Situated in the historic town of Topsham near Exeter, you are assured a warm welcome at Broadway House - a family run bed and breakfast with high standards of care in an historic house. At one time, Topsham was one of the most important ports in England - second only to London. Used for the import of cotton from America and elsewhere, the Dutch architecture and port buildings of that period can still be seen on the waterfront today. Most of the buildings though have since been converted to residential use and the port of Topsham is now used for leisure instead of commerce. The house which dates back to 1776 has a grade II* historical listing and was built in a grand style by a wealthy oporto merchant who after building it couldn't afford to live in it because of its cost! Many of the original features of the house are still visible: There is a fine mahogony staircase with a large pallodion window (Used for many a wedding photo!) and in the hall are 16/17C Spanish leather panels (said to be from the Armada) which were installed from another property when the house was built. The lower two floors have plaster cornices and the original shutters a feature of all the rooms still work. Our Georgian Tearoom & Restaurant has been established within the property for 20 years and has a widespread reputation for quality and hospitality - so much so that we recently received the award for 'Best Tearoom in Devon'. Our bed and breakfast is also a favourite with many of our guests who have returned time and time again.
