The Town is the base for all Cycling, Climbing and Mountaineering activities in the area and also home to St Martin's College, soon to be the University of Cumbria. Also close by is the Village of Bowness-on-Windermere, a town that has grown alongside Windermere since the building of the Station. The Windermere Steamboats Museum is located in Bowness and houses an exhibition by Arthur Ransome, Authur of several books including Swallows and Amazons in which he based the Town of 'Rio' on Bowness-on-Windermere.
