preloadCarry-on luggage open on a bed and ready for packing

Allegiant is an ultra-low-cost carrier in the United States, and it only allows passengers one free personal item. Carry-on bags cost an additional fee. Here’s what you need to know about Allegiant’s baggage policy, including carry-on size.

Allegiant carry-on size, weight and what’s included for free

Allegiant’s carry-on size — and Allegiant’s personal item size — are listed below. Please note that carry-on bags are not free! If you bring a carry-on bag without paying during booking or check-in, you’ll likely have to pay an extra fee for the bag.

Allegiant carry-on intel, tips and tricks

  • Carry-on bags are not free! It’s cheapest to pay for a carry-on bag at the time of booking. It’s more expensive to add it to an existing reservation. And it’s even more expensive to pay for it at the airport.
  • Allegiant’s carry-on bag size includes handles, wheels and decorations, not just the main body of the suitcase.
  • Personal items must fit under the seat in front of you. You cannot put personal items in the overhead bin.
  • Fortunately, there’s no weight limit for either a carry-on bag or a personal item on Allegiant.

Expert tip: Pack all of your entertainment and snacks in your personal item and keep it under the seat in front of you. Allegiant doesn’t have in-flight entertainment systems, Wi-Fi or free snacks!

What doesn’t count as a carry-on?

Medical and assistive devices like canes, crutches and CPAP machines do not count toward your one-item carry-on limit, nor do they count toward your one-item personal-item limit. Any devices that are too large to fit in the overhead bin, such as a wheelchair or scooter, will be checked into the cargo hold free of charge.

What extra items can you bring on board?

In addition to your personal item and any medical and assistive devices, you can bring the following onboard free of charge:

  • One coat or jacket
  • One small umbrella
  • Food to eat onboard
  • A diaper bag
  • One item of reading material
  • One bag or box from duty free

You can also check one stroller and one car seat per infant for free. If you check them at the check-in counter, you must retrieve them at baggage claim. If you bring them through security with you to your gate, you can gate-check them — that means you’ll pick them up on the jet bridge after your flight.

Common Allegiant carry-on FAQs

Still have questions about Allegiant’s baggage policy? Discover the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions below.

It depends on the Allegiant agents you encounter. In some cases, you might have to place your carry-on bag in a sizer either at the check-in desk or at the gate before boarding. If it doesn’t fit, you may be charged an additional fee to check the bag. In other cases, Allegiant agents might not measure your bag at all.

As with carry-on bags, Allegiant may be strict with your personal item, but it all depends on the agents. There are bag sizers for personal items, and some agents might insist you use them either at check-in or at the gate before boarding. If your personal item is too big, you may have to pay extra to consider it a carry-on bag. And if you already have a carry-on bag, you might have to check one of them for an additional fee.

Airlines don’t dictate carry-on liquid sizes, but federal aviation security agencies do! In the United States, that’s the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Liquids that go in your carry-on must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, and they must fit in a quart-sized clear bag. If you have larger liquids, they must be placed in a checked bag, not your carry-on..

Top three carry-on luggage tips for Allegiant

Tip #1: When budgeting for flights, pay close attention to baggage fees

Since Allegiant is an ultra-low-cost carrier, just about everything costs extra, including carry-on bags. When you’re budgeting for your flight, keep baggage fees in mind, as the total price might go up significantly, and it may be cheaper to fly another airline that includes free carry-ons.

Tip #2: Purchase a bundle to save money on add-ons like carry-ons

If you plan on buying add-ons like a carry-on bag, a checked bag and priority boarding, you might be able to save some money by booking a bundle. But beware! Bundles are not customizable, so you’ll have to buy the whole package. They also must be purchased at the time of booking, and they’re not refundable.

Tip #3: Don’t try to cheat the system

You may be tempted to sneak a carry-on bag onto the plane without paying, but that’s not a good idea. On Allegiant, paid carry-ons are usually marked with a sticker, so gate agents and flight attendants can easily see which bags belong in the overhead bins. Plus, paid baggage will be noted on your boarding pass.

If you’re caught trying to bring a carry-on bag onboard without paying, you’ll pay a higher fee for the carry-on bag at the gate than you would at check-in! And you might even need to check the bag if there’s no more room for carry-ons.
