Said was very friendly. Free breakfast.
Internet didn't work, but Said was very attentive and seemed willing to address this. Since I only stayed a short time I didn't bother. The star level is pretty accurate but the friendly staff counts for a lot.
The Bleu Balcon was located in a neighborhood perfect for both couples and families. The Metro Station was only one block away. Shops, bars, restaurants and anything else you could think of were all nearby. The host, Said, was STUPENDOUS and accommodating
Nothing comes to mind.Any guide book will tell you Rue St. Denis is where all the action happens in Montreal, and the Bleu Balcon is right in the middle of it. What was so great about the hotel was that it served as an oasis of relaxation if you needed it, but as soon as you were ready to re-enter the exhilarating street scene that is Rue St. Denis, it was right outside of your door. Additionally, the Metro Station is only one block away, so all of Montreal is within arms reach. The graciousness, kindness and accommodating nature of the host and owner of Bleu Balcon, Said, can also not be understated. Said was always kind, conversational and jolly. This was my first time in Montreal, and I can n...

The greatest draw about this hotel is that it's situated near some very interesting locations, like the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, The Canadian Center for Architecture, and the entire Rue de Sainte Catherine, which is fun to simply walk along. There is a local metro station next to the Pepsi Forum that will get you where ever you have to go outside of walking distance. The hotel staff were pleasant enough. They did fail to clean my room one day that I stayed there, however. The hotel was small, room itself smelled of smoke (despite it being clearly labeled as a non-smoking room, and had an angled floor. There weren't enough plugs available for my laptop without stringing the line across the room. The bathroom was neat, but the tub drained slowly. The bed, though clean, had a blanket that had been patched up. A 4-person family ended up staying in the next room, and though they were easily heard through the walls/door, they were mercifully quiet at night. Overall, a great stay for ...
This place was what it was. Everything worked and appeared clean until I began to look under things... If you're on a tight budget, but prefer not to stay in a hostel, this is your place

The location was convenient and the staff was professional.
The place is terribly dated and worn. The bathrooms are tiny and a mishmash of finishes. Sink was cheap! Wallpaper was peeling. Lobby is bland, worn and devoid of personality. It is a large, convention hotel that is coasting on the Fairmount reputation.
The shower was amazing, location was perfect.
Rooms were small, no cot option, room wasn't ready until nearly 5pm.

charming character, great location, right next to the subway station and the night life. Breakfast in the morning was great, and the host was friendly and helpful. Overall a terrific stay.
No soaps were provided in the bathroom. Rooms were on the smaller side, big enough for me, but some people may be looking for more for ---$ a nightParking lot literally across the street from this place. For 20$ a day, you don't have to worry about reading parking signs in French and paying the ridiculous fees for on street parking. Went out with the car for lunch in Montreal, street parking was like 4 dollars an hour at the meter, not even in a lot.

Amazing location. Parking nearby is very affordable.
You could not control the temperature in the room. They turned the AC off at night and it was very hot.Nothing can beat this location. The hotel rooms were really awesome and gave such a European vibe.
the front desk clerk was very pleasant and helpful.he told us about a cheaper place for parking(in a lot underground from the library)and drew directions on maps for us to get to sights we wanted to see.breakfast room wasn't open but he gave us croissants
neighborhood is kind of seedy. Several times there were people sitting on the steps of hotel begging or sitting near the hotel begging.there was no breakfast area as promised-it was under renovation, was noisy at night-right next to a parking lot.there was no elevator-stairs only.we were on 2nd floor originally but thought location would be noisy,so we switched to the first floor.it was noisy Saturday night. The room we switched to was tiny-really too small for 2 people. There is no air conditioning-something to think of in summer.

This was a great value. It was safe, clean, affordable. That was all we were looking for. Being from the states, I was nervous I might be getting what I paid for, meaning something trashy. That was not the case. I'm glad I spent less on the hotel and had more money to enjoy time on the town. I would recommend.
Had we stayed longer, we would have made use of the kitchenette. It's stocked with all you would need to make a simple meal if you're trying to save a bit of money on an extended stay.
Fairly rude and standoffish concierge, and for 24 hours the wifi is $5 which is honestly a bit absurd.

The room was really nice and stylish. Very tranquil atmosphere during the day and sometimes during the night.
Right next door (or seemingly so) to a place with a live band one night. That went on until at least after 1am. I was on a floor with a shared bathroom, which I brought upon myself, but it's literally one solo bathroom for everyone. It's easy to miss. The staff is more than helpful, even if you don't speak French. I think it deserves more than 2 stars.
This place was exactly what I was looking for - an affordable, comfortable and clean place to stay in the middle of a lively and colorful neighborhood of Montreal, from which it was easy to travel via public transportation anywhere else.
Nothing unexpected at all. I knew it would be a little on the small side, but the space was clean and perfect for what we needed and the staff was courteous. This place is, in 4-5 times of traveling over the past 10 years to Montreal, one of the best deals to be had in the city. I have yet to stay in other 'auberge'-type setups in Montreal to make comparable reviews, but due to this experience I will never again stay in a traditional expensive 'hotel' for future visits (unless someone else is footing the bill). For the price, this place offers one of the best values available. The staff from beginning to end - from the various shift-workers I met in the different times we popped in and out of the hotel - courteo...

The Hotel Le St. James is one of the best hotels in the world in terms of rooms, service, food and the exceptional quality of attention that is lavished upon guests. The rooms are adorned in wonderful period pieces, ranging from contemporary in the superior rooms to 19th century masterpieces in the heritage suites. The room service, afternoon tea and dining at XO are of the highest standard. I have stayed many times and the nice part about the staff is that they remember every single detail from my previous stay. The price isnt cheap, but if compared to other hotels in Montreal the choice is easy. If you want super contemporary stay at the W. If you want the classic hotel experience comparable to some of the best hotels in Europe, stay at the St. James, you wont regret it.
Just returned from trip with my husband and friends to the Canadian Grand Prix. 3rd year at the St. James, and just as wonderful this time around. The hotel is beautiful, sophisticated, private, and the staff completely caters to your every need. We had room service every morning with fabulous eggs benedict and cocktails in the library every evening with a wonderful server who remembered our names and drinks. Our suite was fabulous with a soaking tub and the most sumptuous linens available. The whole place actually smells fantastic...I don't know how they do it. It truly is my most favorite hotel ever, and Montreal is one of my favorite cities. So much fun, and the St. James is the icing on the cake. Stay here if at all possible!
