on the tarmac but they closed the gate before the rescheduled time.

Attendants were rude. Scowling. Seats were miserable and we paid extra.

Took off over an hour late with multiple mechanical issues. Gate agent in Dallas was lazy and was slow as molasses. Had a line 10 people long. Spirit bad..
